Alger Hiss• accused of being a Soviet spy in 1948 and convicted of

perjury (lying)

Baby boom• population explosion often caused by returning soldiers

from a war

Blacklist• a list of people whom the committee believed had a

communist background. Approximately 500 people in the entertainment business field (writers, producers and directors) had their careers ruined because no one would hire them

Cold War• a non-combative conflict between the United States

(democracy) and the Soviet Union (communism). Each nation was attempting to establish itself as the world’s greatest power

Dixiecrat• Southern Democrats

Dwight D. Eisenhower• WWII general who later became president at the

beginning of the Vietnam War

Ethel & Julius Rosenberg• were American communists who were executed in 1953

for conspiracy to commit espionage

Fair Deal• an extension of Roosevelt’s New Deal which included a

proposal for a nationwide system of compulsory health insurance and a crop subsidy system to provide a steady income for farmers

Franchise• a company that offers similar products of services in

many locations. It is often sold to an individual using the parent company’s name and system that the parent company developed

GI Bill of Rights• encouraged veterans to get an education by paying part

of their tuition and also guaranteed them a year’s worth of unemployment benefits while job hunting

Harry S. Truman• Became president of the U.S. after FDR died. He had

been kept in the dark about much of the world’s politics and U.S. affairs

Hollywood Ten• Ten “unfriendly” witnesses that were called before the

HUAC committee. They were “unfriendly” because they refused to testify that the movies contained communist influence. Because they refused to testify, these ten were sent to prison

HUACHouse Un-American Activities Committee• committee formed to investigate communist influence in

the United States. It was most famous for its investigation into Hollywood’s movie industry where the committee believed that communists were sneaking propaganda into films.

H-bomb• Hydrogen bomb, much more powerful than the atomic

bomb.

Interstate Highway Act• Under Eisenhower, the interstate highway system was

expanded to 41,000 miles allowing motorists to travel easily and allowed for troop movement and evacuation routes.

John Fuster Dulles• As Secretary of State he viewed the struggle against

Communism as a classic conflict between good and evil; believed in containment and the Eisenhower doctrine.

Dr. Jonas Salk• developed a vaccine for poliomyelitis (polio)

Joseph McCarthy• United States politician who unscrupulously accused

many citizens of being Communists.

McCarthyism• Unfair accusation of people of being disloyal without

proof. People were so afraid of communism that they were ready to accuse and convict anyone on just someone’s say so

Rock n Roll• mixture of blues, country and pop. Became American

music. Heavy rhythm, simple melodies and lyrics featuring love, cars and problems of being young. Loved by teenagers hated by adults. Helped to cause the “generation gap.”
