The Story

www.magiccarpettheatre.com

lash, crash, bang, boom! The Wizard's unusual alarm clock woke him up and tipped him out of bed. He was never in a good temper in the mornings. Catastrophe his white cat ran out of the way and peered from underneath the table as the FWizard muttered spells. His clothes flew from hangers, chair and wardrobe, they flew through the air, and pulled,

zipped, buttoned and fastened around him as he stood like a scarecrow, arms outstretched.

Sometimes the Wizard forgot the exact spell and the clothes got all jumbled up. He got very cross when his cloak tried to wrap around his head and his hat thought it was a sock, making him hop around his bedroom ending up in a pile of clothes and with a stubbed toe.

Although Catastrophe was a white cat and not a black cat, no one could tell! She could not be seen; in fact she was quite invisible. The Wizard had been trying to turn Catastrophe into a black cat. He thought that a Wizard should have a black cat. As usual his spell had gone very wrong. It did mean that Catastrophe could play tricks on the Wizard, moving things without being seen and often getting in the way of his spell making.

"Breakfast time!" the Wizard exclaimed, and Catastrophe flew downstairs and out of the back door. She knew that when the Wizard started to make spells in the kitchen it was time to keep out of the way.He was trying out a new sort of tea, blue tea, cold blue tea. He'd made it by crushing up some berries and adding one or two secret ingredients. Actually it tasted quite revolting but he pretended that he liked it.The only trouble was every time he poured some out he seemed to have more and more!

Bong Bong, the whole castle shook, it was the door bell, it sounded more like Big Ben! "Who could it be?" thought the Wizard, he had very few visitors. Castle Magic was far away from anywhere. When he looked out of the window he saw a girl. She took something out of a big green bag, pushed it through the letterbox and rode off on her bicycle ringing her bell. “Strange, must have been delivered by mistake,” the Wizard murmured to the invisible Catastrophe. That's when Catastrophe pounced, she hadn't seen a newspaper delivered before. As Catastrophe tore into the paper, pieces flew around the castle. The Wizard wasn't pleased. He had chase around catching all the bits and then use a spell to restore the newspaper. Just as he was settling down to read it a most extraordinary thing happened, a letter arrived. Not very out-of the-ordinary for many people, but the Wizard didn't get many letters, in fact he hadn't had a letter for a very, very long time.“What an exciting day” he thought, "rny horriblescope said I was going to have an exciting day and have a strange visitor.”

Slowly the Wizard opened the letter and read it out loud....

Dear Wizardl want to be a sorcerer's apprentice. I promise that I will practice very hard to learn all your smells.

Have you got a black tac? I expect I will have to wave a nawd and wear a tah.I hope that I don't turn into a grof.

From your long lost nephew,Mickey.

The Wizard didn't know he had a long lost nephew. “Hmm I don't think he'll be able to find his way to the Castle, it's very difficult to find even with a map, and I'm sure he hasn't got a map,” thought the Wizard. But Mickey had got a map. Mickey had found it while rooting through old boxes in the garden shed. He'd found the map at the bottom of an old trunk.

“Follow the side of the Dark Pool, don't fall in, pass the West Woods with the great West Castle towering in the middle”, said Mickey, reading aloud the instructions on the map, “I hope that I've got it the right way round”.

At first, Mickey wondered if he was at the right place, “looks a very creepy place”, he thought, “I'd better knock at the door and see if anyone is at home”.

Bong, Bong, the Wizard's door bell echoed round the Castle, bottles jumped on shelves the Wizard thought, “There's someone at the door, whoever can it be, I haven't had any visitors for a very, very long time.” When the Wizard looked out he saw Mickey, wearing trainers, a track suit and a baseball cap. Mickey was listening to his Walkman and playing with a YoYo.“Must be someone from outer space”, thought the Wizard, he hadn't seen anyone dressed like that before. “Can I help you?” he asked Mickey. “Errgh!” shouted Mickey and jumped a metre in the air. He had been listening to his Walkman and hadn't heard the Wizard walk up behind him. “I'm looking for the Wizard”, Mickey replied. “Oh no, I don't want any lizards thank you”, said the Wizard. “I'm looking for the Wizard,” said Mickey, a little louder. “No, No there hasn't been a blizzard,” muttered the Wizard, “It's been raining a little this morning”. “The WIZARD!” Mickey shouted. “Well, why didn't you say so,” said the Wizard at last, “So you must be my long lost nephew.”“I am and I've come to learn all about magic spells”, replied Mickey. The Wizard thought Mickey oughi to learn more about spelling, but he decided to give him a job helping to clean up the Castle. It was a very dusty place. Mickey's first job was dusting the dungeons. He wasn't very keen on this idea and he pestered and pestered the Wizard to teach him some spells. “Learning spells is a very serious business”, said the Wizard, “you have to get the spell exactly right”. Catastrophe the Cat would agree with that, the Wizard didn't get all his spells right and Castle Magic didn't need someone else getting spells wrong.

“What's that noise?” said Mickey. He'd heard a strange laughing sound. “Oh that's the lady who lives next door, it's Edna. She used to be very spooky, a Witch!” said the Wizard. One day she turned a Wizard into a Frog and was about to bake a Frog pie! Luckily her spell didn't work and she managed to turn the Frog back into a Wizard. It frightened her so much that she promised to be a very good Witch for the rest of her life and never turn any one into a Frog ever again. “Good job too”, said Mickey, “I don't like Witches.”

The Wizard had told Mickey that he should never go anywhere near his large black and gold spell chest. Of course Mickey was very curious he really wanted to know what was inside. Mickey thought that he could make a spell just as well as the Wizard could. One day Mickey found two of the Wizard's Potion bottles, one purple glass with a round stopper, the other dark green. Mickey decided to ask the Wizard what was kept in the bottles.“Where did you get these from?” asked the Wizard, “Next to that big spell chest” replied Mickey. “I've told you, don't go near that spell chest, it contains my special magic spells,” said the Wizard very sternly. Mickey only wanted to look inside even more. The Wizard decided to teach Mickey the way he remembered what was in each bottle. One bottle was for good spells, and one for bad spells. “I say a little rhyme”, explained the Wizard, “I say, the one that is green will give you a bad dream,” “I'll try it,” said Mickey, “the one on the top tastes like pop!” “It does not,” said the Wizard, “you have to say a rhyme with green in it.” “OK. I'll say a rhyme with green in it” said Mickey, “The one that is green tastes like ice cream”. No sooner had he said it than he drank the few drops of liquid left in the bottom of the green potion bottle.“Oh No! Don't drink it” cried the Wizard, but it was too late, Mickey had drunk the remaining few drops of Hypnofrying Potion. When Mickey eventually stopped whirling round and round the Wizard tested to see if he was completely hypnofried, he was.“I'll have to use my anti-hypnofrying box,” said the Wizard putting what looked like a giant TV over Mickey's head and turning the large lever on top.It brought Mickey round straight away but he thought he would play a trick on the Wizard. He pretended he was still hypnofried. The Wizard was puzzled, his box had always worked before, he decided to get his spell chest and book and mix a spell to wake Mickey up.When Mickey heard that, he was very excited, now was his chance to look inside the Spell Chest! He heard the Wizard coming back and stood very still, but not in the same place. “Funny”, thought the Wizard, “he must have moved, I'll need some extra spells, 3 worms toe nails, 2 snakes legs, 6 lizards eye balls, 1 bat, 1 spider.....” The Wizard went off in search of his ingredients leaving Mickey alone, with the Spell Chest. Mickey thought he'd try looking in the Spell Book first, there were spells for all occasions including a spell for turning your brother into a frog, and for making a football. Mickey thought he would like a football, “I'll try that” he said. The Spell Chest was very dusty and Mickey sneezed when he blew the dust off the top. He listened to see if he could hear the Wizard coming back. He couldn't, the coast was clear. Slowly he opened the chest; there were bats, spiders, and, a Magic Wand. Mickey

www.magiccarpettheatre.com

knew that you had to hold it in the air and recite the spell. He thought he would try the football spell. “ABRACAZEE, ABRACARALL, MAKE ME A NEW FOOTBALL”.And that's when it all happened; flames shot from the spell book, there was a huge bang, lightning flashed and thunder roared. But Mickey wasn't frightened, just a little worried maybe. In the Spell Chest, right at the bottom was a black cloth, slowly a round shape started to form under the black cloth, bigger and bigger it started to float up and up. “Must be the football”, thought Mickey. It wasn't!

Mickey grabbed the cloth and it almost pulled him over. The cloth slipped down and underneath the cloth was, not a football, but two green EYES and a grinning face!Mickey tried to get it back into the Spell Chest, but it was no good, whatever he did the head floated around the Wizard's Castle laughing at him.

It was lucky that at that moment the Wizard came back. He quickly saw what had happened, it took three of the Wizard's most powerful spells, “wiz was woo, Wiz Was Wooo, WIZZ WAS W0000000!” he exclaimed. On the third time it worked. Back into the Spell Chest went the cloth and head, and the lid slammed shut.“What were you doing?” asked the Wizard. “I only wanted to see how the spells worked,” said Mickey. “Well Mickey you got a really close look, I hope that that's taught you a lesson, I hope that you'll never look into my things again.” said the Wizard. The Wizard was about to send his nephew home but, just in the nick of time Mickey managed to get the spell right, quite by accident.

But Catastrophe was still causing trouble! She was still invisible and the Wizard and Mickey could hear her, but they couldn’t see her!. They chased around the castle trying to catch her and only ended up catching each other.Suddenly Mickey managed to catch hold of the invisible cat who did not like being held and Mickey was struggling to hold the cat that he couldn’t see but could feel and hear. “Keep still!” shouted the Wizard, “I’m trying to”, said Mickey. The Wizard grabbed his magic cloak and threw it over Mickey and Catastrophe, muttering a spell the Wizard pulled the cloak off and found that Mickey, and Catastrophe had... disappeared! “Oh No!” said the Wizard, “I’ll need a big WIZ, Waz, WOOOOOOO!” And it worked! Carastrophe and Mickey re-appeared and the Wizard said, “Catastrophe we can see you and you are a black cat! Hooray!”

The next day it was a bright sunny morning. When Mickey woke up he could hear the Wizard in the kitchen talking to Catastrophe the Cat.“Like a glass of blue tea?” said the Wizard. “No thank you,” Mickey replied, he didn't like the look or smell of the tea.“I have to go on a visit today,” said the Wizard, “please make sure that you tidy up and answer the door if any visitors arrive, you will be on your own in the Castle so please don't get into any trouble.”

But that's just what Mickey did, and Catastrophe the Cat watched it all and told the Wizard, all about it when he came back. What do YOU think Catastrophe told the Wizard?
