Parkside women cagers have lofty goals . . . . . . . 4-5In her 10th season as head coach, Jenny Kenesie hopes to lead the Rangers to a place they’ve never been before – an NCAA Tournament Region championship. Four seniors with plenty of experience – guard Jadee Rooney, forward Amy Selk, guard Kaitlyn Bettiga and forward Brittany Beyer – are starting for Parkside this season, each of whom started all 31 games last season. Peak performances . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 16-18 Team success is impossible without individuals rising to the occasion, and there were plenty of team members who did just that recently. Connor Brown and Thomas Pinnow came up big for Southport Bank in the championship game of the Little Leaguers of Kenosha fall season, while Jacob Ashmus scored three goals for the United FC U9 team in a win over the Serbian Soccer Club. Teaming up for success. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 19-20 Several local teams separated themselves from the pack over the past week. Deportivo Azul earned the championship of the fall session of the Adult Men’s Indoor Soccer League with a shootout victory over the Kenosha Fire, Southport Bank claimed the Little Leaguers of Kenosha fall championship with a win over SPS Dental and the United FC U9 boys Red team com-pleted a perfect 18-0 fall season.

Women’s basketball squad hopes third time is a charm
In each of the past two years, the UW-Parkside women’s basketball team has produced the best season in school history. That can’t go on forever, of course, but with four se-niors projected to start on a highly-regarded and very experienced team, this season could be the one that sends the state’s only Division II program into unchartered territory.
“All four of our seniors have had a huge impact on our program, and their experience is going to make a big difference for us this season,” said 10th-year head coach Jenny Kenesie. “Our seniors have an un-derstanding of how important each practice and each game is, and that attitude rubs off on the other players.
“The seniors are expected to be our leaders this year, and I’m confident they will do exactly that. They understand the value of ‘team’ and they are willing to work with the less experienced players, which will go a long way toward the development of those players.”
The seniors, each of whom started all 31 games last season, are 5-foot-9 shoot-ing guard Jadee Rooney, 5-11 power forward Amy Selk, 5-6 point guard Kaitlyn Bettiga and 5-10 forward Brittany Beyer.
Rooney led the Rangers in scoring (15.5 points per game) in 2010-11 and was among the top 10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in scoring, assists (116), free throw percentage (.809), three-point field goal percentage (.414) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.51).
Selk topped the league in rebounding in 2010-11 with an aver-age of 8.5, including a GLVC-best 6.16 defensive boards. She scored in double figures 14 times and was eighth in the conference in field goal percentage (.522).
“Both of them, from the minute they walked onto campus, have worked hard and done everything we’ve asked them to do,” Kenesie said. “They don’t take a day off.
They’re great role models on and off the court.”
Bettiga led the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.79), while pacing the Rangers in steals (53) and as-sists (159). Beyer, who is returning from an ankle injury, enters the 2011-12 campaign sixth in school history in scoring (1,199 points).
As juniors, this quartet helped Parkside compile its best-ever GLVC record (15-3) on the way to a 24-7 overall mark and led the Rangers to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. In 2009-10, Parkside went 23-8 and earned its first division crown.
Others expected to contribute significantly this season include
The Rangers posted a 24-7 record in 2010-11.

5-10 junior forward Cheryl Leyns, 5-8 junior guard Jaleesa Trussell and 5-10 sophomore forward Dani-elle Slivka.
Playing without Beyer, the Rangers showed signs of the team
they hope to be this season with a 60-53 exhibition victory at Divi-sion I Loyola Oct. 28. Rooney and Selk combined for 47 points, while Trussell and Slivka grabbed nine rebounds each.
“I was happy with the way we played defensively and liked the commitment and intensity that ev-eryone displayed,” Kenesie said. “It was nice to get a win, but we have to continue to improve defensively and we must get more of a balanced attack offensively.”
Kenesie calls this season’s non-conference schedule “as tough as it’s ever been” and expects Northern Kentucky, Indianapolis, Bellarmine and Lewis to be strong in the GLVC East.
“If you’re going to be one of the best teams in the country, you have to play against the best,” she said.
Kenesie acknowledges that no matter how skilled and prepared a team is, it still needs some good fortune to advance to the next level in the form of an NCAA Tournament Region title.
“To go as far as we want to go this season, things have to go your way,” Kenesie said. “You have to have some breaks and you have to stay healthy. But if you chip away day in and day out, good things will happen.
“We’ve spent the past seven or eight years trying to build a founda-tion and establish a tradition of im-provement and success. Obviously we have our goals and expectations for this season, and with toughness, commitment, dedication and pride we can get there. We are looking forward to what we hope will be an exciting year.”
