The Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute(KERI)is agovernment-supported research institute specialized in electrical engineering,with its main campus located in Changwon and branch campuses in Ansan andUiwang, Gyeonggi-do.
Since its foundation in 1976, KERI has made great contributions to the devel-opment of the national economy and quality of life improvements throughresearch and development achievements in fundamental technologies for diversefields including power plants, heavy electricity apparatuses, energy, new materi-als, superconductivity and electrical medical devices. KERI has also played a keyrole in improving domestic heavy electrical equipment industry export competi-tiveness, as one of top three testing and certification organizations in the world.
As president of KERI, my current focus is onmy responsibility to ensure world-class R&Dcompetitiveness by transforming each R&Ddepartment into small and strong R&D teamsunder “the First in Korea, Best in the World” slo-gan. With a strategic R&D target in low-carbon,high reliability and multidisciplinary technology,KERI is focused on the research and developmentof major technologies like advanced power grids,electrical propulsion, HVDC and testing & certifi-cation for heavy electrical equipment in its questto become one of the top global research insti-tutes.

Advanced PowerGrid R&D Climate change is the most challenging issue ofthe 21st century. The core smart grid business forlow carbon environmentally sound development isdesigned to help reduce electricity consumptionby up to 10% by 2030. HVDC R&D Given the rapid growth of renewable energy inpower grids and the necessity of grid interconnec-tions between countries and continents, thedeployment of reliable long-distance power trans-mission technology is currently in high demand forpower systems. Nowadays, the world is confronting the crisis of en-vironmental pollution symbolized by the climatic change and an exhaustion of natural resources rep-resented by expensive oil prices. The superconduc-tivity which is technologies of low loss, high efficien-cy and environment-friendly will contribute to these crises overcome. For this purpose, we are going to develop superconducting technologies focused on generation, transmission and storage.

Korea should thus establish a low-ener-gy, low carbon society to aid with energy securityand environmental preservation. KERI provides these services in premium testingfacilities, and are now globally recognized as a testing andcertification body for technical capability according to inter-national standards. KERI is accredited by the KoreaLaboratory Accreditation Scheme(KOLAS), which signedthe International Laboratory Accreditation CooperationMutual Recognition Arrangement(ILAC-MRA ) in the scopeof heavy electric equipment. Furthermore, KERI is globallyaccepted as a KAS product certification body, a regularmember of the Short-Circuit Testing Liaison(STL) group, anIECEE certification body and a product certification bodywith ACCREDIA of Italy. KERI’s test reports and certificatesare accepted by a host of member nations around theworld as well as the Korean market.

▶ KAS Product Certification Body(Changwon and Ansan)KERI has been accredited by KAS(Korea AccreditationScheme) as a third-party product certification body for electri-cal equipment. Based on this accreditation, KERI can issueproduct certifications and documents which assure producttype conformity. Our certification schemeprovides KERI-LV, KERI-HV and alsoKERICERT/3 in accordance with the ISO/IECGuide 65.
