Preparation Cut clay into small ball-sized portions ready for one per child. Provide natural materials if site has low resources. Provide tools such as blunt knives and little bowls of water so the children can add texture and detail. Session Outline • Prop a fairy door on a tree and leave a note next it explaining that the fairies get quite lonely when all of the children go home and they’d like some more friends. Can they help to make a forest friend and press it onto a tree trunk? They could make a full body sculpture or just the face. Talk about the body/ facial features, shapes, proportions and positioning of each. You could link it to a science objective about the body and joints if desired. Can the children use simple clay tools to add effects such as patterns and textures. They could find some natural materials to press into the clay to represent different body parts such as legs or eyes. Talk about their sculpture's facial expression: is it smiling and welcoming for the fairies. After pressing on or placing their sculpture by a tree, talk about how the fairies will feel now. Top Tips To attach items to the clay securely, score the clay with a clay knife then twist the item into the clay. Use air dried clay as this does not contain PVCs and so is better for the environment than polymer clay. Differentiation: HA- Can they describe and name the natural materials they have used? Can they describe the facial features? LA- Prompts for ideas and help manipulating materials. Extension: Can you use your forest friends for the basis of a simple story? Session Objectives Children will be able to manipulate materials to create imaginative representations of faces. Resources Lots of different different shapes, sizes and colours of natural materials; air drying clay; fairy door (you can buy these online); fairy note. Key Vocabulary facial features such as ears, eyes, nose; shapes; press; squash; roll; flatten; pinch etc Risk Assessments Generic Site RA; Sticks RA. Curriculum Links Art: (KS1) Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products; To use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination. Maths: (Y1) Recognise and name common 3D shapes; (Y2) Order and arrange combinations of mathematical objects in patterns and sequences. Design and Technology: (KS1) Select from and use a wide range of materials and components according to their characteristics; Build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable Science: Science: (Y1) Identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees; Describe the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials; Identify, name, draw and label the basic parts of the human body and say which part of the body is associated with each sense.
