It is time to Believe Again.

As another year comes to an end, and the curtains draws close on 2017, welcome to Volume 10, Issue 2 of skribble. The Igbo people

of nigeria have a saying, "The kitchen is the first place to smell the aroma of the meal being cooked". This wise saying resonated with me as I reflected on what to write, to give you an outlook of what to expect inside.

As is our tradition, this edition also centers around a theme, "Believe Again, The process is more important than the goal", inspired by our conviction that many people are at a crossroad in life, wondering what next, with the prevailing harsh economic and life challenges. As we know, each journey starts with just one footstep. A small seed sown by an article in a magazine, an interview that resonates with your own experience or

simply seeing an image that connects you to your dream and inspires you to believe again. That is why we and our carefully selected contributors share our experiences with readers, hoping to guide and inspired you into making the right decision where you are, at that cross road.

In this issue, we feature interesting interviews from two renowned people from diverse backgrounds. one a medical doctor of repute, Dr. Ebun Bamgboye, a Consultant Physician, with a special interest in nephrology (kidney medicine), and the other, an accomplished and celebrated actress, scriptwriter, director and producer omoni oboli. The young mothers-to-be, would learn a lot from our feature on pregancy that shows what to expect for every week of pregnancy from conception to birth. We also have "must read" articles from diverse contributors, while our regulars, like The Job street, Best Vacation spots in nigeria and abroad, Where Great Minds Meet are also featured.

there are many creative tools a designer uses to think differently, but none is more counter-intuitive than “wrong thinking,” also

called reverse thinking. Wrong thinking is when you intentionally think of the worst idea possible — the exact opposite of the accepted or logical solution, ideas that can get you laughed at or even fired — and work back from those to find new ways of solving old problems.

For example, one of the most important discoveries in the sequencing of the human genome came from Fred sanger who reversed his process to achieve a breakthrough. As explained by siddharta Mukerjee in his book The Gene, sanger

To Come Up with a Good Idea, Start by Imagining the Worst Idea PossibleBy Ayse Birsel

“turned his own strategy upside down and tried to build DnA, rather than break it down.” His wrong thinking led to his second nobel Prize in chemistry in 1980 for contributions in genetic sequencing.

The great Argentinian chef Francois Mallmann, featured on netflix’s documentary series Chef ’s table, left the comfort of his restaurants to cook in the wild in Patagonia, with no kitchen or sous chefs, traveling with a group of young novices who have little or no experience. He calls it “gypsy chefs,” a team that roams. His wrong thinking about what a chef does and how he does it has allowed Mallmann to create incredibly unique culinary experiences that could never happen in a traditional restaurant setting.

During my “Design the Work You Love” workshop, Mickey McManus, AutoDesk research fellow and Chairman of Maya Design, shared an experiment in reverse thinking that captured my imagination. McManus essentially switched roles with his intern Lisa Rotzinger — Lisa became the boss, and Mickey an “exit-level intern.” As Mickey explained it, “our role as a leader is to be the superhero, fly in and save the day. But the best thing you can do is serve other people. I thought, what if my role is that of the sidekick, getting obstacles out of their way and letting the superhero learn to fly.” When Lisa started at Autodesk, McManus gave her a sticky note with topics for her to research: Internet of Things (Iot), Machine Learning, and Generative Design. He told her that her task is to “discover things I don’t know” and left her to be her own boss for two weeks while he traveled. When he returned, her findings turned out to be much more provocative than either had expected. They applied her discoveries to an Autodesk research project called Primordial, and at McManus’s urging, it was Lisa who presented the project to 400 top executives and clients.

McManus’s reframing of leadership — the leader as the sidekick, the intern as the superhero — embodies three powerful principles that enable innovation and discovery.

1. BE thE BEgINNER.

A favorite koan from the zen master shunryu suzuki says, “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” Being the beginner shifts our perspective and, as the koan states, opens up our mind to possibilities. As a beginner, you listen more. You’re more inquisitive and interested in learning from everyone, including people who are younger or have less experience. We give ourselves permission to learn constantly. As Mickey found out, this humility pays off.

Lisa’s provocative insights, enabled by her newcomer’s perspective, opened up McManus’s mind to new ideas. He was inspired. McManus calls his new position the “exit-level intern,” rather than an entry-level one, someone who is there to learn like a novice even though they might have the most experience. to recognize how innovative this approach is, just imagine telling your intern or most junior employee that come Monday, you are their intern.

2. gRANt AgENcY.

Listening to people, rather than telling them what you think they need to do, gives others agency to investigate, apply their ideas, draw their own conclusions. What are the obstacles standing in the way of your team? Having a bird’s eye view (or in this case, a sidekick’s view) gives you the advantage of seeing roadblocks or challenges, while putting team members in the superhero role makes them agents to solve their own problems.

Dara Dotz is removing obstacles to rapid recovery in humanitarian disasters with her nGo, Field Ready. Rather than relying on slow, expensive supply chains to import disaster relief, Field Ready empowers people in disaster-struck areas with the technology and expertise to make life-saving and life-sustaining supplies onsite. to help disaster victims realize their own recovery, Field Ready teams begin by listening. suddenly the victim is the superhero and the designers

Mickey McManus

and engineers are the sidekick, collaborating together to find the best solutions. Empowering your team with agency allows everyone to offer solutions and innovate, just as McManus did with Lisa by listening to her findings, encouraging her involvement in the work and, eventually, giving her the spotlight to do the final presentation.

3. DO AwAY wIth hIERARchY.

The superhero-sidekick relationship Mickey set up with Lisa eliminated expected hierarchy. He had her sit next to the CEo, and enabled her to wander around and ask questions to everyone, including the CEo and the Cto. He asked her to teach him stuff, and had her give the big presentation at the end of the project. Mickey said, “Lisa nailed the presentation — 23-years-old, and she gave a presentation to 400 top executives, including our most important customers, that was riveting to watch.” When we allow those at the lowest rung of the career ladder to take on the superhero role, and step back ourselves to learn from them, the best ideas can rise to the top.

Lisa stayed for an extra semester of internship at Autodesk before going back to school. she has since graduated and is joining Autodesk full-time as a strategist. Mickey continues to be a superhero who acts as the sidekick, acknowledging what he doesn’t know and always learning along the way. Remember, the key to wrong thinking is coming up with a seemingly bad idea to challenge the status quo, pushing ourselves to imagine new and disruptive ideas, beyond our own preconceptions. When we give ourselves permission to have bad ideas, we often come up with the best ones.

“Our role as a leader is to be

the superhero, fly in and save the

day. But the best thing you can

do is serve other people...”

MANAGEMENT 101

We are living in the age where major part of our tasks and processes are now digitized.

The entire world is moving fast towards digitization. People want the information in the digital format. Therefore companies have also started recognizing the importance of adding digitization to their marketing procedures.

With the evolution of technology and social trends, it is essential for HR

brands to alter their strategies to adapt to digital environments and platforms. Although, it is difficult to predict the future, HR (Human Resource) professionals must be abreast of the trends to keep tabs on their ever-evolving trend-savvy consumers.

Marketing departments of majority of companies are hiring the digital marketing professionals to make their business reach the pinnacle of success in this age of digitization.

HR companies will need to start

making use of digital advances such as analytics, mobility, email automation as well as improving their use of traditional technologies, to change customer relationships, internal processes, HR processes and value propositions.

Digital marketing is now taking the place of the older marketing forms therefore slowly and gradually it is being noticed that traditional marketing forms are gradually disappearing.

Every business strives to grow faster by moving in on the trends of technology.

With the Building of an Effective digital arm of an organisation from the Ground Up series, I hope to provide an overview of the major stages and processes involved in evolving an existing business into a successful digital brand.

1 - Established HR businesses who presently operate in a purely offline capacity but are looking to fully go

digital...

2 - HR firms who already operate online but who are not experiencing the results they would hope for and are willing to make some changes.

Having established my aims with the above, it's time to get started:

Laying a proper plan to implement digital trends in your business will prove to be quite helpful. Here's how digital processes work:

There is more to digital marketing than just adding online channels as digital presence has proved to be advantageous for businesses, in the current scenario.

For HR firms preparing strongly for the digital future, it means developing digital capabilities in which the company’s activities, people, culture, and structure are aligned toward a set of organizational goals.

In Order to achieve this, HR Executives will need to digitally transform three key areas of their enterprises: customer experience, operational processes and business models in order to thrive in this competitive space.

Hitting The Ground Running

As an HR firm before jumping headfirst into digital creation it is essential to thoroughly consider the reasons why you're building an online presence and what you intend to gain from it. Also, it is important to fully establish a digital mindset within the environment.

Specific goals and aims must be established before anything else is done to ensure that all aspects of your website and online marketing are tailored to best serve the business and achieve your stipulated goals.

Adoption And communication Plan

Throughout the whole digital transformation process, the HR department or business must accompany and clearly inform their employees and partners about the importance of using the digital tools selected. The ideal is to lead by

example: if managers begin to use them, it will be easier for the rest of the employees to gradually start to use them too.

“Human resources stand to benefit greatly from digitization trends”.

Establish Budgets, RoI + KPIs

The next is to take a step further to get an in-house digital specialist. The recruitment and development of a full-fledged digital department within your organisation and the subsequent digital marketing processes will require capital. How much capital is dependent upon a vast number of variables; not to mention your available budget. At this stage the

services of a digital marketing agency are likely to be incredibly useful. These Digital marketing specialists are able to outline the website functionality you'll require to achieve your goals, the cost of website design, development and maintenance and the cost of SEO and other digital services to ensure success.

By consulting closely with a digital transformation agency (Businessplus Services) - or indeed utilising your own experience you will be able to establish two vital acronyms: ROI and KPIs.

The Return On Investment is essential - if you can't foresee an ROI which offers definite benefit to your company then it may be necessary to re-think your aims.

Any digital company worth their salt should be able to assist you in formulating and ultimately facilitate yOUR digital goals spanning from website development through to 12 months from kick-off period.

Learn From Your company’s Early Digital Adopters

After the establishment of your DIGITAL TEAM, they likely have valuable experience and best practices to share with other department to help your organisational culture grow digitally.

your Digital department can play a role in developing the overall digital enterprise strategy, organization, and culture if properly built and given necessary support to implement effective strategies to help your HR organisation OR HR Department.

With the evolution of

technology and social trends, it is essential for HR brands to alter

their strategies to adapt to digital environments and platforms

pREgNANcY fIRSt fOUR wEEKS: Did you know that your countdown to pregnancy starts before you conceive? This is because calculation of your expected due date needs to take into account the first day of the last menstrual cycle before conception. ovulation happens 14 days after your cycle starts. once ovulation happens and you try to get pregnant, your partner’s sperm would fertilize the mature egg released from the ovary. This fertilized egg then moves towards the fallopian tube and then to uterus where it gets implanted. once the embryo has implanted itself inside the uterus

A step-By-step Guide to What Happens During The 40 Weeks of Your Pregnancy.

Pregnancy is joyous and challenging both at the same time for a woman. The process of fetal development consists of a lot of stages. In fact, every week your baby reaches a new milestone while your body undergoes some essential changes. Here is what happens during the 40 weeks of your pregnancy:

and started to grow at full pace this marks the start of your motherhood.

pREgNANcY wEEK fIvE: Apart from the rising levels of estrogen and progesterone your body is now secreting more human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone. These hormones would now be responsible for most of your pregnancy niggles like morning sickness and aversion to certain smells. This week is also an important week for your baby as all the major organ developments take

place along with placenta. pREgNANcY wEEK SIx: There would be a gush of blood flow in your system to meet the demands of your body and that of the developing fetus. You might also have the urge for frequent urination as the

uterus presses against the bladder. Your baby’s heart would start to beat by this week and can be picked up in an ultrasound. Also, facial features start to develop this week onwards.

pREgNANcY wEEK SEvEN: Your breasts would be swollen and full by now, in preparation for the breastfeeding phase. now that a lot of hCG or human Chorionic Gonadotropin hormone is secreted in the body more food aversions, sensitivity to smell, fatigue and constipation can be expected. This week, the facial features of your baby become more distinct. Also, the hands and legs start to protrude out and the vital organs like the kidneys, liver, heart, intestine, pancreas and the appendix develop at an exponential pace.

pREgNANcY wEEK EIght: You could feel the discomforts of pregnancy even more this week while fetal development takes on at a faster pace. This week marks the stage when the embryo turns to become a fetus with distinct facial features, limbs protruding out from the body, with development of sexual organs and hardening of the skeletal system.

pREgNANcY wEEK NINE: This week onwards you would notice that you are gaining weight and for all good reasons. Your baby’s heart gets divided in to four chambers and is pumping blood rapidly. Also because of placental development your metabolism and hormonal levels might also increase.

pREgNANcY wEEK tEN: Your belly might be slightly bulging out though negligible at the moment and you might become slower with your pace of work, however be calm. As for your baby all the crucial organs of your baby have now been formed. The kidneys, lungs, heart, intestines and the brain are working in tandem and also developing and growing at a greater pace. Bones and cartilages are also forming, strengthening the skeletal system of the baby.

pREgNANcY wEEK ELEvEN: You would have gained a few kilos at least, despite the regular bouts of vomiting and nausea, and your belly will be protruding out a bit more than the previous week. Placental development happens rapidly with new blood cells being added to it. As for the baby, ovaries are formed in the female fetus and the testicles in the male. It is the stage at which the sex of the child can be determined. However, if you are in India, remember that this is illegal.

pREgNANcY wEEK twELvE: some of your pregnancy symptoms like fatigue, morning sickness, nausea will now take a backseat. But there can still be a possibility of suffering from heartburn and bouts of constipation. The baby’s own hormone production has kick-started which would eventually influence its growth and development. White blood cells are being produced in abundance in the fetus that would provide protection from infection once your baby is out in the world. Another important development of the week is the formation of the vocal cords in the neck area.

pREgNANcY wEEK thIRtEEN: Congratulations, you have completed your first trimester. Frequent urination will now be in check, but a new annoying symptom to surface would be vaginal discharge. This is the outcome of increased estrogen and blood flow in the pelvic area. The discharge keeps the balance of healthy bacteria in the vaginal area intact. Your baby’s intestine now is fully functional from this week onwards and the pancreas has also started to produce insulin. As the abdominal cavity grows the intestine too shifts its position in the abdomen.

pREgNANcY wEEK fOURtEEN: The worst of your pregnancy symptoms are definitely behind you, though acne and dark spots can make its presence felt on the face now. Your uterus has started to bulge pushing your tummy out. The facial features of your baby would be more developed this week allowing her to squint, grimace, frown and also suck her thumb! This week your baby gets a thin film of hair coating on her entire body and not just the head. This hair is called the lanugo and keeps your baby warm inside the womb.

pREgNANcY wEEK fIftEEN: Though there isn’t any significant change in terms of your physical appearance from what you looked the week before, but you might have gained a few kilos by now and probably started to feel a little heavier than usual. Your baby’s senses are also developing this week onwards. You can now gently pat your belly and talk to your baby. Your baby would also be sensitive to light now.

pREgNANcY wEEK SIxtEEN: Weight gain is in full swing this week onwards and you might have gained anywhere between two to five kilos. Your baby is also developing a thin layer of fat underneath the skin, which will act like an insulator to keep your baby warm and would also be playing with her first toy ever— the umbilical cord.

pREgNANcY wEEK SEvENtEEN:now that your baby-bump is showing and you are probably basking in the newfound joys of motherhood, you must know that medical checkups and sonographies are going to be a regular part of your life from now on. The most crucial development of the week is development of the fingerprints in your baby. This week fetal brain will take over control of heart functions, which will make her heartbeats and the pumping action more synchronized.

pREgNANcY wEEK EIghtEEN:With your belly protruding out, your centre of gravity now shifts slightly; this makes postural correction crucial at this point in time. Bad posture now can aggravate backache. Your baby’s nervous system grows rapidly from 18th weeks

onwards. The nerves in the brain are now making more complex connections and new ones are also being added in the process.

pREgNANcY wEEK NINEtEEN:As your uterus grows and bulges out, it continues to put a pressure on the ligaments that surround and support it leading to lower abdominal pains. The most recent development that happens this week for your baby is that her little scalp starts to produce her own hair.

pREgNANcY wEEK twENtY: now that you have left your morning sickness behind you, hunger pangs can get the better of you. But don’t indulge in the habit of eating for two. Whatever you eat make sure it is healthy and not junk food. This week onwards your baby’s ears are fully developed and functional. talking to your baby now is a good idea to initiate the mother and baby bonding process.

pREgNANcY wEEK twENtY-ONE: sometime this week your might notice your ankles and feet swell due to water retention leading to edema. It could be evident on your palms and fingers too. This isn’t a matter of concern and this harmless condition usually resolves soon after delivery. This week onwards, chances are your baby will also be able to taste the food that you are eating through amniotic fluid.

pREgNANcY wEEK twENtY-twO: Due to hormonal changes pigmentation and dark patches could show up on your face this week. on the other hand, Your baby’s liver secretes enzymes, from this week onwards. These enzymes help break down fetal red blood cells into bilirubin. This bilirubin then enters the mother’s blood stream through the placenta and is removed from the system through urine.

pREgNANcY wEEK twENtY-thREE: With your belly extruding out and the baby growing within your womb, your uterus pushes on your stomach which gives rise to some ugly stretch marks all over the abdomen. While you deal with the stretch marks on the outside, all the distinguishable facial features of your baby develops while the fetal-body is grows in proportion to her head. There are more fat cells being added beneath the skin to keep her warm.

pREgNANcY wEEK twENtY-fOUR: Yes you can experience Braxton Hicks contractions as early as week 24. This happens due to the tightening of the uterus muscles and subsides within no time. At this point of time, your baby’s lungs are forming small respiratory structures inside and also a surfactant that will help her breathe once outside the womb.

pREgNANcY wEEK twENtY-fIvE: The hormonal changes those are responsible for almost all the functions of the body during pregnancy, arrest hair fall during this stage. This is the reason why many pregnant women feel that their hair becomes lustrous and gains volume during pregnancy. Blood vessels start to develop in the lungs of your fetus bringing them a litter closer to maturity. Apart from this, your baby’s nostrils open to help breathe in air. since there is no air inside the womb, your baby will be breathing in amniotic fluid, which turns to be a good practice for breathing after birth.

pREgNANcY wEEK twENtY-SIx:Remember it is common to experience headaches, hand and feet pain, chest pain, lower back, pelvic and back aches during pregnancy. You might experience some of these symptoms during this week. Your baby’s eyelids that had been closed for the past few months, so the retina can develop fully to help focus, now starts to open, however the irises are still in the stage of development.

pREgNANcY wEEK twENtY-SEvEN: As you approach your due date, you may experience excessive hunger. This is quite obvious as your body is craving for more energy and needs the right nutrients for proper growth and development of your baby. But be sure that you don’t overeat. This week your baby’s brain development takes an upward step, as new brain tissues would be added. Many experts believe that babies might also begin to dream from this week.

pREgNANcY wEEK twENtY-EIght: You might experience a surge in fetal movements during this week. This is the normal progression of your pregnancy. If fetal movements are at its peak during the nights it could again disrupt your sleep. This week onwards your baby is going to gain

weight consistently till labour. Most babies will take a head-down position by this week to prepare for labour. However, if your sonography shows that your baby is still in the transverse or breech position there is no need to worry, as there is still time for your baby to turn in to the right position.

pREgNANcY wEEK twENtY-NINE: The infamous hormonal surges can now result in mood swings that can be very disturbing for both, you and your loved ones. You might feel fatigued too often as you have gained enough weight (around 10 kg or more), which can further dampen your spirits. This week your baby will be moving more, nudging you with its elbows and palms, apart from stretching its limbs inside the womb. However, as you near labour, these movements will become less due to lack of space in the womb.

pREgNANcY wEEK thIRtY: Your breasts can leak more often and frequently at this point in time. Your baby’s bone marrows have started to produce red blood cells now. This is a milestone that your baby will attain this week. This also indicates that if you go into labour anytime soon, your baby will be able to thrive on its own.

pREgNANcY wEEK thIRtY-ONE: As the bulging uterus exerts pressure on the bladder, not only will you feel a frequent urge for urination but might also leak while you cough, sneeze or laugh out loud. An essential development that happens in your baby this week is the development of finger and toe nails.

pREgNANcY wEEK thIRtY-twO: You would be gaining up to 500 g each week from now onward till the time you hit labour. In a healthy pregnancy, you can gain anywhere between 1 to 2 kg every month during your third trimester. At 32 weeks most babies will turn to the heads-down position, which means that the head of the baby is resting on the bottom of the uterus.

pREgNANcY wEEK thIRtY-thREE: It is common to experience sleepless nights during the third trimester. The bulging belly, excess weight, increased fetal movements, fatigue, among others, makes it difficult to sleep for hours at a stretch in a comfortable position. At this point in time your baby’s immune system is developing and receiving antibodies from you, which will help ward-off infections once your baby is out of the womb.

pREgNANcY wEEK thIRtY-fOUR: Many women complain of blurry vision during this time due to the hormonal changes happening inside the body. However, this vision problem is temporary and will settle post delivery without much trouble. Your entire baby’s crucial organs are developed and are functioning on their own now, except the lungs. The lungs become fully functional when your baby is delivered and breathes in a gush of fresh air.

pREgNANcY wEEK thIRtY-fIvE: Your belly is still extending and stretching

itself outward, as your baby keeps on putting on more weight and increases in length. now your uterus is about six inches above your belly button, which would be very sensitive to touch. Your baby’s liver and kidneys are fully mature and functioning on their own excreting waste. You might feel more fetal kicks now as there is less space for your baby to move around.

pREgNANcY wEEK thIRtY-SIx: now that you are approaching full-term pregnancy, your uterus would be stretched and you might have gained

anywhere between 10 to 12 kg throughout these months. All the other bones and cartilage gets stronger in your baby with each passing day, but the skull remains soft to initiate a smooth vaginal birth during labour. However, this doesn’t mean that the other bones become hard and rigid. They are still flexible to help your baby squeeze itself out through the vaginal opening.

pREgNANcY wEEK thIRtY-SEvEN: now that your baby is in the labour-ready position with its head resting on the pelvic floor, you might feel more pressure and pain in that area. As you approach the due date, your baby keeps practicing breathing techniques by inhaling and exhaling amniotic fluid through the nostrils.

pREgNANcY wEEK thIRtY-EIght: An increased vaginal discharge during this time is normal which indicates that your cervix is dilating and preparing for the labour. Hair covering your baby’s overall body sheds now and your baby keeps on piling some weight. This makes your baby plumper and the skin smooth.

pREgNANcY wEEK thIRtY-NINE: If you haven’t experienced false contractions or Braxton Hicks yet, you might feel them this time around. However, you should be able to differentiate false contractions from

Skribble | Vol. 10 | Issue 2 | 2017 Skribble | Vol. 10 | Issue 2 | 2017

signs of preterm labour. These last few days, your baby gets enough fat deposited beneath the skin, which adds to the weight gain process and also helps to keep the temperature in control.

pREgNANcY wEEK fORtY: This week expect yourself to be wheeled into the labour room. This will be the highlight of your 40th week (in case it happens on time). However, be watchful of your labour symptoms. In some cases, the labour starts with a dull backache. If labour sets in on time this week you will be able to hold your bundle of joy in your arms. At birth your baby might weigh anywhere between 2.5 to 3.5 kg and even more. Congratulations you are blessed with your baby.

obviously the nigerian situation is terrible. Many say it has never been this bad.

Each day competes with the previous on how bad it can get. Very overwhelming and the light at the end of the tunnel is so far, it is nothing but sheer hope.

obviously people are reacting to this. Virtually all my friends(thou knowest thyselves) have left the country or are on the verge of leaving. My good friends have been telling me about the various ways I can port safely and without

spending much. some are so concerned that we the 'left behind' should not be swindled in our bid to join them.

The effort is touching, their concerns commendable. of course the pressure both from within and outside the country was beginning to tell.

That was until I met this man, a white man, 'oyinbo' in his early 40s who DARED to resign from a high flying and high paying job with lots of potentials to come and establish a FARM in nigeria.

What could have made him do that? I was blown away. Guy was doing well(had received awards in 2014 and 2015) and was on his way to another promotion. The only way onwards was up. so why farm? And in nigeria?...

More shocking is that the man went through hell before he could set up the farm, went through another form of hell to access funds to run the farm and is going through an updated version of hell in managing the farm itself.

But.

The commitment to the project is tremendous. The passion is amazing. He talks about nigeria as if it is not my home, not my country he is talking about.

The sheer belief in the project, in the country's potentials is humbling. And it was not just the motivational rah rah that takes you up and slams you right back not long after stuff. Guy will listen to all your 'intelligent' speeches about how misguided he was, he will take all your 'advices' into consideration patiently and then will answer you in a way that will utterly convince you that he has given a lot of thought to all your concerns. not that he cannot see them, but the fact that he can see them means he can counter them, or as we say, can mitigate.

During one of the 'attempt to convince' sessions, something suddenly dawned on me.

Maybe the guy has a nervous breakdown. After all, bagging back to back awards in a challenging industry must have come as a result of serious hard work. It must have been brutal. And I have read somewhere that people can burnout and simply unravel under such pressure. Maybe the guy is just unraveling.

He apparently read my mind( or saw it on my face), for he then whipped out his iPad and showed me output figures for one year. Gross and net income.

Then I HAD a brain freeze! My mind suddenly stopped. When my mind started working, the first thought that came out was that the figures were cooked up ni jare. How can? He apparently read that too and reliably informed that he still had one site he was yet to add. This he said is because the output from that site beat all expectations(like all the other sites, by the way) by impossible figures. so HE

is wondering if his staff cooked the figures.

It has been long since a passionately held idea and opinion had been so challenged. never in my adult life anyway. And never so starkly. never had hard figures spoken up so much for a man's position. I realized that countering this would be just emotional, childishly emotional

Just as convinced as those who are still fleeing the country I can

honestly not see as bad anymore. He showed me

Nigeria through a new pair of

lens.

But I made a last stab. Maybe it is because he is privileged. After all he is a white man who had risen so high in his industry, he had access to funds definitely; maybe it is because he is enlightened and made efforts to study the environment, maybe he is just lucky, maybe, maybe..

Fortunately I didnt say this out loud. Every excuse that ran through my head fell flat in the face of what I had seen. It was too empirical.

no wonder he is so convinced. Just as convinced as those who are still fleeing the country I can honestly not see as bad anymore. He showed me nigeria through a new pair of lens. Almost like seeing for the very first time.

A concerned friend on the outside still has a phone appointment with me today that I will still keep. But the interest is not so strong anymore.

This man changed my lens. Even the day seems brighter.

But what is it with the way we view things anyway? How come it affects so much what we actually see?

Cheers

Thank you for this opportunity to interview you?

Thanks you for having me Who is Omoni Oboli? Family background? Educational background? Professional background?

I'm the second of two girls born to my parents. I was raised by my mum and my memorable growing up days were in Delta steel Company (DsC) complex, Aladja, where my mum worked as a teacher at the elementary school. I graduated from the university of Benin from the foreign languages department, majoring in French. I first got into the movie industry in 1996, when a group of my friends had come to Lagos and done some acting in the then budding "Home Video" industry (now nollywood). I couldn't wait to go to Lagos with them the next time they went. I started that same year with some "waka pass" roles, and then got the part of Liz Benson's maid in the movie, sHAME, playing also alongside Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD). I then played three lead roles after that in Fidelis Duker's not MY WILL and DEstInED to DIE, and Hilda Dokuboh's AnotHER CAMPUs

moni Oboli is a Nigerian actress, scriptwriter, director and producer and a trained digital filmmaker at the New york Film Academy. She is also a writer, with a number of screenplays to her credit, including Fatal Imagination, Being Mrs. Elliott, The First Lady, Wives on Strike. In 2010, she won the award for Best Actress Narrative Feature at the Los Angeles Movie Awards, and the award for Best Actress at the Harlem International Film Festival. Omoni was nominated for the Best Actress in a Leading Role award at the 2011 Africa Movie Academy Awards.

In 2014, she won Big Screen Actress of the year award, at the 2014 ELOy Awards, for her movie Being Mrs. Elliott. In 2015, Omoni was awarded the Sun Nollywood personality of the year and has also shown her ability as a movie director with movies such as Being Mrs. Elliott, The First Lady, Wives on Strike, and most recently Okafor's Law.

tALE. I left the industry for about 10 years and then returned as the 'new girl', starting all over again to make my way to the top. I have since become a writer, producer and director of four movies that I've released at the cinemas

How long have you been acting? How did you get involved in Acting? Where did you get started?

I've been acting since I was three, in a church play, so to me, it's been my whole life. I was president of the Literary and Debating society and the French Club where I wrote, produced, directed and acted in the school plays which were shown to the parents as well in French and English. As I mentioned earlier, my friends who had come to Lagos introduced me to the producers and directors whom they met at their first visit, and this opened up the doors to my acting career. obi osotule, Fred Amata, Keppy Ekpenyong Bassey, opa Williams and some others helped to give me the opportunity to show what I had then. The three lead roles I got after a short time in the same year I first started says it all about the confidence they had in my acting skill. Coming back to the industry after several years away wasn't easy. All the major players were not as involved

as they were in 1996, and so I struggled at first to get back in. Thank God for the likes of Emem Isong Misodi, and Lancelot odua Imasuen (who was the only one I knew from back in the day, because he had directed me in movies then) who helped me get the roles that brought me back into the industry.

What has been your most challenging role(s) and how did you overcome it/them?

Every role has been challenging because you have to take on a character that isn't you and make it believable to the audience. nevertheless, my role in Lonzo nzekwe's AnCHoR BABY was emotionally challenging, while my role in Desmond ovbiagele's REnDER to CAEsAR was physical challenges. The most difficult for me would be my own movies because I had to wear many hats as producer, director and actor. It's not easy combining all those roles and still trying to make good movies with high production values. I always say that it's the most difficult job in the world.

How easy is it to get into a character especially a challenging one?

It's not easy at all. The love for mimicking different characters and the attention to detail helps to bring out the best rendition of a character in any role. Passion is what drives me. I'm passionate about acting and I want to show who the person (character) truly is without letting omoni get in the way. Like I said, it's not easy, and there's no one-size-fits-all, but we try to make each one work. Getting to play a man in MY WIFE AnD I was not a walk in the park at all.

Are you working on any current projects?

Yes I am. I'm in different stages of production for some movies and a series. My movie WIVEs on stRIKE...tHE REVoLUtIon will be released later this year.

What is your dream role? And how soon do you think this will be actualized?

Every role is a dream role for me because I love to act, but if I had to pick I would say my dream role is one that I would produce and direct, and then it goes on to make a global impact by winning an Academy Award. Apart from that, I would love to star in a huge budget hollywood movie, just to

see how they put it all together.

How can you compare Nollywood to Hollywood in terms of professionalism and profitability?

Hollywood is old and established, while nollywood has just begun in comparison. Professionalism always follows good enumeration; so when we increase our budget in movie, we will see an upsurge of more professional hands. Right now, we've grown professionally in many areas of movie making than when we first started, and that is due to the higher returns on investment (RoI) from cinemas and alternate sales and distribution vendors. With more investment in movie theatres and distribution channels we will see the numbers for RoIs increase, and that would mean an increase in professionalism (whcih is rightly putting the horse before the cart). It's not likely we will get to hollywood standards with the fewer movie theatres we currently possess

to sell our movies and make a profit. Profit drives professionalism! We are trying a lot with the little we have, and we've seen many professionals (including myself ) improve themselves by taking professional courses so that we don't keep doing the same things with the old thought processes. With the increase in distribution channels we can increase our dominance at least in the African continent first, before we take on the world.

Can you compare the Nigerian movie industry from where you started and now?

oh, its grown in leaps and bounds since then. Can you imagine us being officially selected at such a high level film festival as the toronto International Film Festival (tIFF)? We were! That wasn't possible back then or even considered. The production value of our movies from even just five years ago has grown tremendously, and this shows that the industry has indeed stepped on the

right track headed in the right direction. Many new players who looked down on the industry are now financiers of movie projects and other aspects of movie business just because of how far we've come. Many of us didn't think we would get this far in our lifetime, but there's something about being persistent in doing what you love, increasing your knowledge in it, and putting your money where your heart and mouth is that brings increase and growth even when you're not expecting it.

A lot of world class exportable productions are coming out of Nollywood, how do you think this has helped the Nigerian movie industry growth? And the Nigerian economy?

It has helped attract more money (investments) into the industry which has helped increase the number of professionals working in the industry, so employment is created. The nigerian economy is the better for it, and our image in the international community has seen more positive growth

with each movie breakthrough. This is without a doubt, one of our biggest exports, and we don't have too many things to boast of as true homegrown exports to the rest of the world. nollywood has opened doors to recognition that we only dreamed about globally, so that we are at World Economic Forums and many platforms, because recognition is one of the ways to break the ice when appealing to international communities. This is true for all of entertainment, especially in the last 10 years. nollywood, due to the high number of people it takes to make a movie, even a movie with just two persons, helps stem the tide of unemployment in nigeria. Please tell us about the Nigerian Movie Industry, do you feel it is in a healthy condition? What improvements and advice can you proffer?

The industry is growing every year and with such growth there's bound to be teething problems. It's like going through puberty,

we make some mistakes, but we don't let those mistakes define us or mar us for life. The DVD distribution channel was the first to collapse due to piracy and an inefficient system that needed restructuring and protection. We need to have the government see the revenue potential of the industry, take deliberate steps to curb the problem, with the clear understanding and road map to its ultimate explosion as a major export of nigeria. Individually, we can't fight the menace of piracy, that's why we need the government to step in hard to ensure that we begin to see higher returns on investment, which drives high employment rate and more growth in the production value of our movies for better export. The passion is already there, so the government does not need to entice people to work in the industry, but when the right policies are visibly implemented, without relenting, we will see an explosion in the industry that nigeria hasn't yet begun to imagine.

What is your philosophy about life?

Love God, and love people! Without the love of God, the love of people would be purposeless and difficult, and without the love of people, you can't claim to truly love God. We're all accountable to God, and whatever I do, I'm aware of my responsibility to those who are constantly watching me. I can't help it when I slip occasionally, since I'm only human, and flawed by nature, but I can work towards making sure my slip ups are far less than my positive actions. I also believe that when something needs to be done, you don't complain, but just do it; so I always say "you've got to do what you've got to do".

What is your advice for those who have given up their life dreams, goals and aspiration? (Going in line with the theme for this edition of scribble which is Believe Again: ‘The process is more important than the goal’ )

If you've given up on your life's dreams, then help someone else with theirs. It may give you purpose till you find yours. no one can get you out of your low point in life but God. some people are successful financially, but they don't feel that way because they are not successful in what they truly love to do, and they should ask themselves how much did they take as salaries (bribes) to derail them from their own dreams. The same should be asked of those who are downcast, feeling like they don't have anything more to give towards their dreams; "how many knock downs did they pay you to keep you down long enough to stop your dream?" The mountain climb was never promised to be smooth and easy. The only thing promised is that when you get to the top you will have that experience, sense of fulfilment and joy that no one else can give you. You got there because you were willing to put in the necessary work and sacrifice to achieve it. I didn't get here by chance; it was God's doing, along with a persistent attitude, and listening to those who wanted it for me too. That's what helped me get there. so I'm asking you today to fight for it. Don't hate those who tear down your resolve, because without them your wings would be too weak to sustain the entire flight through the journey of your success. They are the ones who make you believe you really want it. If the first sign of opposition drives you away, then you didn't want it badly, and the one who made you draw back may have saved you from the fire that success is sure to bring your way. Appreciate friends and people who genuinely want to help and don't let their

criticisms mean to you that they don't want you to succeed. A larvae doesn't become a butterfly without a struggle.

What is your advice for upcoming actors/actresses?

Be passionate! take every part you're given and perform like that would be your last It may be your last role in any movie, or it may only be your last small role, but give it your best. Don't seat with those who are scornful, but give your ear and heart to people who add value to your craft. The naysayers are always talking about someone else but you, so you're not improving with their council.

no one grumbles his/her way to success, and your value is not defined by what you're paid for a role, but by what the audience thinks of your performance. When the audience love your performance, you will have value in the eyes of any producer. I love the story of Hilary swank, who won an oscar for her role in Boys Don't Cry, which she was paid less than $5000, and that's all she made for the entire year, but look at her now! Your time will not pass you by, so be patient and give your best.

Thank you for this opportunity?

Thank you

what Is That In Your hand?Discovering Purpose

The book compels an inquiry into why one was created, to what end and for what purposes? And the conclusion that what one has in one's hand is

probably the clearest indicator of one's purpose on earth. The author approaches these difficult issues with what has become his characteristic- sound reasoning, in simple, accessible language. While a remarkable understanding of scripture is possibly his greatest strength, the great achievement of this book is the powerful presentation of scriptural truth in a manner that is eminently useful to the reader.

The book is a worthwhile enterprise indeed and I commend it to all.

okay girl! You need to calm down, take a deep breath and count your blessings once again.

As much as I love my job, there are times when I feel bored. It can be a routine sometimes, hence my endless certifications roaming the world of HR! Where next do I move? I have shifted from routine HR to specialization in Payroll, Learning and Development to Performance Management, etc, etc, etc.

I am beginning to feel my present job become boring, same routine month in, month out. I had a discussion with my supervisor a week ago about some sort of Job enrichment, enlargement or rotation which

shouldn't Einstein have learned a lesson from his own critics? Was he no longer the super thinker? shouldn't he have mastered the art of being right (in physics at

least)? Well, that's not exactly how ideas work. Ideas are divine, and knowledge about our universe are revelations of divine laws. This applies to many other kinds of ideas. nobody masters knowing the ones that will fail. Although some ideas will surely fail, it is usually not in our place to decide which.

Analogy of the floating pen:

If you held a pen in the air and left it hoping it would float forever, under normal earthly circumstances, we have learned to think that this will not work 100% of the time. The laws just do not permit it. However, we also know that the laws can be applied to create a situation where the pen would indeed float midair. now, how do we determine just how far these laws could be tweaked? How can we determine the limits to how far these

laws can be manipulated.

since no one actually understands everything about the universe, no one can ascertain the boundaries of possibilities. We can only know some of the ways things may be achieved, not all. In fact, there are so many possibilities that it is wiser to assume that a pen can float midair without much effort. Certainty is so much beyond us that we are only permitted to be certain of our uncertainty.

whAt thIS mEANS fOR YOUR OwN IDEA:

● s o m e r e a l l y s m a r t e x p e r t s w i l l disapprove of your brilliant idea. It doesn't make them unreasonable... It just makes them not you. The best of us are confused many of the times.

● The fact that one is so sure something wouldn't work doesn't mean it wouldn't. We have to be careful to not believe we have mastered the art of feasibility.

● You have to love your idea for the sake of its being, waiting for approval may not always work out. Live your dreams every time you envision them.

It is important to note that just as people being against your idea doesn't mean it wouldn't work, you being dead sure of your idea doesn't mean it would work. The only idea you're right of judging is yours. Do that often. But remember that trying is what really does the trick because humans are not capable of computing all the factors involved in making things work. We use mathematics as a guide to test theory, but the physical world may have more variables to compute than a math equation. We must then rely on trial and error which is yet by far the most generally effective mode of enquiry.

values; these makes the required skill set different from other organizations. I admit that there are general skill sets required for each job role and specifications, but for any employee to thrive in an organisation the law of the 4Ps must be adhered to strictly! okay now am speaking HR Jargon, my bad!Let me break it down; the 4ps according to Holloways rule (that’s me by the way) are Personality, Principle, Policy and Politics. As an employee you must understand your personality type, have strong principles which are the foundation of your work ethics, understand the employers policies and be able to tow political lines which exist in that organisation.

A good understanding of these principles has helped me stay relevant and productive in my various places of primary assignment. so after taking the acidic test of changing jobs; I realized I had used up all of my 4Ps and needed a change as soon as possible.

It was while debating with myself on the next step to take that I was contacted about this new job offer. It looked like all I could ever wish for, promising next level and rapid career development, humm If only I knew!two months into the job, I felt I had settled down, the changes in my life style had become apparent and I was having a blast until the eclipse. It was not just a partial but full eclipse, all became dark and wary.

It all started as a bright Monday morning, we had just concluded the weekly Management Meeting when I was asked to wait behind and assigned the task of filling five vacancies; these positions were presently being occupied by colleagues who were in the same meeting with us few minutes ago. I was stupefied! to say the least; I asked if they had indicted any intention to resign. Then came the shocker of my life’’ we do not wait until staff resign before we advertise their positions here’’ my direct boss responded. ’’ I do not like their faces anymore and want them replaced before the end of the month’’

I went back to my work station to digest the information I had just received; what is

going on here??? At that moment I realized that the euphoria of changing jobs with lots of perks and benefits had made be commit the biggest blunder of ALL!!!

I did not research my employer’s employee relations, engagement and relationship management

ratings, I was in for it! I panicked and began to make quick calls to colleagues in the industry and the response was ’’ah! How did you get yourself into that organisation? They use and dump people there oo!’’

I made further calls and realized that some of my known colleagues in the industry were earlier contacted for the same job role but turned it down because of management-staff relations issues the organization had in the past with ex-staff.

The love of money is truly the root of all evils! I was blinded by my aspirations and made a leap into burning fiery furnace of fire, thinking I made a leap of gold! What have I gotten myself into? Where do I start from now?

I cannot possibly go back to my former employer whose plea to renegotiate with me after I informed them of my intentions to exit the organisation fell on deaf ears.

I was asked

Thank you so much for this opportunity to allow us know more about you.

Thank you too for having me.

Can you please tell us a bit about yourself ? Family background? Educational background?

I'm from a family of 6, the 2nd of four siblings, born, grew up and schooled in Lagos, until I went off to university in Abia state. I studied Education-Economics, but I had ALWAYs wanted to be this- An Actor and here I am.

How long have you been acting? From where did you get started?

About 14 years now professionally for television, film and stage. Before then I was part of a theatre group in University called Ivory tower Theatre. We staged at least two stage plays a semester and I was deeply involved, from various arms, as an actor, costume designer, dancer, singer, props manager. It was the most riveting and exciting activities for me throughout university. Then I auditioned for my first role for a tV series, bagged it and it's been a long Up, down, in, out, great, small, mighty, 14 years since then. soon after I started, I went on to work with BBC World service trust, MnEt south Africa, Mnet nigeria, and so many other production companies up until now. How easy is it to get into a character especially a challenging one?

I don't ever find it hard or impossible, even when I'm not in the right frame of mind or emotion. Because for me to already be on set and at the point of getting into character, I must have read the script I'm about to play out long before, and I already know what is required of and for the character, so it's action time. one has to always give their best, regardless of the odds that be. For tv and film, we get the chance to do it over and again, just to get it all right, but for stage/theatre, it's instant and in real time, you better bring it! sometimes, when I'm playing alongside an actor who might not be bringing the best especially when it's a two man scene, I still don't lower my powres to make anyone look good, you better come and meet me up where I'm at or even higher.

What is/are your best fragrance(s)

I like fragrances but my favourites are L'acqua Rossa by Fendi, Ricci Ricci by nina Ricci, Black orchid by tom Ford, Gucci By Gucci by Gucci and sí by Giorgio Armani Which book(s) do you like best?

Everyone have people they admire, can you tell us who/those you admire most?

My Mum; she has supported me all through my life. I also admire great actresses especially Charlize Theron & Meryl streep.

Who is your mentor?

I don’t have just one mentor but three (3) (smiling) my Lord and saviour Jesus Christ, my pastor

AFRICAN TRIBES AND PEOPLEAFRICAN TRIBES AND PEOPLE32 | | 33

While there have been some controversy in India in recent years due to a string of racist and fatal

targeting African immigrants living in the country, few Indians know that Africans and Indians are no strangers to each other: there are at least 20,000 of an African-origin ethnic tribe who have been living in near total obscurity in India for centuries.

Isolated and reclusive, siddis are mostly confined to small pockets of villages in the Indian states of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat, and the city of Hyderabad (there’s also a sizable population in Pakistan). Descendants of Bantu people of East Africa, siddi ancestors were largely brought to India as slaves by Arabs as early as the 7th Century, followed by the Portuguese and

the British later on. others were free people who came to India as merchants, sailors and mercenaries before the Portuguese slave trade went into overdrive. When slavery was abolished in the 18th and 19th Centuries, siddis fled into the country’s thick jungles, fearing recapture and torture.

These African slaves were originally known as Habshis, which is Persian for Abyssinian (the former name of Ethiopia was Abyssinia). But those who rose through the ranks of royal retinue were honoured

with the title siddi, a possible etymon from the Arabic word for master, sayed/sayyid. It is not entirely clear when the use of the term Habshi declined and siddi replaced it, but

today, siddi describes all people of African descent in India.

When slavery was abolished, siddis fled into the dense forests of Karnataka (Credit: neelima Vallangi)

As I journeyed deep into the belt of lush jungles that are part of the Western Ghats, a Unesco world heritage site that runs along India’s western coast, I was excited to delve into an obscure legacy lost in the pages of Indian history. Deeper and deeper we drove on the desolate roads in the remarkable wilderness of the Uttara Kannada district, which is home to hornbills and black panthers, swirling up a trail of dust in our wake. Finally, we arrived at the spartan agricultural village of Gadgera, part of the cluster of siddi settlements in the state of Karnataka.

From a distance, nothing seemed African about the village or its dwellers. Enthusiastic greetings were exchanged between Pascal, our siddi guide, and the villagers in Konkani, a local language that’s spoken in a few areas along the west coast. Women were draped in colourful saris and the men looked like farmers from any Indian village. It was a little girl’s braided cornrows that first gave things away. And then, we couldn’t miss the curly hair and facial features that were markedly different from the south Indian people.

We were invited to an impromptu dance performance. Annie, a slender woman with a bindi on her forehead, and Manjula, a vivacious lady with beaming smile, busted out energetic African moves. The ladies stamped, whirled and twisted their arms to the rhythmic sound of a frenetic drumbeat while the rest of the villagers belted out Konkani folk songs. The excitement was

palpable inside the cramped room with a packed audience. In that moment, the ocean between Africa and India had vanished.

Enthusiastic as she was, Manjula then

Harnodkar and Kamrekar, are typical of the Konkan region they are now part of.

Although they still look African, siddis have completely and wonderfully assimilated Indian culture, traditions and language. They are Indian citizens but often the rest of India has a hard time believing they are so.

dragged us to a corner to be photographed. not only did she have the brightest smile, but she also had the most Indian name of all the siddis we met. The others had exotic and atypical first names like natal, Celestia, shobina and Romanchana – quite possibly handed down as a legacy from the Portuguese from whom they fled. Their last names, on the other hand, such as

WHAt Is YoUR stoRY? It’s time to believe again.By olateju Joseph

I don’t claim to know your story, nor can I attempt to understand where you have been, or what you may be going through right now. But, it is oK to be anxious,

afraid or feel completely inadequate or feel like you're a failure or at a crossroad, not knowing which way to turn. I have been through all those and more, mostly self inflicted in my own case.

You see, crossroads are great opportunities for growth, experience and learning. Unfortunately, while there, everyone has an opinion of what you should do. While they mean well,

you're the one to make the choice. so, just JUMP. And if things don't work out the way you expect, it's okay to make a bend, to take a new turn and just keep moving.

I posit with all conviction that man is not the creature of circumstances; circumstances are the creation of men. Every Man is the principal architect of his own destiny, driven by the choices we make. You must be focused on what you want out of life. You can be anything you want to be, and it is never too late to start cultivating the right attitude to life and living. You are not disadvantaged,

regardless of your background or what you’ve been through. It is a matter of what you think of and accept for yourself.

Many people have blamed their situation on environmental factors of

consequences that result in our destiny. It is therefore critical that we make such choices guided by the right attitude to life and living.

Please note that I am not trivialising the significant challenges some may

we usually do not get a second chance for most opportunities that come our way, and therefore end up living with the "What If..." for the rest of our life. And no matter how tough or dark or impossible the situation appears to be now, I urge you never to give up. Life can be likened to boxing, you are not defeated when you are knocked down, you are defeated when you stay down. Did you notice that the moment the match is won all attention shifts to the winner, even if you were the underdog just before the win? Do not compare your progress with others, because each persons race and I dare say lane on the track is different.

Quoting Sir Richard Branson, “Don’t waste your human talents by stressing about nominal things, or that which you cannot change. If you take the time simply to be and appreciate the fruits of life, your stresses will begin to dissolve, and you will be happier.”

upbringing (neighborhood and family) or some traumatic event or dislocation in their life journey. Research has proven however, that all those factors mentioned (which is made up of what happens to us), only account for about 10% of how our life turns out, while how we react to the 10% determines the true outcomes of our life, the 90%. What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us in life. For example, loss of a benefactor, like a parent when too young to fend for oneself, or being wrongly accused of an act that leads to one being relived of a job, or being involved in some accident that leads to loss of parts of the body or even death of another. significant as these are, they only account for about 10% of how one’s life would turn out. How such a person react to these situations is what truly results in the quality of life after. This shows that we have 90% control of the outcome of life, from the choices we make. Those choices all have

have passed through or perhaps even still living with, the truth though is that nothing would change until one faces the reality of their circumstance and use that to forge ahead with a better plan, followed by actionable steps. The following extract from a recent post by Alex okoh brings this point home succinctly: -

“The response is always yours and the response determines how you quickly recover so you can free your mind from the negative event, to think positively of a solution. I was aided in this process when I remembered what someone had said, "spending today complaining about yesterday won't make tomorrow any better".”

to ”Desire" something is not enough. You have to take”Action" on that desire also. I don’t know what your dreams or desires are, but I want to encourage you today to take that step forward when you get the chance to fulfill them. In life,

What do you call a dog that does magic tricks?A labracadabrador.

Wife says to her programmer husband, "Go to the store and buy a loaf of bread. If they have eggs, buy a dozen."

Husband returns with 12 loaves of bread.

A child asked his father, "How were people born?" so his father said, "Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became

adults and made babies, and so on." The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, "We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now." The child ran back to his father and said, "You lied to me!" His father replied, "no, your mom was talking about her side of the family."

There was an elderly couple who in their old age noticed that they were getting a lot more forgetful, so they decided to go

to the doctor. The doctor told them that they should start writing things down so they don't forget. They went home and the old lady told her husband to get her a bowl of ice cream. "You might want to write it down," she said. The husband said, "no, I can remember that you want a bowl of ice cream." she then told her husband she wanted a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream. "Write it down," she told him, and again he said, "no, no, I can remember: you want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream." Then the old lady said she wants a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top. "Write it down," she told her husband and again he said, "no, I got it. You want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top." so he goes to get the ice cream and spends an unusually long time in the kitchen, over 30 minutes. He comes out to his wife and hands her a plate of eggs and bacon. The old wife stares at the plate for a moment, then looks at her husband and asks, "Where's the toast?"

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources officer asks a young engineer fresh out of the Massachusetts Institute

of technology, "And what starting salary are you looking for?" The engineer replies, "In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package." The interviewer inquires, "Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?" The engineer sits up straight and says, "Wow! Are you kidding?" The interviewer replies, "Yeah, but you started it."

A thief stuck a pistol in a man's ribs and said, "Give me your money." The gentleman, shocked by the sudden attack, said,

"You cannot do this, I'm a senator!" The thief replied, "In that case, give me MY money!"

today I found a friend

who knew everything I felt

she knew my weakness

and the problems I've been dealt.

she understood my wonders

and listened to my dreams,

she listened to how I felt about life and love

and knew what it all means.

not once did she interrupt me

or tell me I was wrong

she understood what I was going through

and promised she'd stay long.

I reached out to this friend,

to show her that I care

to pull her close and let her know

how much I need her there.

I went to hold her hand

to pull her a bit nearer

and I realized this perfect friend I found

was nothing but a mirror.

valuedHave you ever thought of how others perceive you? Do you feel valued or undervalued? In life you will experience both added with bouts of disappointments. In this formula values start with you. Have you determined what ticks you off and what inspires you? What is most important to you in life? It could be man, money or material to put it mildly but no less than 3 things should be your core values or at least represent some level or degree of essence to you. By nature having good core values helps you believe again and sets you on a good path.

EngagedFinally to wrap up my ‘Believe Again Formula’ is to try as much as possible to stay engaged all the time. nothing happens with stagnancy you just have to keep going looking forward and not backward. Keeping busy is a clear sign of wanting things to happen for you simply because you believe you can do it. stay connected with others, maintain a networking group or groups. Whatever you do:

what does believe mean to you?

Do you particularly believe in yourself, who you are, your woth and where you are going? sounds

strange to ask but they are serious reality checks that tend to go by very often for man in a non-challant manner. As we go about daily living we cultivate relationships along the way to help us accomplish one goal or objective after the other. It takes being assertive, determined and optimism to always believe in what you do. Every-day they say is not Christmas some are a smooth ride others a little bumpy while some can even be a roller coaster journey, the trick is to main on board weather the storm, rain, wind and sunshine as it comes along. Every day for you should be an opportunity to continue to believe again. some people may inspire you to lift yourself up just by their attitude, actions, words, behavior or even their simple approachable style. Interestingly you also can be an inspiration to others knowingly and unknowingly in the same way.

In my profession as a protocol and personal performance coach I have met numerous people who have said to me one way or another that they have low self -esteem, their confidence level has crashed and they have issues with their image. My job is to professionally lift

them from where they are now to where they want to be faster than if they were to do it by themselves. In a bid to bounce back it is a process of getting my clients to rediscover themselves and believe

You are your own ambassador, set to achieve anything you want. You must belive in yourself again and again to forge forward, take leadership and carry on flying the flag of success.

Whether to believe again for you is to restore life, hope, laughter, joy, happiness, comfort, aspirations, relationships or friendships, I have come up with my own simple formula that could work for all. All you need to do is BELIEvE and take the ball in your court starting right NOw.

The formula

Braverysadly when all hope is lost or there are days when you may feel downcast it takes much more than just a pretty smile to bounce back on your feet. This is a process that can take within minutes to months if care is not taken. A shoulder to lean on may help, words of wisdom may soothe, but overall the first step will need to come from you to pick up the pieces and start afresh. This is a step of bravery the very first in our ‘Believe again Formula’. When you have reached a stage where you want something different you will need to position yourself with boldness, tenacity, determination and that go getter mindset. Your brave heart will create new opportunities for you and take you to your next level. start with making up a positive mindset, talking to those who can influence in a positive way and always have the will to believe YoU CAn Do It.

EmpoweredYour journey to believing again kicks off when you give yourself the opportunity to learn something new. This can be academically, physically, mentally, financially you name it. Be empowered by the things going on around you and increase your knowledge base even Janet Adetu

when it does not relate to you directly. Knowledge is certainly power coming from what you watched, read, heard or wrote.

LiftedHow do you lift yourself ? It cannot be by staying on the same spot. Being lifted could mean a step, a jump or a giant leap it all depends on how far you would like to go. The choice at this stage in the formula is entirely yours.

Inspirednot everyone is easily inspired by what goes on around them, even when they learn something new. They seem to be quite content with living the mediocre way so really could not be bothered about today or tomorrow. This puts a limitation on moving forward and the will to believe again. Being inspired by things is key to wanting a change for the better, it hets you thinking about things that ordinarily you may not o dreamt of. Inspiration allows you to identify certain capabiliyties in you, your strengths and weaknesses, your level of determination and possibly your new goals for yourself. My favorite adage is:

“Be Inspired and Aspire for Greatness”

ElevatedWhere are you on your own personal ladder? Chances are you are still not where you want to be and that is oK as it is the same for many of us. It will take being elevated to reach the next goal and the next to show that you are making any progress. The ‘believe again formula’ is all about positivity there is simply no room for procrastination. Maybe you are looking at your job and you are overdue for promotion, have you checked your etiquette savvy quotient? Are you a leader of distinction or just one of the rest. Have you dared to be different that is what elevation does for you? You need a rise in every facet of life don’t just walk run for it. Climb the

Mahé is the largest island (157.3 km²) of seychelles, lying in the northeast of the nation in the Indian ocean. The island was named after Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, a French

governor of Mauritius.

It contains the capital city of Victoria and accommodates 86% of the country's total population.

still, the island retains its idyllic beauty, with 3,000-foot mountains and scores of gorgeous beaches.

Many plants, including the so-called Jellyfish tree and several rare orchids, are unique to Mahe's shores.

The seychelles natural History Museum, the Botanical Gardens and the Codevar Craft Centre, all in Victoria, are not to be missed.A day on foot is ample time to see Victoria, one of the smallest capitals in the world.

Mahé Island

Mahé Island Park

Located on Mahe, one of the seychelles' 115 granite and coral islands, Victoria is the republic's business and cultural hub.

At its center sits the Victoria Clocktower, a national monument reminiscent of London's "Big Ben" that has kept ticking since 1903, unaffected by the modern glass and concrete development around it.

Visit the local art galleries and craft markets to soak up the city's friendly charm.

While the dazzling coastline of Mahé is undoubtedly the main attraction, it's crucial that you take the time to explore the island's mountainous interior.

The splendid Morne seychellois national Park encompasses an impressive 20% of the land area of Mahé and contains a wide variety of habitats, from coastal mangrove forests up to the country's highest peak, the Morne seychellois (905m).

Choked in thick forest, the enigmatic central part of the park is virtually deserted and can only be reached by walking trails; you don't have to go very far before the outside world starts to feel a long, long way away.

the exhiliration begins as you turn into the road by the Central Bank in Calabar, off the city’s Eleven Eleven roundabout. Driving down, the road is straight and then a left turn made to look like a ‘U’ by the lush green and

well manicured lawn before a drive that lasts just seconds, brings you to a gate manned by agile young men who conduct a search on all vehicles entering this place of pure pleasure; Calabar’s Marina Resort. As you drive in, a canopy of trees greet you, just like the tireless mass of water driven by back and forth tides, grab your attention and compel you to indulge. There are options and that is exactly what will tickle your fancy about this place, opened to the public on May 26, 2007, by the enigmatic Donald Duke, former governor of Cross River state. now in year 2014, a few add-ons to the original concept and the tenacity of Pro-Leisure Plus, the company managing the facility, has given the Resort a new eloquence that gels like

bread and butter. If you do get to tortuga Island, better grab a seat, recline in it, make an order, let your eyes pan around and no matter

how strong the pull is, do not let your thoughts wander off because this exquisite place is better enjoyed when taken in whole. tortuga Island is not an island in the real sense, but the famed sit-in or sit-out in the Resort. As the Cross River laps alluringly on the well fortified edges of tortuga Island, long rows of well trimmed flower hedges ‘enforce’ walk ways, places to sit, decorum and a total package that soothes indulgence. Ah, there is a well stocked bar there, expertly roasted fish and a few other things you need to explore on your own. If you decide to check in with a loved one, never ever miss the long walk down the Island, mumbling sweet nothings, stopping for a kiss, chasing what you have already caught or just pure fence mending talk. Whatever you choose to do, this place is and will happily be your accomplice.

Walk a few steps away from tortuga Island and meet the past in the present. A carefully put together slave History Museum with life-like simulations give you a perfect peep into the dark world of slavery. The guided tour through the various artificial chambers in the museum can be spine chilling to good measure. It is often never out of place to see a few persons come out of the museum teary eyed; the thoroughness and effects meticulously built into this museum, something you may never find in any other museum in nigeria, is the reason this scene repeatedly plays out.

As you drive in, a canopy of trees greet you, just like the tireless mass of water driven by back and forth tides, grab your attention and compel you to indulge.

not done, grab you a ticket and walk straight into the majestic embrace of the Resort’s cinema. Make your movie pick, grab you and your crew some pop corn, a soft drink and get your money’s worth. The movies you will see are top of the draw nollywood and Hollywood movies. Even though we say so, the movies are not restricted to the two ‘film streets’, good movies from outside of these two, do make a commanding appearance on the big high definition experience this cinema offers. You better go soak you up in a good movie…, it doesn’t hurt, it is just in the pocket.

now the kids get to enjoy a fantastic time in the new game hall or flex like tomorrow is just but a whisper away, on the carousel. What they have for the kids has been carefully selected to keep them spell bound. Entertain no fears, the Resort has experienced and well trained attendants on the ground to ensure your kids don’t put a good foot in the wrong place. Come on now, you can also take a boat ride and enjoy a real high octane treat. The ride cost a fadding and could see you commute to tinapa or go enjoy fresh palmwine on the other side of the river. When you get back in, plantain and bushmeat is served, not too far from where you get off the boat. If you still have some space in your stomach, ‘suya’, that famous meat kebab is also freshly done on the side for chewing options. We will dare say it sure is not finished as a trip to the Marina Resort without some play time at the Atlantic Bar and Lounge, sounds more like a half made meal. step into the Atlantic Bar and Lounge, open from 2pm all week and enjoy the silky sounds dropping from the in-house DJ’s wheels of steel. He drops the sounds with precise musical abandonment, strips you bare of the boredom that came with you and then takes you several notches up the pleasure tree. It is indeed the Resort’s way of helping you give you a treat. In such an expansive facility where extensive space has been

Every country has its unique traditions and culture that reflects on its people and Ghana is no exception to that. The republic of Ghana

is located along the gulf of Guinea and Atlantic ocean in the sub region of West Africa.

Ghana is renowned for its varied environments, authentic African culture and has warm, welcoming people. When on vacation, you could have a volunteer who will offer to take you round the country unlike anywhere else you will have to pay for a tour guide. If you’re planning to visit Ghana, keep reading for an insight into what you can expect; learning about lifestyle in Ghana, the local people, the food and what they wear, this can help understand and appreciate your visit to Ghana.

As a volunteered tour guide I say ’ 'AKWAABA’ which means welcome. It’s an expression you will hear several times daily as you travel around Ghana. Akwaaba has won the hearts of many travellers to Ghana and now a common word among foreigners. When you visit Ghana you are assured to be greeted with Akwaaba at the airport.

Cedi currency is named after sea shells (Shell money).

In western Africa, shell money was usual legal tender up until the mid19th century. The name of Ghana's national currency, the Cedi, is derived from the twi word the cowry shell, which belong to a species of sea snails with porcelain-like shells. This was formerly introduced as a currency in Africa which was used as a medium of slave trade along with gold dust with merchants from Arabia. Coins making up a cedi are also

Modern coins were produced and used in Ghana from the late 1700s but cowries were also accepted as currency until 1901.

Ghanaians are among Africa’s most peaceful people

Ghana has been ranked as one of the most peaceful nations in West Africa and the 40th in the world, according to the Global Peace Index(GPI), unlike some parts of the Africa which is associated with crime and civil unrest.

Many foreigners travel to Ghana without the risks associated with other nations on the African continent. Ghanaian people are warm, welcoming and grateful for the help of international volunteers.

been a friend.

Shina… (Afrojuju). Hehehehe. Another fellow CBM. You also joined us not quite long but your drive and continuous push to succeed in your region is quite admirable… You are a young man with a mature mind (that’s what I see), and you are everywhere…lol, anywhere the business can come from is a go for you… Weldon team mate and its been a pleasure knowing you.

Esojay… ok so this obviously is last but not least and intentional too because I have been trying to think of a description of him, ok here it goes… The MD, fondly called soji, (I still have not been able to bring myself to calling you that though), Ade is a lot of things in one, The MD (sorry soji) is so many more things in one. A boss, Leader, Coach, Mentor, Friend, Father, Grandfather (by virtue of all the RIL kiddies), Motivator, an inspiration, communicator, good listener, hard and smart worker, has an answer for almost any question (yes he is not God) but he is that good, Calm, selfless, ok I might have to stop here but above all a Great Leader… I have worked with MD’s, this one is different, never seen him loose his cool, yell or shout a staff down…nEVER, he is tenacious and an epitome of who a true boss should be… Always with his selfie stick for his usual esojayselfie pics… A lover of photography, a dresser (always on point) matches up colours well, can bring any party to life, He works hard and plays hard.

Its been more than a pleasure been in your team sir… I appreciate the opportunity… More blessings…

And there you have it, my awesome sister (part 1) and men-folk (part-2). “The greatest asset of any organization are its people”.

I appreciate my colleagues…

welcome Back…

so this is the concluding part of my write up in the last edition, particularly dedicated to my Men-Folk (again if there Is anything

like that). Colleagues turned friends and family. I make bold to say that they are as amazing as my sister-folk to which part one was dedicated and I feel honored to have crossed Paths with these knowledgeable, hardworking and talented assets who make up this group.

In no particular order I kick it off with…

Emeka Emekus ( onwa netilogu) as tutu would say. A diligent worker I would like to refer to as the FIXER.

When you were Admin Manager you did your job so well and very passionately, you just ‘FIX It’… you are fun and lively, funny and witty, friendly and a good stepper. Your dancing skills are just awesome (ever ready to open up the dance floor), You can pose for picture for Africa. I appreciate you dear one and it has been wonderful knowing you brov…

Uncle joe… Ha niyi just hit the nail on the head with his description of you. Very knowledgeable, (but always wanting a frontal hug…side eye for you). With the enormous work you oversee you are still as calm as you can be. I do not work directly under you but I admire your leadership style, your work ethics and your selflessness. You are indeed appreciated…. Yet to see you

loose your cool even in the face of so much pressure…Thank you for been you and you might not know this but I appreciate your person and it has been a pleasure knowing and working with you sIR.

honray… (Papa ose). An accountant extraordinaire, a tenacious worker, so good at what he does and carries out his duties selflessly… You can’t dance to save your life (such a woeful dancer)… you be cracking me up all the time. Your quest to learn more and improve in your chosen field is admirable, you always appear sharp and neat in your dressing…I really like that though… You are my friend and a dear one at that… you are hugely appreciated…

Sly… Hmmm The chief accountant

general himself… I must confess that you didn’t come off as a friendly one when I first met you, you seemed uptight but didn’t I say earlier never to judge a book by its cover? Well yeah that totally describes you sly…you guard your books so well that almost nothing goes unnoticed (every kobo is accounted for)… You are a success story sly, I admire your love for your job and your selflessness (you see that’s a common thing about most of us…sELFLEssnEss). You have a kind heart though you like to come off tough, trust me I appreciate you so much and you are genuinely loved… (I’m waiting for you to tell me “Irene please don’t love me o”. )

muyi (baba Dudu) so now you’ve joined the beard gang abi…lolzz. You joined us not so long ago but you fit in so well as a typical ‘Ril Person’. You can be funny you know, jovial, friendly, cool, calm and collected(I hope your head is not swelling) and you are good company too. Welcome to the Ril crew brov, its been my pleasure having you as a colleague and friend and oh you are an intelligent fella too… Keep up the faith dear…

Itaya… (RIL olopa) hehehehe I was told you don’t like to be called ‘I tire’ lolzz. A hard and smart worker… you just do your thing, a no nonscence guy but can be friendly and nice. You have a good heart I know because I have seen it many a time…Thank you for who you are and the job you do… I appreciate you.

Seun… (papa praize), olori Comp ‘n’ Ben, so ticklish… we know you are enjoying your food when you start sweeting on the head…lolzz. Another woeful dancer next to Henry…You are one hard worker, very diligent and detailed also knowledgeable, you have a good sense of humour and you know I love you (agape o). Thank you for been a good friend and colleague.

Ademolasoye Awonaike…Ghenghen… Ade as you are fondly called… My boss of life, can the office be complete without Ade? nah… You need an Ade in every office trust me… Rockerfeller of life… like a cat with nine lives… You make the office fun, An awesome worker, guides his subordinates right, always ready and willing to help, open minded and blunt… You are a lot of things in one but I must appreciate you for practicing the culture you preach. Thank you for been you and I might not come directly to you as you would expect (I’m sure by now you must know I don’t like to jump

hierarchy plus shola is doing amazing as my line head) but I do appreciate your person sIR, your selflessness and work ethics.

Samuel Olaitan… a very calm and peaceful soul with a great sense of humour, you make me laugh out loud, you are another diligent and hard worker (ok so almost everyone here is… no flattery), I am pleased with your person and honoured to have worked with you. You are a dear colleague… (I hope you know this).

Ernest Ikpo… My good friend, there are actually a lot of people here that crack me up well and earnest is sure one of them… My fellow CBM…The fear of MPR is the beginning of wisdom for us, hahahaha. You do your job and you do it well, we might be far apart but you are a for sure a good team player, you have an open mind and good heart. Thanks for your assistance during my first few months with RIL, your encouragements helped. Thank you for

Prior to commencing the program, there were no kidney transplants being carried out in any part of the west African subregion. to put this into proper context, kidney failure, the indication for carrying out kidney transplants affects about 15% of nigerians by present estimates. 100/million population of these require renal replacement therapy in the form of dialysis and later transplant yearly. Given our population now of 180,000,000, 18,000 new patients yearly require to commence dialysis but given the costs and availability less than 2,000 are able to commence dialysis and for those able to afford transplantation no centre was available in the country and patients had to travel out of the country, mostly to western world and more recently India to avail themselves of the procedure with the attendant cost and logistic challenges.

snH under my leadership commenced a transplant program in the year 2000 and since then have done close to 200 successful transplants over 60% of transplants done in nigeria till date. This wasn't without major challenges however, both with initiating the program and sustaining it ever since.

At the onset we collaborated with a hospital in the U.K. Which for pecuniary reasons suddenly suspended the initial

collaboration. With this, many members of the team were discouraged and were afraid that this spelt a doom for the program! However through dint of persistence, perseverance and the Grace of God, we were able to identify an alternate unit even though by remote contact.

At every stage of the development and progress of the program there have been challenges but these have been surmounted by commitment, by carrying everyone along and ensuring we have an identified and stated objective that all members of the 'team' identified with and keyed into.

As with most things in life, running a successful program such as this requires a consensus of efforts of ALL members of the team. Everyone must be carried along, no member must be left behind and all glory must be to God who gives the enabling grace and to all the group as a collective. This is regardless of how small the contribution of such an individual is to the success of the program/project.

Dr Ebun Bamgboye was recently appointed Chairman of the Board of Resource Intermediaries Limited of which he is a pioneer director

The WAAKYE food is a delicacy for Ghanaians

Waakye is a dish of cooked rice and beans which is a familiar sight for most Ghanaians. It originated from the northern parts of Ghana. The meal can be found on sale all over the country, from restaurant to street food vendors. Waakye is mostly eaten for breakfast, lunch or supper. A typical Waakye meal usually consists of the cooked rice and beans, stew, which is served with some spaghetti, Gari, boiled eggs, meat or fried fish, stewed wele (cowhide) and vegetable salad.

Waakye is affordable and easy to come by, just give yourself a treat with Waakye when you visit Ghana.

Ghanaians are named after days of the week

The Akan tribe which is the largest ethnic group in Ghana, traditionally name their children after the days of the week they were born. The custom has come to stay as many Ghanaians are descendants from the

Even though Ghanaians usually have a number of names, including an English or Christian name, their middle names are mostly inherited from a family member and will definitely include a name after the day of the week they were born. Below are the names and their day of the week.
