HIGHLIGHTS

Germany’s largest island is actually an archipelago, with a mainland, peninsulas and several islets. It’s no wonder
Rügen is considered Germany’s most beautiful island: with
gleaming chalk cliffs looking out across the blue Baltic. Pine-
fringed beaches vie with esplanades on which glamorous white
villas are strung like pearls. Grand avenues lead down to
enchanting lakes and dense stands of beechwood. The “white
city” of Putbus will surprise you with its classic architecture,
parks and squares. Beside it is the island of Hiddensee,
Rügen’s quiet, unspoilt sibling. The natural setting and light
here conjure up a fresh summery mood that recalls one’s
childhood summer holidays. Flowering meadows in spring,
golden forests in autumn and frost-encrusted beaches in
winter – the island group has its own particular charms at
any time of the year. Rügen simply has more to offer.
INSIDER TIPS
If you would like to see and experience more of Rügen, ask ourknowledgeable guest relations staff at the Travel Charme KurhausBinz for some tips. And try these:
The sea at SassnitzThis town is hardly glamorous. But Sassnitz has a harbour andEurope’s longest jetty. You can wander around the port or take atrip out in a fishing boat and see the chalk cliffs from the sea. Or treat yourself to a tasty seafood sandwich.
Sunset at LohmeFrom the old fishing village of Lohme you can enjoy the sunset overKap Arkona. Lohme also has a small harbour. And if you clamberdown the steps you might run into local stonemason and jewellerPeter Müller and get a sense of Rügen’s history among the rocks.
Cycling on MönchgutNowhere else in Rügen can you see so many of the typical thatchedcottages in one place as in the picturesque villages of the Mönchgutpeninsula. The flat terrain is ideal for cycling and a perfect place toaim for is Kliesows Reuse, a pub in the village of Alt Reddevitz, where hosts Heidi and Thomas Kliesow quench the thirst of visitingcyclists with their own home brewed beer.
Step back in time on VilmWhat would the world look like without the impact of human beings? You can get some idea on the 230-acre island of Vilm. The last timetrees were felled here in any numbers was 1527 and since then virtually everything has been left to grow wild. Only 30 people are allowed to visit the uninhabited island each day and a ranger gives a three-hour guided tour.
Full of surprises – the islandsfor all seasons.

Pure enjoyment – Rügen’s unspoilt natural environment
BINZER ESPLANADETake a stroll here to really get a taste of Rügen: an esplanadewith the most attractive seaside resort architecture, the landingstage and the Kurhaus Binz.
JAGDSCHLOSS GRANITZWhat would Rügen be without its very own prince? Malte von Putbus had a hunting lodge (Jagdschloss Granitz) built in 1837, a favourite spot to walk to from the Travel CharmeKurhaus Binz.
THE CHALK CLIFFSCaspar David Friedrich made them world famous: the whitecliffs of Stubnitz along with the blue Baltic and green beech -wood forests make a perfect picture.
HIDDENSEE ISLANDScenic beauty that’s good for the soul. Sunsets on wind-swept beaches, fresh buckthorn in the autumn: it’s no wonder Einstein or Gerhart Hauptmann loved this spot.
KAP ARKONAThe northernmost and often stormiest tip of the island withits two famous lighthouses. On a clear day you can see theDanish island of Møn.
Time travel at the Kurhaus Binz. Get a sense of what
life was like in the glamorous 20s and enjoy all mod cons
while finding out more about the seaside resort of Binz and
its history.
Binz experienced its first boom around 1900 when Berlin’s
bankers invested in an upgrade of the resort. Apart from the
landmark Kurhaus, an increasing number of white summer
villas were built in the “Sorrento of the North” with ornately
decorated balconies, verandas and porches. This “resort
architecture” made Binz famous. In the 1920s industrialists,
doctors, lawyers, government officials and artists streamed
into Binz. They mixed at fabulous gala evenings in the

Kurhaus-Saal or were there to see and be seen on the espla-
nade – “Binz’s balcony”. After the Second World War the
Kurhaus and villas were initially used as convalescent homes
but were still conserved. The opportunity to revive the traditi-
on of the stylish seaside resort came after 1990, when Travel
Charme reopened the Kurhaus Binz – looking as beautiful
as ever.
Today the hotel once again takes pride of place on the espla-
nade. It recalls a stylish age and has revived an almost for-
gotten culture of holidaymaking. It provides luxury accommo-
dation on the Baltic with the traditions of the roaring 20s
and all the amenities of the 21st century.

1908The new Kurhaus is officially inaugurated in thestyle we know today.
1925The Kurhaus becomes the place to meet with itscabaret, casino and the Kakadu Bar.
1950The Kurhaus serves as a convalescent home forvarious East German government institutions.
2001Completely restored, modernised and extended withthe newly built Kaiserhof, the Kurhaus Binz is reope-ned as a Travel Charme Hotel.
Seaside resort architecture – a brief introduction
Oh I do like to be beside the seaside … The term Bäderarchitektur isone you often hear in this area. It means “seaside resort architec-ture” and the best preserved examples of it along the whole Balticcoast are to be found in Binz. A whole series of historic buildingsare strung like pearls along Prorer Wieck. If you are familiar withthe subtle attractions of these wonderful buildings, you can enjoythe beauty of Binz’s esplanade even more on your next stroll. Accor-ding to art historians, seaside resort architecture is not a style inits own right. The term actually applies to the period in which itarose and the function of these fine buildings. They include every-thing built between 1880 and 1914 for holidaymakers seekingrecreation in what were then the new seaside resorts. Today, thesegorgeous white buildings look as if they were all cast from thesame mould, but if you look closer you’ll notice many of the styleshark back to classical architecture in a way that was fashionable atthe time: porches reminiscent of ancient temples, pillars alongsideGothic windows, art nouveau decorations (Haus Möwe) as well ashints of the baroque and renaissance. Binz even has some Alpinetouches (the “Swiss houses”) and Nordic style log cabins. Everyhouse is different.
Despite this, they also have lots in common. First of all, there isthe radiant whiteness: elegant, bright and Mediterranean, while itseffects are emphasised by the blue water, the sky and the gleamingbeach. Then there is the interior décor of the houses, which is lightand playful, due to the material used. On Rügen builders tended to use finely crafted wood or metal for decorative elements and balconies, whereas by comparison balconies and porches on Use-dom are almost all made from solid materials and look heavier. Incontrast, the wooden elements used in Binz sparkle in the sunlightlike tatted lace; they often include the fretwork designs of boatbuilders, who whiled away the long winters by whittling and chisel-ling. In addition, everything faces the sea and the esplanade – eventhe loggias, balconies, porches and patios that are also characte-ristic of this style of architecture. Why is this? The answer is that forthe first time it was possible to recreate the yearnings people had inthose days for the warm south and their attachment to nature, theair, light, sunshine and the sea in the form of buildings. And it isjust one reason we still love this architecture today.

04A room with a view: the maisonettesuites in the towers.
05Traditional window designs like in theold days: a double room in the historicwing of the building.
06Individual, elegant, generously propor-tioned rooms you’ll feel at home in.
07A balcony overlooking the sea: the dou-ble rooms in the Kaiserhof on the sea-front.
All hotel rooms have stories to tell. Of love and
passion, of celebrities and stars. But our rooms are the
soul of discretion and have quite different stars them-
selves.
However, one thing our 137 rooms, suites and resi-
dences have in common is plenty of room for comfort
and indulgence. Fine woods such as whitewashed oak
exude comfort. The use of blue and yellow adds a
touch of sea and sunshine to the interior. The finest
furnishings, materials and accessories create a harmo-
nious atmosphere, in which relaxation and enjoyment
are writ large.
Now for the special features. The tower suites do not
only provide a view in all directions, but a sense of the
sublime. Many suites have a direct view of the Baltic,
which glistens as it greets you in the morning. On the
balconies of rooms facing inland you can savour the
enjoyable day’s holiday you have just spent at sunset,
which is only visible from there. If you wish, you can
book a suite with its own romantic whirlpool for two.
Or you might choose a balcony overlooking the sea and
have breakfast served to you in the morning.
There’s plenty of room for wonderful experiences and
stories. And they’re the ones you’ll want to tell your-
self.

Hello Mr Behrmann, what’s that you’re eating? This Rügen goat’s cream cheese is just wonderful. You should tryit…
Does Rügen make you happy?Well, you can see it does, can’t you! And, as a chef, of course I’mhappy. Because there are so many delicious fresh products herethat I can guarantee our guests will always enjoy the best qualitycuisine.
Do you prefer to serve regional dishes?Let me put it this way: we use first class regional products to com-pose a symphony of European and Asian food. The meat fromSchwarzkopf-Texel lambs, which have grazed on Rügen’s salt pastu-res, goes exceptionally well with curry, for example. It’s not an out-landish mix but adds a touch of something new to familiar flavours. And we only use things that are a good combination. Bear’s garlicpesto from the island goes extremely well with Mediterranean dis-hes. We aim to provide the very best international cuisine we can.
Where do you shop for produce? We order regional meat specialities from Rügen’s bio-farm Bisdamitz. And there are a few other top suppliers. For example, the Petersfamily in Polchow, a very small local village at the Jasmunder Bodden. They have been fishermen since 1888. Once you’ve tasted the wildsalmon Peters and his son catch in the Baltic, you’d never go backto farmed salmon. They also land garfish in late May and early June,a delicious fish with green bones. Not forgetting the local pikeperch, cod and herring…
Go on, admit it, a gourmet like you enjoys snacking too …I’d miss out on a lot if I didn’t. We have two pastry chefs who bakethe finest cakes and tarts fresh every day. All I have to say is theKurhaus-Torte is wonderful…
Mr. Behrmann, thank you for talking to us.
