The Italian Parish of Indianapolis
B envenuto! Welcome to Holy Rosary
Church! Whether you are a lifelong
parishioner, a first-time visitor to our
parish, or someone in between, we
are grateful you have joined us today.
Founded in 1909 as the Italian Parish of
Indianapolis, we continue to serve as
the parish home of people of Italian
heritage and also embrace all Catholics
in union with Rome, including those
devoted to the Traditional Latin Mass
(Extraordinary Form) and the Anglican
Usage of the Roman Rite.
In the words of our founding pastor,
Msgr. Marino Priori:
“The church is the temple of the
Lord, the gate of heaven. Come after a
week of earthly cares, after so much
toil, after so many sorrows, after so
much pain. Rest your limbs. Regenerate
your spirit at the sources of grace.
Raise your mind to God; thank Him for
the benefits received through His
creation and in daily life; ask for
strength so you can win all of life’s
struggles, and be able to possess the
fruits of redemption.”

Here is an excerpt from an address Pope Benedict XVI delivered May 1, 2006, after reciting the rosary with the faithful
at the Shrine of Our Lady of Divine Love in Rome. The history of the shrine dates to 1740 when a man, about to be at-
tacked by vicious dogs, saw a nearby image of the Blessed Virgin Mary and cried out for her protection; the dogs imme-
diately fled. A church was built there in 1745 to house the painting he had seen. The site immediately became, and still
remains, a popular pilgrimage destination. It is especially notable as the shrine where Pope Pius XII prayed for Rome’s
safety and liberation during World War II.
D ear brothers and sisters, in this Shrine we venerate
Mary Most Holy with the title “Our Lady of Di-
vine Love.”
Thus, full light is shed on the bond that united Mary
with the Holy Spirit from the very beginning of her ex-
istence when, as she was being conceived, the Spirit, the
eternal Love of the Father and of the Son, made their
dwelling within her and preserved her from any shadow
of sin; then again, when the same Spirit brought the Son
of God into being in her womb; and yet again when,
with the grace of the Spirit, Mary‟s own words were
fulfilled through the whole span of her life: “Behold, I
am the handmaid of the Lord”; and lastly, when, by the
power of the Holy Spirit, Mary was taken up physically
to be beside the Son in the glory of God the Father.
“Mary,” I wrote in the Encyclical Deus Caritas Est,
“is a woman who loves. … As a believer who in faith
thinks with God‟s thoughts and wills with God‟s will,
she cannot fail to be a woman who loves” (n. 41). Yes,
dear brothers and sisters, Mary is the fruit and sign of
the love God has for us, of His tenderness and mercy.
Therefore, together with our brothers in the faith of all
times and all places, we turn to her in our needs and
hopes, in the joyful and sorrowful events of life. …
In the month of May an increasing number of people
come here as pilgrims from the parishes of Rome and
also from many other districts,
to pray and to enjoy the
beauty and restful tranquility
of these places. From here,
from this Shrine of Divine
Love, we therefore expect
powerful help and spiritual
support for the Diocese of
Rome … for families, for vo-
cations, for the poor, the suf-
fering and the sick, for the children and for the elderly,
for the entire beloved Italian nation. We are expecting
in particular the inner energy to fulfill the vow made by
the Roman people on 4 June 1944, when they solemnly
asked Our Lady of Divine Love that this city be pre-
served from the horrors of war, and they were
heard: the vow and the promise, that is, to correct and
improve one‟s own moral conduct to bring it more into
line with that of the Lord Jesus. Today, too, there is a
need to convert to God, to God who is Love, so that the
world may be freed from war and terrorism. …
Dear brothers and sisters, from this Shrine of Our
Lady of Divine Love, I therefore renew the invitation I
expressed in the Encyclical Deus Caritas Est: “To prac-
tice love and in this way to cause the light of God to
enter into the world” (n. 39). Amen!
‘Mary is the fruit and sign of the love God has for us’

OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY OF POMPEII FEAST DAY: MAY 8
‘J ust as two friends, frequently
in each other‟s company, tend
to develop similar habits, so too, by
holding familiar converse with Jesus
and the Blessed Virgin, by meditat-
ing on the mysteries of the Rosary
and by living the same life in Holy
Communion, we can become, to the
extent of our lowliness, similar to
them and can learn from these supreme models a life of
humility, poverty, hiddenness, patience and perfection.”

May 12: World Day of Prayer for Vocations
‘Ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest’
T he Catholic Church worldwide will celebrate
the 56th annual World Day of Prayer for Voca-
tions next Sunday, May 12. It will be the Fourth Sun-
day of Easter in the Ordinary Form, a day commonly
referred to as Good Shepherd Sunday (the Extraordi-
nary Form marks Good
Shepherd Sunday today, the
Second Sunday after Easter).
Inspired by the Lord‟s in-
struction in the Gospels of
Matthew (9:38) and Luke
(10:2), in which Jesus exhorts
the people to “ask the master
of the harvest to send out
laborers for his harvest,”
World Day of Prayer for Vo-
cations unites the faithful
together in praying for the
fostering of all vocations, particularly those of or-
dained ministry and consecrated life.
In his Message for the 2019 World Day of Vocations, Pope Francis reflected on the reality that all men are
made “bearers of a promise” and are asked to have the “courage to take a risk” with Jesus and for Jesus. The
Holy Father emphasized that just as the Lord beckoned Simon and Andrew to leave their nets and follow Him,
He also asks the same of us. He encounters each of us personally and uniquely, and it is in the midst of this
encounter with Christ that Pope Francis says we are granted “the promise of a joy capable of bringing fulfill-
ment to our lives.”
The Holy Father also urged those discerning to remember that “the Lord‟s call is not an intrusion of God in
our freedom; it is not a „cage‟ or a burden to be borne. On the contrary, it is the loving initiative whereby God
encounters us and invites us to be part of a great undertaking.”
Former Archbishop of Indianapolis, Joseph Cardinal Tobin, chairman of the Committee on Clergy, Conse-
crated Life and Vocations, stated that it is precisely because of this encounter with Christ that we are given the
courage to leave the security of our daily routines and decisively embark on the path the Lord has for us.
“To have courage does not mean that we suddenly have no fear or uncertainty,” Cardinal Tobin said. To be
courageous means to know with confidence that Jesus is walking with us and in challenging us to take a risk,
intends only our greatest joy.”
Closing his Message for the 2019 World Day of Vocations, Pope Francis beseeched young people to realize
that following Jesus is always worth the risk.
“Do not be deaf to the Lord‟s call,” he urged. “If He calls you to follow this path, do not pull your oars into
the boat, but trust Him. Do not yield to fear, which paralyzes us before the great heights to which the Lord
points us. Always remember that to those who leave their nets and boats behind, and follow Him, the Lord
promises the joy of a new life that can fill our hearts and enliven our journey. — United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
SUPPORT VOCATIONS Special Second Collection at Holy Rosary
May 11-12, 2019 Sponsored by the Santo Rosario Council of the Knights of Columbus, all proceeds from this collection will go toward the vocational expenses of two young men from our parish:
Sam Rosko, a seminarian of Bishop Simon Bruté Seminary who is currently studying in Rome.
Austin Roy, who is preparing for a life of silence and solitude with the Carthusian monks at the Charterhouse of the Transfiguration in Vermont.
Please be generous in your support of these men who are answering God’s call.
Please note: This collection is not an initiative
of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops
‘Do not be
deaf to the
Lord’s call. If
He calls you to
follow this
path, do not
pull your oars
into the boat,
but trust Him.’
