OVERVIEW When, after many years in exile, Czesław Miłosz came to live in Kraków in the 1990s, his presence prompted a unique gathering of poets from east and west. After several well-received readings, the poets went to a café, where each occupied a separate table to sign books and chat with their readers. A long queue formed. When curious passersby asked what they were queuing for, they heard “for the poets.” They joined the queue. It is no wonder that in 2013 UNESCO appointed Kraków as its City of Literature. Kraków’s literary residents have included the Nobel prize–winning poets Czesław Miłosz and Wisława Szymborska, science fiction writer Stanisław Lem, and satirical playwright Sławomir Mrożek. Its living, internationally acclaimed poets include Adam Zagajewski and Ewa Lipska. It is their influence and the unique literary atmosphere of Kraków that have created a city that lives and breathes literature. Our base will be Kraków, an ancient and beautiful city that has remained largely intact from its earliest medieval days. Kraków is home to one of the oldest universities in the world and is the cradle of Polish modernism. Throughout Poland’s turbulent history, Kraków has been the historical, cultural, and intellectual heart of the nation. Musical, dramatic, and artistic expression are also part of the Kraków landscape, often combining with literature in performance. In addition to discussing the works of some of Poland’s extraordinary poets, we will discover other cultural contributors to Polish modernism—painting, philosophy, theatre, literary cabarets, opera, and the revival of a vibrant Jewish culture. We will also take part in the Miłosz Festival, an annual gathering of literary heavyweights from around the world. Theatres, museums, medieval churches, restored synagogues, and atmospheric cafes reverberate with poetry and music. We will visit Nowa Huta (literally “New Steelworks”), one of only two planned socialist realist cities ever built. The site is a Soviet attempt to create an in-your-face proletarian opponent to intellectual, artsy-fartsy, fairytale Kraków, and arguably one of the finest examples of deliberate social engineering in the world. We will conclude our visit with several days in Zakopane, Poland’s leading mountain resort. In the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries, Poland’s intellectual elite decamped here. Writers, poets, painters, and architects have gathered in Zakopane for a hundred years in a bid to reinterpret Polish culture.

What is a Classical Pursuits Literary Adventure? Ann Kirkland founded Classical Pursuits in 1999 to provide thoughtful vacations for inquiring adults, with the world’s best literature, art and music as our guides. By exploring and celebrating the particular visions of writers and artists in the location in which their works were created, we paradoxically discover the timeless truths that make these works great. Classical Pursuits Literary Adventures are a collaborative effort. Classical Pursuits develops the themes and selects the leaders. Worldwide Quest is in charge of production, expertly looking after all the logistical arrangements.

Most important, with a Classical Pursuits Literary Adventure you will not lose the spontaneity, flexibility, and sense of personal discovery you seek in your own private travels – only the logistical hassles.

OUR ADVENTURES ARE A SPECIAL BALANCE OF:• in-depth discussion of important literature;• guided walks to immerse ourselves in the cultural

and natural history of a place;• informal talks with local people to provide background

and context to our inquiry;• generous unscheduled time; • exceedingly convivial company; • and of course, lingering conversation over great meals!

A WORD ABOUTClassical Pursuits

What’s involved? The only prerequisites are to read before

you arrive and to come with an open mind.

Adventure for the mind. Travel for the soul.
