Homemade Doughnuts Bring Luck for the New Year

Sharing Hometown Recipes, Cooking Tips and Coupons

On New Year’s Day, start the year with a bit of luck by snacking on Peggi Anne Tebben’s

sweet and delicious Mom’s Raised Doughnuts. Folklore says round shape cakes are to be eaten to celebrate the year coming full circle and bring luck. You can make these extra special by doubling the glaze for added ooey, gooey sweetness.

See step-by-step photos of Peggi Anne’s recipe plus thousands more from home cooks nationwide at:

What You Need1/2 c water, warm (not hot)2 pkg active dry yeast3/4 c milk, lukewarm1/4 c plus 1 tsp sugar1 tsp salt4 c all-purpose flour, sifted1/3 c shortening2 eggsGLAZE1 tbsp water, warm (may need more to thin, but thicker is better)1/2 tsp vanilla1 c confectioners sugar, sifted

Directions• Soak yeast in 1/2 c warm (not

hot) water (5 min). Add 1 tsp sugar to activate yeast.

• Scald milk and melt shortening.• Pour milk over sugar and salt

in a bowl. Stir until dissolved.

Mom’s Raised Doughnuts

Make sure mixture is warm, not hot.• Add 1 c of flour, eggs and yeast mixture.

Beat until smooth. • Add remaining flour to make soft dough. When dough leaves sides of bowl, turn out onto lightly floured board.

• Knead until dough becomes smooth and elastic. Place in lightly greased bowl. Grease top of dough and cover with waxed paper. Allow to rise in warm place until doubled (1-1/2 hrs).

• Roll out dough to 1/2 in thickness and cut with round cutters.

• Let rise on the board until very light (40-60 min).• Drop into deep hot fat (325° - 350°) and

turn when doughnuts are just barely brown. Turn once again when browned sufficiently.

• Drain on absorbent paper.• While still warm, drizzle with glaze. • Can also dust with granulated or confectioners sugar.

“These melt in your

mouth!”

Governments are required to publish their decisions in the newspaper – including their intent to build a structure nearby that you might not want. But some officials want to bury public notices on little seen, rarely visited government websites.

If it is not in the newspaper, how will you know?
