May 10, 2019 Sue Merlino's 7 th grade science classes from Heim Middle recently learned about how plastics break into smaller pieces in the environment rather than decomposing. Students wanted to raise awareness about micro-plastic pollution through activism and artwork, with several students submitting work for a special exhibit at the Buffalo Museum of Science called, “I Am the Solution to Plastic Pollution”. Heim student Malena Parikh’s stunning painting of a sea turtle on a fused plastic bag canvas titled, “Turtle vs. Plastic”, was chosen for the exhibit along with an animated video created by Leander Zhai, Om Balkundi, Jack Ginter and Shyam Sriram. The public exhibit, which is sponsored by the Erie County Environment & Planning Department, is on display at the museum through May 15. Thursday night, the planetarium held a special open house to commemorate both events featuring a show about the Apollo 11 Program and a display of lunar material on loan from NASA to Mill Middle science teacher Kenneth Huff. The 2019 national competition asks college and high school students to produce a 1-3 minute video examining minimum wage laws and the impact they have on employees, employers, and the economy. Patrick was one of 10 finalists nationally and earned a cash prize for his entry. The Williamsville East High School chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) had 115 students attend the 2019 NYS FBLA State Leadership Conference in Binghamton, NY April 10-12 comprising the largest delegation at the event. During the conference, students competed in various business-related events, attended workshops, and campaigned for state office. East students brought home a total of 44 awards, and junior Chai Ratnakaram was elected the 2019-20 state vice president for District 12.

2019-20 Budget Hearing & Candidates Forum set stage for May 21 Vote

The Williamsville Board of Education held its final public hearing on the 2019-2020 proposed budget during a special meeting Thursday night. Afterward, the four candidates vying for three seats on the school board participated in a forum hosted by the PTSA Council and moderated by the League of Women Voters.

Incumbent candidates Teresa Leatherbarrow, Suzanne Van Sice, and Mary Bieger, and newcomer Swaroop Singh, PhD, answered questions posed by the audience. Watch the video on YouTube to view the discussion.

Detailed information about the 2019-2020 proposed budget is available online. The Annual District Vote & School Board Election is Tuesday, May 21 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the North High School Gym.

Ashley Spector, a senior at Williamsville North and Erie 1 BOCES’ Fashion Design Technology program, will have her handmade outfits grace the runway during the 2019 FUSION Fashion Show: Mosaic of Art, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 15 at the Harkness Career & Technical Center. The annual event showcases the work of high school students from across Western New York. “I love being able to share my designs while making clothing I can wear for myself,” Ashley said when describing her pink-themed clothing line.
