Lodovico Viadana (eigentlich L. Grossi) wurde um 1560 inViadana geboren. Über seine musikalische Ausbildung istnichts bekannt. Um 1595 war er „maestro di cappella“ ander Kathedrale zu Mantua, um 1600 finden wir ihn in Rom,1602 in Cremona und 1610 in Fano. 1614–1615 besuchte erFerrara, Piacenza und Mantua. Viadana starb 1627 imKloster S. Andrea in Gualtieri in der Nähe seines Geburts-ortes Viadana.

Die meisten Werke aus dem reichen Schaffen unseresMeisters sind schon zu seinen Lebzeiten wiederholt aufge-legt worden, ein Beweis für die Beliebtheit seiner Kom-positionen. Die SINFONIE MUSICALI stellen – soweitbekannt – die einzigen gedruckt überlieferten Instrumen-talwerke Viadanas dar. Ihr vollständiger Titel lautet:

Lodovico Viadana (really L. Grossi) was born at Viadana in1560. Of his musical training nothing is known. He was“maestro di capella” at Mantua cathedral around 1595, wasin Rome in 1600, in Cremona in 1602 and at Fano in 1610.In the years 1614 – 1615 he visited Ferrara, Piacenza andMantua. He died in 1627 in the convent of S. Andrea atGualtieri near to Viadana, the place of his birth.

Most of the many works written by Viadana were printedrepeatedly during his lifetime – an indication of their popu-larity. The SINFONIE MUSICALI are, as far as is known,the only printed instrumental works of Viadana to havesurvived. Their full title is:

SINFONIE MUSICALI A OTTO VOCI DI LODOVICO VIADANA Comode per concer-tare con ogni sorte di stromenti Con il suo Basso generale per l’Organo, nouamente conposte,§ date in luce. OPERA XVIII. In Venetia, Appresso Giacomo Vincenti, 1610.

Trotz des geringen Tonumfangs der Stücke sorgen derWechsel von Polyphonie und Homophonie ebenso wie derWechsel vom Zweier- zum Dreiertakt für eine lebendigeund anmutige Schreibweise. Oft finden sich Anklänge anbekannte Weisen in den „Sinfonien“, die jeweils den Nameneiner für sie typischen italienischen Stadt tragen.

Der „Basso generale per l’Organo“ enthält die tiefste Stimmeder beiden Chöre, es handelt sich also um einen „Bassoseguente“, in dem gelegentlich die kleine oder große Terzdurch ein entsprechendes Versetzungszeichen gekenn-zeichnet ist. In der Vorlage steht dieses Zeichen im Systemvor der Bassnote. Viadana, der nicht ganz zu Recht gern alsErfinder des Generalbasses angesehen wird, verfährt hiernicht anders als die meisten seiner Zeitgenossen: Statt wieherkömmlich üblich das ganze Werk mühsam aus den ein-zelnen Stimmen für die Orgel zu intavolieren, genügtihnen die Aufzeichnung einer einfachen Baßstimme, die alsBindeglied zwischen den Chören nach Möglichkeit mitge-spielt werden sollte, obschon eine Wiedergabe der Stückeauch ohne diese Stimme möglich ist.

Though the range of these pieces is small, the changes fromhomophony to polyphony, and from duple to triple meas-ure, give the compositions life and grace. Often the piecescontain reminders of well known tunes from the “Sin-fonie”, each of which bears the name of an Italian city ofwhich it is typical.

The “Basso generale per l’Organo” contains the lowestparts of the both choirs and is thus a “Basso seguente” inwhich the major or minor third is occasionally indicated byan appropriate accidental. In the source used for this pub-lication the accidentals are found on the staff before thebass notes. Viadana, who is often regarded – not quite cor-rectly – as the inventor of the thoroughbass, did exactly thesame as his contemporaries in this respect. Instead of tran-scribing the whole work painstakingly into organ tablaturefrom the individual parts, which was the established prac-tice, he was content merely to write down a bass part. Thisshould if possible be played as a connecting link betweenthe choirs, though the pieces can also be played without it.
