What  Learning  Looks  Like

OutcomesO Acquire  an  understanding  of  the  purpose  and  practice  of  Number  Talks

O Become  familiar  with  common  tools,  strategies  and  procedures

O Explore  what  students  and  teachers  say  and  do  to  activate  strategic  thinking  about  numbers

Five  Goals  of  Number  Talks

O Number  senseO Place  ValueO Fluency  O PropertiesO Mathematical  ideas

Design  of  Number  Talks:  Strings

O Builds  mental  facility  with  a  computational  strategy  and  concept.

O Starts  with  small  numbers  to  emphasize  strategy  and  build  confidence

O Consists  of  a  series  of  3-‐5  related  computational  problems

Things  to  RememberO Encourage  students  to  try  someone  else’s  method  on  subsequent  problems  in  a  string.

O Watch  for  opportunities  to  move  students  toward  your  purpose  for  the  day.

O Encourage  students  to  use  what  they  know,  by  planning  a  sequence  of  problems  that  are  useful  to  each  other.

Activity1. In  pairs  ,  analyze  the  problem  strings

you  have  been  given.2. Identify  the  strategy  the  problem

strings  are  designed  to  activate.3. Discuss  what  you  might  expect

students  to  do  and  say  as  they  work  with  these  problem  strings.

4. Discuss  what  the  teacher  might  do  and  say  to  facilitate  discovery  and  reasoning.

Keys  to  Number  TalksO Activate  Mental  Math  Strategies

O Design  to  develop  and  reinforce  strategies

O Promote  academic  and  accountable  talk

O Encourage  short  and  engaging  segments
