There are two irregular verbs:ser: era, eras, era, éramos, erais, eran (I was /used to be etc)ir: iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, ibais, iban (I used to go etc)
A The imperfect tense – “used to”This past tense is used to talk about what you used to do. It is also used to say what was happening in the past.Llevaba vaqueros, pero ahora llevo un traje. I used to wear jeans, but now I wear a suit.
D Speaking Spanish in shopsSpeaking Spanish in the classroom is quite easy – you can prepare what you want to say and practice it with a friend before you have to say it. But what if you’re on holiday and want to buy a souvenir for your mum? Do you know how to say “Excuse me please I think I’d quite like that blue china elephant over there in the corner.” Probably not, but you know please, blue and that over there, (and you probably know elephant if you think about it):– Aquel elefante azúl por favorIt might not be the best sentence ever in Spanish, but it gets your message across.
B Comparatives and superlatives – cheap, cheaper, cheapest! In Zoom 1 you learned how to compare things: El centro comercial es barato pero el mercado es más barato. The shopping centre is cheap but the market is cheaper. In English some adjectives add –est to show “the most” of something eg cheapest, shortest, funniest. In Spanish you just use lo más.Lo más must change and agree with the thing it is describing: masculine, feminine, singular or plural, as must the adjective it uses:Masculine singular: El almacén es lo más anticuado. The department store is the most old-fashioned.Feminine singular: La tienda de caridad es la más barata. The charity shop is the chea`pest.Masculine plural: Los estilos de los años setenta son los más ridículos. The styles from the seventies are the most ridiculous.Feminine plural: Las botas negras son las más caras. The black boots are the most expensive.

C Escuchar Listening to long textsSometimes listening to a foreign language can be confusing. Don’t panic – there are ways to make it easier.
8 Can you remember how to say: thank you, I would like, I’m interested in?
9 Without looking anything up, how would you ask for:A this white T-shirt with the pink flowersB that funny red and yellow straw hatC that really strange orange stripy dress hanging up over there
1 Put these sentences into Spanish:1 My mum used to wear a blue coat but now she wears a black one.2 Rosa and Ana used to go to the shopping centre but now they go to
the market.3 We used to wear uniform at school.4 He used to be famous.
3 Listen to this conversation between six friends. Don’t try to take any notes, just sit back, maybe close your eyes and listen.
4 This time, before you listen, write down the names of any shops you heard across the top of your page. Listen again. Were you right?
• Did you try to write while you were listening? Did that stop you listening? Or is it harder to just remember what you heard and write at the end?
5 Listen again. This time, near the bottom of your page, write down any opinions you hear, either during or after listening. Compare what you have written with someone else. Did they hear anything different?
6 Listen again. Can you match any of your opinions to the shops?
7 Last job. Listen again. Underline any opinions expressed by a boy. Circle any opinions expressed by a girl.
Why is listening so hard? Is it easier to “listen” to a video? Why? Which of these techniques help you: Listen to short pieces of a long text. Listen and take notes. Listen for one piece of information. Listen for anything you understand.
