ELASTOMERIC MOUNTS BACKGROUNDVMC offers an extensive range of elastomeric isolationmounts and pads that limit the transmission of struc-ture-borne vibration and impacts. These can beused in a wide variety of applications includingelectronics equipment, engines and gensets, vehicle cab mounts, HVAC equipment andgeneral industrial machinery. Structure-borne shock and vibration can lead tomalfunctions and shortened life ofequipment, not to mention annoy-ance caused by vibrating buildingstructures and generated audiblenoise. VMC’s elastomeric products aredesigned to minimize these events.

Elastomeric compounds are extremely versatile. Rubber is just one commonname for one of the families of materials encompassed by this term. Elastomers canbe cut or molded into almost any shape and are available in a range of stiffnesses tomeet isolation and load-bearing requirements. Elastomers provide inherent dampingof dynamic inputs. VMC has the capability to engineer and produce special designsboth in terms of geometry and elastomeric compound.

Elastomers cannot rust. Properly selected they can resist oil, most industrial chemi-cals, industrial temperatures and the effects of the weather such as sunlight (UV)and ozone. Molded-in metal structures are protectedby coatings or the elastomer itself. Many of VMC’selastomers are color coded to indicate load rating. This permanent, pigmented color permeates thematerial and cannot wear or peel off. Mount rating istherefore easily determined in the field by inspection, even from a distance.

VMC’s engineered elastomeric pads provide excel-lent mid-to-high frequency vibration attenuation asbase mounts in compression. They are economicaland can be tailored to the application in the field.Typical uses include air compressors, business

machines, fans, printing presses, pumps and shears. Bolting throughpad mounts into a supporting floor requires a compliant layer under thebolt head and clearance around the bolt shank. This is to avoid a“short-circuit” for vibration energy through the bolt. Pads can bestacked to create a softer suspension and interleaved with metal platesto increase stability.

To accommodate particular project needs, elastomeric mounts areavailable with various mounting provisions. Specialneeds should be brought to theattention of VMC’s EngineeringDepartment.

In its simplest form, an elastomeric mount is a block of material that will deflect under an applied load.Elastomers include many varieties of rubber, plastics, composite materials and cork. In one form or another,VMC offers all of these. VMC’s line of molded mountsare manufactured from both synthetic and natural rub-bers. They may or may not have metal inserts moldedinto them to provide mounting interfaces and to controlelastic response and stresses.

Like any resilient mounting system, we have a dynamicinput, a desired output, and a box between them thatmodifies the input to the output. The critical factorsnecessary to determine the character of the systemare the supported mass, its approximate center ofgravity and its geometry. These will enable us to deter-mine the static load on each mount. Some types ofequipment impose an additional reaction load againsttheir mounts. Elastically supported engines and motorsthat drive against something that is not on the sameelastic suspension are of particular interest. A goodexample of this is a vehicle engine and transmissionthat drives against the vehicle’s axle and wheels. Someequipment may exhibit a violent shudder upon start-upand shut-down. Inertial reactions of equipment thataccelerate and decelerate quickly may also have to beconsidered. Applied loads that occur infrequently canbe given different consideration than steady state loadsand repetitive loads when selecting a mount based on strength.

From a theoretical point of view, we can select amount by first considering the frequency of the input tobe attenuated. This is usually the lowest frequency, orat least the lowest frequency with amplitude of anyconsequence. We then step back by a factor of 3 ormore to establish a filter point, or suspension naturalfrequency at a lower frequency. We can calculate thedesired spring rate:

ƒn = 1 √K2π m

Expected transmissibility, or in other words, isolationefficiency, can be obtained from the classical transmis-sibility equation for first order systems, or from itsgraphical representation.

Now having a maximum load and target spring rate, the catalog can be searched for an appropriate mount.Given the great variety of mounts that VMC offers, thiscould prove to be a confusing task. A simpler

approach to selection may be rooted less in mathe-matics. VMC’s elastomer mount product line can bedivided along several functional lines.

The decision whether to use flush mounting has muchto do with the user’s thoughts on installation methodand surrounding structures. Flush mounts put lessdemands on the design of the supporting structures.Usually a reasonable flat surface and two simplethrough or tapped holes are all that is required.Sinking the mount into the surface of the supportingstructure may not only save on installed height but alsoplaces side loads into the plane of the support. Thislimits local bending stresses. Mounts that are not flushrequire features in the supporting structure. In particu-lar, the RB, Ring and Bushing series depend onmounting hole and plate geometry to achieve theirrated characteristics. The decision whether to use afail-safe or captive mount is dictated by the end item’susage. Generally, mobile equipment should be captive.A payload in motion is subject to side thrusts anduplifts even if the primary load is in compression.Despite all best efforts, something that is mobile ortransportable may be turned on its side or upsidedown. When it comes to ultimate strength, rubber can-not match metals. For this reason, we do not rely onrubber alone to keep a payload from becoming a sec-ondary projectile. Requirements imposed by code such

as for earthquake (seismic) resistance and wind loadsnecessitate captive, failsafe mounts. Beyond this, spe-cific load-bearing capacity may have to be establishedto meet job requirements. Failsafe does not imply inde-structible. If a specific load requirement exists, or if fail-ure of the metal members may result in a hazard, VMCshould be consulted. An all-attitude mount functions asa resilient member in all directions. The elastic proper-ties in each direction may differ. An all-attitude mount iscaptive. Not all captive mounts are all-attitude. All ofVMC’s captive mounts are all-attitude to some extent.

With the field of possible mounts narrowed based oninstallation preference and function, we can now turnour attention to selecting based on applied load. Thenumbers that VMC publishes are load ratings. They arenot ultimate loads to failure and they are not necessari-ly recommended loads. The nominal suspension natu-ral frequency that we publish in the catalog will beachieved when a mass which applies the rated load issupported on the mount. In most cases, increasing thisload slightly should not be a problem but will result in aslightly lower natural frequency. VMC should be con-sulted when increasing load much over the rated loadis being considered. Applying lighter loads will result ina higher suspension natural frequency. The higher nat-ural frequency, or stiffer, suspension may provide lessattenuation of lower frequency disturbances. In aworst case, it may approach or coincide with a higherdisturbing frequency and result in amplification. For thisreason, we like to look at the suspension natural fre-quency and disturbing frequencies and not simply loadratings. The presence of shocks, transient reactionloads and large amplitude inputs may be good reasonfor backing down from the rated load to add margin.

For most industrial applications, we look to moldedelastomer mounts to provide suspensions between 8 Hzand 35 Hz. Depending on the specifics of the applica-tion, we may require only minimal resistance to sideloads or complete elastic suspension in all directions. Our catalog details off-axis capability or stiffness ratio insome cases. Various axial to radial stiffness ratios canbe achieved with the variety of mounts, from 1:5, through1:1 to 5:1 and beyond. Where there is a question onoff-axis characteristics, VMC should be consulted.

The usage environment dictates the type of elastomerthat should be specified. VMC’s standard products are

listed in usually one but sometimes two “standard”materials. To meet specifics of temperature, extremestrength, enhanced damping, chemical resistance andresistance to ozone and sunlight we can provide manyother materials. With few exceptions, we can mold anymount in our product line in any material that can bemolded. Our manufacturing process is set up so thatwe can produce short run specials sometimes at thesame cost, or with a very slight premium. VMC shouldbe consulted whenever environment is suspected tobe an issue. We offer here some guidelines to ourmost commonly used materials.

Neoprene and Neoprene Blends – Good generalpurpose black-rubber for sustained operating temperatures between -40o and +180oF. Resistant to splashes of most oils and hydraulic fluid and other conditions typical of industrial and engine compartment environments. Our standard material for most industrial mounts.

VMC Color-coded Neoprene and Blended Materials – Good general purpose rubber for mostmoderate service conditions. Particularly favored in theHVAC industry because the material can be colorcoded to indicate mount rating and stiffness. Our stan-dard in our R/RD line and pads.

Silicone – Provides increased operating temperaturerange of -60o to +300oF. Inherently resistant to manychemicals, with the exception of lubricating oil. Lowoutgassing. For this reason it is favored for military andspace applications. Overall, silicone provides greaterdynamic damping than many other materials. It alsocan be color coded to indicate load capacity.

VMC Weather-Resistant (WR) Blended Material –Similar to our color-coded neoprene and blendedmaterials, it offers the same color coding to indicateload rating. Upper limit on service temperature isextended to +250oF and has greater resistance to sun-light (UV) ozone, salt water and acids. For this reason itmay be preferred when extreme outdoor conditions are encountered such as on exposed rooftops in some locations.

Nitrile – Generally a good substitute for our neoprene, blended and color-coded materials when significantexposure to oils and hydraulic fluids are present.

EPDM – A good substitute for our neoprene, blendedand color-coded materials when extended temperaturerange, improved chemical resistance or low-tempera-ture flexibility is needed.

VMC Extreme High Temperature Silicone – Capableof continuous operation to +485oF.

VMC High Damped Silicone – Capable of producingmounts with dynamic damping factors approaching25% of critical depending on type of input.

Other Specialty Materials – Fluorosilicone,Fluorocarbon, ECO, HNBR, Polyacrylates and naturalrubber to name just a few.

Elastomeric mounts will inherently provide somedegree of dynamic damping. Damping limits responsepeaks when a machine momentarily passes throughresonance such as during start-up. It limits ringing dueto shocks and transients. Damping is a property of thematerial and also affected by the character of thedynamic input. It is velocity dependent so high fre-quency, large displacement inputs will result in propor-tionally the greatest damping out of a given material.Damping operates by drawing energy out of the sys-tem in the form of heat. Damped mounts will warmwith operation. In the extreme case, heavily dampedmounts operated for extended periods of time undersevere conditions or near resonance will overheat. Thiswill shorten the mount’s overall service life. The level ofdamping should be appropriate to the application.Above all else, mounts should not be operated in aresonance condition for extended periods of time. Inmost industrial applications, the moderate amount ofdamping provided by our standard materials combinedwith operation well above suspension resonance willprovide excellent performance and service life. Certainmilitary applications necessitate high damping materi-als in order to control broad-spectrum random vibra-tion and shock. The use of high damping material mustbe combined with good engineering analysis and test-ing particularly when the suspension natural frequencymust reside within a narrow band. Damping makes themount appear stiffer dynamically.

RH/RHDSERIES

APPLICATIONS

• Static load range of 35-4000 lbs. offers solutionsfor a wide range of suspended equipment.

• Choice of deflection provides accurate selection ofmounts based on equipment requirements.

• Hanger capacities can be mixed to accommodateequipment with uneven weight distribution.

• Elastomer-coated mounts are color-coded for easy identification.

• Steel housing provides durability and stability.

ELASTOMERIC HANGERS

RH/RHD Series elastomeric isolation hangers offer costeffective solutions for the isolation of suspended equip-ment. These hangers are designed to solve high fre-quency attenuation problems in a protected space orradiating from that space to surrounding locations. These isolators are ideal for suspended piping, duct-work, air handling units, and HVAC equipment.

The equipment and piping are supported from vibrationhangers consisting of a steel box with an internal elas-tomeric element. The RH Series offer deflections to1/4” and the RHD Series offer deflections to 1/2”. Fourdifferent sizes provide load capacity ranges from 10 to4000 lbs. – offering accurate hanger selection even forunits with unequal weight distribution.

The RH/RHD Series isolation elements are molded ofcolor-coded elastomer – permitting instant identificationof loading capacities. These units are molded with anintegral bushing to prevent the elastomeric elementsfrom coming in contact with the isolator housings. Allelements are molded in durometers or hardness tomatch actual assigned loads.
