From the Principal’s Desk…………... Welcome to Term 4 Week 9 at Kilmore Primary School.
$30,000 - THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
On behalf of all of our students and staff, I would like to thank each and every one of you who contributed to the Family and Friend’s Fundraising activities this year. Including some money that was carried over from last year’s fundraising, this year $30,000 has been handed over to the school to support the improvement of learning opportunities for our children. This is an amazing effort.
If you were a member of the committee, a volunteer for a special activity, purchased raffle tickets or goods, sent children to the disco or fun run, ordered lunch on our special lunch order days or assisted in any other capacity, you are part of this amazing effort. It is a credit to our school community. Money raised has been used for the following:
On Tuesday I went to see the movie Wonder with our grade six students. I wanted to thank them for the invitation to be part of this special event. The students have been involved in a detailed study of the book Wonder. They will now do a comparison between the book and the movie to conclude their studies. The children were exceptional in their enthusiasm, manners and gratitude for the opportunity. Well done.
Our new Foundation class for 2018 have had two visits and are presenting as an outstanding group of budding students who are eager to become part of our community. I would like to thank the parents who have been involved in their transition both new parents coming in and our own parents who have extended a very warm welcome.
Last week our grade six children took part in a unique and innovative program called High School Days. Teachers from Broadford Secondary College and Wallan Secondary College ran classes with our students introducing themselves and talking about high school structures. Last year’s school captains came to talk of their transition experience to our children as well. This program is the brainchild of Carolyn Crowther and a wonderful program that has been applauded by the Secondary School’s involved.

High School Day @ KPS
As part of our Transition Program, we held our annual ‘High School Day’ last Friday. Teachers from Broadford and Wallan Secondary Colleges spent time at Kilmore PS working with our Grade 6 students. Students worked in ‘Home Groups’ rather than class groups, used a timetable to work out where they were meant to be, moved around the school to different classrooms and participated in art, maths, PE and science lessons. We were very lucky to have Mrs Coppinger, Mr Hakki and Mr Rose from Broadford SC and Ms Cesarin from Wallan SC teach students in a Year 7 format. We also welcomed back two of our School Captains from 2016 who are now experts at being Year 7 students for a Question and Answer session.

Kilmore Primary School Student Engagement Policy A link to a draft copy of the Kilmore Primary School Student Engagement Policy has been posted on our school’s website. This policy was recently reviewed and updated by the Wellbeing Team. The Student Engagement Policy details our procedures for maintaining a positive, supportive and engaging school culture, where diversity is valued and steps are taken to promote pro-social behaviour. If you feel there is some element of the policy you would like to discuss or areas that are not clear, please feel free to email me with your considerations. [email protected]
At Kilmore Primary School we value the support of parents and friends and the contribution they make to our school. As a small token of our appreciation we would like to invite you to our Christmas ‘thank you’ morning tea on Tuesday 19th December in the stadium foyer at 10.45am – 11.30am

What a week! Our transition program is in full swing with special events for our 2018 Foundation students and a ‘High School Day’ for Grade 6s. There’s also been a Teddy Bears’ Picnic, a Grade 6 excursion, preparations for our Creativity Expo….. and a surprise trip to the animal dogtor.
Some sad news - the teddies forgot to invite me to
the picnic. It might have had something to do
with the unfortunate incident with a chicken roll
at last year’s event? Can’t wait to see you all next
week at the Christmas BBQ and Creativity Expo!
Above: I spent some time helping my future Foundation friends. We all drew a picture of ourselves and our family. I only tried to eat the crayon twice. Left: It’s pretty tiring meeting new people
and when Mrs James read a story I just
couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer.
Right: I supawvised hockey at High School Day. I’m still working on being able to carry the stick. I can carry the hockey puck without any problems – I proved it!
Below: It was all fun and games until someone tried to eat a toothpick. I dropped it but managed to snap it into two pieces first and one part got stuck in my mouth. I had to leave school early and go to the vets. I had a little sleep and when I woke up, the toothpick was gone. It was just like magic! Dr Emily put the toothpick in a bag so I could take it to school for show and tell. My new friends at the vets were very kind
and helpful, looking after me straight away.
They said I was lovely and I think they
secretly hope so I can visit again – but
without part of a toothpick in me.
Comments that have put a smile on my dial this week… “I’m just like you Asha, I love food!” “Your head is my favourite part. It’s so soft.” “You’re very big for a two year old.” “Are you feeling better?” “Do you get a buddy too?” (asked at Foundation transition when students met their buddies)

Transition Policy
Kilmore Primary School is committed to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. Our school employs a range of strategies to embed a culture of child safety in compliance with the Child Safety Standards and Ministerial Order No. 870. Aim: School transition occurs as students move into, within and beyond their education settings, which are vital stages in children’s education and overall development. The transition process is important for future emotional, social and intellectual growth. Transition aims to alleviate difficulties and recognises that children’s individual needs may vary according to social background, experiences, and stages of development. Rationale/Objectives: The Transition program aims to: support and empower the child and family, and provide collaboration between all people and institutions involved in the transition process inform families about Kilmore Primary School develop a sense of belonging develop knowledge of the structure and expectations of the learning environment reduce anxiety Implementation: A teacher will be assigned the responsibility of Foundation transition and provided with time to attend Cluster PLT transition meetings, organise transition dates and class groups. Appendix 1
Kilmore PS Transition Schedule
Pre-school to Foundation Transition At Kilmore Primary School we aim to make the transition from pre-school to Foundation a smooth, happy and successful experience for each child. Our transition program includes ongoing communication and visits with our local kindergartens, an Open Morning on a Saturday in Education Week each year, Discovery Open Mornings where prospective students participate in a number school like activities and formal transition sessions in term 4 each year. We encourage and welcome visits from potential students and families with a familiarisation tour of our school being offered Wednesday mornings at 10.00am. Extra transition is provided for students with special needs. In term 4 prospective Foundation students and their parents/guardians are invited to take part in a Foundation orientation program comprising three visits to KPS. Students participate in learning activities in a Foundation classroom enabling them to become familiar with the surroundings and school routines. During this time parents have the opportunity to attend an information session about our school and learn how to best assist their child in the transition to school life. The prospective Foundation students are well supported by a grade 5 buddy (grade 6 the following year) providing security and a bonding relationship with an older student at the school. All parents receive a detailed information package and the students are given a welcome show bag. Grade 6 to Secondary College Transition Our goal at Kilmore Primary School is to provide a smooth and efficient transition from primary to secondary school with support and extra transition provided for those who require it. The transition coordinator receives and distributes information provided by the Department of Education and local secondary colleges, and circulates flyers and keeps students and parents informed about information evenings. Grade 6 teachers complete transition statements for their students to be passed on to the relevant secondary colleges. Throughout the year Grade 6 students participate in transition events hosted by two local secondary schools including the Wallan SC Taster Day and Broadford SC school production.
Moving Up- Transition between Grade Levels The transition from one grade level to the next can be challenging for some students. To make this shift more easily, students have the opportunity to spend some time in their next year level and meet their classroom teachers during two transition sessions in term 4 each year. Extra transition is provided for students with special needs.
Students transferring to Kilmore PS in grade levels other than Foundation also have the
opportunity to attend a transition session on the second Tuesday of December (the day Grade 6
students’ transition to secondary school)
