PEACE BE WITH YOU

Respected and dear brother - priests, religious and laity,

The Masai tribes of Kenya, Africa, are cattle raisers. They roamfrom place to place with their herds. Whenever a priest visitsthem on his pastoral rounds, he pitches a tent a few kilometresaway from their pastures. He then collects a basketful of greengrass and has it taken to the tribal settlement. Green grass amongdesert - dwelling people is a sign of life.

The basket of green grass passes from one family to another.But if one family is not living in peace with others, it is not allowedto pass on the basket of grass.

The priest waits for a week and if by that time the basket ofgrass has not returned to him, he knows that the tribal peace hasbeen disturbed and the people are in no condition to celebrateMass and receive Communion. He then moves on to the nextgroup in his nomadic parish.

But it seldom happens that the basket does not return. Normallythe families gladly accept the basket of green grass, and try tokeep it green and keep it moving… and so they patch up theirdifferences in a hurry and restore the peace of the community.

Will the Risen Lord, the High Priest, find us living in peacewith each other and bless our families?

What is more pleasing to Jesus is peace.

When Jesus was born, a multitude of the heavenly host sang,

"Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace amongthose whom he favors" (Lk 2: 13, 14).

In Mt 5: 23, 24 Jesus says, "When you are offering your gift atthe altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has somethingagainst you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; firstbe reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come andoffer your gift."

The first words Jesus uttered after his resurrection are: "Peacebe with you" (Jn 20: 19).

Where shall we find the peace which all of us would love toenjoy?

Jesus says: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you"(Jn 14: 27).

Peace is one of the fruits of the Spirit of Jesus (Gal 5: 22). It isgiven to those who ask for it. Jesus says, " If you then, whoare evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how muchmore will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to thosewho ask him!" (Lk 11: 13).
