KSSC Newsletter June 2014

Transcript of KSSC Newsletter June 2014

  • Message from the Head Teacher Welcome to our June Newsletter. We have had a busy month, with a range of visitors and

    changes made. We now have a Vertical House System and students will be deciding on

    House names in the coming weeks. All students are members of form groups which include

    students from every year. This provides opportunity for increased student leadership, peer

    support and competition. Students have moved up into new timetables and the revised

    timings of the day and week are in place.

    All these measures are in order to expand the range of support available for students to

    grow as positive citizens and make better progress. Ms C ODriscoll, Head Teacher

    Welcome to the following staff who joined us this term:

    Kingsbury Music students brighten a rainy day Talented singers and musicians from KSSC brought a ray of sunshine to a rainy afternoon in Centenary Square recently. The students were invited by the Library of Birmingham to perform in their amphitheatre, which can also be viewed from outside the library. Unfortunately the weather meant that the concert had to be held under cover, but passers-by could still listen and watch, and many did. The performance was very well received, with lots of positive comments about the students interpretation of modern pop classics such as "Ho Hey" by

    American folk rock band The Lumineers. Amongst the performers were two students who recently gained awards from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Kirsty Minchin and Ryan Phipps (pictured, with Miss Millward and teacher Miss Woodcock) The students have worked very hard and should be very proud of their achievements. We are looking forward to hearing them again at our school concert in July. Miss Millward

    Boxing a knock-out at Kingsbury

    Former British, Commonwealth and WBF International champion Wayne Elcock is working with students on his non-contact Box Clever programme. Wayne brings a fully functional mobile boxing gym to the school where he and his coaches teach the students about balance, fitness, nutrition and health. It also helps with self-confidence which can impact positively on their learning and life in general. Wayne was impressed with our students: They adapted well and all of them got involved with enthusiasm. He said: In particular the girls were impressive; technically they are very good - probably better than the boys! We have seen an increased interest in this type of sport from girls since the Olympics, with the success of Nicola Adams and Jade Jones. It is all non-contact, and students learn the basics of nutrition and the importance of a healthy lifestyle, as well as discipline, respect, team spirit and fitness. Im looking forward to working at Kingsbury for the rest of the year. The students have responded well to this extra

    opportunity who knows, we may even have

    some future Olympians! Mr Davies

    Dance trip Year 10 GCSE PE students visited South and City College, Digbeth Campus to observe a performance of the latest innovations in Dance, have a tour around the campus, and informally talk to expert tutors to find out about the range of potential courses and careers available around the field of dance in the future. Miss Millward

    Some of our students were fortunate to visit the BBC recently to learn about careers within the organisation. Year 10 student Sarah-Louise Geoghegan wrote the following report: On 22nd May we went round the BBC radio to take a tour. We learnt what it was like to be part of a radio station. We met many different people and even had chance to try out presenting the news and weather. At the end of our tour we went into a room where we could play the game Copy Cats. One student said "My experience at the BBC was entertaining. My favourite moment was when we got to play 'Copy Cats' - the TV kids show presented by Sam & Mark. All together it was a great day and really worth going!" At the end of our tour we took part in a workshop, where we discussed real life situations that people might phone up and talk about on the radio. There were many good ideas such as the children nowadays, the pressure that schools put on us and many more. The day was worth going and showed that there are so many more things behind being a presenter. The students really enjoyed the experience and I would like to thank Mosaic and the BBC for arranging the visit. Miss Fisher

    World of Work visit to the BBC

  • Students inspired by story of overcoming adversity Our latest assembly guest speaker, Shakil Butt, held Year 10 in rapt attention as he described how he spent the first few months of his life in an incubator due to severe asthma. His education and young life was severely curtailed by severe illness and hospital visits, but this did not stop him achieving his goals. Having failed at maths, he persevered to eventually pass and qualify as a professional accountant. He also overcame significant physical challenges to become a black belt in Kung Fu. Following a role as Head of Accounts at Islamic Relief, one of the UKs largest charities, for whom he started volunteering in 1990, Shakil re-trained and achieved a second professional qualification with a distinction, winning the CIPD outstanding student award. He is now the director of Human Resources and Organisational Development with IR and is currently studying a Masters in HR Management at BCU. Shakil has the following message for students: Asthma was a big part of my life, it has limited me but it doesnt define me. I am more than that. I had the perfect excuse with my asthma and its impact on my education. If you look for an excuse you will always find one but usually to make the impossible, possible just requires belief and hard work. Be the best version of you that you can possibly be. Shakil volunteers as a mentor with Mosaic, who work in secondary schools across Birmingham, including

    Kingsbury. Mosaic was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales to create opportunities for young people of all

    backgrounds growing up in deprived communities. Annalisa Lockett, Mosaics West Midlands and Lead

    Regional Manager explains: Mosaics vision is for all young people to be supported to realise their

    potential. With the help of volunteer mentors and role models such as Shakil, we aim to bridge the

    aspirations-attainment gap. We are now recruiting male and female mentors to support our primary and

    secondary school programmes starting in September 2014. Anyone interested in helping our young people

    reach their full potential can register their details on our website www.mosaicnetwork.co.uk

    New online application process for Free School Meals

    We have implemented a new electronic system for

    checking eligibility to claim free meals. It has been

    on trial in Birmingham, and is now increasingly being

    adopted by schools.

    It allows parents to apply for free meals online using your home computer.

    If you prefer, you can come into school and a member of staff will help you with the process.

    You can access the service on the website www.link2ict.org/fsm

    We are encouraging all parents to use this means of registration for the following reasons:

    Personal information is entered once and in private;

    Bringing letters/statements about your benefits into school is no longer necessary;

    Eligibility is checked immediately, so your children can receive meals to which they are entitled from the next school day;

    Your children remain on the system throughout their school careers as long as you remain eligible.

    School has a computer for you to use if you require

    help making your application. If you have any queries

    please ring Mrs J Armitage on 0121 373 1080 ext

    403.

    Trip to Oxford On 23rd May a group of Year 10 students visited Keble College Oxford to learn about the potential of higher education and life at this famous University. Student Subramanian Chandrasehar wrote the following report in response to his visit: I really appreciated the trip to Oxford; there wasnt one segment that I did not enjoy. I was taught about universities and how they are arranged, which I found very helpful. We were with an undergraduate who gave us a tour of Keble College and the Cathedral. I learnt about Oxfords rich history during the tour. The visit to the Medical Sciences Teaching Centre inspired me to aim for a career in the sciences. I got to feel a human brain which was a unique experience! I was able to ask questions of the technician which enhanced my knowledge of why a degree in medical sciences is useful. When I entered the Great Hall I was amazed by its vastness and the various portraits. I am going to set my

    sights high and work hard to get to a successful university like Oxford. This trip has had a positive effect on

    my attitude towards learning. I would like to thank those who made the trip possible! Miss Millward
