Raising aspirations and effecting change Our goal is to promote effective school governance and leadership. Our model includes training and on-site support for HTs and SMDCs on leadership, school planning and management. SMDC capacity is developed on mobilising resources for their schools, parental engagement to promote student participation and dropout prevention. Our work with HTs prepares them to lead and manage their schools effectively. The Udbhav programme promotes the professional development of teachers in Science, English and Mathematics to improve classroom practice. We produce high quality interactive teaching and learning modules and teachers deliver them through student-centred, practical and creative classroom sessions. District Resource Group (DRG) members visit schools to coach teachers. Quality circles provide opportunities for peer learning to share good practice and innovative teaching methods. Our goal is for all young people to achieve their potential. We raise young people’s aspirations to complete their education and secure employment. Our work includes scholarships for motivated students from disadvantaged backgrounds, preparing students for secondary education and developing interactive educational resources. The Kusuma Excellence Fellowship (KEF) offers 200 scholarships each year to students from disadvantaged backgrounds in Sambalpur and Hardoi to complete secondary school and pursue higher education. The Fellowship includes a stipend, mentoring support, English and computer training, life skills development and career guidance. Each Fellow is supported with mentoring sessions to develop an individual plan of action that includes academic and personal development goals. KEF has supported 887 Fellows to pursue their education. Many students are not adequately prepared for secondary school and have not achieved the required learning level. Our Secondary School Readiness Programme (SSRP) delivers accelerated learning to students in classes 9 and 10 to address learning gaps in Mathematics, English, Science, Hindi, Odia and Social Sciences. The programme includes a study camp at the beginning and end of the academic year and a period of supported-learning during the school term. Teachers deliver tailored classroom sessions based on each student’s learning level. Students are assessed at the beginning and end of each year to track their progress. Students are provided with subject-specific high quality learning materials and facilities such as Science and computer laboratories and libraries to enhance learning. We implement SSRP intensively in 50 schools and partner with UP State government to deliver the programme to 52 additional schools reaching over 5,200 students in five Districts. The SSRP material developed by Kusuma for Hindi and Mathematics is being used statewide by UPMSA. Kusuma Resource Centres (KRCs) in Hardoi and Sambalpur offer a wide range of educational resources for students, teachers and community members. In addition to the two KRCs in the district headquarters, we have established five Kusuma Satellite Resource Centres (KSRCs) in schools in both districts to support remote communities. For students, KRCs offer book lending services, audio-visual materials and computers with internet access. Students participate in English communication, basic computer and creative writing courses, book and movie clubs, competitions, Science and Mathematics Olympiads, career guidance and life skills sessions. For teachers and HTs, KRCs provide training on library management, academic leadership, school planning and management, and offer peer-learning opportunities. For the community, they provide a safe place for their children to learn outside school, host career and education fairs for students and their parents. We funded the construction of a Mid-Day Meal kitchen and a feeding programme for up to 100,000 students each school day in Odisha. The kitchen provides meals in schools to boost attendance and improve nutrition among children, especially in poor areas. The kitchen was built in partnership with The Akshaya Patra Foundation and feeds up to 65,000 meals per school day. The Kusuma Fellowship enabled me to afford higher education. I have completed Bachelor’s in Technology and now I am a trainee Software Engineer. In addition to the financial support, I value the skills I have learnt in English and Computers. I am inspired to look for ways to support other needy students.

Mr. Siddhant Sahu, Fellow, KEF, Sambalpur

Kusuma’s partnership with UPMSA strengthens the quality of secondary education in Uttar Pradesh. The support includes improving the capacity of SMDCs in contributing towards school improvement and professional development for government teachers to bridge learning gaps among Class 9 students. These collaborative interventions will help to test promising models at scale and build state level capacities to initiate state wide improvements in quality of education.

Mr. V.K. Pandey, Joint Director, Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (UPMSA)

The Mid-Day meal programme encourages attendance at school, provides a nourishing meal and enables children to concentrate better in class. We are delighted to support such a large scale programme that makes a real difference to so many children.

Dr Balwant Singh, Chief Executive, Kusuma Trust UK

Student attainment and teaching practiceFollowing a baseline assessment in 2014 of the Udbhav programme, an annual assessment of student learning and teaching practice is conducted in 50 government schools in the Kusuma Schools Partnership Initiative (KSPI) and 50 comparison schools. http://www.kusumatrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Udbhav-Baseline-Evaluation.pdf

FellowshipsIn 2015, the London School of Economics commenced a longitudinal evaluation of Kusuma Excellence Fellowship programmes in Hardoi and Sambalpur. The evaluation assesses the impact on student attainment, educational trajectories, aspirations for the future and employment. http://www.kusumatrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Kusuma-Ratna-Fellowship-Programme.pdf
