The Italian Parish of Indianapolis
B envenuto! Welcome to Holy Rosary
Church! Whether you are a lifelong
parishioner, a first-time visitor to our
parish, or someone in between, we
are grateful you have joined us today.
Founded in 1909 as the Italian Parish of
Indianapolis, we continue to serve as
the parish home of people of Italian
heritage and also embrace all Catholics
in union with Rome, including those
devoted to the Traditional Latin Mass
(Extraordinary Form) and the Anglican
Usage of the Roman Rite.
In the words of our founding pastor,
Msgr. Marino Priori:
“The church is the temple of the
Lord, the gate of heaven. Come after a
week of earthly cares, after so much
toil, after so many sorrows, after so
much pain. Rest your limbs. Regenerate
your spirit at the sources of grace.
Raise your mind to God; thank Him for
the benefits received through His
creation and in daily life; ask for
strength so you can win all of life’s
struggles, and be able to possess the
fruits of redemption.”

T his Thursday we celebrate the Transfiguration of
the Lord in the presence of Peter, James and
John. A short time prior to this in the Gospel, Peter
had confessed that he believed Jesus to be the Christ,
the Messiah, the chosen one of God. However, when
Christ had revealed to him and the disciples the reality
of a suffering savior who would be crucified and die,
the disciples were shocked. They expected a king.
They expected the Messiah to throw the Romans out
and to reestablish a Jewish nation.
From the day Peter confessed that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of the living God, the Master
“began to show His disciples that He must go to
Jerusalem and suffer many things … and be
killed, and on the third day be raised.” Peter
scorns this prediction, nor do the others under-
stand it any better than he” (Catechism of the Catho-
lic Church, No. 554).
Jesus was not and would not be the insurgent mili-
tary messiah they expected. While He was the Son of
God, He had chosen the route of humility and service
in order to witness to the world God’s saving love and
grace. However, He wanted to make sure that the dis-
ciples would not lose faith in the Son of God as the
Messiah. He also wanted to strengthen them against
the scandal of His suffering and humiliation in which
He, by the end, undoubtedly looked less than human
and much less than God. Therefore, Jesus gave them
the vision, the gift, of seeing Him glorified.
The Catechism (Nos. 555-556) teaches:
For a moment Jesus discloses His divine glory,
confirming Peter’s confession. He also reveals
that He will have to go by the way of the cross
at Jerusalem in order to “enter into His
glory” (Lk. 24:26). Moses and Elijah had seen
God’s glory on the Mountain; the Law and the
Prophets had announced the Messiah’s suffer-
ings. Christ’s Passion is the will of the Father:
the Son acts as God’s servant; the cloud indi-
cates the presence of the Holy Spirit. “The
whole Trinity appeared: the Father in the voice;
the Son in the man; the Spirit in the shining
cloud” (St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiæ).
“[Christ,] You were transfigured on the moun-
tain, and Your disciples, as much as they were
capable of it, beheld Your glory, O Christ our

Appunti del Parroco: a Message from the Pastor
The Transfiguration of the Lord
The “Transfiguration” was the last painting by Raf-
faello Sanzio — the famous “Raphael.” Completed just
before the artist’s death in 1520, it was commissioned
by Giulio Cardinal de' Medici, the bishop of Narbonne
and the future Pope Clement VII, for his cathedral of S.
Giusto. However, the painting was never sent to the
French cathedral. After Raphael's death, the cardinal
decided to keep it for himself. He subsequently donated
it to the church of S. Pietro in Montorio where it was
placed over the high altar. It eventually found its way to
the Vatican Museums, where it resides today.
The altarpiece illustrates two episodes narrated in suc-
cession in Matthew’s Gospel: the Transfiguration above,
with Christ in glory between the prophets Moses and
Elijah; and below, in the foreground, the meeting of the
Apostles with the obsessed youth who will be miracu-
lously cured by Christ on his return from Mount Tabor.
In Raphael’s biography, written by the famous artist
and biographer of the 16th century, Giorgio Vasari, the
painting is called “the most famous, the most beautiful
and most divine” of Raphael’s works.

PANDEMIC PROTOCOLS
AT HOLY ROSARY CHURCH
W e ask that greater charity be exercised in our
church during the ongoing pandemic. While
COVID-19 may not concern you, it does worry others.
The following guidelines are in place to help ease fears
and prevent the spread of the coronavirus among our
congregation:
Advance signup required for most Sunday Masses
If you are coming to a Saturday evening or Sunday
Mass inside the church, sign up in advance. This helps
us keep attendance within acceptable limits. Every week
we email new links to online signup forms. To sub-
scribe to this email notification service, send your email
address to [email protected]. (Advance signup
isn’t necessary for attending the 9:30 a.m. Sunday
Mass, which is outdoors, weather permitting.)
Social distancing necessary indoors, outdoors
Please maintain a distance of at least six feet between
your household and others at all times, indoors and out-
doors. This applies not only to when you are sitting in
pews (or chairs at the outdoor Mass), but also to when
you are standing in line for Holy Communion or kneel-
ing at the altar rail.
Sanitize your pew immediately before leaving
Sanitize your pew immediately before leaving. This
will require you to bring disinfectant wipes or a disin-
fectant spray and paper towels. (We also recommend
that you disinfect your pew upon arrival.)
State requires masks to be worn in church
The State of Indiana requires masks to be worn by all
people over age 8, and ages 2-7 are strongly encouraged
to do so. The governor has said exceptions will be made
for medical purposes, strenuous activity, eating and
drinking.
Leave nothing in the church or vestibule
Do not leave any items in our vestibule or church —
no books, no pamphlets, no holy cards, or anything else.
This has been our policy for quite some time, and is es-
pecially to be followed during this time of pandemic
when these items may become another source of conta-
gion.
Also, please dispose of any parish-provided worship
aids that you use during Mass, such as music sheets and
Latin Mass prayer sheets. A trash can is located next to
the front door of the church just for this purpose.

One date, two sources of light
E very Aug. 6 I am struck by the confluence of
the Church’s liturgical observation of the
Transfiguration of the Lord and the anniversary
of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hi-
roshima, Japan, in 1945. The former has the Sec-
ond Person of the
Holy Trinity showing
His divinity to the
apostles Peter, James
and John: “And He
was transfigured before them, and His face shone
like the sun, and His garments became white as
light” (Matt. 17:2). The latter has man descending
deep into darkness — ironically with a brilliant
flash of light.
Joan Hinton, a graduate student who observed
the first atomic bomb test on July 16, 1945, in
New Mexico described the blast: “It was like be-
ing at the bottom of an ocean of light. We were
bathed in it from all directions. The light with-
drew into the bomb as if the bomb sucked it up.
Then it turned purple and blue and went up and
up and up.”
The light from the test blast could be seen for 20
miles. Worried residents were told that an ammu-
nition dump had exploded. Years ago I read an
account that claimed a Vatican observer of the
test told the pope, “The sun has been outshined.”
Some estimates say 100,000 people or more
died in Hiroshima, and tens of thousands more
were killed when another bomb fell on Nagasaki
three days later. Nearly all of the dead were non-
combatants, innocent men, women and children.
The Church teaches that such “indiscriminate de-
struction” of cities deserves “unequivocal con-
demnation” (Gaudium et spes, 80 § 3).
My senior thesis in high school defended the
decision to drop the bombs on Japan. Four dec-
ades wiser, I still struggle to fault President Tru-
man, who sought to end the war before even more
lives could be lost in an invasion of the Japanese
mainland. I may even owe my very existence to
his decision: My father was an 18-year-old sailor
who would have been part of the invasion force;
his death then would have rendered my concep-
tion impossible.
As we celebrate the Transfiguration, let us pray
that the bombs’ victims may rest in God’s perpet-
ual light, and that mankind may be enlightened in
such a way that no one will ever again face a de-
cision on whether to use such evil weapons.

God, so that when they should see You cruci-
fied they would understand that Your Passion

You truly are the splendor of the Fa-
ther” (Byzantine Liturgy).
… The Transfiguration gives us a foretaste
of Christ’s glorious coming, when He “will
change our lowly body to be like His glorious
body” (Phil. 3:21). But it also recalls that “it is
through many persecutions that we must en-
ter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22):
“Peter did not yet understand this when he
wanted to remain with Christ on the moun-
tain. It has been reserved for you, Peter, but
for after death” (sermon of St. Augustine).
We, as Christians in the modern age, need to re-
member the lesson of St. Peter: There is glory, but
the true glory awaits after this life.
