The Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the Spirit of Vocations: Our Parish Family

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Patrick: This coming Monday, October 9th, we celebrate Columbus Day and the discovery of America by the “outside world.” As we enjoy a day of rest from our regular routines, we give thanks for living in a country filled with many opportunities as well as the great gift of freedom. Let us also pause to pray for and remember those who are suffering from any kind of discrimination, pain caused by economic hardship, and the evils of senseless violence. We are people of faith called to put into action the teachings of Jesus Christ which is the Way, the Truth, and the Life as our Savior Himself reminds us. I want to encourage all of our young people starting with our third graders and older from both our school and religious education program to consider joining the ranks of our awesome altar servers. A training session is scheduled for this coming Tuesday, October 10th beginning at 6pm in the church. Altar serving is a great opportunity for our young people to learn more about the importance of celebrating Mass as well as feeling a special part of the prayer of our faith family. I always receive great compliments on our wonderful serving crew from our own parishioners as well as those visiting us on special occasions. It is inspirational to watch them grow each year in faith, poise and maturity. For more information about the training session or what is involved with altar serving, please call the Parish Office: 630-257-4640. A registration form can be downloaded from the home page of our website: www.StPatrickLemont.org

Next weekend, October 14th and 15th, Mr. Mark Hughes from our parish family, will be speaking after Communion at all of our Masses about the Dynamic Catholic Mass Journal project. Mark, our Dynamic Catholic Ambassador from St. Patrick Parish, will be sharing with us how we can use the “Mass Journal” to actively participate more fully in the Liturgy and to set some realistic goals for ourselves; putting our faith into action on a daily basis.

Please remember to fill your “baby bottles” with your loose change. Your generous sacrifices make such a difference to young single mothers trying their best to provide a healthy environment for their children in which to thrive. Thank you for celebrating Respect Life Month, and the Month of Mary, in such a profound way. Enjoy the pictures featuring Mike O’Neill and Tim Callahan, from the Deacon Candidacy ceremony up at Mundelein last Sunday (See page 7). Please continue to keep these two fine men along with their families in your hearts and prayers as they continue their preparation for service to the Church as Permanent Deacons. Lastly, I will be away from the parish on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 17th and 18th to complete my studies from Northwestern Kellogg School of Professional Leadership for pastors. On Wednesday evening, Cardinal Cupich will be on hand to celebrate with all the participants and to present us with our official graduate certificates. I have found this program very engaging, challenging, and useful in my everyday role as pastor in serving you. Thank you for allowing me to step away now and then so that I can continue my lifelong formation goals of being a better person, a better man of faith, and a better servant of you, God’s true Church!

With peace and blessings,

THE TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 3

Dear Fr. Kurt, “Exactly what does a Closed Office mean? Does this mean that no one is in the office for us when we need them? We have big events happening at St. Patrick’s here and there, just how can we properly support these events and fundraisers when the office is closed on holidays, weekends and half or all of every Friday? Why can’t you simply be open whenever I need you? How do I communicate with the office when no one is there after my own work hours are over? Please clarify, am I missing something here?” Wondering Parishioner Dear Wondering: Your dentist, doctors and schools have office hours. The same is true of the St. Patrick Parish Office, except several of the parish staff not only have duties on weekdays, but weekends as well. These duties are occasionally confidential, thus, a little bit vague; or they can seem convoluted and mysterious in nature because you are not involved in them, but they are still necessary. Some parishioners can only attend meetings with staff on weekday evenings, weekend mornings or weekend evenings. Some can visit the office during “regular office hours” and others cannot. In the case of our parish, it is impractical and impossible to “man” the office 24/7. But, we do have “Regular Office Hours” posted on our door, on our website, on our answering machine and even in our bulletin each week. We do our very best to make sure the hours are “posted” for all to see and be certain that there are rarely surprises, though surprises do happen and some very human mistakes can occur. We have an answering system which records messages. Sue, our secretary checks these messages remotely from wherever she might happen to be, even during holidays, weekends and planned time off. Her extension is “3” and mine is “6”. Sue knows how to reach me in the event of a daytime weekday or weekend emergency, and she is able to take care of many “urgent” situations as needed. This also however, illustrates that if a loved one is expected to go home to God and has not yet been anointed, you need to contact me as soon as you can. Please do not wait until the last minute or the middle of the night to call for an anointing of the sick; the response may not be immediate if I am in deep sleep and do not hear the phone ring after hours and the message is left on voicemail. During this time of Renew My Church, we should all be well aware that there are, and certainly will continue to be, fewer and fewer priests available to respond to emergency calls. This is the unfortunate reality of the 21st Century.

The best advice I can give anyone who wants to visit campus when the office is closed? Call or email ahead to make arrangements with Sue. Oft times the staff will stay past office hours, or come in on days off to assist anyone who cannot have their needs met during office hours for whatever reason. Planning is the key word. If you know you need to talk to Sue or someone else in the office, drop something off, schedule a Mass intention, or even get in touch with another parish leader or ministry volunteer, call or email in advance, Sue does her best to assist you in making this happen, even when the office is closed or during lunch breaks. As you may know, Sue is here on many weekends volunteering at Mass, if you would

like to meet after or prior to a Mass, call or email ahead to make an appointment with her. Often when you see her before or after weekend Mass, she is on her way to a scheduled meeting or just finishing up some emergent work. She may ask you to send her an email if your need is not an emergency. I know on Fridays, the office is “closed” after 11:30am. Why? We know it is not an ideal situation, but some office work requires strict uninterrupted attention to detail, so staff is still on campus working, but need concentration time. Some staff duties are spread out at odd times and in odd places which require attention outside the office or outside of office hours. Friday afternoon is when many things are attended to in the church building itself or out in the community. It can even be a time when staff is taking care of their own personal lives and appointments so that they can more easily come to work on Saturday and/or Sunday (Please note: Sue does not count her music ministry in her work hours). Funeral meetings, wedding meetings, Archdiocesan workshops, and special attention to Mission Guests, are among the many events taking place here on the weekends which can prevent staff from tending to their own necessary appointments and families… so closing each Friday for a time is a necessary evil. I would like to take some of this space to publicly thank the spouses and families of our staff for allowing them to be here at St. Patrick; for allowing them to do the work of the parish during such odd hours and irregular hours; for allowing them to come in during their own family crisis, emergencies, and special events; for so very often interrupting: family meals, homework time, personal appointments and even their own well-earned infrequent vacations (often canceling them all together), so they can best serve the needs of the parish. We are lucky to have such a dedicated staff with such patient families. Let me sum up: even when the office is “officially closed’, it is not necessarily inaccessible to parishioners - it just might take a little extra thought and planning on both ends to work things out. The staff is hard at work at all hours of the day and night and do their best to serve you, the people of St. Patrick Parish. Peace, Fr. Kurt

We encourage you to fill the baby bottles with loose change and bills. Money raised will benefit women who are choosing life despite experiencing difficult pregnancies as well as their children. Please be generous.

First Reconci l ia t ion Parents of 2nd graders (school and RE program) who will be celebrating the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist this year will have the

parent meeting on Wednesday, October 25th at 6:05pm in the church. The meetings will take no more than an hour.

Class Schedule There will be no RE classes this week, Sunday, October 8th or Wednesday, October 11th, due to Columbus Day. Classes resume on Sunday the 15th and Wednesday the 18th.

Did you misplace your RE schedule? No problem! The RE schedule can be found on the parish Google Calendar on our website and in pdf form on the RE page. Visit: www.StPatrickLemont.org to consult the schedule!

CALLING ALL CHILDREN!!!

Does your child enjoy singing? We are looking for children who have a desire to share their talents and sing for God’s greater glory. The Children’s Choir will sing for Christmas, Easter and Mother’s Day (last Mass for the season), and there will be three solid rehearsals (3 weeks) prior to Christmas and Easter, and two rehearsals (2 weeks) prior to Mother’s Day. Please watch the church bulletins for upcoming rehearsal information for these special days! If you have any questions, please feel free to see me after most weekend Masses or email me directly at [email protected]. How fun would it be to see a nice group of bubbling-over-with-enthusiasm children worshipping for our liturgies! Christina Grinius, Director of Music

SPRED is a program of growing in faith for people with Down Syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsey with a developmental delay, or learning problems from 6 to well into their 80’s no matter their abilities. These people have a right to grow in their faith; but they need a way that is better suited to how they relate to life. The SPRED program is specially designed to meet this

need. We are looking for adult volunteers to welcome these people living in our parish or neighborhood. Since SPRED is not a classroom model of religious education, we need adult volunteers who will be trained to form a small community of faith and grow in their own faith as they welcome people of a particular age group. An interested person does not need experience with these people or have a degree in special education. They just need a willingness to grow in their faith, be people who enjoy meeting others, and want to welcome our friends. Join Carol and others for a Spred Informational Gathering for Parents and interested men and women on Monday, October 9, 7pm, in the St. Patrick Ministry Building classroom 8. We need your help!

Fr. Joshua West and missionaries will be running the next Youth Ministry meetings which will take place in the St. Patrick Parish Hall from 6-8pm. Special thanks to all who took part in assembling of emergency kits

for the homeless in this area!!!! A wonderful act of Mercy!!

Public Rosary to Celebrate 100 Year Anniversary of Fatima

October is not only the month of the rosary but, this year, October is the 100-year anniversary of the Blessed Mother’s apparitions to the people of Fatima. On October 13, 1917, the miracle of the sun took place to the amazement of tens of thousands of people who came to witness the phenomenon. At Fatima, our Blessed Mother identified herself as the Lady of the Rosary and instructed the child seers to continue to say the rosary every day. Through Fatima, we see the role of Our Lady in world salvation and the importance of entrusting and consecrating our lives to her. To give witness to the role of Mary in our individual lives and in the life of the world, the Lemont Catholic parishes will pray the rosary along State Street on the 100-year anniversary of the October apparition. Please join us as we pray on the lawn in front of St. Alphonsus Church at 6pm on Friday, October 13th . In case of rain, we will pray in the St. Alphonsus Chapel.

St. Patrick Parish is in need of a new leader to head our Giving Tree efforts for 2017. Thank you to Cammie and Holly Lemming who had to step away from the ministry this year. Cammie is willing to provide guidance to whomever wishes to take on this ministry. Please call the parish office if you can help our Giving Tree Ministry this coming Christmas. 630-

257-4640. Without your help, the Giving Tree cannot continue. We, and the Lemont Community, thank you for your support this coming holiday season.

DID YOU KNOW….? Did you know you can schedule a Mass Intention for someone you love via email and pay for that

Mass using an envelope placed in the Sunday collection?

If you would like to schedule a Mass intention for someone you love, living or deceased, please call or email the Parish Office. Special intentions can also be made for someone who is ill, a special occasion, an anniversary, a birthday, or any day! Your family may call the Parish Office to arrange bringing up the gifts of bread and wine at that Mass. The request for this sacrificial offering is only $10, and a lovely personalized Mass card can be sent directly to your loved

one. There is no nicer way to offer tribute or better prayer you can offer those you love. Note, Saturday 4:30pm Masses fill up quite quickly, but most dates are still available for 2018. Please email special requests for Sundays at least 3 weeks in advance if possible.
