WELCOME

Dear Participants, Instructors, Colleagues and Friends,

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the first KS Krishnan School for Chemical Ecology, held from February 15-27, 2015 at the National Center for Biological Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bangalore. This school is a continuation of a SERB-sponsored School on Chemical Ecology initiated in 2014, and designed to provide advanced PhD students, postdocs and young faculty in India with a broad training in developing and addressing research questions in chemical ecology, as well as hands-on experience with various methods that can be used for such work.

We at NCBS, the University of Agriculture Sciences, and the Indian Institute of Science here in Bangalore join several distinguished instructors from across India and four continents to offer an exciting look into the world of chemical ecology. Our classes cover everything from elephants to corals, and cover topics as diverse as microbiology, pest management, chemistry, bioinformatics, neuroscience, ecology, and many others. We are also pleased to offer several practical sessions that include laboratory and field instruction, a bioprospecting excursion, and a mini-course in scientific writing and publishing.

This year is a particularly special year as we dedicate our course to the late Prof K.S. Krishnan, who was both the driving force behind this school as well as an inspiration to countless scientists around the globe. In his spirit, we hope that this course will inspire in you the curiosity about our natural world and the passion to ask questions that was Krishnan’s gift to all of us. We wish you a wonderful time, and hope this is just the beginning of your exploration into this fascinating field.

With warmest wishes,

Dr. Axel Brockmann Dr. Shannon B. Olsson
