DEAR COMMUNITY,

what a journey it has been since TechQuartier opened

its doors, just about two years ago. Back then, with

the smell of the freshly crafted wooden furniture still

in the air, our little team of four embarked on a journey

to create a startup hub that could rival the ones from

other global cities, while also tracing its own path.

Two years in, the furniture has lost a bit of its original

luster, but our determination to make the vision a

reality is as strong as ever. What fuels this fire is the

belief in our goal, to truly have an impact on a large

scale and to empower entrepreneurs to change the

world. It is also the support we get from all our sta-

keholders, community members & partners, without

whom this ship would have simply never sailed.

We owe it to you, those who want to see TechQuartier

succeed, those who believe in the entrepreneurial

spirit and its potential to alter the course of history,

to tell the story. This yearbook will become an annual

tradition from now on. In it, we highlight important

milestones and success stories, and share the pro-

gress we have made towards our goals, as determined

now as we were on Day 1. Because it always is.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT TECHQUARTIER

Founded in 2016, TechQuartier (TQ) is

a Frankfurt-based startup hub and

cross-industry innovation platform.

Now established as the main access

point to the local FinTech cluster, it

is the reference point both for local

startups wishing to grow their business

and for corporates aiming to collaborate

and leverage their disruptive potential.

TQ offers a complete innovation experience made of flexible coworking

spaces across multiple locations, ac-

celeration programs, community events,

matchmaking with corporates and

investors, along with access to an

international network of partner hubs.

TechQuartier and Frankfurt were together

named Germany‘s FinTech Hub as part of

the Digital Hub Initiative (de:hub), run by

the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs

and Energy.

AI HUB The AI hub, announced in September by Minister Tarek Al-Wazir, will

comprise of four main elements:

The aim is to integrate and further develop activities and institutions

on AI in the Rhein Main region, to showcase the existing strong AI

expertise in the region and build new expertise, and to successfully

facilitate the commercialisation of AI expertise.

Launched in November 2018 in partnership

with leading impact investment advisor

Finance in Motion, the GreenTech Hub is the

first satellite hub of TechQuartier. Its aim is

to strengthen the green startup ecosystem in

the Rhein Main region and establish itself as

the region’s foremost innovation platform and

co-working space for startups in the green

tech, clean tech, green finance and sustainable

development sectors. The objectives for 2019

include:

Community building, including events, research conferences and workshops

Implementation of programs, for example accelerators, matchmaking and awards

Set up of a dedicated fund

Set up of a Data Lab based on a shared data pool.

Frankfurt am Main is an international financial centre

boasting a high concentration of outstanding univer-

sities. The FinTech Digital Hub Frankfurt builds upon

these locally founded strenghts as it unites players

from the financial sector and the entrepreneurial scene.

Innovative ideas are developed into market-ready

products, with de:hub acting as a catalyst between

local and international actors.

Tradeshift, a leader in supply chain payments

and marketplaces, raised $250 million in a

Series E funding round led by Goldman Sachs

and PSP Investments, bringing the company’s

Smartsteuer announced partnership with ING to facilitate how its

clients submit tax returns. Later in September, SmartSteuer announced

CREDITSHELF RAISES €16.5M THROUGH IPO; BECOMES PART OF GERMANY’S 1ST AND LARGEST DIGITAL SME FINANCING

In July, German mid-market lending platform

Creditshelf AG successfully closed its IPO on

the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. In addition,

they launched the first digital securitisation

of SME loans in Germany.

VAAMO IS ACQUIRED BY MONEYFARM

Vaamo, Germany’s first digital wealth manager, was

acquired by Moneyfarm in November. Founded in 2013,

Vaamo was a pioneer in the field of robo-advice, and

notably partnered with n26 back in 2016 to enable users

to make stock-market investments through the app.

SINGAPORE EXCHANGE (SGX) PARTNERS WITH SMARTKARMA, ROLLS OUT PILOT PROGRAM

The cloud-based platform enables SGX-listed

companies to streamline their communication and

data reporting to the institutional, analyst and

A three-month program where early-stage startups

attend various workshops with PwC experts, for free,

to better understand the fundamentals of User Ex-

perience. Using the latest lab equipment (eye-track-

EXPANDING INTO INSURTECH Insurance is an industry ripe for disruption.

Starting with the Global InsurTech Roadshow

in March, we are expanding into this industry

and looking to garner partners along for the

journey. On the back of the Roadshow, an Insur-

Tech program will also be created.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE As use cases start to emerge and industry is

now fully aware and interested to explore its

possibilities, AI is seeing serious traction. TQ

is now working on building the AI Hub; it has

bolstered its team and is orienting its efforts

along the four previously stated strategic axis.

2019INNOVATION ON DEMAND Talking with – and listening to – our stakehold-

ers, and running ten innovation programs in

2018 gave us some ideas on how we can provide

even more value. By customizing our offering

to address specific pain points, or specific

product development stages, and by fully be-

coming an innovation marketplace where TQ

act as the curator, the traditional acceleration

program model is about to get revamped and

upgraded.

SCALING In February, we are publishing ‘’Scaleups in

Europe’’, a study conducted with Goethe Uni-

versity and Yi Shi Foundation where we unveil

some of the key success factors of European

unicorns. The findings will guide us as we help

our own startups become the next big thing,

and as we ourselves, are digging deeper into

FinTech, looking to expand to new industries,

and growing our partner network globally.
