English Language Unit 1English Language Unit 1Phony (adj.) Something that is not genuine; a fake or imitation.
British thieves and swindlers of old used many secret codewords. One such word was fawney, which referred to a gilt ring. They would sell these, saying that they were made of real gold. But the rings were not genuine gold, and the word phony – from fawney – came to be used for anything that is fake or not genuine.

1: Phonetics & Phonology1: Phonetics & Phonology
Phonetics is the study of speech sounds and how to transcribe them.Phonology is the study of sound systems.

![Page 9: L1 - Introduction to English Language](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022042602/55a747ed1a28ab3a518b47f0/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
2: Morphology & Lexicology2: Morphology & Lexicology
Think of shape. The word ‘morph’ means shape, so morphology and ‘lexi’ means word in Ancient Greek, so morphology and lexicology will always have something to do with shape of words ie prefixes, spelling etc.
Morphology is the study of structure or forms of words.Lexicology is the study of words.
