L-band test stations in End Station B
Richard Swent
Modulator and Klystron Testing
• We need to test two modulators and two klystrons for the ILC project
• We are testing 2 modulators designs for reliability and cost-effectiveness
• 2 Klystron designs are being evaluated for reliability and efficiency
• The RF produced will not be used for anything, just measured and dissipated
2 ILC-class modulators
• One, “Marx”, made at SLAC
• One, “direct switch”, coming from Diversified Technologies (DTI) in Mass.
• Both must meet ILC specs:
• 120 kV at 140 Amps
• 1.7 msec pulses at 5 Hz
• 29 kjoules per pulse
Station Equipment
• Each test stand has– Modulator w/ Power Supply– Oil Tank with:
• Water Load• Filament Xfmr• Klystron (Vertical now, horizontal later)
– Instrumentation and Controls
• Each test stand will run independently, 24/7, with summary data archived for trends, detailed data for every fault
End Station B West End
This is the part of End Station B where we will put 2 new test stands.
Shielding Wall
Removal of the shielding wall is required before any new installation can proceed.
This is what the area looked like at the beginning of 2007.

Marx Modulator
• Preliminary testing in B015
• Delivery to ESB later this year
DTI Modulator
• Status unknown—DTI ran out of money before the modulator was completed, and they did not get the follow-on SBIR grant they wanted.
Klystrons: 2x 5 MW outputs
Toshiba klystronBeing built, will arrive in
October
SLAC Sheet BeamBeing designed, should
arrive in Spring 2008
Loads and tanks
• Each tank can hold a vertical klystron, a water load, and a filament transformer
• Water loads will be able to take the full output of a modulator in the absence of a klystron
Most tank parts have been received. Some small modifications are needed.
Water Loads
Old New
Electrical Power – Phase I
SN
LCW Phase I
We need 400 gpm of water for two test stands.
Regulator and controls will be outside, with pipes emerging behind the clean room.
Tie-in will occur in early September.
Floor Plan
Controls and LLRF
• Commercial instruments have been ordered:– Frequency source– Function generators– Booster amplifiers– Peak power meter (not ordered yet, but soon)
• Custom LLRF hardware is being built, based on existing designs:– IQ modulator– Pulse width controller– RMS detectors
Schedule
• Wall removal August 2007• Water Cut-In September 2007• Marx Modulator Oct 2007• DTI Modulator ??• Tanks and Water Loads July 2007• Toshiba Klystron Oct 2007• Sheet Beam Klystron Spring 2008
