Rotary Meet – Taj Connemara

The Rotary Club of Madras invited Dr K M Cherian to deliver a talk on “Make in India – Our Medical

Initiative” set up at Frontier Mediville. Dr Cherian went on to talk of successful heart transplants he had

done, and described the first Research & Training Centre in Basic Medical Sciences & Bio Hospital, the first

in Asia & one of just 18 in the world. The Frontier Mediville

Biomedical Science Park is coming up and have recently ventured

into a project to create the first bio prosthetic valve project in

Asia. Only TTK is doing this at the moment, at a cost of Rs 20,000

per valve. The imported valve costs Rs 50,000.

With the help of Georgia Tech’s Cardiovascular Fluid Mechanics

Lab, Dr Cherian and his team believe they can manufacture heart

valves in Mediville for much affordable rates. If Dr. Cherian is

successful in this venture, the Bio hospital will be the first in the country to contribute to “Make in India-

Medical Initiative”.

“May there be many like Dr.Cherian who come back and make this nation soar”

Staff Corner

My Experience 11 th Global Forum on Humanitarian Medicine in Cardiology and Cardiac

Surgery

The 11 th Global Forum on Humanitarian Medicine in Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery was held in

Geneva , from 24 th June to 27 th June , at the University of Geneva Hospital. Our Chairman , DR K M

Cherian has been one of the pioneer members of the forum and is also an important member of the

Advisory Committee. When he was asked to send 2 members from his team to attend the meet, it was

indeed a great privilege and a wonderful opportunity for Dr Anto , Cardiac Surgeon and me to be a part

of this congress.

The conference is being organized to address key issues faced by numerous developing countries, across

the world, which includes lack of resources, both human and technology, often aggravated by adverse

economic conditions and a tremendous case load.. This meeting was organized by “Hearts for ALL”,

World Heart Federation with support from WHO. The other major supporters of the meet was the

Childrens Heartlink and the IQIC ( International Collaborative on Quality Implementation ), and the

Global Heart Network.

The vision of the IQIC is to facilitate a collaborative, comprised of healthcare teams from around the world

working to create a culture of patient safety and sustainable quality improvement and infrastructures for

children receiving congenital heart surgery in developing world . The IQIC has a database to track clinical

outcomes of in-hospital and 30-day mortality, surgical site and blood stream infections, as well as other

critical indicators for congenital heart surgery. Our hospital has been a part of the IQIC database ever since

its inception and has been identified as an active collaborative centre, and the analyzed data helps us to

understand our own peri operative outcomes.

The first day was devoted completely to the IQIC Learning Session. It consisted of Expert talks, Panel

discussions and Plenery sessions. The emphasis on Nurse Empowerment, Nurse retention through

Orientation and Training , Nurse led rounding were important topics discussed as a part of creating a

professional practice Environment. The other sessions were on Complex Decision making in the context of

developing countries , addressing conditions like TGA, TOF, Complex Single Ventricles, and pre operative

issues like Nutrition, Pneumonia, and Antibiotic policy. The day ended with a Quality Improvement

Protocol Competition, where I presented a proposal on Peri operative Nutritional Support in determining

post operative outcomes.

Page 14: KSMBOA Award for SME Excellence - Frontier Lifelinefrontierlifeline.com/pdf/newspaper/awd-2015.pdf · 2015-10-11 · KSMBOA Award for SME Excellence ... Graduation Day Ceremony of

The main conference proceeding was conducted over three days. The key issues again focused on

Strengthening Health care Services in Low and Middle Income countries, and how the IQIC database

analysis has helped in improving outcomes across all partner sites. An interesting panel discussion was on

the need for Screening for Congenital Heart Disease, which drew varied opinions , but the final conclusion

confirmed the limited role of screening.

Different centers across the world presented their successful humanitarian projects and how they are able

to sustain these projects over a period of time. An important model presented was “The

Hrudhayapoorvam Program” started by our Chairman at Madras Medical Mission, in collaboration with

Malayala Manorama, their experience with supporting underprivileged children for cardiac surgery.

Another interesting project was the Child Heart Care Project , by DR Vikas Desai of Surat, and it’s a well

known fact that Frontier Lifeline team has been involved in playing an active role in this project for the last

14 years. It was really heartening to know the various models people have adopted across the world to

sustain a Pediatric Cardiac Surgery program .

Another important organization which is a part of the Forum is the Global Heart Network. They presented

their experiences in terms of networking , supporting and crowd funding of congenital heart surgery, and

their work is mainly focused on developing countries. The rest of the sessions focused on role of

Telemedicine, Networking and Education in reaching out to under developed countries. The meeting

concluded with good feedback from all participants and setting agenda for the next meet.

Apart from the academic feast , it was a memorable trip indeed, meeting a lot of people from around the

world, including a few other doctors from other cardiac centers all over India , sharing the passion of

humanitarian medicine,. The good times spent in getting a taste of the City of Geneva, the lakeside and the

ferry rides, visiting the various landmarks and also a joyful train ride to the neighboring town of

Montreux, were all the exciting parts of the trip.

I have certainly come back with an all new perspective of Humanitarian Medicine, with ideas of newer

partnerships and stronger collaborations, and a whole lot of inspiration in finding better solutions , in a

more cost effective and best sustainable manner in our resource –limited settings. I am really thankful to

our Chairman, Dr K M CHerian , for giving me this wonderful opportunity.
