Imagine the following.A Boeing 777-300 operated by

a fictional Bali GatewayAirlines makes an emergencylanding at Bali's Ngurah RaiAirport after flying from KualaLumpur. Prior to its arrivals inBali, the Aviation Security teamat Bali's airport are informed byState Intelligence Officers thata passenger on the aircraft is asuspected terrorist. As the plancrosses into Indonesian air space, the plane's pilot reports smoke in thepassenger cabin emanating fromengine number 1 which is on fire. The pilot then files an urgent requestfor medical assistance to stand by at

Bali's airport as some passengersare unconscious while others aresuffering breathing difficulties.

The troubled inbound flightlines up to land on runway 27, then

overruns the asphalt, crashing and burning near thenorth-south road leading toNusa Dua. On impact, thefuselage of the plane carrying175 passengers splits in two.

The "crash" kills 23 passengerson the spot, injuring another 62,but allowing 90 passengers toescape virtually unharmed.

Among the survivors areseveral terrorist who hijacked

the airplane inbound to Bali. The dramatic sceneswere part of a preparedness drillconducted by the managers ofBali's airport, who, for the sake ofrealism, even created a life-

sized mock-up of anaircraft that was set afire nearairport's runway.

The general manager ofPT Angkasa Pura I, Heru Legowo, who manages the Bali airport, said

    th a t th e n i g h t - t imepreparedness exercisewas needed to evaluate

the ability of personnel, facilities and proceduresto handle and emergencysituation. Hero, describingthe exercise held onWednesday, said: "Thiswas the first time such anexercise was held at night.Accidents can happen atany time, so we must be

ready and prepares to confrontany situation, day or night."

In all, 800 personnel weredeployed during the trainingexercise. The drama, frombeginning to end, lasted only 30-

minutes and did not disrupt normalWednesday night operations atthe busy Bali airport.

Similar preparedness drillsare conducted at least once everytwo years at Bali's airport.

    B a l i ' s S t a r r e d H o t e l sPredicting 90% + OccupancyOver Christmas and NewYears 2010-2011.

Beritabali.com reports thatthe Bali Tourism Office is sayingthat, on the average, 80% of allavailable hotel rooms in Bali havebeen booked for the coming

    Christmas and NewYears period.

Data from the BaliTourism Office puts the averageoccupancy at all Bali hotelsbetween December 20, 2010until January 2011 at 90%. In

many of the more popular areasof Bali - such as Sanur, NusaDua, Kuta and Ubud - hotels arealready reporting they are fullybooked over the 2010-2011Christmas and New Yearsperiod.

The head of the BaliTourism Office (Kadiparda), IdaBagus Subhisku, told the presson Friday, December 17, 2010,that generally Bali remains the

    preferred choice for year-end holidays.

As a popular destination, according to Subhisku, Balicontinues to see many of the moreremote areas of the islandsuffering from a lack of their "fare

share" of tourism visitors. Toaddress this imbalance, he saysthat the regents and municipalmayors of Bali must begin todevelop "stand alone" tourismproducts in order to attract tourismvisitors to their areas. He alsoadmitted that the more remotesections of Bali still suffer from thedistance of their location from themain tourist areas and the lack ofsu p p o r t i n g i n f r a s t r u c tu r edemanded by tourism visitors.

BALI THE RIGHT WAYKuta Weekly News Corner

    4

G'day again all for the second last week of the year, my favourite, Christmas.A fantastic time of year (not just in Bali) full of the festive spirit and a heap ofgreen bottles with good friends. A day to be spent with thoughts of people whohave entered and exited our lives at different stages throughout the year alongwith the memories of people that have been lost and are missed terribly ineach of our lives. A Christmas cheers to you all!!!

Thankfully the best part of my family is still with me so I will enjoy theday in their company and love. Let's see how things pan out after the drinksesky gets about empty and the relaxed nature of the day takes over. In our

mob someone tends to accidentally start a conversation about politics or religion which inadvertently turns into a fullblown debate between the usual stand up family members. I remember one year after a very inebriated Christmas dayafternoon discussion, one brother got thrown in the pool after pushing his point that little too far. Twas a bloody funnyday, with no love lost amongst blood. Life went on as usual.

Anyhow, moving right along last week we reported on a story we picked up from Beritabali bali.com, whichtalked about the standard of tourist that Bali would consider setting up its tourism marketing to target in the future. Thefact that our source is a fantastic point to keep up on current events and trends in Bali, along with the forward thinkingthat the Balinese officialdom have tabled for that purpose, we did get a submission from a reader which is as follows:

I refer to the article "Bali to regulate the pricing of tourismKetut Wija thinks that Bali is being sold cheaply and that food, hotels and transport is too cheap???? How the***** did he come up with this idea?

Quality tourists? What exactly are Quality tourists? Are they the ones who come to Bali and stay at(already) expensive hotels on the beach front, which is already becoming an Ibiza look a alike? The ones whocomplain about not being able to have a view of the ocean from their hotel resulting i n a mass cutting back oftrees? The ones who complain about the beach boys going about their business...giving a great localatmosphere to the beach?

The ones who come to Bali with their western so called architecture which does not blend in with localBalinese architecture resulting in disgusting pieces of glass and concrete and certainly not adhering to the

required 30% Balinese architecture? I cannot for the life of me understand why Bali has been allowed to bedemonised to the whim of the western developer......surely tourists who come here do so to get away from allthe western crap and live in a beautiful Balinese atmosphere....I have a horrible feeling that $$$$$$$$$$ istaking a big part in this.

In my years of coming to Bali and recently moved here I am horrified at the way Bali has been allowedto be destroyed architecturally and I hope one day the government will see what is happening and hopefully dosomething about it.

Please, keep Bali Balinese...no more Aussie sports bars and no more western development, enough isenough. Thank you for allowing me to air my view. Sincerely, A Bali Lover.

So there ya have it, thanks for your submission, with such big words like, Horrified and Demonised it's awonder you have decided to move up here?? I appreciate that your view is your view, however I think raising the bar onBali is a sensational idea. Let the Balinese do it the way they think I say, after all, it is their island. I think it's a greatplace to holiday or live and always will be, and if they want to lift the standard, then, DO IT.

Alright Punters I could ramble on for hours about differing views and as much as I would love to, I have otherpressing issues to consider like the blood level in my alcohol system, which needs topping up shortly. I sincerely hopeyou all have a great great Christmas day, with lots of pressies and food with good friends. Lastly I won't end with aquote, I have decided to offer a turkey joke for Christmas, I hope you all read between the lines.

A turkey was chatting with a bull. " I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree," sigh ed the

turkey, "but I haven't got the energy." " Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings? " replied the bull."They're packed with nutrients."

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach thelowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally

after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly spottedby a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.

So Punters the Moral of the story is Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there. StaySafe and Enjoy your Christmas,

    ALIASJ

    Gday again

Obviously being a fat Santais very important; no-onetrusts a skinny Santa, sohaving appropriate paddingis vital

From being peed on byscreaming kids to heatwaves andcranky old men, it can be toughout there on the front line for ashopping centre Santa Claus.

Depending on who youask, playing the role of Santa

could be either heaven or hell. But for those men behindthe beards posing for photos eachfestive season, while the rest of usare darting in and out of storesdoing last-minute Christmasshopping, the job definitely keepsthem on their toes.

Daniel Tusia, who hasbeen playing Santa for about fouryears, says even adults can havesome bizarre reactions when theysee the jolly fat man in a red suit.

    " I ' v e a l w a y s b e e nshocked by the power that Santahas; he seems to evoke very

interesting behaviour, even fromadults," he said."A few years ago I was

driving back from a Santa gig in ared convertible with the roof downand my sunnies on, but stilldressed as Santa, and this guynearly ran me off the road tootingand honking and yelling 'Santa!Santa!'.

"He went to overtake meon the wrong side of the road andjust completely forgot that he was

    driving."Mr Tusia plays a number

of different characters, but hesays there is a lot moreresponsibility involved whendonning the fat suit and whitebeard.

"I do find the role of Santato be a very sacred one, unlikeany other role," he said.

"Any good Santa wouldknow that you have a greatresponsibility playing that role andalong with that comes certain dosand don'ts that you have torespect if you're going to treat itprofessionally.

"For example never itchunder your beard or remove it inpublic and when you get changedbe very careful not to let anyonesee you; things like that are reallyimportant.

"Anyone can be watchingyou at any time, whether you're

going to a gig or going home."Obviously being a fat

Santa is very important; no-onetrusts a skinny Santa, so havingappropriate padding is vital."

Mr Tusia loves howrewarding the role can be andsays he is treated like a "rock star"when all dressed up.

Although he says thereare a few hazards that comealong with the job when youinteract with thousands ofchildren each festive season.

"Number one on the list isbeing peed on by either a child, or

when people want a picture withtheir lovely pet," he said.

"When it comes to actualconversations when doing thegig, it's important to be jolly andbig, but you need to rememberthat for two or three-year-old kids,a large man with a beard is veryimposing.

"It's a very big and boldcharacter, particularly if you havea bell and are making lots of rified

noise, so you need to besensitive to the fact that kids canbe absolutely petrified whileeveryone around is telling them tolove him. It can be pretty scary.

"The other thing is, I canremember a gig I did a couple ofyears ago ... it was one of those45-degree days during an

amazing heatwave in Melbourneand Santa's booked outside. Idon't think people appreciate thatyou're wearing a fat suit thatdoesn't breathe, plus heavy andthick Santa clothes with fur on thesleeves and cuffs.

"Then you've got to put ona wig and beard which traps theheat. Plus, the icing on the cake isthe hat which is again fur andheavy. So basically you'recooking inside."

Mr Tusia, who himself isJewish, says it can be easy toforget that not everyone in

Australia actually celebratesChristmas. He has also comeacross quite a few Christmasscrooges during his days asSanta.

"There are a lot of 'Bah,humbugs' around, let me tell you. It's quite sad actually; I thinksomewhere along the line theyforget to have some fun," he said.

"It could be anyone andthat's the sad thing. These daysyou can see a 10-year-old saying'I know it's not real' but that's reallynot the point. Whether you'replaying Santa or an elf, you're

there to bring joy and theChristmas spirit."There was one very

grumpy man who the other day just went 'go away!' and I wasshocked at that. But then I mightspeak to another old man who'sinto it and we have a greatconversation about the NorthPole. There are all types in thisworld.

Man sues police for US$400,000 after theymistook his cigarette break for a suicideattempt.

A PAIR of blundering police officers mistooka lawyer's cigarette break on his window ledge for asuicide attempt.

Manhattan man Mark Moody sued the city

and the police officers for $400,000 in damagesearlier this month after he was wrestled to the floorof his apartment, handcuffed and taken byambulance to a downtown psychiatric ward, TheNew York Post reported today, citing evidence in alawsuit.

The 40-year-old trial lawyer said he was satout enjoying his regular nicotine hit on the sill of hissecond-floor apartment window, a scant 3.5m offthe ground, on a hot August day when a police car

    23 Dec - 29 Dec 2010 (213)

arrived and two police officers jumped out."Are you about to commit suicide?" one

officer asked."If I was going to commit suicide, this would

be a pretty dumb place to do it," the smoker replied, adding. "If I jumped from here, I'd just sprain myankle."

But the officers, who never said whatprompted their concern, insisted Mr Moody comedownstairs.

The lawyer refused, explaining he was sittingon the sill so he wouldn't get smoke in the apartment, and hailed a cabby friend over to vouch that thewindow was his regular smoking spot. But threeambulances and four other patrol cars pulled upbefore the cabby could move.

Mr Moody said that before he knew it, a beefyofficer was inside his apartment, lifting him out of hisown living-room window from behind. The lawyerwas then shifted into an ambulance and taken to theBeth Israel Medical Centre.

But Mr Moody said the on-duty psychiatristapologised before quickly discharging him.

"I talked to him for three minutes, and hesaid, 'Look, I'm really sorry. I apologise on behalf ofthe city,'" Mr Moody recalled.

    NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said, "Policeresponded to a 911 call of an emotionally disturbedperson at the location. What the Hail?An Ice Storm of Hail Hits BaliDuring a Mid-December Spate ofE x t r e m e W e a t h e r .

Any remaining doubts that globalclimate change is well and truly upon us,should be swept away by news that sectionsof Bali's capital city of Denpasar were hit by ahail storm on Thursday afternoon, December16, 2010.

Heavy rains affected Denpasar andsurrounding area beginning at around 3:30pm, including confirmed reports ofexceedingly rare ice storms that befell theJalan Gunung Agung and Jalan Merpatiareas of the city. According the Kompas.comand Radar Bali, the sound of ice pelletsbouncing off buildings and parked vehiclescreated something of a panic, causingpeople to seek cover in their homes and

places of business. One observer told thepress that the ice crystals measure 1 x 1centimeter, with other comparing the size ofthe ice crystals to a human thumb.

Some residents reported cracked carwindshields and limited damage toresidential roofs as the result of thehailstorm, which lasted for around 10-20minutes. Trees also tumbled on somestreets, bringing down power lines andcausing interruption in electrical service.

    HOROSCOPE PREDICTION 23 Dec - 29 Dec 2010

March 20 - April 19You're not usually secretive about your emotions or yourdesires. And you haven't been lately. But because youhaven't been able to discuss these issues all at once, those

who matter won't necessarily fully understand what yourpriorities are or why. Tell them now, detailing your feelingsand objectives point by point.

April 20 - May 20Some say that minor disagreements are best tactfullyignored. Most of the time, that might be true. At the moment,

however, they could be the tip of the iceberg, and it's notuntil you begin asking questions that you realise just howdeep and potentially serious certain unspoken problems

    could be.

May 21 - June 20The recent encounter between your ruler Mercury andPluto may have been somewhat brutal, if only because itforced you to reveal sensitive facts you'd rather not have

discussed, at least at the time. In retrospect, however, you'rebeginning to recognise how much easier things are now thatthey're out in the open.

June 21 - July 21For ages you've been struggling against potentiallydisruptive changes. However, the eclipsed Full Moon, thisweek, may give you no choice but to conduct a major

reorganisation in elements of your routine or daily life.Unwelcome as this seems, you'll soon realise it's exactlywhat you've been needing.

    July 22 - Aug 22There's a very real difference between a dispute that's based

solely on your feelings versus those of another. In such casesyou're better off simply agreeing to disagree. But when itcomes to practical matters, there are facts you can lookinto

and, having done so, then decide who's right before for youaccuse others.

Aug 23 - Sep 22Living with Mercury being retrograde demands that youbalance an acute awareness of plans and how arrangementsshould be with a willingness to be easygoing about

problems. Otherwise you'd spend all your time wonderingwhat might go wrong. Avoid errors where you can, andwhen you can't, refuse to worry.

Sep 23 - Oct 22In some cases diplomacy can involve sugar-coating thetruth so it's palatable to those who can't, or won't, facedifficult facts. However, judging by tense aspects to both

Jupiter and Uranus, the current situation involves avoidinga discussion of changes you'd rather not make, while stillpretending you're doing it for others.

Oct 23 - Nov 22The last thing you want to do is make serious alterations inelements of your life you've only just managed to put inorder. But judging by eclipses this weekand early in the newyear, the actual situations you're dealing with are changing,

and you'll just have to change with them.

Nov 22 - 20 DecMercury went retrograde a week ago. However, it's now

moved into your sign, where it will remain in reversemoment until December 30. Disruptive as much of theresulting confusion may be, invest time in seeking out its

source and you'll learn a great deal and solve more than afew mysteries.

Dec 21 - Jan 19Breakthroughs come in all sorts of ways. At the moment, however, what begins as an extremely inconvenient

situation is likely to turn into a remarkably informativeexperience. Still, if you're to make the best of it, you'll need

to delve into certain details. And you might find these aren'teasy to face.

Jan 20 - Feb 17Having dealt with people who are overly precise, and for noreason, you've promised yourself you'd never be as uptight

about details. However, the complex and delicatecircumstances you're dealing with leave you little option.Simply explain what's necessary and why. The clearer you

are, the more cooperative others will be about yourdemands.

Feb 18 - March 19If you're already feeling the disruptive mood triggered bythe eclipsed Full Moon,, that's no surprise. The combinationof sudden developments and the facts and feelings this

brings to the surface will be as helpful in the long run as theyare unsettling in the short term.

Bali's 10 best dive si tes

Diving in BaliWant to plunge into the deep

blue and get your mind blown by Bali'sunderwater wildlife? Head right thisway.Bali's dive sites offer great diversity:vert ical wal ls and sand slopes, shipwrecks, limestone shorelines andblack, volcanic outcrops, peacefulbays and ripping currents, coral-covered ridges, with both shore- andboat-diving. Expect to see mantas, whale sharks and, from July through

October, oceanic sunfish.Diving safaris are becoming the

package of choice for those who want tosee more of underwater Bali. These arebasically hotel/diving and transportpackages. Because you're staying nearthe dive sites, you can do earlier and l aterdives and avoid the day-tripping crowdsfrom the tourist areas that pack outpopular sites. It also allows you to domore dives each day. Snorkelling isavailable at Tulamben, Amed, PadangBai and Pemuteran/Menjangan, so non-diving partners and children can often joinday trips and safaris. Here are Bali's 10best:1. USAT Liber ty

The Liberty shipwreck isconsidered Bali's most popular dive site. The American ship USAT Liberty was anarmed cargo steamship that wastorpedoed by the Japanese in 1942. Theyears under the sea have transformed itto one of Indonesia's most beautifulartificial reefs. Stunning gorgonian seafans, huge soft coral trees and bi g-barrelsponges all flourish here. A residentschool of big-eyed jacks live on andaround the ship and are unafraid ofdivers, so it's safe to enter the school andhave them whirl around you. The ship isalso a haven for emperors, batfish, sweetlips and parrotfish.

    2. Tu l am ben d rop-o f fOn the northeast coast,

Tulamben Bay receives very plankton-rich waters and, coupled with the factthat the three main dive sites providetotally different physical environments, the bay is a stunning and diverse

underwater ecosystem. The black sandin the area brings out the colours of thecorals, gorgonians, fish and othermarine life. At the south end of the bay, arocky point falls off sharply underwaterto create a deep drop-off where sharks, whale sharks and sunfish have beenfound.3. Amed

Amed lies to the south, alongthe eastern coastline. It was traditionallydependent on salt-panning and fishing, and despite the arrival of tourists it'sretained that feeling. There are threemain dive sites here; head south to theshipwreck at Lipah fishing village, or a bitfurther south to the drift dive at GiliSelang, Bali's easternmost point.4. L i pah sh i pwreck

This village is tiny and so is thewreck, which can be found at the innerbay drop-off at the north end of LipahBay. Divers can take a boat down thecoast, or just drive along the windingcoast and walk in. It's full of coppersweepers, a batfish school, hard coralgrowth and waving sea fans, and can beboth dived or snorkelled. Go with a goodguide, as the currents can come up fastand strong.5. Gi l i Tepekong

This big volcanic hump risesout of the water not far from the CandiDasa shore on the south-east coast.Underwater, the area is covered withMedusa-like heads that vary in size fromhuge boulders to small sea gardens.

They are adorned with blood-red seafans, tunicates and sponges. In somespots, the competition for space amidthe corals is incredible. Other sitesinclude Gili Mimpang and Gili Biaha.Currents are common in this area, butthat means pelagic life like big tuna,

jacks, sharks and even mola mola comein here.6. Blue La goon

The shallow reefs of BlueLagoon, near Padang Bai, are used forintroductory dives, night dives and longphoto excursions. Staghorn coral patch

reefs start in only 3m ofwater. The reef then opens out onto anarea with huge coral bommies, softleather corals and flowing anemones. The area here can be good for macrobuffs; there are rumours of a laceyscorpionfish being seen here as well.

    7. Napoleon ReefNamed for a large Napoleon

wrasse seen here, Napoleon Reef isin the north near Pemuteran. It can bedived deep or shallow, day or night. On the northeast end is the IkanWarung fish house, bustling withvarious schools. Golden sea fans andlarge clumps of cotton-candy coralgrow beside other gorgonians alongthe slope.8. Menj angen Is landThe drop-offs at Menjangan Islandcan be a real treat. This is the site of anow abandoned guard post that has abroad channel leading to the beach.Expect to be greeted by batfish. Thedive offers spectacular corals andmany deep crevices and fissures, aswell as small caves. Sleepinggroupers and wary big-eyed jacks arefound in the dark recesses.9. Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay, on Nusa Penida,is protected and relatively shallow, offering enjoyable conditions fordivers of all levels. The bay has twoentrances and a large rock sits in thecentre. Be careful when diving thiscentral rock, or along the outside edgeof the bay, as the current can bestrong, sweeping divers out along theoutside wall into very tricky divingconditions. When near the drop-off,look for larger creatures, such asmolas, eagle rays, dogtooth tuna, sharks and an occasional bumphead

wrasse. Schooling surgeonfish areabundant in some spots.10. Mant a Point

Lucky divers may have aclose encounter with the manta raysthat are known to traverse this divesite. One of the mantas is pure white,a truly unearthly creature. Manta Pointis located along the high and ruggedcliffs of Nusa Penida, so it's not alwayseasy to get there due to the big swellsthat sometimes hit, but it's worth it toexperience these gentle, gracefulcreatures.

Dragons to stick with winning formulaStaying tr ue ... Matt Cooperand his Dragons team-mates celebrate a t ryduring the 2010 season

The monkey is off the back, but the shackles which defined StGeorge Illawarra's long-awaitedrun to the NRL premiership is tostay firmly in place for its titledefence.

Former Test centre MattCooper says the Dragons will stickto what helped end a 31-year titledrought in 2010, with the 80-minute grind which has been their

calling cardduring coach WayneBennett's amazinglysuccessful first twoyears at the helm toremain at the heart oftheir gameplan.

    The Dragonsbecame the masters

    of wearing downopposition sides witha m i x t u r e o frelentless defencea n d m e t h o d i c a lattack, with many of their blow-out wins coming with anavalanche of points late inmatches when their rivals simplycould not keep up.

From the outside lookingin, the risk-free approach to theirattack was seemingly a result ofthe desperation to finally silencethe knockers, but even with apremiership in the bag Coopersays the Dragons will maintaintheir disciplined approach.

"I don't know about that,"Cooper said when asked aboutthe possibi l i ty of a moreexpansive game in 2011.

"We've shown what worksthe last two years. We'd have tosee what Wayne's plans are in thenew year but at the moment we'rejust concentrating on getting ourbodies right, getting our mindsright - the footy stuff will kick-in inthe new year."

    C o o p e r a n d t h eremainder of his Dragons team-mates are already in the thick of

preseason training, with trainerJeremy Hickmans showing nosign of taking it easy on the squadin the wake of their grand finaltriumph.

But unl ike previouscampaigns, Cooper says goodvibes around the club have madethe intense fitness sessionseasier to take.

"Usually you come backto preseason dreading the

enough, but this year Iwas keen to get back just to seeall the boys and reminisce aboutthe grand final," Cooper said.

"The monkey's off ourback and you just felt that relief assoon as that siren went in thegrand final.

"Everyone's in really goodspirits, that pressure's been liftedoff for a couple of months, but I'msure once we get back to playingagain we'll be favourites and we'll

have to get back to the standardthat we've put on the paddock thelast two seasons."

    The biggest questionsurrounding the Dragons' 2011p r e p a r a t i o ns r e m a i n sunanswered, with Bennett yet todecide on his future beyond nextyear - the last of his three-yeardeal with the club.

    T h e N R L ' s m o s tsuccessful coach said he willlikely come to a decision over theo f f - se a so n , w i th Co o p e radmitting the players are nonethe wiser as to Bennett's plans.

"Obviously Wayne hasn'tmade up his mind what he wantsto do, it's a decision that will comehopefully before the seasonstarts," Cooper said.

"Obviously for the cluband the players and thesupporters we'd love to have himhere as long as we could, butthat's his decision.

"The birth of the puppieswas very special. All puppieswere born na tura l ly , nocaesarean was necessary," sheadded. It took Etana a full 26

hours to give birth to all of thepuppies - and Ms Wegemann

was as baffled as amazed. But caring for 17 puppies

turned out to be a full-time job: MsWegemann put her work as anindependent animal psychiatriston a hold and her husband took asmuch holidays as he could.

Their lives have beenturned upside down by the

puppies, and their living room isnow occupied by a giant box thathouses the puppies.

But even Ms Wegemannstill struggles to recognise them:The females puppies are calledBahati, Binta, Bahya, Bashima,Batouuli, Binki, Bora, Bisa and themale ones are Baakir, Banjoku,Belay, Bruk, Bundu, Bayo,Bukekayo, Biton and Bulus.

Ms Wegemann gave themall African names because theRhodesian Ridgeback is anAfrican hunting dog.

    M e l b o u r n e c h i e fexecutive Ron Gauci saysthe Storm is emergingf rom the sa lary capdebacle in better shapethan he expected.

Doomsayers predicted thedemise of the Storm after it wasrevealed in April the club had beensystematically rorting the salarycap between 2006 and 2010 tothe tune of more than $3 million.

    They were stripped of twopremierships, all 2010 points andheavily fined, while two majors p o n s o r s a m o n g o t h e r simmediately cut ties.

There was a mass exodusof players as the club moved toget under the salary cap, althoughthey were able to retain all but oneof their "fab four" star players, withonly Greg Inglis moving on.

Gauci took over in Julyafter the sacking of disgracedMatt Hanson, who had alreadyreplaced so-called "chief rat"Brian Waldron.

    He says the future looksbright.

"The general perceptionfrom the outside was that the clubwas doomed, the playing rosterwas going to be decimated, and in

fact there were thosecalling for the end of theMelbourne Storm, if not rugbyleague in Victoria," Gauci said.

"If you look at theposition we're now in today, that's a far cry removed fromwhere people thought ormaybe even hoped we'd be.

"It's fair to say whilst wetook a bit of a knock in April thereality is that the way that theplayers performed since andthe way that the club hasresponded since if anythinghas earned a great deal ofrespect.

"I think the responsehas been better than Ianticipated."

Despite the woodenspoon status, the Stormfinished the season with a 14-10 win-loss record, which waslevel with the fifth-placedWarriors.

Gauci believes thiscourage and commitment iskey to their revival in 2011.

"They came out and puttheir bodies on the line and Ithink the fact that they won asmany games this year as theydid last year is a real credit tothe players and the coach and

    the football operationsdepartment," he said.

    " I t was ve ry , ve ryimpressive."

    G a u c i s a y s 2 0 1 0membership and crowds actuallytopped the previous season andhe expects a further rise nextyear, while the club was in

    discussions with a number ofsponsors.

The NRL is still to finaliseits report on the investigation intothe cheating, however there is nofurther action pending againstthe Storm.

An investigation by theVictoria Police Fraud Squad isdeemed to be "ongoing".

Gauci feels the Storm hasalready moved on.

"The feeling is really quitepositive, we've injected somenew players and new coaches

and dynamics has been reallyquite positive," he said."I've been encouraged by

the mood in the place, mostpeople have commented thatthere's that extra skip ineveryone's step.

But the league's hardballstance may rekindle the Eels'interest, particularly now theyhave cash to burn following thedepartures of big-money three-quarters Timana Tahu and EricGrothe Junior.

The Rabbitohs, though, have vowed to continue pursuingthe game's number one centre.

"The Rabbitohs will doeverything they can to keep GregInglis in rugby league," the clubsaid in a statement.

"He is one of the game'smost highly valued players andwe have assured him of that in nouncertain terms.

"That said, the cap has toapply fairly to all clubs and oneclub cannot be allowed to do whatothers were prevented fromdoing.
