Gday again folks and welcome to windy, rainy Bali for another week. Ifind it amazing that this time of year is the busy time in Bali with theseason being the wettest and the windiest of the year. I was sat up at alocal haunt the other day and listened as a group of young touristscompared storys about how deep the roadway was covered in water atthe front of their hotel due to all the rain we have had and couldn't helpbut wonder if they even thought about the tropical destination before

they headed over. One young traveller in particular mentioned the highwinds that the island has been having and lamented that a kite surfing business would be a good idea for thebeach. I can see the headlines now Traveller breaks neck in Bali beach accident I can think of better thingsto do while on holidays like gargling straight bleach and throwing myself off a balcony. Why the hell wouldyou undertake such a phsyically demanding task as kite surfing when there are so many comfy bar stools andpool li lo's to be used in unisen with a cold green bottle or two whilst on holiday.

I remember when I was a tourist to the island, all those years ago and a big day was like white water rafting inthe wet season while the rains where heavy. For those of you that havent worked it out, it's the best time to doit as the river has plenty of water flowing which helps make it an exciting day. At best you just sit in the raftand let the others paddle and simply enjoy the senery.

Anyways back to the rain and the people that book for the Christmas break to Bali, what do you expect? It's atropical climate and at this time of year it rains and rain it does. You will notice that many of the buildingshave been specially made to cater for the incredible downpours we have and the drainage system is a directresult of the rain. I remember sitting in a bar on Legion street one night in the middle of the wet season andwatching the rain completely fill the road in under twenty minutes. The rain came down so hard that one car

which was parked under a downpipe spout aimed at the road from a second storey roof was literally waterblasting the vehicle directly at the passengers door and when the vehicle owners turned up to jump in their carand head home the passenger got absolutely drenched when they tried to get in the car. It was funny to watchas they had clearly spent the evening doing their best to keep dry and looked like they had enjpoyed anevening together at dinner to end the night with a brutal watering before heading home.

The water usually clears up and subsides as quickly as it comes. I witnessed this the same night I watchedLegian street become a free flowing canal. I distinctly remember the plastic cups, cigarette butts, and almostanything that floated being washed out to the nearest drain and out to sea I guess. There was another funnything I watched while sinking a few greenies and that was a crazy American who thought the torrent in frontof the pub looked like a great place to try out some body surfing and without hesitation he launches himselfinto the filthy water and proceeds to yahoo, yippy and splash around like a body surfing pro, a funny site tosay the least. There have been a few times in my life when I have watched someone do something stupid inBali and that would have to be high up on the list. I don't know what happened to the fellow as is usual on theisland he wasn't seen again. He probably contracted some diseasefrom playing in the water.

My advice is to try and not body surf in the roadway when theyflood. I wouldn't even walk through it without tough footwear. Iguess it all gets down to common sense and the execution of thesame. Ok folks I think I've said my piece for the week and I hope themost of you have as greater time as you can whilst here rememberingthat holiday is the name of the game. I hope the most of you staysafe, happy, healthy and always try to remmember, Some causehappiness wherever they go, others whenever they go

    Enjoy your week,

    ALIASJ..

JIMBARANJimbaran is just south of the airport and Kuta. This

was formerly a real backwater of south Bali, just a tinyfishing village with a daily market. That all started tochange in the 1980s and Jimbaran is now home to severalworld class 5 star beach resorts, plus a few moremoderate mid-market hotels.

There is however little in the way of budgetaccommodation and there are also many high-end villas inthis area, particularly on the ridges of high ground aboveJimbaran Bay. This has resulted in monikers such as the"Beverly Hills of Bali" or "Millionaire's Row".

The bay itself has a pleasant white sand beachand is very safe for swimming. The three clusters of grilledseafood restaurants on the beach are a major tourist drawin the evenings, as is the truly stunning sunset.

Jimbaran is also home to a Norwegian University,Gateway College, with around 500 students studyingathletics, philosphy, culture, economics and journalism. The school is located in Kedonganan close to Sari SegaraResort and in Jl, Bantas Kau where it also has a small cafe.

Jimbaran has an increasing number of rather chicshops but there is little or no nightlife here. It has theadvantage of being a little closer to Kuta and Seminyakand the cultural highlights of Central Bali.

    BALI, LOCATION TO SUIT EVERYONE

    THE BUKIT

Much has been written about this dusty, aridand rugged area, which forms the southernmost tip of the island.

Limestone cliffs of up to 100 meters in

height provide some of the best views in theworld, along with some deserted white sandybeaches.

Everyone wants a piece of this are, fr ominternational hotel chains such as Bvlgari,Versace and Banyan Tree, to establishedresidential villa developers looking for thatperfect plot. The area offers secluded beaches, and exclusivity to name but a few reasons whythis is fast becoming the place to be.

Prices have more than tripled in thearea over last 2 years alone with still plenty ofpotential to be realized, so now is a plan. Only ashort 15 minutes drive fromthe international airport, The Bukit is fast beingreferred to as the new Millionaires Row.

    Armstrong hasa l w a y sd e n i e dusing drugsand has

remained silent sinceallegations were levelled againsthim by the US Anti-DopingAgency (USADA) in October.

Cycling commentator PhilLiggett believes the Winfreyinterview will likely have yielded

"I believe he knows Oprah."He's appeared on the

Singaraja, Bali - A Relaxing Slice of ParadiseSingaraja is the old colonial capital ofBali. It is the capital city of theregency of Buleleng.

It is quite simply - cool. Figuratively andliterally. I always think of it as much cooler physicallythan other areas of Bali although I have absolutelyno scientific data to back up that assertion. Myhouse is definitely cooler when the wind is blowingin off the ocean but who says we can't be relative. This is the postmodern era, correct?

Singaraja is a fairly good-sized city (which is agood way of saying that I'm not sure what thepopulation actually is, although some friends thatrecently visited told me that according to a guidebook it was 50,000) with wide streets and a lot offriendly folks. They have been repairing things inSingaraja over the past few years and it definitelyhas a clean, open feelt o i t . T h e m a i nshopping area is onJalan Diponegoro andJalan A. Yani. There isnot much here in theway of tourist goods(masks, paintings,

jewelry) but you canbuy supplies for yourstay in the north here -

ju ice, box ed mi lk ,diapers, toilet paper, cigarettes and beermuch cheaper than ifyou buy them in thetourist area to the west.Singaraja has a gooddoctor for expats whocharges rather highprices but if you're really sick and you wantsomeone to speak English to then Dr. Gina is yourwoman. Friendly, good old-fashioned care.

What is it that is unique about this place, orwhat is it that draws me to it? Maybe it's becauseSingaraja isn't really all that unique - just anotherfriendly town in Indonesia where you can boparound, find some things that you need, meet somefine folks and live your life the way that you wantwithout interference from people that are convincedthat they know how you should live your life. Thenew government has given fol ks some hope and weall expect them to continue on with repairing theeconomy and staying out of people's daily activities.

The Singaraja area is the home of Lovina

Beach, of the well known, but as the new touristliterature proclaims, hidden treasures of Bali. In spiteof the fact that my friend has this promotionalmaterial sitting in his restaurant, I happen to agreewith it. That doesn't mean to come crowding up here.We wouldn't want Robert Redford to bring the

Sundance here or to have Californians start buildingsummer homes, but it is nice...Lovina Beach is actually a collection of villages

that are lumped together under the general name ofLovina which actually is a village. Other villages inthe Lovina area include Kalibukbuk, Anturan, andTukadmungga. The farther you get from Lovina onthe Singaraja side, the quieter things get. WhileLovina is laid back compared to Kuta, Kalibukbuk,Anturan and Tukadmungga are positively restful. Ofcourse, it can be a bit too quiet for some staying out inAnturan or Tukadmungga so they can just take a

    short bemo ride ora three K walk upt o L o v i n a t osample some ofthe night life.

While I havebeen going onabout Lovina, Iactually spendmost of my timeaway from homeover at Anturan orTukadmungga. An u m b e r o fhomestays andsmall hotels havecropped up in thepast few years inthis area. The oldpopular hotel after

years of being abandoned is now open under newmanagement - it's called Villa Agung. Homestay Sri is

still there after a number of years. Homestay Sri isalso under new management. This Sri is also beingrun by foreigners. This is the big thing now in thearea. The Westerners have moved in and eitherbought, built or leased hotels on the beach. There'sgetting to be less and less Balinese businessesthese days.

So if you want to actually relax on your vacationto Bali, you should try visiting northern Bali. Plan onspending a week or so to get to know the place. Youwon't be disappointed.

Legal ramificationsAny confession by Armstrong could have legal or

financial ramifications, particularly among big-namecorporate sponsors such as Nike that had loyally stoodby him even as doping allegations grew.

Since the International Cycling Union effectivelyerased him from the record books, Britain's The

Sunday Times has sued Armstrong for more than 1million pounds ($1.52 million) over a libel paymentmade to him in 2006.

It had paid Armstrong 300,000 pounds to settle alibel case after publishing a story suggesting he mayhave cheated, and now wants that money plus interestand legal costs repaid.

On Sunday, the Sunday Times took out an ad inthe Chicago Tribune newspaper setting out 10questions that Winfrey, whose OWN media network isbased in the Midwestern metropolis, should askArmstrong.

"Is it your intention to return the prize money youearned from September 1998 to July 2010?" read onequestion.

Armstrong's years of dominance in the sport'sgreatest race raised cycling's profile in the US to newheights.

It also gave the Texan - diagnosed in1996 with late-stage testicular cancer that

Minichiello named Roosters captainAnthony Minichiello has been namedcaptain of the Sydney Roosters for the 2013NRL season.

The 32-year-old fullback, who made his first-grade debut for the foundation club in 2000, will be

supported by four vice-captains in MitchellPearce, Jake Friend, Jared Waera-Hargreaves andBoyd Cordner, the Roosters announced on Friday.

Minichiello, who has been at the Roosterssince he was 16, was delighted to land the job.

"It's a massive honour, a huge honour to benamed captain of the Sydney Roosters - it's such ahistoric club. There's been great captains all the waythrough since 1908, it's a foundation club and we'veplayed every season in the league since 1908.

"It's a really special time for myself, my wife andmy family - they're really proud and excited.

"It's probably the most meaningful highlight ofmy career to date. It's a pretty special moment."

Rookie NRL coach Trent Robinson said he tooksome time in the off-season to assess his squadbefore Minichiello emerged from the pack.

"Since we've come back to training, it's beenclear that every day at training that Anthony's beenleading the way on and off the field," Robinson said.

"The spirit and the work ethic that we've beentrying to instil in this club, Anthony's been living it for along time now and it's time for Mini to step up and leadthe way on the field as well as being our captain."

Meanwhile NSW Origin forward Greg Bird hasbeen re-signed by the Gold Coast Titans until 2017.

The Titans said they fought off offer fromseveral other clubs to extend Bird's contract.

I think the fact that Greg has committed to theclub long term when he had big money offers fromelsewhere says a lot about the type of character he isand also how much the Titans mean to him,'' Titanschief executive David May said.

    Dear Martha,

    I recently attended a

    mates wedding in

    Bali, it was absolutely

    w o n d e r f u l . T h eceremony was at the

    big Church on Jl.

    kart ika Plaza in

    Tuban & the reception

    was held in a very

    swish restaurant in

Seminyak. The day was beautiful & the Bride

looked stunning. All the guests that attended were

well dressed & really looked like they had all made

an effort for our mates wedding, ( as they should).

The reception was winding down & we were all just

having a drink & talk before going our separate

ways for the evening when a mate that had been

invited arrived, (in shorts, t-shirt & casual sandals),

with a young lady on his arm. He walked over to thegroom shook his hand without any apology or

reason for his extremely late arrival nor did he

introduce the young lady. The groom made a joke of

his tardiness; however, I found this to be terribly

rude & disrespectful, I wondered if he had just

come along for a free feed & free booze. Anyway,

my point is that I see a lot of westerners in Bali, ex

    pats & tourists, displaying bad manners & I don't

know if this is part of Bali or if they had the same

bad manners before coming to Bali. For me, I find

bad manners to be totally unacceptable & there is

no excuse to display this kind of behaviour.

    Jim

Dear Jim,I couldn't agree with you more, good manners costnothing! Social etiquette along with good mannersdoes seem to be foreign to some people whilst theyare in Bali. It is always good to remember that it isthe minority not the majority- thankfully! Glad youenjoyed the wedding dear.

The 53-year-old began hisbusiness career with globalmarketing research team ACNielsen. He held management

Since 2010 he has beenchief executive of Appen ButlerHill, a linguistic technologysolutions company, where he willfinish up at the end of January.

Pulver became a nationallyrecognisable figure when hisdaughter had a fake collar bombplaced around her neck in August2011.

Pulver backs his formerShore school mate Hawker insupport of keeping Robbie Deansin the head coach role in 2013.

"Robbie will be coaching theWallabies right through 2013,"Pulver declared.

"And then at that point wewill consider the coachingpositions to take us to the RugbyWorld Cup in 2015."

Little River Band or LRB is an Australian rock band, formed in Melbourne in early 1975.

The band chose its name after passing a road sign leadingto the Victorian township of Little River, near Geelong, on the wayto a performance. Little River Band enjoyed sustained commercialsuccess not only in Australia, but also in the United States. Theyhave sold more than 25 million records and achieved 13 U.S. Top40 hits, besides many music awards gained in Australia.

The band's original members were: lead vocals GlennShorrock, acoustic guitar and vocals Graham Goble, rhythmguitar and vocals Beeb Birtles, lead guitar Ric Formosa, bassguitar Roger McLachlan, and drums Derek Pellicci. Goble was theonly original member born in Australia. The music and lyrics formost of the group's compositions were pr imarily written by Gobleand Shorrock, with contributions from Birtles, Briggs and Pellicci.

In May 2001 the Australasian Performing Right Association(APRA), as part of its 75th Anniversary celebrations, named "CoolChange", written by Shorrock, as one of the Top 30 Australiansongs of all time. The classic line-up of Birtles, Goble, Pellicci,Shorrock, guitarist David Briggs, and bass guitarist GeorgeMcArdle, were inducted into the Australian Recording IndustryAssociation (ARIA) Hall of Fame at the 18th Annual ARIA MusicAwards of 2004.

Early years 1970sIn Australian terms, the original lineup of Little River Band

can be considered a super group. Glenn Shorr ock had been thelead singer of leading Australian 1960s pop band The Twilightsand highly regarded early 1970s country rock band Axiom, alongside Brian Cadd. Beeb Birtles had been the bassist in thepopular 1960s band Zoot (which launched the career of singer-guitarist Rick Springfield), and Goble had led Adelaide folk rockgroup Allison Gros before forming the harmony-country-rock bandMississippi (joined by Birtles and Pellici), which had enjoyed somechart success in Australia and built up a strong following on theconcert and festival circuit; during 1971-72 the or iginal membersalso recorded under the studio band pseudonym Drummond, scoring a national #1 hit with a novelty cover of the song "DaddyCool".

LRB found immediate success in Australia, but individualmembers had greater ambitions. Like other Australian groups ofthe period, both Axiom and Mississippi had tried to break into theUK record market without success. Axiom disbanded after movingto the UK, and Shorrock sang for a short period with the more

progressive rock outfit Esperanto before meeting and joiningforces with Birtles, Goble, and Pellicci in 1974. They agreed tomeet back in their homeland by early 1975. Remembering theindifferent reaction they had received in the UK, they decided theirnew band would focus on establishing themselves in the UnitedStates.

A key factor in their eventual success was a fellowAustralian they had met while in England who became theirmanager, Glenn Wheatley. Wheatley had been the bassist in thehighly-regarded Australian rock band The Masters Apprenticesand his first-hand experiences of the rip-offs in the 1960s music

    25

sc en e ,combinedwith his subsequent experience working in musicmanagement in Britain and the United States in the early1970s, allowed him to help Little River Band become the firstAustralian group to enjoy consistent commercial and chartsuccess in the United States.

Fuelled by a very successful Australian hit single"Curiosity Killed the Cat", the band began making promotionalvisits to the US in September 1976, which resulted in a US hitsingle, "It's a Long Way There" (edited down from the albumtrack, which ran over 8 minutes long). It broke into the US Top30 and galvanized the commitment of the band members.

    It's a Long Way There

Hey everybody yeah, don't you feel that there's something?Feel it, feel it?

Hey everybody yeah, don't you feel that there's something?

People on their own are getting nowhere,I am on the road to see,

If anything is anywhere and waiting, just for me.

Everynight I walk around the city.Seems like I'll never know,That feeling of being together when I go.

    And it's a long way there, it's a long way to where I'm going,And it's a long way there, it's a long way to where I'm going.

Hey everybody, don't you feel that there's something, but you knowIn a moment it is gone.

I live for the day when I can hear people saying that they know andThey care for everyone

But I feel like I've been here for the whole of my life, never knowingHome.

It's a long way. It's a long, long, long way there,

I'm gonna keep on tryin',I'm gonna keep on tryin', yeah,

I'm gonna keep on tryin',I'm gonna keep on tryin', ah!

Been away from home for such a long time,And got to know this town,

But I don't seem to matter much to anyone, who's aroundIs there anybody around?

Everynight I walk around the city,Seems like I'll never know,

The feeling of being together when I go.

    And it's a long way there, it's a long way to where I'm going,And it's a long way there, it's a long way to where I'm going.

Everybody knows it's a long way there,Oh, everybody knows it's a long way there.

Watson said."I know when I'm stringing

games together I've got morechance of being successful.

"The last three times I'vebeen out injured has beenbecause of the same calf.

"A lot of it comes down tothe amount I've been bowling.

Unfortunately my body can'thandle it."Ideally, Watson wants to

return to the top of the order -where he has enjoyed the mostsuccess averaging 44 from 24Tests - despite there being a voidto fill in the middle order with theretirement of Mike Hussey.

Shane Watson hopes to bowlduring the Ashes series laterthis year but for now is keen toresume his 38-Test careerpurely as an opening batsman.

The injury-prone 31-year-oldhas struggled to cope with thebowling workload over thepast 18 months and brokedown with another calfstrain during the BoxingDay Test against SriLanka.

Watson is aiming toreturn for the one-dayseries against West Indiesstarting on February 1, butselectors will face aquandary when they meetto pick the squad for thefour-Test series againstIndia starting later thatmonth.

Wi th the Sydneys ide rconceding his body cannot copewith the rigours of medium-pacebowling, the panel must decidewhether his reco rd of 2481 Test runsat an average of 37.02 can justify hisplace in the top six.

"It's come to a time when Ineed to give my batting a decentcrack to see how good I can be,"

I want to be a Test opener for now: Watson"I do love opening in Test

cricket and all forms of thegame," said Watson.

"Over the last few yearsI've been very comfortable tomove down the order to fit in withthe amount I was bowling and

trying to get the best out

    of myself as an all-rounder.

"And if the teamrequires me to batnumber three or numberfour then I'm very happyto do that.

    " B u t m ypreference definitely isto open."

However, Watsonhas not closed the dooron returning to thebowling crease as earlyas the five-Test Ashes

series in England from July, although not as the all-rounder

the Australian selectors are soeager to include.

"In the perfect world, I'd liketo be able to bowl in the Ashes - ifpicked as a batsman - but for nowI just want to string some gamestogether."

British man who threw bottle at Bolt found guiltyA mentally ill British man whoshouted abuse at Usain Boltand threw a beer bottle on thetrack at the start of the men'sOlympic 100 meters final wasfound guilty of a public orderoffence.

Ashley Gil l-Webb, 34,shouted "Usain I want you to lose,Usain you are bad, you are anarsehole" at the Jamaican sprinterin the minutes before the race onAugust 5 last year, a key momentof the LondonGames.

    A s80,000 fans inthe packedstadium fellsilent and alle y e s w e r efixed on thecompetitors inthe starting

    blocks, Gill-Webb lookedo v e r e a c hshoulder tocheck no onewas looking ath i m , h i db e h i n d ag r o u p o fs p e c t a t o r sand lobbed the bottle at the track,video evidence showed.

"I am sure that he was at thatpoint acting rationally and wronglyand that he intended to causeharassment, alarm or distress tothe competitors, and accordingly,

he is guilty," said judge WilliamAshworth at Stratford Magistrates'Court in east London, a shortdistance from the OlympicStadium.

The court had heard thatGill-Webb, who suffers frombipolar disorder, was in the throesof a manic episode at the time.

The crux of the legal casewas whether, despite his condition,he acted with the intention to cause

    distress to others.Ashworth found Gill-Webb

guilty of a charge of behaving in athreatening and disorderly way"with intent to cause the 100meters finalists harassment, alarm or distress thereby

causing spectators present atthe Olympic Park harassment, alarm or distress".

He will be sentenced at alater date. The maximum penaltyhe could face would be sixmonths in jail and a fine.

Gill-Webb did not have aticket for the 100 meters final buthad somehow made his way toan exclusive seating area wherehe mingled with members of theDutch Olympic team in orangetracksuits.JUDOKA

One of them was judokaEdith Bosch, an Olympic bronzemedallist, who testified earlier inthe case that Gill-Webb'sbehaviour was so disruptive thatshe missed the entire race.

Bosch confronted Gill-Webb after he threw the bottleand blocked him from walkingaway. He was then restrained byOlympic volunteer workers and

arrested.Bolt did not hear the abuse or

see a green plastic beer bottle landbehind the starting line, and wenton to win the race in 9.63 seconds, the second-fastest time recorded.

    At the police station later,

Gill-Webb handed officers a writtenstatement which he signed "AlanCumming", the name of a Scottishactor.

    G i l l - W e b b ' s l a w y e r ,Rhiannon Crimmins, told the courtthat he was not in a fit state at the

time of theseevents to makerational decisionsor consider theconsequences ofhis actions.

"He wouldnot have acted inthis way but forhis illness," she

    s a i d i n h e rclosing speech.She said

that, in his manicframe of mind, hebehaved the wayhe did because itwas making himfeel good and notb e c a u s e h e

wanted to cause alarm to thosearound him.

From his perspective, shesaid, the tirade against Bolt wasmerely "about being a part of it,about taking the contrary view".

    Prosecutor Neil King had

argued that while Gill-Webb'sjudgment may have been impaired,it was not absent.

King argued that he musthave known what he was doingwas wrong if he took pains not to benoticed, as shown by the videoevidence. But Crimmins said that itwas impossible to analyse hisbehaviour as if he had been actingrationally because in fact he hadnot.
