The non-profit organization was seeking a bull and heifer to start a cattle program. Facilities Manager Dave Barley tells us that Louisiana farmers donated the bull and heifer after reading about the program at Lighthouse Ranch. The school for boys with behavior problems cur- rently has an agricultural program that teaches them how to garden and grow their own fruits and veg- etables. Barley says the donors requested to remain anonymous. Barley adds that they are extremely grateful for the generosity of the people who contributed to their effort. He says he knows the young men will con- tinue to learn life skills and devel- op a strong work ethic with this new cattle program. Update: Lighthouse Ranch for Boys La. donates food to tornado victims The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry was instrumental in securing food and other donations for victims of the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma. “It is a humbling experience when you need help. What makes this country great is the generosity that comes from our citizens and local businesses,” said Strain. “Louisiana has been the recipient of much assistance in the past from other parts of the country because of catastrophic events such as hurricanes. This is a chance for us to give back to those who are in need,” added Strain. “Once again, our Louisiana citizens and compa- nies are proving to be extremely generous. This is def- initely a community effort.” Luis Ramos, Vice-President of Manufacturing at Blue Runner, said Blue Runner CEO Ricky Thomas read an article about the tornadoes’ destruction and the relief efforts. That’s when Thomas instructed his folks to get involved. “The support is amazing. I got involved when this was a pebble. Now it’s a snowball,” said Ramos. Contributions included: Farmers Rice Milling Company out of Lake Charles, La. is donating one ton of rice. Blue Runner Foods out of Gonzales is donating 1,200 cases of beans to feed up to 65,000 people. Silgan Containers donated the cans for the beans. Clarion Inn and Turner Industries each donated $1,000 toward the food products. Robert’s Distributors is donating $600 toward the purchase of fuel for the delivery of the food. Zapp’s Potato Chips also donated several pallets of potato chips. Gonzales and East Ascension Rotary Clubs donated four pallets of water, paper towels, Gatorade and liquid soap. Truck owner Lester Duplessis delivered the food and supplies to Moore, Ok. “When I was affected by Hurricane Katrina, people came out of the woodwork to help. I remember looking outside and seeing people with chainsaws cutting up trees on my property,” added Strain. Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux said, “You never know when something like this could happen in your community. This is an example of a bunch of people and companies that came together to do the right thing. The EF-5 tornado struck the Oklahoma City suburb on May 20, 2013. Louisiana Agriculture andForestry (LDAF) CommissionerMike Strain, D.V.M., is urgingLouisiana homeowners to hire onlylicensed landscape horticulturists, arborists and landscape irrigationcontractors when doing major land-scaping work at their homes or busi-nesses.

“Every spring and summer, ‘yardspecialists’ claiming to be landscap-ing professionals begin makingrounds in neighborhoods offeringbargain basement deals for yardwork,” Strain said. “Many have littleor no training and their work is oftensubstandard.

“All arborists, landscape horticul-

turists and landscape irrigation con-tractors must be licensed by theLouisiana Department ofAgriculture and Forestry,” Strainsaid.

Oversight of these professionals isthrough the LDAF’s Horticultureand Quarantine Programs division.

Strain advised that homeownersask to see a license issued by LDAFbefore allowing any work to be doneon their property. Homeownersshould also ask arborists, landscapehorticulturists and landscape irriga-tion contractors for references beforeengaging their services and shouldfollow up by checking those refer-ences.

Licensed arborists and landscapeirrigation contractors must also havecurrent liability insurance before alicense is issued, Strain said.

“Homeowners should ask forcopies of the arborist and landscapeirrigation contractor’s liability insur-ance,” Strain said. “They can thencall the contractor’s insurance com-pany to verify that the policy is cur-rent or they can contact our office.”

“These are basic steps homeown-ers should take to be sure that theyare hiring a licensed professional,”Strain said.

Strain said horticulture profession-als must pass an exam to ensure thatthey have the training necessary to

do the work. Arborists and landscapeirrigation contractors are required toattend continuing education trainingto renew their licenses.

In addition, licensed horticulturalprofessionals are required to displaytheir LDAF license number on theirvehicles.

“Call our Horticulture andQuarantine Programs division at225-952-8100 if you have any ques-tions about whether a landscape hor-ticulturist, landscape irrigation con-tractor or arborist is properlylicensed.”

A list of licensed horticulture pro-fessionals is also available atwww.LDAF.la.gov.

Entergy’s Louisiana utilities havelaunched a program to help Louisianafarmers save thousands of dollars annual-ly and become more energy efficient.Through Entergy’s Louisiana DieselConversion Program, farmers can nowpower their irrigation systems with elec-tricity and save money over using diesel-powered systems.

According to a Louisiana StateUniversity AgCenter study, electricpumps operate at approximately one-third of the cost of diesel pumps. Thatmeans a farmer who spent $50,000 lastyear on diesel to power his irrigation sys-tem could have saved more than $30,000with an electric powered irrigation sys-tem.

“In the last five years, the price of elec-tricity for an Entergy Gulf States orEntergy Louisiana commercial customerhas gone down 22 to 28 percent, whilethe price of diesel is up 35 percent, resulting in a situation where a farmercan now save a lot of money by goingwith electric as opposed to diesel,” saidJeff Holeman, manager of new businessdevelopment for Entergy Louisiana.

“Farmers interested in the program cancall us at 800-368-3749,” Holeman said.“We’ll work with you to determine whatkind of expense, if any, is involved ingetting electricity to that spot. And ifthere is a cost, it still may be economicalto convert because of the tremendous

savings.”The largest benefit of electric power is

that it is approximately one-third the costof diesel operation and low operatingcost (no oil changes, maintenance, fuelstorage etc.). But there are other benefitsof using electricity instead of diesel, including:

Electricity is more efficient. A typicaldiesel engine is between 15 percent and20 percent energy-efficient. In contrast, according to an LSU AgCenter study, anelectrical equivalent is approximately 85percent efficient.

It is stable and reliable. With a reliableenergy source and diverse electrical fuelmix, prices are more stable than diesel.

There are lower operating and mainte-nance costs with electric motors becausethey require substantially less mainte-nance than a diesel motor, such as no fil-ters and oil changes.

It is quiet and convenient compared toa diesel engine. Farmers can push a but-ton to start electric motors, start themremotely or even put them on a timer.

Electric is environmentally friendly. There are no fuel tanks needed for elec-tric motors and no potential for spills oremissions to worry about.

Jeff Davis, LSU AgCenter entomologist, is find-ing stink bugs in agricultural fields earlier this yearthan expected.

“We found them active in clover all winter. Weeven found them reproducing in the winter, and theyare not supposed to be,” he said.

More alarming, though, is his finding of redband-ed stink bug nymphs on June 3 on soybeans only 8inches tall, and adult redbanded stink bugs in 12-inch-high soybean plots. Both discoveries were atthe South Farm of the Rice Research Station inCrowley, where he rarely finds any stink bugs.

If left unchecked, the redbanded stink bug cancause damage so extensive that farmers may lose anentire field of beans, Davis said. The redbandedstink bug is the No. 1 pest of Louisiana soybeans.

“We are not supposed to be finding stink bugs inLouisiana this early in the vegetative stage. All theliterature says we won’t find them until pods havedeveloped,” Davis said.

He is working this year with a new samplingdevice that uses a leaf blower on a backpack to suckinsects from soybean plants. He said the vacuumfinds insects often missed with sweep nets, whichcan also damage small plants.

Davis has two studies funded by the LouisianaSoybean and Grain Research and Promotion Board. The first study will examine possible traits thatmake some varieties of soybeans undesirable to soy-bean pests, while integrating natural enemies of thepest and insecticides.

The second study is aimed at determining whenstink bugs move into a soybean field and how they

survive winters.Clover appears to be a bridge species that harbors

stink bugs until soybeans are growing. Farmers whouse clover as a cover crop should be aware thatkilling the clover could cause stink bugs to moveinto a soybean field, he said.

Two other insect pests are also problematic forLouisiana soybean growers, Davis said. The kudzubug was found near Vicksburg, Miss., and the brownmarmorated stinkbug has been found in Texas.

To detect possible movements of those two insectsinto Louisiana, small plots of 10 high-yielding soy-bean varieties were planted at several research sta-tions, and they are sampled weekly.

“We use them as our early warning system,” Davissaid.

Yield and quality will be examined after harvest,he said. Half of the research plots will be sprayed, and half will be left unsprayed for comparison.

The brown marmorated stink bug is not inLouisiana yet, he said, but discovery of the kudzubug just across the Mississippi River fromLouisiana means the pest could be found in soy-beans soon.

Alabama and Georgia soybean farmers have foundthe kudzu bug in their crops. Yield losses in untreat-ed fields could be as high as 40 percent, Davis said, but several insecticides are available that are effec-tive against the insect.

Davis also will be monitoring insect pests forinsecticide resistance. He said some populations ofstink bugs were showing resistance last year.
