Finding Aid for KTTC News out-takes Collection, 1976-1991

    Collection Overview

Title: KTTC News out-takes Collection, 1976-1991

    Primary Creator: KTTC-TV, Rochester, Minnesota

    Extent: 534 U-matic tapes and 605 16mm film reels totaling 588 hours, 35 minutes, and 9

    seconds

Arrangement: The KTTC News out-takes Collection is arranged into two series based on format

    of the material.

Series 1. 16mm film footage: The first 185 reels are arranged according to labels

indicating reel number (2-185). Reel numbers were assigned when these were originally

indexed and the dates (in most instances) and contents of the reels were unknown. The

remaining reels are arranged chronologically where the date is known, with undated

material at the end. The reels are physically arranged on the shelves by container size to

optimize use of available space. With viewing, dates may be determined for material

that was undated at the time of digitization.

Series 2. U-matic tape footage: Arranged chronologically, with a few exceptions.

    Languages: English

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection of audio visual material contains news footage recorded by KTTC-TV between 1976 and

1991, thus dating from the time KROC-TV transitioned to KTTC-TV. Content was recorded throughout

southeastern Minnesota, as well as parts of northern Iowa and western Wisconsin. Stories reported

cover a range of subject matter, including local and national politics, weather incidents, crime, sports,

local land and business developments, education, the environment, and more. Since the footage

consists of out-takes, it is not the final finished material that would have been broadcast. The footage

was originally captured on 16mm film and U-matic tape. It has since been digitized to .avi format for

master preservation files and .mp4 format for access files. These digital files are stored on hard drives.

    Biographical Note

    Excerpted from www.kttc.com:

In July of 1953, KROC-TV, the first television station in southern Minnesota with a tower height of 600

feet, went on the air from a site four miles west of the city of Rochester in a Quonset Hut. The TV

studios, offices, and transmitter were housed within the same building as the studio, which was only the

size of an average living room. Originally, KROC-TV was signed on as sister station of KROC Radio. After

those early days, KTTC (KROC) moved into the 601 Building in downtown Rochester and remained there

until 2002 [when KTTC moved to 6301 Bandel Road NW in Rochester].

When laws were passed in the mid-1970s banning ownership of multiple stations or media in a single

market, the television station had to be sold. In 1976, Quincy Newspapers, Inc. purchased the station

from Southern Minnesota Broadcasting and the call letters were changed to KTTC (Total Tri-state

Coverage), referring to [its] coverage that spans from southeastern Minnesota to northern Iowa to parts

    of western Wisconsin.

In [its] market, [KTTC was] the first on air, first in color, first in stereo, first in the states of Minnesota

and Iowa to broadcast in full power digital and…the only local affiliate with [its] own weather radar and

    storm chaser unit.

The NewsCenter is the largest department in the station, and has to be, to cover [its] geographically

large market. Additionally, the KTTC NewsCenter produces the 9 p.m. news on [its] local Fox affiliate,

KXLT…While KTTC and KXLT are based in Rochester, Minnesota, the other stations in [its] market are

found in Austin, Minnesota and Mason City, Iowa.

Accruals: The precise acquisition of this material is somewhat unclear. A deed of gift for 11

boxes of news film, 1978-1982, was completed in July of 1995. According to former archivist

Sherry Sweetman, the 16mm film was found when moving items into the new archives addition

[1995]. Other films and tapes were acquired when KTTC moved from its old studio to a new

    studio on Signal Hill.

At some future date, it is possible that the Olmsted County Historical Society will obtain

    additional footage.
