Aslak O. Brimi er en av de beste felespillerne i landet, oghar fått med seg et kobbel av dyktige instrumentalister for åleke seg med springleiktakt og hallingrytme. GruppaSvermere byr på springleik i jazzdrakt, halling med tæl ogsugerende vals. Den nye plata deres, «Sylfest Mork»,inneholder gammelt slåttestoff presentert med rå fele,klingende saksofon og lekende jazzgitar. - Vårmusikkfilosofi baserer seg både på at vi ønsker å føre videretradisjonsmusikken på en god måte, samtidig som viarrangerer og utvikler musikken med gruppebesetningenvår.

Vi er bevisste på at instrumentalistene skal komme tydeligfram. Utgangspunktet er gamle slåtteformer, og for oss erdet viktig å arrangere på tradisjonsstoffets premisser. Myeav utgangspunktet for Svermere sin musikk er slåttestoff itradisjon etter Hans W. Brimi (1917-98) og Sjugurd Garmo(1896-1991) - begge viktige slåttekilder i Lom. I tillegg tilspringleik, halling og vals, byr plata «Sylfest Mork» på tresvenske polskaer, samt en nykomponert låt. Sistnevnte eren bryllups- leik Aslak O. Brimi laget for noen år siden tilparet Ola og Hans kjent fra NRK1-serien Bygdeliv.

After the critically acclaimed Cigance comes a new chapterin the NAAT VELIOV story. Raised among the sounds ofa musical family, VELIOV right from the start showed amarked propensity for a career as a musician and everysoon took upon his young shoulders the responsibility ofcarrying forth a weighty tradition. The town of Kocani inMacedonia lies near the capital Skopje but a glimpse atVELIOV’s genealogy reveals Turkish origins, whichexplains why the tunes he plays combine elements culledfrom all over the whole Balkan region and not merely the,albeit rich, Macedonian tradition. In the transmission ofthe repertory from father to sun, typical of the great gypsymusical families, VELIOV, thanks to his great talent andsensibility, has been able to introduce a whole series ofnew stylistic flourishes, giving a new lease of life to the oldtown brass band style typical of Eastern Europe andlaunching the Kocani Orkestar into the stratosphere ofbrass and wind music. Striking in VELIOV and hismusicians is the ability to fuse virtuoso playing and technicalexcellence with great depth of understanding and sensibilitytowards the music itself. VELIOV’s considerableinternational fame both in music and cinema (he has beena frequent collaborator on the soundtracks of EmirKusturica’s films).

Today, when Raphael Fays assumes something fromDjango Reinhardt’s repertoire, he talks of it as «a return toroots». Like all guitarists from the Manouche community,Django was his earliest idol. As for Raphael’s father, LouisFays, a professional guitarist, he is one of those artists whodon’t seek the limelight, «a musicians’ musician» who helpshis leader reach the summits; every so-called star has needof their services. Using Django’s recordings as a pedagogicsupport, Louis decided to have his 5-year old son practiceon a special custom-made guitar from instrument makerFavino. Until he was 12, Raphael spent all his time exclusivelyand obsessively working on Django’s highly individual style,running through the meanders and labyrinths of his playingover and over again so as to grasp every subtle detail,understand exactly what set Django apart from otherguitarists in the jazz world. He was entering that cult of «JustDjango and no-one else!»

In Virginia evident and strong is the interest of BIRKINTREE in shuffling the genres. If the Irish musical traditionremains the central pillar around which the group organizestheir sound, at the same time is clear how that legacy iscontinuously compared with jazz, classic music and evenminimalism. The style-crossing is possible thanks to thequality and sensitivity of each single component of the group,able to face such difficult and brave challenge always at thebest. Finding a meeting point between uilleann pipes andthe sound of a piano or that of percussions wasn’t easy atall, yet BIRKIN TREE reveal with Virginia how skilful insolving the problem they can be. Traditional tracks undergoa deep metamorphose, each one presenting itself as mini-suites gathering various themes. The arrangements, theimprovisations and the inventions do the rest, bytransforming the raw material into something new anddifferent.
