Lacrosse catching on . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4-6Lacrosse is gaining a considerable amount of popular-ity in the Midwest and elsewhere – after enjoying years of success on the East Coast – and the Kenosha Raptors are a big part of the reason. There are now more than 3,600 lacrosse players in Wisconsin, compared to fewer than 500 seven years ago. The Raptors are a cooperative high school team competing in the Milwaukee Area Youth Lacrosse League. Photographs galore . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 11-16 Cameras were clicking inside and outside this past week as family members, coaches, friends and fans of Kenosha-area community sports participants captured the action in living color. Included in this edition of KSN @Play are compelling images from local football, volleyball, cross-country and soccer games and meets. Feats of the Week. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 19-21 The Top Performers section in this edition of KSN @Play features impressive feats by athletes in seven different sports. Among the highlights are 11-year-old Claire Czerwonka’s first-place finish in a Milwaukee tennis tournament, Kendra Everts’ fourth-place finish at the Kenosha County Cross-Country Meet, Tony Martin’s 100-yard passing effort for the Racine Raptors and Shannon Becker tying UW-Parkside’s all-time goals scored record.

Lacrosse no longer flying under the radarKenosha Raptors creating awareness for the sport in southeastern Wisconsin
Considered the first American sport with roots tracing back to the 1400s, lacrosse is an exciting game and among the fastest growing sports in the United States. Lacrosse is a team sport which is played with 10 players in the men’s leagues and 12 players in the women’s leagues. Each player carries a netted stick (the crosse) that is utilized to pass and catch a hard rubber ball. The object of the game is to propel the ball into the opposing team’s goal, therefore scoring one point. Like football or basketball, four quarters are played.
You see the game on the colle-giate level pop up on your TV screen on ESPN now and then. Carthage College offers the sport to both men and women, and the Kenosha Raptors have brought awareness of the sport through their involvement at the high school level. Although immensely popular on the East Coast and other scattered pockets, lacrosse is far from mainstream nationwide. But, that may soon change.
In Wisconsin, the sport has bal-looned from 473 lacrosse players in 2004 to more than 3,600 cur-rently. The 2011 season saw 47 high school teams compete statewide and another 25 at the youth level. Next year, the state is expecting that number to grow substantially.
Breaking it down to the local level, the Kenosha Raptors – a cooperative high school team which competes in the Milwaukee Area Youth Lacrosse League – had 30 participants last year and plans to have over 100 in its program over the winter and next spring. The organization will be expanding from one team to six or seven for youth at all levels for boys and girls, depending on the turnout.
The next soccer? But what accounts for the
growth? Soccer was virtually non-existent in these parts 40 or 50 years ago, so could lacrosse become the next soccer?
Rob Wikstrom, president of the Raptors, shared his thoughts on questions such as these.
“I don’t know if lacrosse can be the next soccer, but it is growing rapidly around the country,” he said. “The Midwest has been the slowest part of the country to react to the sport, but it appears to be reacting in a positive way now.”
Backing Wikstrom’s comments is the fact Wisconsin Lacrosse was recently awarded a grant from U.S. Lacrosse. The reasoning behind the financial award is due to the fact that the governing body feels lacrosse in our state is about to explode. The Raptors have applied for some of that grant money to purchase equip-ment.
Lacrosse is not an elitist or expensive sport to play, and many parents find that attractive. On the
Tremper high School sophomore kevin roepke sends a pass ahead.

Lacrosse no longer flying under the radarKenosha Raptors creating awareness for the sport in southeastern Wisconsin
youth and adult level, clubs and leagues have popped up in the Milwaukee area and in northeast Illinois.
“For kids in Kenosha, our club gives them another option,” reasoned Wikstrom. “When you get to high school and you decide you want to try out for the baseball team, if you haven’t played since you were a little kid, you can pretty much forget about making the team. The kids pick up lacrosse so fast. If you’re an athlete, playing sports like hockey, soccer, football or basketball, they transition well into lacrosse.”
The game, which is sometimes called “the fastest game on two feet,” could be the easiest way to garner a collegiate athletic scholar-ship. More and more colleges are starting lacrosse programs. In this area, both Marquette University and Beloit College will field lacrosse pro-
grams next year. A large percentage of colleges also have lacrosse clubs available, so high school students have many options when it comes to playing at the collegiate level.
Carthage College men’s head lacrosse coach David Neff does not have any players from southeastern Wisconsin on his roster. But, that may change in the near future.

“As Kenosha and the rest of the state continue to advance the court-ship of the sport, I not only expect our roster to reflect this, but college programs throughout the Midwest will as well,” he stated. “I would love it to take off and expect it will in a short time.”
Both Neff and Wikstrom feel that the addictive nature of the sport will play a large role in its projected growth.
“Picking up a lacrosse stick may be the best bet to getting on a col-lege sports team,” said Wikstrom. “I’ve had coaches call me about the players we have in our club, and we are only five or six years old.”
“The sport is just so much in de-mand by younger generations once they have a taste of it,” noted Neff, a Waukegan native. “High school and youth lacrosse in Wisconsin is still in a development stage. Wisconsin has a rich tradition in other sports and there are very similar cross-overs to the game of lacrosse, so growth is just around the corner.”
Maybe 40 or 50 years from now, should the sport enjoy the popular-ity many envision, local historians will trace lacrosse’s Kenosha roots to when Tom Delany, a transplant from the East Coast, landed in Kenosha near the beginning of the century, wanting a place for his son to play. Those doing the research will find he created an unofficial club, giving his son a venue to play
the sport he loves. Then, Wikstrom and his group picked up the club, rather than letting it die, after Delany’s time. They made the club called the Raptors official and saw explosive growth.
This “history” is currently in the making.
