How long have you worked at KUSM–W and what was your job before

you came here? I’ve been here one year. Before coming to Wichita, I was a pediatric

neuropsychology fellow at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

What are your job responsibilities and what do you like most about your

job? My primary job responsibilities are to evaluate children with neurological,

developmental, and psychiatric disorders; work with their parents, teachers, and

physicians to develop treatment plans; and usually evaluate their progress over

time. I also teach neuropsychology trainees, medical students, and psychiatry

residents in didactic courses and clinical practica. In addition, I provide consultation

and psychotherapy services for the Center for Breast Cancer Survivorship to

address the psychosocial issues that accompany breast cancer diagnosis and

treatment.

What do you do in your spare time? I like to cook and experiment in the kitchen. I teach a high school Sunday school

class and volunteer with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. I also travel to

Kansas City quite a bit to spoil my nieces and nephews.

What’s a favorite movie and/or book? I’ve been in love with “Top Gun” for a couple of decades now. My all-time favorite

book is “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

Who is your hero or the person you most admire and why? I met some of the strongest, bravest, most optimistic little kids when I was

working at St. Jude and other Hematology/Oncology clinics. These kids and their

parents are just remarkable!

What advice do you have for medical students? Remember that med school is temporary. Harrowing, unpleasant, and downright

awful situations are still gold mines for learning how to navigate difficult situations

and people. Plus, they’ll make great stories down the road!

The Kids Christmas Project, a tradition of the KU

Wichita Midtown Clinic to provide Christmas gifts for

children of families in distress, is in need of your help!

Many of these children have no other Christmas gifts

and the needs list grows annually.

The Ryan White Part D staff use donated funds to

purchase items based on the “wish list” parents

provide. Last year, the program helped create a

memorable holiday for 46 children in Wichita under

the age of 13.

You can be a part of bringing smiles to the faces of

these children at Christmas by donating cash, or a

check, and gift cards. Donations for the Kids

Christmas project should be submitted to Jennifer

Herington in the MPA office, located on the third

floor of the main building. Contributions to the

KUSM–W Medical Practice Association are tax

deductible and contributors will be given a tax receipt

for the amount of the donation.

Any donation you can make will be appreciated and

put to good use. For more information, contact

When and how did you first

get interested in medicine?

When I hurt my ankle and went to the doctor (three

years after I ran away from a hospital when they were

trying to give my immunizations).

What field of medicine are you leaning toward?

Family Medicine, Cardiology, and Internal Medicine -

wherever I can make a greater impact in the

community and also see my wife every day.

Whom do you most admire, or who is your

hero, and why?

Dr. John Volk. He taught me that life should frame

medicine, and medicine should not frame my life. He

lived a balanced life, provided great medical care, and

had the utmost respect for his patients and the

profession.

What is one interesting fact or unusual trait

about you?

I got married approximately one month ago.

Erin Blackburn

Hometown: Garden City,

Kan.

Family: Tom Blackburn -

father; Carol Blackburn -

mother; and Kyle, Mark, and

Sara - younger siblings

When and how did you first

get interested in medicine?

It was a combination of taking an

anatomy class in high school and working as an office

assistant in an ophthalmologist’s office.

What field of medicine are you leaning toward?

I’m thinking Pediatrics or Family Medicine but I’m

keeping my options open as I try new things.

Whom do you most admire, or who is your

hero, and why?

I have many, many heroes for many reasons, but a few

would probably be: Eleanor Roosevelt for her

compassion; Amelia Earhart for her courage; Mary,

mother of Jesus, for her faith; and my mother for her

love.

What is one interesting fact or unusual trait

about you?

My favorite hobbies are reading books and watching

movies.

Robin Welch, Rural Health

Education and Services, volunteers

for the Lady Bugg House, Inc. The

purpose of the Lady Bugg House is

to help young mothers become

self-sufficient by providing them

with a safe living environment,

education, spiritual discipleship,

biblical counseling, and support for long-term

economic independence, child development,

parenting, and life skills. Visit their website here.

Lady Bugg House has given Robin a chance to use

her financial background to help others. She believes

that, “whatever you did for one of the least of these

brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” from

the book of Matthew.

When Robin first became involved in August of

2010, Lady Bugg House was no more than an

inspired idea and an old run down house. Since then

the organization has been the beneficiary of

wonderful financial support and countless volunteers

working together to turn this old house into a loving

home.

Robin says that working with the Lady Bugg House

organization has given her back so much more than

she has given. She has been inspired by the girls that

have made the commitment to work hard in order

to give their babies a better life, by the generous

donations that continue to arrive just when it looks

like the accounts are about empty, and the

wonderful volunteers that continue to be there

helping day in and day out.

everyone? YES!

The lounge located next to the convenience store on

the 2nd floor of the west wing is for everyone to use!

That's right, the space is not reserved just for medical

or pharmacy students - it is open to the entire

KUSM–W community!
