KeynoteSpeechesKeynoteSpeechIPresenceandSocialObligation:AnEssayontheShareJamesFERGUSON(StanfordUniv.)Inarecentbook,Ianalyzedthefigureoftheshareasaprincipleofdistributionofsocialprotectionpaymentsor“cashtransfers”intheglobalSouthingeneral,andinsouthernAfricainparticular.Notingthattoday’sexistingschemesofdistributionare(likeall“social”schemesbeforethem)limitedbyprinciplesofnation-statemembership,Iconcludedwiththesuggestionthatitmaybepossibletodetectnewlogicsofsocialobligationemergingthatworknotaccordingtoalogicofcitizenshipandnationalmembership,butaccordingtoaprinciplethatIcalled“presence.”Thispaperisanattempttoelaboratethisconception,andtodevelopamorecompleteaccountofhowsuchanunderstandingofpresencemightprovideabasisbothforanexpandedsenseofsocialobligationandformoreinclusionaryformsofpolitics.KeynoteSpeechIIOtherswithoutHistory:organismsasagility-shiftingactorsinthetrajectoryofcapitalAnnaTSING(Univ.ofCaliforniaatSantaCruz)ThislectureoffersatributetoEricWolf’sEuropeandthePeoplewithoutHistory—withatwist.The“otherswithouthistory”hereareotherlivingbeings:plants,animals,andevenwatermolds.Thelectureshowshowthehistoricalbecomingofotherorganismsforgespathwaysthatmimic,block,andtransformthetrajectoriesofconventionallyrecognizedhistorymakers.Ihavechosenpests,weeds,andpathogens:theyareentangledinhumanaffairs,buttheylackthedocilityofdomesticcreaturesorthemalleabilityweimagineof“naturalresources,”waitingforhumanuse.Becausetheyforceourhands,wecan’tignoretheiractivity.Theirin-your-faceactionsseemagoodplacetoseecross-specieshistoricaltrajectoriesinthemaking.Non-humanorganismsalsomakehistory,butnotundertheconditionsoftheirownchoosing.
