MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
It is a great honour to be elected President of the IAP-ID. I thank all members for the trust reposed in me and I will try my best to
be worthy of it. In an era when the academic discipline of
Pathology is rubbing shoulders with the frontiers of science,
IAP-ID is our window to the wider world. We need to look
outward and learn and rapidly equip ourselves with theory and
practice. For this to happen, our organization has to expand and
attract many more members especially from the younger
generation.
The signs are good as we see more participation and new
interest in recent years. We must thank the Dr Roshan Chinoy
and Secretary Dr Shantveer Uppin for the very able leadership they provided during the past two
years. Dr Francisco Couto is to be specially lauded for his role in meticulously nurturing the
organization to its current state. It is really befitting that he has been awarded the prestigious
International Academy of Pathology (IAP) Gold Medal at the world Congress of the International
Academy of Pathology (IAP) held at Cologne, Germany, in 2016 for outstanding contributions to
the IAP and Pathology Education and Research for the last twenty years. It is an honour for all of
us. We had excellent academic fare at the IAP-ID annual meet at Jaipur in December last year and
look forward to Bhopal this year for another fruitful conference. Meanwhile, the mid-year
teaching program is coming up in Chennai on the very interesting topic of 'Histo-Onco Report
Formats - What Information Does The Clinician Need To Treat The Patient'. This is highly relevant
in the current context and I hope there will be good attendance for the program. Let us resolve
this year to strengthen our organization in every way. I wish that every member will try and enrol
at least two others during the year.
Wishing everyone a fruitful year ahead
Dr. K. P. Aravindan

IAP - ID Academic Activities 2018
Dear friends,
Warm greetings to everyone of you on my behalf. I wish to thank you all for reposing the faith in me to take
on this position of great responsibility and challenges. I am hoping to take on the daunting task without
disappointing many along the way.
The transfer of bank accounts took a while in getting to Mumbai, which has resulted in delay in printing the
newsletter. Believe me, it will be our endeavor to get it out in time from the next issue onwards.
There was the very successful Annual CME held at Mumbai and the Annual Conference at Jaipur in later half of 2016, with a large international
and National faculty. A brief coverage of those meetings is enclosed in this issue. There was also the XXXI World Congress of
the IAP at Cologne, Germany, in late September that had a good representation from the Indian Division.
This year too we have a brilliant programme lined up for the Mid year teaching Programme at Chennai in first weekend of June. I am
hoping that the young pathologists will use this as an opportunity to take full benefit of the topic of Histo-Onco report formats to hone
their skills in writing out standardised reports. I am grateful to Dr. Kirti Chadha and her team for organising this wonderful teaching session.
I am deeply indebted to Dr. Francisco Couto for his guidance and constant encouragement to take over and handle this responsibility. He
has been a go-to person for all and sundry. It is no surprise that his 20 long years of experience with various positions in the IAP-ID have
given him an insight into its working that many don't possess. So it was only appropriate that his activities got recognised by the IAP in the
form of bestowing the gold medal to him….heartiest Congratulations!! I wish to thank Brig Dr. V. Srinivas for his contribution as Councillor
in the IAP-ID committee and welcome aboard Dr. Nuzhat Hussain, in that position. I am thankful to my predecessor, Dr. Shantveer G.
Uppin, for letting me in into the nuances required to handle the role and look forward to working with the team and the President,
Dr. K. P. Aravindan. I hope the IAP-ID will continue to grow and prosper and fulfil its aims of spreading knowledge and education in the
country and in making its presence felt on a larger scale at the world stage.
Best wishes for a fulfilling year to all of you and your families.
Dr. Anita S. Bhaduri, MD,Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID,
P. D. Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai

IAP-ID Congratulates Dr. Francisco Couto on receiving the prestigious Gold Medal Award ofthe IAP
It is a matter of great pride for the IAP-ID that Dr. Francisco Couto was recently awarded the prestigious Gold Medal
of the International Academy of Pathology (IAP). Very few individuals in the IAP have received this high honour
which is conferred for signal contributions to the aims and objectives of the IAP. On its web site the IAP describes
the Gold Medal as an award "for members of the Academy demonstrating leadership by creating and fostering
Academy activities that are of International significance". He has joined the select company of previous recipients
of high international repute, such as Robin Cooke of Australia and Juan Rosai of the USA amongst others.
The long association with, and the yeoman service of Francis Couto to the IAP-ID is well known to all its members
and to the wider community of pathologists in India, especially postgraduates, who attend the annual meetings of the IAPM and the thrice
yearly meetings of the IAP-ID. Nevertheless, it would not be out of place to highlight the contributions that Francis has made to both the IAP-ID
and the parent IAP which culminated in his being the choice of the IAP for the Gold Medal Award of 2016.
Francis took over as secretary of the IAP-ID in 1997 and continued by popular demand till 2008 when, also by popular demand, he was elevated
to the post of President. During his tenure as secretary, the membership of the organization increased by leaps and bounds, the newsletter
became a regular means of communication amongst the members, an annual CME was started, a web site in collaboration with Dr. Johnson
was created and the financial health of the IAP-ID improved from a five digit to a seven digit number. In 2009, Francis took over the reins asthPresident of the IAP-ID for the mandated 2 years. His crowning achievement was the successful and much talked about 6 Asia Pacific Congress
of the IAP held in Kochi. After his highly successful tenure as Secretary and then President Francis now remains on the council as a valued
adviser. He is also Vice president for Asia of the IAP.
Francis is keenly interested in the dissemination of professional education and is always on the lookout for appropriate resource personnel
from India and abroad to speak at the various fora of the IAP-ID. His list of national and international professional acquaintances is enviable.
Which brings me to his interactions with members of the IAP through his strengthening of ties with the parent body. He has never missed
attending a meeting of the IAP, unless there were dire circumstances. This itself is praiseworthy, as the IAP-ID does not offer financial support
its office bearers. Even more praiseworthy is the fact that the IAP was persuaded by him that the Indian Division had earned the right to be
represented by two council members on the IAP International Council. This continues from 1998 to this day. Francis continues to serve on the
Education committee of the IAP. This is an influential position which has resulted in our Division forging ties with other Divisions like the British
Division and the IAP-ID being asked to revive and invigorate smaller Divisions in the region viz. Nepal. Through his advocacy on behalf of the
IAP-ID, India has had the distinction of having had individuals serving as Vice President for Asia. Before this the VP position for Asia was usually
filled from a division in the far east.
One can truly say that Francis has used his organizational skills and his own brand of persuasive charm to further the interests of the IAP-ID in
India and abroad. Through his effort he has emphasized that the IAP-ID is a body that does not just talk but acts. His contributions to Indian
professional education and the furtherance of the aims of the IAP have resulted in his being honoured by this Gold Medal Award. The IAP-ID
now basks in the glory that Francis has earned.
Well done Dr. Franciso Couto. The IAP-ID appreciates all that you have done on its behalf and looks forward to your active participation in its
future endeavours.. Congratulations again!

The Scientific Programme was followed by the General Body Meeting of the IAP-ID. President of the IAP-ID Dr. Roshan F. Chinoy chaired
the Meeting and called the Meeting to order. The meeting began by passing a Resolution congratulating Dr. Francisco Couto on being
awarded the IAP Gold Medal. The Resolution read as follows “IAP-ID would like to put on record its congratulations to Dr. Francisco Couto
who is the recipient of the IAP Gold Medal 2016. The IAP-ID is very proud of the singular honour that the parent body, the IAP, has bestowed on
Dr. Francisco Couto. If the IAP-ID as an organization has reached the level of credibility it has in the world forum, it is largely due to the
enormous effort Dr. Francisco Couto has put in as Secretary and then as its President. The IAP has awarded the Gold Medal to him for his
distinguished services as Vice-President IAP, Council member and Member of the Education Committee, where he has contributed not only to
our Indian Division, but has taken on the responsibility of the growth of the Nepali Division” and placing this on the official record. President
IAP-ID Dr. Roshan Chinoy moved that the contents of her Inaugural speech lauding Dr. Francisco Couto for his contributions and achievements
and for being awarded the IAP Gold Medal be also placed on record which was passed by the General Body. The Secretary & Treasurer,
Dr. Shantveer G. Uppin read out the Minutes of the last General Body Meeting held on 3rd December 2015 at 5 p.m. at Le Meridien Convention Center, Kochi; the Annual Report of the Secretary & Treasurer for 2015 - 2016, and Audited Accounts for the Year 2015 - 2016, and these were
duly approved by the members. It was suggested that efforts to be made to consolidate the entire funds of IAP-ID into one account rather than
having one account at Goa and the other at the place of stay of the Secretary & Treasurer, IAP-ID. Dr. Francisco Couto explained the reason why
two accounts were being maintained on account of the advice of the Chartered Accountant and as far as possible the accounts would be
consolidated. President Dr. Roshan F. Chinoy and Secretary & Treasurer, Dr. Shantveer G. Uppin having completed their 2 year and 4 year terms
respectively, elections were held for these posts. Dr. K. P. Aravindan (Calicut) was elected as new President and Dr. Anita S. Bhaduri was elected
as new Secretary & Treasurer. Councilor Brig V. Srinivas having completed his two year term, elections were held for the post and Dr. Nuzhat
Husain (Lucknow) was elected as the new Councilor. President IAP-ID Dr. Roshan F. Chinoy and other members present congratulated
Dr. K. P. Aravindan, Dr. Anita S. Bhaduri and Dr. Nuzhat Husain on their election to their respective posts. On behalf of the members
present, Dr. Francisco Couto thanked the out going Office Bearers Dr. Roshan Chinoy, Dr. Shantveer Uppin and Brig. V. Srinivas for their
services to the IAP-ID. It was decided that the IAP-ID Annual Meeting 2017 would be held, as usual, at venue of the IAPM Conference and
would be at Bhopal, to be organized by Dr. Reeni Malik (Professor & Head of Pathology, Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal) and group.
Besides the Guest Lecture and a Slide Seminar by the invited foreign speaker it was decided that the Slide Seminar would be on “Breast
Core Biopsy” to be moderated by Dr. Amanjit (PGIMER, Chandigarh) and the Symposium on “Pathology of Sudden Death” to be
moderated by Dr. Pradeep Vaideeshwar (Mumbai). The Mid-Year Teaching Programme 2017 was allotted to Dr. Kirti Chadha, Associate
New Delhi),
10
Vice President Academics, Innovation & Integrated Oncopathology, Consultant Oncopathologist, Metropolis Healthcare Ltd. on the theme “Histo Report Formats - What information does the clinician need to treat the patient” with suggestion to restrict the topic to Oncology reports. In addition, with regards to venue for the meeting, Surat or Trichur were suggested as the preferred venues. The IAP-ID 20th Annual
CME 2017 was allotted to Brig. Reena Bharadwaj, Professor & HOD, Department of Pathology, Armed Forces Medical College, Pune on “Update
on Salivary Gland Pathology”. There was a suggestion that there be a Presidential Oration for the IAP-ID which was not accepted by the General
Body and it was pointed out that the IAP does not have such an activity and the IAP-ID being a Division of the IAP follows its constitution and
rules. As regards the proposal to bid for International Congress of International Academy of Pathology (IAP) in India at a future date, Dr. Anita
Borges, Chairperson of the committee constituted to the study feasibility of hosting such a meeting in India presented her report. She stated
that though there were few venues in India suitable for hosting such an event, hosting such a huge event would require lot of finances and
other logistics including the Government support which was not feasible under the current circumstances. After due discussion by the General
Body, it was unanimously decided to drop the idea to bid for said Congress in the foreseeable future.
On behalf of the IAP-ID, Dr. Roshan F. Chinoy (President IAP-ID) and Dr. Shantveer G. Uppin (Secretary & Treasurer IAP-ID) thanked Dr. Alberto
Mario Marchevsky, Dr. Ashim Das and his team Dr. Uma Nahar Saikia and Dr. Sharada Rane and their panellists for their contribution to the
success of the scientific programme. On behalf of the IAP-ID, Dr. Shantveer G. Uppin expressed thanks to Dr. (Mrs) Ajay Yadav (Organizing
Chairperson), Prof. Dilip Ramrakhiani (Organizing Secretary) and their team for hosting the meeting. The meeting was then concluded and
declared closed by the President Dr. Roshan F. Chinoy.

EDITOR’S COLUMN :
It is a great privilege for me to take on the reins of the editorship from my very experienced predecessors. The association of IAP-ID
has always taken the lead in nurturing academic excellence by holding at least 3 teaching and CME programmes in the year at various
destinations within the country. The newsletter is a means of communicating the happenings and events at various CMEs and
meetings of the IAP held across the country and worldwide.
This first issue for 2017 is particularly interesting since it gives us a glimpse into the evolution and growth of the organization by a very able
person, Dr. Francisco Couto, who has led it from its infancy to adulthood. It comes as no surprise then that he was chosen to be honoured
by the parent body of the IAP for his contributions. Dr. Anita Borges, who has known him very closely, writes eloquently about the
association of Dr. Couto and the growth of IAP-ID.
The meetings held in the second half of 2016, namely the XIXth Annual CME at Mumbai and the IAP-ID CME with APCON2016 at
Jaipur are being showcased as well for the benefit of those who could not attend.
We have tried to select out upcoming meetings and courses being conducted worldwide which could be of benefit to our members. I
am requesting all of you to encourage at least 2 new members from your organisation including the postgraduates to allow the IAP-ID to
prosper and grow in the coming years.
This newsletter cannot be sustained without active contribution from all members, both professionally and with suggestions for
improving the format. If we can get some sponsors for the newsletter it would certainly go some distance in helping the finances stay
healthy. The advertisements and DD for the same can be mailed to the office of the Secretary & Treasurer at Mumbai.
I hope you enjoy reading it !
