Love is the hardest habit to break, and the most difficult to satisfy.

- Drew Barrymore

What love puts you through; no one could have put it in better words than the star of popular

romcoms, Drew Barrymore. Everyone wants to be loved; it’s like a drug, the more you get used to it

the more you lose power over others and self. But, what is wrong in feeling a strong positive emo-

tion for someone, be it your parents, friends, pets or anything for that matter? Why do we tend to

confine love to self-imposed boundaries? The reason is that we are afraid. We are afraid of being

powerless, of being so enchanted by a person or an idea that it owns you. This gives rise to insecuri-

ties and other issues which we do not want to address, which again is possible only if you are out of

denial in the first place.

But, love as an idea is actually so simple. Liking someone and having an emotional connect and be-

ing selfless in at least the matters concerning that person. We try to add and seek more meaning to

a feeling which is very animalistic by nature. And if we do find love, we try to chain it down so as to

be the only person who has access to someone’s affection. This emotional upheaval is caused only

because we cannot let go of the claim we want to have on people and their affections. We need to

try and understand how to accept love and give it back without having any expectations and de-

mands. This is quiet easy to say, rather it is a thing only to be said. You cannot not have expecta-

tions and completely let go off someone. So the only thing which we can do is give everyone enough

space so that they value for what you do rather than act because you expect or demand it.

So love all you can and let the clichés be used… because love is in the air and we all want to feel it!!

This issue starts with ‘Caught’, a poem from Kshitiz Team. Following it is ‘Auto Talk’ by A.C.T. giving

a review of the nostalgia generating ‘Vespa.’ Next we have Ishmeet Dang talking about the ‘ Apples

of His Eyes.’ We have an extensive coverage of ‘Inception’ following it. Then we have an anonymous

author writing about ‘Music.’ We have Rahul’s poem, ‘ le Unfortunates’, which is very deep and

thought provoking. ‘A Bottle of Maaza’ follows where we have Pranil recalling an interesting inci-

dent. The ever popular ‘Gurukool’ has our faculty talking about their respective better halves. Then

we have the recently started segment ‘ Twitterati.’ Tejasee Pai tells us what love is as she defines

love. Next we have ‘She’ by Prasad. ‘Sarcastically Yours’ will continue to tickle your funny bones if

you are ready to take things with a pinch of salt. Last but not the least is ‘In Thing’ reporting all the

recent happenings in the campus.

So keep turning the pages and feel the Love spread…

Caught

His arms around another girl,

His eyes locked with mine.

Every time he twirled her,

A chill ran down my spine.

Faster and faster we twisted and twirled,

Closer and closer we came.

Our partners ignorant and lost,

Caught in this mindless game.

Over a year we've been apart,

Troubled waters over the brim.

But every single movement,

Every dance I dance for him.

They say time heals all wounds,

But only if they want to be healed.

My wounds are fresh, they still bleed,

My lips are forever sealed.

It's hard to have been so close, so loved,

To feel so much hurt and pain.

To be so far for ever so long,

To see that hurt again.

Sweet memories so polluted,

So hard to remember now.

Too much happened way too fast,

It's hard to remember how.

And still we're caught in a trance,

While we twist and twirl.

His eyes locked with mine,

His arms around another girl.

The Ap-ple(s) of My Eye!

It is not everyday that somebody like me is asked to write about love. So after I recovered from my initial shock and finally comprehended that I had been asked to write about my love for gadgets, and that too of a particular company more than anything else, I sat think-ing - what is it that makes people fall in love with these pieces of hardware and software? Is it the product, or just marketing?

I have been labeled the poster boy of Apple pretty much ever since I’ve owned a Mac. That probably happened partly because there still aren’t many people in India who use Macs, and partly because I’ve always been pretty vocal about my appreciation of this company. So much so that I’m expected to defend it whenever a negative comment is made against it in class! So why is it that I, or so many others commonly called Apple Fanboys, swear by this company? Well, we have our reasons:

( )

!

( )

!

Page 7: Kshitiz Newsletter

The Design Philosophy: I don’t think many people would disagree with me when I say that Apple clearly has the best-designed products in the industry. Apple has a very sim-plistic design philosophy where they try to reduce movable and breakable parts to a minimum. Thanks to this very design phi-losophy they have been able to create products like the Mac-Book Pro, the iPhone and the iPad out of just one or two blocks of aluminum, glass and polycarbonate. What results is a product that looks more premi-um, sophisticated and durable than anything else on the mar-ket. Competitors have been try-ing to emulate this design phi-losophy for years and still have-n’t been able to match up quite well at all.

Integration: Apple was arguably one of the first companies that thought about a com-pletely integrated ecosystem where all your devices would be able to talk to each other and seamlessly sync content. I being a geek have always visualized a home where I can just control everything through a device, and Apple I feel is definitely the closest to achieving that kind of an ecosystem. Whenever Apple launches a new product, they have already thought about what they want this particular device to integrate with the compa-ny’s other offerings and that’s why everything just works so well.

It’s good to know that I can sync my content or even control whatever is on my computer screen over Wi-Fi without having to install any additional software at all. Sure all this can be done on other devices as well, but it’s definitely not half as simple as it is to do between Apple devices.

Page 8: Kshitiz Newsletter

The Ease of Use: I don’t think I can ever go back to using a Windows machine as my full time computer. I find that Macs are so much easier and intuitive to use as com-pared to Windows machines. Now, I feel I’m qualified enough to say this because I have used both for extended periods of time and I found that Macs are just better. People often say that Windows is better because there is so much more software available but I have never found myself stuck in a situation where I couldn’t find a vari-ant of the same software for Macs. One just needs to look around sometimes. Macs have now had multi-touch gestures for more than 5 years and they work extremely well. Microsoft and Co. has been trying to implement them for about the same time and I still haven’t seen one laptop where the experience comes even close.

Steve Jobs: One big reason for me being in love with this company and talking about its products is definitely its late CEO Steve Jobs. I’m highly inspired by his mar-keting and selling acumen. He wasn’t a technology guy as such but he had a pretty good understanding of what his customers would like. So much so that he never re-lied much on market research at all. He believed that he knew what the customers needed and that they didn’t. His attitude, charisma, and a brilliant brain have been pivotal in making the company what it is today and they are clearly losing the plot somewhat now that he isn’t there to guide them. He was the man who has been responsible for reinventing more industries than I can count, and yet he carried that rebellious and pirate like attitude that he began the company with.

Page 9: Kshitiz Newsletter

The Marketing: This is one appreciation for the company that I have recently developed. You read about any marketing funda in Kotler and you’ll realize that this company has applied it somewhere or the other. They are perhaps one of the best examples of cross selling, where they hook you on one product and then you just keep buying newer versions of that product and the company’s other prod-ucts. They redefined retail selling by creating huge stores made out of glass and marble, all inspired by the same design philosophy that I talked about earlier. These stores are minimalistic and don’t feature anything out of the ordinary, and are yet one of the most visited stores in the world! They created a new kind of ad-vertising by creating celebrities out of the people that worked within the compa-ny itself and featuring them rather than hiring people from outside. Their legend-ary black silhouette with white iPod headphones advertisements are popular even today. They are a big marketing lesson for any marketing enthusiast!

Now I don’t disagree that Apple products are expensive, but I can also pretty con-fidently say that once you take the dive, you don’t regret because the experience just matches up. It’s not about how many gigabytes of RAM the device has or how long the battery lasts, but about how the device gets the work done and be-comes an extension of your life, and I think Apple’s devices do this part better than anyone else!

INCEPTION 3.0

One two three . . . with a drum roll and electric guitar, music boomed from the

open aired theatre. Lights flew into the sky and transformed a sober Sunday

evening into a memorable soiree. With a crowd -pulling sound check by band

Agnya, from Bombay formed in the year 2010, which fuses sounds from around

the world to create heart-felt melodies, the evening began to roll.

The crowd rushed to the amphi theatre as the participants exercised their vocal

chords with notes at different pitches. The individual performances began with

the band judging the event. Each of the performance was a run up to the main

performance by the band that lead to energy levels reaching new heights. Fac-

ulty also showed their support and took active part in the happenings of the

evening.

Music is eloquent, a language which can describe all your emotions, your relationships articulately; be it patriotism, or your love for your mother, it could be the relationship

that you share with your family, it could be friendship be-tween people or with your pets, your passion for sports,

or may be your love for music itself. At times, it describes hatred, loss, helplessness and loneliness!! Music has the power to connect people, people who have similar tastes

in music, people who have opposite taste in music! It unites people, our national anthem does.

I love music because it distracts me, it cheers me up when I'm low, it motivates me. Music has the power to

change my mood and it is in my control to change the mu-sic! It gives me peace of mind when I want to sleep; it makes me feel happy when I'm sad! I have always no-ticed that I get attached to the music created by such

musicians who have struggled a lot in their life, unknow-ingly! Their stories, their love for what they do, their per-sistence motivates me. Kishore Kumar is my all-time fa-

vourite. I've always admired his compositions, especially because he could mould any song the way he wanted to. The fact that he is so versa-tile, that he could act and sing together is

another reason why I respect him so much.

le-Unfortunates With all your cherubic innocence, you exist before me:

With all your unemotional divinity, you capture my mind.

Your nonchalant countenance immerses me in sorrowful waters:

Your heavenly poise instigate my wings of thought.

You may never see those lustrous rainbows;

You may never see those splendorous sunrises:

The sparkling stars, the lambent moon,

The verde and the azure that you may never behold.

Impervious to the smile , Ignorant of those tears;

You bide your existence, sans any whinge.

But blessed are you my little one,

Because you may also never see;

Those murderous sabres and those heinous claws,

Which rip apart any emotion that is humane.

Blessed are you my angel,

Because you may never hear;

Those bloodcurdling war cries

and those deafening explosions,

Which wow to wipe off all the love from this world.

Page 13: Kshitiz Newsletter

Blessed are you my child,

Because you may never need to voice;

Those pretentious flatteries and needling blasphemy,

Which make those humans, devil incarnates.

If so ever there’s a trifle of sorrow within you,

If at all there is an all pervading emptiness:

Fret not my princess,

Because the rest of those are lesser mortals with derelict emotions;

They don’t see the benevolence in your eyes,

They don’t hear out the condolence from your lips,

They never remember the helping hand that you lend,

They never acknowledge the support you give:

So never you are the unfortunate one;

You are the blessed one.

And I can only pity those delirious folks,

Who have forgotten to love with heart and soul.

Excerpts:

More unfortunate are those who possess all their senses, yet never use them to love and

care for each other. It is better to be blind, deaf and dumb rather than possess all those fac-

ulties and still perceive hateful deeds. Never love for a reason, love just because you feel to

do so, from the bottom of your heart.

“Tum pehle pee lo betaji”, said a man to his daughter, sitting alongside his wife. They

were sitting right in front of me on my daily 11.55am train to Andheri. Being the 31st

of December, the train was more crowded than usual. In spite of that I could see eve-

ryone with a spark in their eyes, preparing for their New Years’ Eve, I guessed.

Away from their glory, I found myself stuck in an inner turmoil, mainly due to a failed

argument with Dad in the morning. And if that wasn’t bad enough, I was travelling all

the way to college just to submit a stupid University form.

“No, I’ve heard enough about it, you aren’t going and that’s final”, said Dad.

“But its New Year’s Eve and everyone’s…” I justified as he slammed the door and left,

before I could complete my plea. And that fizzled out my plans of booze(beer), babe

(Neha Dhupia) and bash(Sahara Star).

Rajendra Singh Rathore aka my Dad, a dedicated Senior Executive at the HSBC Bank &

a stern father back home. Although I always admire his stature, I’m not really a fan of

his. The reason why? We never gel! Given a topic, Dad thinks east while I’m adamant

about the west. Consider today’s tiff – he wants me to have a quiet family-dinner to

bring in the New Years, and if I try to budge then I had to

be ready for a full dose of family bonding and values lec-

ture!

My mind was full of these dampeners when a sound broke

my thoughts. “Mom be quick, I want to drink”, the little girl

shouted at the top of her voice.

And by doing so, she gathered the attention of almost eve-

ryone present in the compartment, including me. I ad-

mired her innocent thrill when I noticed a strange thing.

The girl took a sip from the bottle of maaza and then

passed it to her mother who took a sip and passed it to

her husband.

Pranil Palan (PGP I)

Page 15: Kshitiz Newsletter

The husband then without drinking it would pass the bottle to his daughter, as

she eagerly awaited her turn. At every round, he continued the same, making

sure that his wife and kid enjoyed the drink, oblivious to his own thirst or lust

of the drink. I looked at the man. He was the one who paid for the drink, why

wouldn’t he take a sip?

And that’s when I started to wonder…

“He looked to be in his thirties; didn’t he have a life of his own? After all

what’s so great in living for others? Couldn’t he have bought two bottles so

that he could have gottne to drink? But I soon realized that it wasn’t about the

number of bottles!”

Slowly, I started to remember me and Dad on one of our vacation trips. I re-

called how Dad used to push me and mom to indulge in our fancies viz. de-

mands, choices, etc. while he hardly cared for his own.

Soon, the picture extrapolated and I recalled many more such instances.

That’s when I realized how my Dad is, or maybe how all Dads are.

Being the inquisitive-self that I am, I started interacting with that man and

soon I asked him for the explanation to his actions.

Page 16: Kshitiz Newsletter

He smiled and said, “Son, that’s how parents are. Our children mean the

world to us. After all for whom do I strive for hours at the office? It’s actually

for these little moments of togetherness where I have my wife beside me

and my daughter enjoying this drink. Although I do worry about the fact that

tomorrow my daughter will grow old and she’ll start enjoying the company of

her friends more than us!”

I thought about this for a minute and the train reached my destination.

Later that day, I placed a card on Dad’s chair before he arrived for dinner. He

opened it and read it aloud to mom. It said,

“Thank you Dad for what you are. I was too shallow a person to not realize your importance, but not anymore.

I’m really sorry for the tiff in the morning. Happy New Year!!

Your son - Jay”

Kshitiz Note: This time for the February Special Edition for our GuruKool Segment. We decided to do something different. So we did interview couples (Sample size was 2) Divya Singhal ma’am and V. Padhmanabhan Sir, Kanupriya ma’am and Jagruk Sir. Who candidly answered a few of our questions.

Read on.. We sure hope you enjoy this section..

Q1. Business requires more Conflict man-agement or Love and Marriage? How so?

Kanupriya Ma’am and Jagrook Sir : We believe Mar-

riage is more about conflict management – but it is not

like ‘Business’ as no love is lost…

Divya Ma’am and V. Padhmanabhan Sir :

Though, the sources of conflict in the above mentioned

areas may be different; the resulting impacts are all the same. With the right presence of

mind, humour, empathy and awareness about the context, issues can be reframed effec-

Page 18: Kshitiz Newsletter

Q.What is Valentine’s Day to you? How would do you spend your V-day?

Kanupriya Ma’am and Jagrook Sir : Valentine ’s Day is a day to celebrate our love for

each other. This Valentine’s day, we plan to go out on a quiet, romantic dinner. (Most of all we

want it to be a day without case readings, class preparations, paper corrections, readings, etc.)

Q. What according to you will be perfect metaphor for Love? What will be for Marriage?

Divya Ma’am and V. Padhmanabhan Sir : Metaphor for love and

marriage: Vodafone pug

Kanupriya Ma’am and Jagrook Sir : Love is a spice with many

tastes--a dizzying array of textures and moments [Seinfeld]

Marriage is when the couple mixes these in a strange proportion!

Q. How is it to work together? How do you differentiate be-tween Personal and Professional Life?

Kanupriya Ma’am and Jagrook Sir : Work together is fun. Especially when

you have an argument .

Divya Ma’am and V. Padhmanabhan Sir :We have never taken Valen-

tine ’s Day seriously; unless it has become a serious issue of conflict on

that day. Do we have V-day off at GIM?

Divya Ma’am and V. Padhmanabhan Sir : Of course, it is good to work

together. In professional life, we search case studies and re-

search papers together; once we reach home, our personal

life begin with searching for recipes for that night’s dinner.

Page 19: Kshitiz Newsletter

Kanupriya Ma’am and Jagrook Sir : Have a lot of

common hobbies. Be friends first.

Q. According to you, What Core competencies help create a suc-cessful marriage/ romantic relationship (long term)?

Divya Ma’am and V. Padhmanabhan Sir : Ability to appreciate diversity,

time and space and being sensitive with the opposite persona whom one

lives with.

Q. What would be your Porters 5 force analy-sis for love?

Divya Ma’am and V. Padhmanabhan Sir : Think outside the

box of five-forces

Kanupriya Ma’am and Jagrook Sir : Don’t know

about love but the five forces in a marriage – husband, wife, in-laws, kids

and good-looking ‘significant others’ ;-)

Kanupriya Ma’am and Jagrook Sir : “(When we are hungry) Love will

keep us alive” – Eagles [Literally!!]

Q. If you have to sing a song for your better half, Which would it be?

Divya Ma’am and V. Padhmanabhan Sir :

Aane wala pal jaane wala hai…ho sake to isme zindgi bita do..pal jo ye jaane

wala hai…

Page 20: Kshitiz Newsletter

Q1. Any Marital Advice for GIM Students?

Kanupriya Ma’am and Jagrook Sir : Before my marriage my Father-in-law gave me a very serious advice. He said, “Beta, if

you want a sure shot fight with your wife, say something bad about her relatives or find

faults with something they gave!”

Empathy. Understanding that in modern times, there is no stereotyping of roles for the

husband/ wife.

Q. As a couple People Perceive us as...

Divya Ma’am and V. Padhmanabhan Sir : Recall the slogan of Wills-filter :)

Kanupriya Ma’am and Jagrook Sir : Fun to be with…as long as they

don’t cook for us!!

Divya Ma’am and V. Padhmanabhan Sir : There are no right advices re-

garding marriage and conflicts, so just experience it and “know thyself.”

Love is when, You understand and get to know yourself, build yourself up to be so strong that you are confident that you can take care of yourself and your own life, that u don’t need anyone, that no one can hurt you without your permis-sion. And then, you meet someone who makes you want to surrender all of yourself, without hesitation. When you become ready to lay yourself totally open in front of him, all your vulnerabilities, your fears, your dreams, your weaknesses, your wishes and ambitions and principles, things that make you think and feel and wonder and laugh and cry. When the tiniest of his unhappiness zoom straight inside your heart, when you feel like bringing the whole world to his feet, just to make him happy, when you are ready to give him all the freedom and right over your life, comfortable in knowing that the other person is so strong that he will hon-our you. The you that you’ve exposed. And that he will never take ad-vantage of your openness, will care for you because he wants to, not be-cause it’s supposed to be that way. When adjustment doesn’t feel like adjustment, when you willingly make yourself flexible for his sake, when the freedom between you makes your relationship stronger, when both of you start feeling that you need each other, not because you lack something, but because of how much both of you enjoy being part of one another’s lives. That’s love for real….

STRIKE!!! STRIKE!!! STRIKE!!!

In the month of February all the male students of Goa Insti-

tute of Management decide to go on strike. They are just too

frustrated. And now enough is enough.

This has to do with the Girls on campus. And they have made

some serious allegations. One of them said to Kshitiz team–

“Hamaari to koi value hi nahi hai!! Puppies on campus are

loved more than we are”. (Sobbed.. Tear rolled down… Sniff)

They have named their movement as Men against Cute Pup-

pies.

Developing Core Competencies

@GIM 15 years from now a student of GIM was being Interviewed

Reporter : what is the secret of her success in operations

job.

ExGIM Student: “Afternoon naps”.

Reporter: But you work in a camshafts manufacturing firm.

How do you manage to sleep amidst all this noise?

ExGIM Student (laughs) : Practice. Well it all started with

construction work at GIM…

From Sleepless night in Sanquelim it’s now “Sleepless Days in

Sanquelim”!!

Yes, apart from Ashlyn’s constant efforts to ensure

that we don’t grab an afternoon nap there are others

who are also working hard for the same cause. The

construction work these days has deprived GIM’s lazy

day sleepers of their precious sleep. The constant drill-

ing sounds are like drum beats in welcome of the up-

coming batch. However we at GIM know how to

snatch back what we want, if we can sleep in lectures

then the constant boom boom bang bang will soon become our lullaby.

1Billion Rising

When the whole country is raging in anger for the injustice prev-

alent in society against girls, GIM has come up with its own way

to spread awareness. In its unique initiative around 60 students

have come together for the cause and are practicing day and

night to deliver a flawless performance. In the last 6 months we

have never witnessed a cause so dear to all. Let’s wish the team

best of luck for the campaign!

Coffee and Tea under bars!!

After the 1 billion rising there is another cause that has united all GIM students. Run-

ning to Jaggu, to grab a coffee in order to make it for the next lecture now sounds like

days of the old. Management argues that the new machines will compensate for

Jaggu but it’s not about just a cup of coffee, it’s a culture we at

GIM have come to know. Hope the new SAC, (on public de-

mand), can come up with better solution.
