Image Acoustics

New to Korral Sound & Vision this month is the exceptional Image Acoustics.

This framed picture conceals a surprising secret; the world’s thinnest wireless Hi-Fi speaker system thinking on the type of products required to listen to music in the 21st century. Something that just sounds great is no longer good enough. We also need to embrace the aesthetic. A product must look good as well as sounding great, with a unique blend of technology, performance, quality and class leading sound. We have worked with one of the UK’s foremost acoustic engineers to ensure that our products sound fabulous. We have then combined this with experience in art and framing to ensure that we can provide you with a product that is just what you are looking for you.

An on-wall wireless speaker system, custom manufactured to your exact requirements, just like a conventional picture frame, you can choose whatever artwork or image you want, it can even be a mirror! The convenience of wireless, dock-less operation and avoidance of clutter. You can stream music wirelessly from your iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad directly to SoundScene; you don’t even need a computer. Use iTunes Match to play your entire music library from the “Cloud”. Add a music on demand service such as Spotify and you will have literally millions of tracks to choose from. And SoundScene sounds great too, thanks to four low profile side firing wide dispersion BMR drivers, each are driven by their own dedicated 12.5 Watt RMS amplifier (50 Watts total) and each digitally equalized for optimum performance

Use on its own, or can be combined with other AirPlay products to create a diverse multi-room system.

Imagine Acoustics Ltd is a new company with a strong pedigree. Established by a 39 year Hi-Fi industry veteran with a view to bringing fresh thinking on the type of products required to listen to music in the 21st century. Each SoundScene is manufactured to order, with assembly and frame manufacture in our Old Woking facility, and the SoundEnclosure manufactured by our woodworking partner based near Thame in Oxfordshire.

In BBC Music magazine they tell us that there is now a 'Picture-Perfect' solution to enjoy music at home? SoundScene is the elegant way to enjoy music of your choice.

speaker isn't the first you can hang on a wall, or

indeed the first to double as a picture-frame. It is,

however, the first to have integrated AirPlay, so you can play direct to it from an iPod Touch, iPhone or

iPad, or indeed a computer running iTunes.

Wharfedale

We've been lucky enough to have received a pair of Wharfdale Jade 5 speakers for our reference setup. They are connected up to Marantz S-15 premium series sacs and amplifier, Pro-Ject Genie turntable, Sonos connect with Musical Fidelity M1 Dac. Mains is tackled using a Russ Andrews Ultra Purifer Block with Megaclamp, cables are Chord speaker cable and QED interconnects.

They were pretty impressive out of the box, the finish is amazing, our pair are piano black, by far the most popular finish, and they look exceptional. Sound was pretty good out of the box too, It took close enough to 70 or 80 hours to run in, Wharfdale say 100 approx. Since running them in, they have seriously impressed. You always know good speakers when you start cueing up your favourite tracks one after the other. We had a pair of Dali Mentor 6's previous, and found that sibilence was a problem. Artists such as George Michael were practically unlistenable, not that they didn't have bags of bass, but the top end at times was was to sharp. Not the same problems with the Jade's, out of the box, a little, but run in, no such problems.

Their soundstage is totally amazing, and stereo separation is definitely as good as it gets without spending a hell of allot more. The Wharfdale's have our seal of approval, totally amazing sound, seriously impressive. I can't resist trying different type of music, to see how it sounds, and that's an impressive thing. Euro for euro, these are a bargain.

Talkback

A 5.1 speaker package an be an easy thing to buy, just make sure it's from the same range an all is ok, but is it that simple? We all understand that stereo is an amazing thing, and the sheer quality on offer from modern speakers is just staggering. Listening in stereo is far different than in 5.1, as the centre, tears and subwoofer kick in to bombard us with all the action, to enhance our

experience, to draw us closer to the movie, and it's brilliant. But do we need the same serious speakers all around.

I remember a review of the Boston Acoustics A360 speakers, four in total with their A Series centre speaker and sub, and it was total nirvana, indeed I heard this arrangement in action, and it blew me away, but was I listening more than seeing. When we watch a movie, our brain uses a hell of allot of processing power from a visual aspect, and it has been scientific proven that our

others senses, hearing in this case are diminished. I don't know about you, but I've often watched a movie, and my dad who loves movie soundtracks says "the music was good", I didn't hear a note, so engrossed in the movie I couldn't remember a single musical sequence, I am aware of it as the music plays along, but it didn't sink in, so do my speakers need to be of such a standard?

I tried out a little experiment recently, using my Wharfedale Jade 5 speakers, I added the Jade C2 centre speaker as, let's face it, the dialogue is probably the most important so the centre, in my opinion, should be, if possible the largest speaker n the setup. Then I decided to use Wharfedale diamond 122's as rears, and my Polk subwoofer. Initially, I hear a difference, of course I would as I was listening, not watching, mind you, it didn't sound bad, it sounded very good. So I stuck on my favourite movie, Blade Runner" and started watching, by the end credits, as Vangelis was pushing it out, I suddenly noticed, somewhere along the way, I had been sucked into the movie, and the difference between the rears and the fronts, well I stopped noticing it, and just enjoyed the movie. The rears are for an immersive experience, but our minds are focused on what is ahead, and that is the area which has to be perfection, the rears add ambience, and as such, don't need to be high end.

Does this mean our rear speakers are less important, well no, they most certainly are, but the lower range speakers were more than adequate, and of identical sensitivity (oops, another story). It is important to keep the same manufacturer when it comes to 5.1 systems and above, but perhaps Dropping down in range and price isn't a bad thing, indeed, perhaps it diminishes our experience so little, well it doesn't matter as much. Many systems have all the same speakers used for all 4 channels, and it works amazingly well, me, I'd improve the front stereo pair for stereo listening, I love my stereo and it will get used far more to be honest. I'd also get the largest centre from the same range, if a bigger one is available.

I repeated the experience with a 7.2 package, it just got better, to be honest as it should. It's an interesting experiment, but I am so taken with this sort of setup, I'm now saving.

Let us know of your experiences with your system, just drop us an email at [email protected].
