Salt Rock earned its name in Shaka’s day –his lovely handmaidens would languidlystroll onto the rocks at low tide and harvestall the sea salt left over from the tide. Thissalt would then be used to barter for much-needed goods from the Colonial settlers aswell as traders passing through the area.Salt Rock also has its own popular tidalpool, and lifeguards scour the beach all

week with their mission to ensure safeswimming and fun in the sun. The beachhas great fishing spots and a selection ofgreat offshore reefs to keep divers’ headsdown. If you’re keen to rough it, the caravanpark is little more than a five-iron away fromthe beach. Oh, for that morning stretch anddeep breath of sea air without breaking thebank for the privilege!

A small little village encircled by vast fieldsof sugarcane, Gingindlovu means “swallowerof the elephant” in the Zulu tongue, but forthe colonial settlers it was more like“swallower of the foreign tongue”. Most ofthe colonial ‘visitors’ struggled to make areasonable sound out of pronouncing thename, often light-heartedly referring to it as“Gin-Gin I Love You”. Gingindlovu was thesite of a military kraal run by Cetshwayo …the same man who won a famous battleagainst his halfbrother Mbulazi and hiswarriors at Ndondakusuka. That victoryallowed him to claim control of the ZuluKingdom. The famous Battle of Gingindlovu(2 April, 1879) was the result of one ofCetshwayo’s regiments of 11,000 impisattacking 6000 British forces who wereapproaching eShowe (the town was thenunder siege from Zulu warriors). The Britishdrove the Zulus away and brought to anend two months of attrition and isolation. Monument to the famous Battle of Gingindlovu.

MTUNZINIMtunzini is set in a wild region of coastalforest and mangrove swamps, but the countryclub offers tennis, squash and a 9-hole golfcourse. John Dunn, the former advisor toZulu chief Cetshwayo, lived here with hisarmy of wives: almost 50 in total, grossinga total of 117 children – so there’s definitelysomething to be said for the sea breeze andthe ocean views!

UMLALAZI NATURE RESERVELying at the northern point of the aMatikuluNature Reserve (big game and foresteddunes), uMlalazi is big enough to host afew hundred people. The fishing is great, and watersports enthusiasts can really lettheir hair down, even though the beach isn’t‘protected’ by shark nets. Long, tropicalbeaches, lagoon and mangrove swamps areall great ‘out of season’, while twitchersneeding to still tick off the wooly-neckedstork or palmnut vulture will be busy!

eShowe has an interesting history datingfrom 1860 when missionary settlers fromNorway established the KwaMondi Mission.Later Fort eShowe was built around themission and was the scene, during the Anglo-Zulu War, of forces under Colonel Pearstonbeing beseiged for 10 weeks in 1879. Thename KwaMondi was derived from the Zuluname given to Ommund C Oftebro, the firstpastor of the Norwegian Mission.During King Shaka's rule Coward's Bush wasthe spot where suspected cowards had theircourage and resolve tested … while defeatedsoldiers were executed at this same place. The spot is now flagged for visitors by thepresence of a National Monument Councilplaque at an old Kei apple tree.

A fine collection of Zulu arts and crafts ishoused at Vukani Museum and Fort Nonqaiis now an excellent museum housing a greatnumber of Zulu cultural items, one of whichis a replica of the beer mug Queen Victoriagave to King Cetsh.

Spreading from the Tugela River up northto the border of Mozambique, Zululand wasformerly ruled by the great Zulu warrior king,Shaka. Great wars and battles were foughtin the 19th century between the Zulus andthe British, and the Voortrekkers also gotinvolved in hostilities against both sides. The wonderful culture of the Zulu nation ison show at museums such asuMgundgundlovu (Dingane’s capital) andOndini Museum situated at uLundi, as wellas eShowe's Fort Nonqai. The iSimangaliso(St Lucia) Wetland Park and the MaputalandMarine Reserve are interesting conservationareas, and along the coast there are beautifulbeaches, with Lake Sibaya, Kosi Bay andSodwana Bay all well worth a visit. Fortourists there is the pleasure of swimming, scuba diving, surfing and snorkelling in the

warm Indian Ocean waters, with deep-seagame fishing for anglers. Game parks in thisregion are renowned, numbered amongstthem the famous Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, whoseincredible effort in saving the white rhinohas been a major feather in their conservationcap. For keen game watchers a visit to otherreserves such as Mkuzi, Ithala and Ndumois recommended. Tourists can also elect tovisit the more exclusive private game reserves- there is plenty of accommodation to pleaseall sorts of personal requirements andindividual budgets (ranging from the boldto the pitiful!).
