GOOD NEWSVolume 39, Issue 3 March, 2019

We have the Spirit, yes we do! We have the Spirit, how about you?

This play on words with the popular cheer reminds us of our Nebraska Synod’s 2019 Lenten Theme, We are Church Together. The Holy Spirit uses us all in ways we haven’t dreamed or imagined to be the Church Together.

Since one of the goals is to unite congregations across the Nebraska Synod in common conversation during Lent 2019. It is a wonderful opportunity for us as individual disciples and as a congregation (together with the rest of the Synod) to explore what it means that we are the Church Together.

Services will be on Wednesdays, 12:15 PM and 7:00 PM. The schedule of topics will be:

Ash Wednesday, March 6: “First – who are we as individuals”

March 13: “Gathered by the Holy Spirit”

March 20: “Shaped by Word and Sacrament”

March 27: “Diversity and Challenges”

April 3: “Joys and Burdens”

April 10: “We Are Connected”

Meals will be served prior to each Wednesday service: serving times will be 11:00 AM to Noon; 5:5-6:45 PM. We are grateful to Marlys Duin who is heading this year’s meals. We also thank Ralph Diggins for his many years of ine cooking. VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED to help prepare

the meals. If you can help for one or more meals, please speak with Marlys or Pastor Olaf.

It’s hard to believe approximately 5 days after you receive this newsletter we will begin Lenten services with ASH Wednesday on March 6. We could use probably four ushers/greeters for Ash Wednesday's evening service, and two ushers/greeters for the following Lenten evening services. Ushers will hand out bulletins to people as they arrive for service. There will be a sign-up sheet in the usher directory at the back of the Sanctuary or you can email [email protected]. Free Concert - National Lutheran ChoirSaturday, March 2, 8:00 PMSt. Cecilia Cathedral701 N 40th St

Last Spring, the National Lutheran Choir contacted people at St. Cecilia Cathedral as to the possibility of holding a concert there. The people at St. Cecilia’s naturally contacted us to see if we could help sponsor the concert. We accepted this magni icent opportunity.

As you recall, Archbishop George Joseph Lucas preached at a worship service here at Kountze Memorial commemorating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. This concert would provide an opportunity for all of us to continue the good ecumenical relations that have developed between area Lutherans and Roman Catholics.

The choir will be presenting a 90 minute concert. The outstanding program will begin with the performance with a prelude of Johann Sebastian Bach's motet "Lobet den Hernn," Palestrina's gorgeous "Sicut Cervus," a rousing spiritual "I Got a Key," and a congregational hymn "Praise to the Lord." The program will conclude with the “Holy Spirit Mass” written by Norwegian Lutheran composer

Kim André Arnesen. The “Holy Spirit Mass” was speci ically commissioned for the commemoration of Reformation 500th.

The National Lutheran Choir will begin this mini-tour by singing at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana (February 28). They will then head to St. Louis

to sing at First Presbyterian Church (March 1). They then come to St. Cecilia’s (March 2, 8:00 PM) and then head north to sing at St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Cloud, MN (March 3).

We are proud to have this opportunity to present this magni icent Choir and concert. It is free to the public thanks to the generosity of Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, St. Michael Lutheran Church, Immanuel Communities, the American Guild of Organists—Omaha Chapter, and an anonymous donor.

DISCOVERY TRIPJuly 16–27, 2019 | Moshi, Tanzania

Back in November Jonna Holland and Carol Stoltenberg shared their Tanzania experiences with us at a Sunday morning Forum. Even though both of hem had traveled quite a bit before, this was a special kind of trip, different and more meaningful than anything they had so far experienced. The people they met were so poor and yet so joyful and generous.

If you would like to participate in the 2019 Discovery Trip to Tanzania, check out the details at https:// iles.constantcontact.com/8c919081201/da73c243-3f82-4e78-8696-03d37afe9824.pdf. But BEWARE! This is a life changing adventure! Consider joining Carol on this trip of a lifetime and get the chance to see the “big 5” African animals on a Serengeti safari as well.

With my deepest sincerity, I would like to thank everyone for their prayers, cards, and support during my period of illness and recovery. It is such a blessing to have fellow members of Kountze share their love and compassion toward me. May Christ’s love and grace be with all of us. Jeff Perkins

It has been one year since my diagnosis of cancer. My surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are done. I want to thank so many for the prayers and good wishes for my recovery. My faith, family, and friends have given me strength. I praise God for my loving Church.Fondly,Vicki Freeman

sabbatical from Creighton University, a time of research and writing when professors are exempted from teaching and committee work.

For part of his sabbatical (after Easter), Pr. Hall will be at the new Library for Reformation Research in Wittenberg, Germany. Pr. Hall has recently learned that he received a DAAD (German Academic Exchange), a competitive international grant from the German government to foster

greater cooperation among scholars and researchers (similar to the Fulbright offered by the US government). While in Germany, he will continue research on his project, "Sola Scriptura: Its Use and Limitation in the Lutheran Tradition," which he began last spring as a Visiting Fellow of the Divinity Faculty of the University of Cambridge.

Pr. Hall would like to express his gratitude to the Council, Personnel Committee, Pr. Roynesdal, and the congregation as a whole for their support and encourage for these unique opportunities.
