KOREN – E2E Performance

• KESG’s NCA Project: Traffic Engineering for Performance Improvement on KOREN/APII– Triggering Vigorous Activities of Cooperative Research Group (KESG) in KORE

N– Triggering Research Collaboration between KOREN & QGPOP– Improvement of Network Engineering Capability for KOREN– Sub-subjects: Measurement, Performance, Routing, Security

• KESG’s E2E Performance Initiative– Deploy a measurement infrastructure over KOREN and with Internati

onal peers– Identify performance bottleneck and tune performance

• With above 2 activities we(KESG) will support researchers requiring high bandwidth/performance

Page 4: KOREN & E2E Performance Initiative

KOREN - Update

• Network Upgrade : Completed– Seoul-Taejon : 2 2.5G POS with 1.6T OLS– Taejon-Taegu-Pusan-Kwangju : 2.5G POS with EON– Seoul-Suwon : still 155M ATM with PP15K

• Members– 40 institutions : 21 universities, 19 research institutions

• By year’s end : 20 more institutions will be connected– Access link : 32 155M ATM, 9 GbE connections

• By year’s end : 5-10 more GbE connections will replace 155 ATM ones

Page 5: KOREN & E2E Performance Initiative

APII/TEIN - Update

• Separate projects, but connected to KOREN

• TEIN Upgrade Still Negotiated– TEIN(RENATER 3-KOREN) : at least 45M or

more– TEIN Extension to MY : at least 45M or more

• Additional APII Circuits Negotiated– CN-KR : ?

KOREN/APII/TEIN - Future

• Network Upgrade– 2.5G POS planned between Seoul and Suwon– Additional nodes to completely cover the nation

• More Members– More GbE connections for more members– Toward a total of 80 – 100 institutions

• APII/TEIN Upgrade– APII : more than 1G?– TEIN : 155M? 622M?– Extended TEIN to MY : 45M? 155M?– APII Link to CN?

• Remember that all these can be achieved by users.

KOREN – KESG

• KOREN Engineering Study Group– Voluntary participation of members in study of KOREN and AP

II/TEIN Engineering• KHU, KU, CHNU, CNU, KAIST, KJIST, CJNU, HYU, etc

– Closely working with QGPOP group of Kyushu with focus on APII/Genkai link

– Closely working with Measurement WG of ANF– This year’s project granted by NCA

• Traffic Engineering for Performance Improvement on KOREN/APII

Page 14: KOREN & E2E Performance Initiative

KESG – Performance Initiatives

• KESG’s NCA Project: Traffic Engineering for Performance Improvement on KOREN/APII– Triggering Vigorous Activities of Cooperative Research Group (KESG) in

KOREN– Triggering Research Collaboration between KOREN & QGPOP– Improvement of Network Engineering Capability for KOREN– Sub-subjects: Measurement, Performance, Routing, Security

• KESG’s E2E Performance Initiative– Deploy a measurement infrastructure over KOREN and with internation

al peers– Identify performance bottleneck and tune performance– Collaborating first with CRL’s performance project for APII/Genkai and

TransPAC links to share each other’s measurement infrastructure and its data

– Also planning the TEIN

Page 15: KOREN & E2E Performance Initiative

KESG – PMI

• Performance Measurement Infrastructure to measure– N2n(Node-to-node)

• NetFlow format data• SNMP• Focused on link layer performance

– Eg2eg(Edge-to-edge)• Path measurement from ingress to egress• Active measurement• Focused on network/transport performance

Page 16: KOREN & E2E Performance Initiative

KESG – PMI

• Components– Measurement Client (MC)

• to measure performance metrics

– Data Analysis Module (DAM)• To analyze measured values

– Database (DB)• to save analyzed values

– Visualization Module (VM)• To visualize analyzed values

– Query Module (QM)• to show past values on demand

KESG - PMI

• Cannot cover the whole E2E performance• We need more end-users’ participation in the KESG P

MI to make researchers get more performance for their research

• This collaboration will help make government feel importance of R+E network and researches based upon R+E network in Korea which all our efforts depend upon.

• We need a well-planned cooperation KOREN network engineers and applcation users. Thanks!
