NOTRE DAME THE BUILDING

The great cathedral took many years to build. The

building of Notre Dame continued from 1163 to

1334.

It took them over 180 years to build.

THE CATHEDRAL

Notre Dame means- for our lady of Paris.

No other building is so associated with the history of Paris

as Notre-Dame.

Standing on the Ile de la Cite on the eastern side.

The cathedral is a gothic masterpiece standing on the site

of a Roman temple.

Galerie des Chimeres- the cathedral’s legendary

gargoyles.

West rose window and south Rose window- these windows

depicts the virgin in a medallion of rich reds and blues.

Flying buttresses- arches leading away from the building

to hold it up. Wanted their cathedrals to be full of light, so

they would be inspiring, not dark and depressing.
