The New Year is usually when people say that they want something new, to meet someone new and to be happy throughout the coming year. Then I thought to myself, every day, as every second passes, it has become the past. So we have a new day or a new year every second. Many people always say they will do something in the New Year. Whether it is to pay more

attention at work, to improve oneself, or to help others. As every second passes these people waste and loose time. We don’t know what will happen in the future and it is impossible to guess. So why wait for the New Year? If you want to better yourself or society do it now, don’t wait for some time in the future. I had the chance to talk with Nong Wan and Nong Yim, they are children that see themselves not just in their neighborhood, or their city or even Thai-land, but on the world stage. I was so impressed with their intentions that I am including their photo in this edition. I am the person who always thinks in short time frames, day by day and how wonderful it is to be living now. I don’t need to wait for a time in the future when I think I will be happier. So enjoy life now and be happy, don’t worry about the future, it will come soon enough.

The Chinese New Year & The 13th Old Phuket Town Festival. From January 28 to the 30th, the annual Old Phuket Town Festival and Chinese New Year celebrations were held in Phuket Town with the cooperation of government, business and individuals. A variety of events celebrating both festivals were held throughout the city. Thalang Rd., Krabi Rd. and Phang Nga Rd, were fi lled with games, activities and food vendors servicing traditional dishes of the era. Those who attended were treated to colorful displays, live music, cultural activities and delicious food.

In today’s restaurants, good food, wide variety of menu choices and excellent service does not mean success. The atmosphere and decor play as much of an important role as the food itself.

I am always at the HomePro Village in Chalong. During my last visit I noticed a new restaurant with a very unique name; Tablespoon Salad & Grill. I stopped in to look around. The atmosphere was so inviting that I just had to sit down.

The open kitchen provided views of the chef preparing dishes and the aromas of food being prepared got my stomach reminding me that it was lunchtime. The attentive waiter offered me a menu. For starters, vegetable salad with a blend of fruit, Strawberry Grilled Chicken salad with a choice of 4 different dressings. From the grill came even more taste bud teasers, BBQ Pork chop with mashed carrots or Salmon with Arabian Sauce. For those looking for something a little simpler, a hearty American breakfast.

After enjoying a wonderful meal the owner of the restaurant Kim (Teerasak Phonngarm) came over to ensure that I was satisfi ed. After we chatted for a while, I asked how he came up with concept and name for the restaurant. Kim always enjoyed cooking, combined with his restaurant experience in the United States, he returned to Thailand and took the best of what he had seen and learned. He used the name “Tablespoon” as it represented eating, food and was easy to remember. Kim personally shops for all ingredients that he uses. “It’s the only way that I can guarantee the best for my customers!” Good food, great service and warm atmosphere, forget about the knife and fork, just remember the “Tablespoon”

Municipality Hello again readers, It’s the new year again, many people say that I would like to have something new, whether it be a new job, a new car, new house, but what about the old stuff? It made me think, are all those old things no longer useful? Then why do we

need to have the Old Phuket Town Festival. Today I have the honor to meet and talk with the head of the Phuket Municipal government, Somjai Suwansupana. She has come to discuss the stories of the past, present and future of Phuket people.

Q: Can we talk about the stories from the past? I hope this does not bore you.

A: Oh no, if we talk about old stories and make our economy in the city better, we should discuss them.

Q: I want you to tell me the history of the Old Phuket Town Festival?

A: Many years ago, Phuket became major tourist destination, primarily for the beaches & oceans. Revenues increased and the economy improved respectively. But life in the city slowly began to stagnate. The slowdown was not quick, but grad-ual, little by little, people began to leave the urban areas to live and work in the beach area shops, restaurants and hotels. The offi cials who oversaw the city then saw the importance of lifestyle com-munities in the city, which still existed. The idea is to build up interest within the city’s commercial districts. The Old Phuket Town Festival was cre-ated to draw people back from the beach areas into Phuket city.

Q: In the past, I saw tourists come to Phuket and go directly to the beach; they bypassed Phuket Town all together. Very recently, I noticed that the tourists are now coming to walk on Thalang Rd., staying at hotels in the city and buying souvenirs in the old town.

A: Yes, we took notice of that in the old town and began managing the urban landscape. For ex-ample, burying electrical cables underground and restoring the old buildings back to the Sino-Portu-guese style. There was cooperation from all sectors of the Community Foundation of the old city. The merchants are seeing an increase in trade in the old town and it is beginning to come to life again.

Q: In the future do you any ideas or strategies for the commercial district of old town and how are you going to implement them? A: Yes in the future we plan to develop sidewalks for site seeing and shopping in the old town area where tourist can touch and experience the atmosphere of Phuket City. We would like to see the plan develop so that tourists could go on self guided tours. Now we are studying and designing walking tracks in Phuket Town areas. The walking tracks will be con-nected and convenient to travel by foot. Maps will be provided through tourist information centers to help bring tourist to attractions and shopping areas.

Q: Today, are you happy with the current develop-ment of the Old Phuket Town area?

A: I must say that I am happy and would thank the local community for cooperating with us. I love my local home and community. Even with the growth of tourism and the infl ux of foreign culture the local people in Phuket have had to change themselves to adapt to foreign cultures. I must say that to change the culture in all of the local Phuket people is still dif-fi cult, we must have roots that link us to the past in a way that the identities of the people of Phuket pass it forward to the children of the next generation. I am happy to see

These are the ideas of the head of the Phuket Municipal government. These ideas still foster the identity of Phuket people; love local home. This is one of the most famous noodle shops and well known by tourists. This restau-rant has passed the test of time. The current owners are the children of the original owners. It is safe to say that Sapam noodles will be here for generations to come! The restaurant is located at Ban Sapam area. If you are coming from the airport, travel straight past By-Pass Rd toward Phuket town, approx 2 km; look for Ban Sapam soi on your right. A second dish worth trying is the fried oysters with secret Phuket ingrediates. Yummy!

2. Ko-Yoon noodle (Mee Ko-Yoon)

At the Surin traffi c Circle by municipal market or Bann Chan market you will fi nd Ko-Yoon Noodle., The owner Ko-yoon, is an outgoing fellow that always greets his guests and those who walk by his restaurant. Ko-yoon provides good and friendly service. The fragrance of shrimp soup full of herbs and spices fi ll the air. Ko-Yoon attention to detail can be seen in his heart shaped pork balls. You might say Ko-Yoons’ love is in every bowl of soup!

3. Ao-Kae noodle (Mee Ao-Kae)

The fi rst time I heard of this noodle shop was about the strange way orders were placed. As you place your order, the owner sings the order back to you. Your order may sound something like this, “The Hokkien noodle stir fry with rice noodles or Phuket white rice noodles, with eggs to have a rich taste.” Ok, it sounds better in Thai, but you get the idea! Opening late in the day and closing early in the evening keeps this restaurant busy. Make a plan to go but be

patient when you arrive as many people dine here. Located at Phoonphol Road this restaurant has been in the neighborhood a very long time and is well known with all the locals. In the past this was the pier/bay area but now is turning into a residential area known as Ao-kae.

4. Ton-Pho Noodel (Mee Ton-Pho) Well known for their pho noodles, long time customers contin-ue to return for a pho that tastes as good today as it did when they fi rst opened. Located at the Clock Tower roundabout, it is not diffi cult to fi nd. Order a soft-fried Hokkien noodle

garnished with herbs and spices along with shallots. A glass of cold black tea is as great complement. The restaurant is always full of tourists and Phuket locals. If you are hungry, and the restaurant looks busy, don’t worry, their hands are always frying noodles. Sit back and watch the chef create your dish.

The Eco-Green device works smarter by detecting the saturation of the thermo-dynamics of the air conditioner used to cool a room. When the assigned temperature is reached the Eco-Green device turns off the compressor until it is needed again to cool air. Thai Supermodel 2011 contest. Thank you, Nong Yim and Nong Wan for providing us the opportunity to photograph you. Our theme was Gift and Toy, and what better way to represent our theme then to have our models dressed up as Barbie Dolls. The location of our shoot was the Homepro Village in Chalong, Tablespoon Salad & Grill and Kitchen Plus Phuket. High winds made the outdoor portion of our shoot very diffi cult. Our makeup artist, Arjan Boo had to take extra special care of Nong Yim and Nong Wan. It was quickly apparent that our models were real professionals as they worked through some very dif-fi cult shots. Our photographer P’Ri kept his camera busy and captured some beautiful photos.We would also like to thank the staff at Homepro Village who provided us a wonderful venue and facilitated our every need.

The International Horticultural Exposition.

Gardening is seeing resurgence in popularity, but unlike grandmothers simple fl ower garden, present day gardeners are creating living works of art. From homes to corporate offi ces the general theme is a combination of man and nature.

The International Horticultural Expo held in Chiang Mai, which runs from December 14, 2011 to March 14, 2012, promotes tourism and is an integral part of cultivating a green conscience. It also honors His Majesty King Bhumibol. The Horticultural Expo features various plants and fl owers from around the world that are choreographed in creative and decorative displays. Some displays are so large that it is diffi cult to take everything in.



The expo is separated into zones from different coun-tries. Flowers & plants that are seldom or never seen in Thailand provide great photo opportunities. As the evening approaches and the temperature drops, the expo takes on a new life with plants and fl owers that come alive with cooler air.

Both domestic and interna-tional tourists return to this expo many times throughout its duration as there is always something new to see. If you are a horticul-turalist or someone who just enjoys natural beauty this is one festival that should not be missed.

With Chinese New Year celebrations happening during the Old Phuket Town Festival, Phuket town was full of food,

music and activities. By day the streets were fi lled with merchants selling everything from to food to New Year decorations. In some areas there was so much activ-ity; it was diffi cult to cross the street. But as the evening came on, the streets were fi lled with the sounds of music as crowds’ descended down onto Phang Nga Road and Thalang Road.

There was a busy hum at the Dragon Courtyard where activities and music kept onlookers occupied. The glow of beautiful Chinese lanterns decorated the streets and shop houses providing alluring photo opportunities. Every year see’s these festivals growing in size. Organizers will be kept busy providing more activities to an expanding age group. Phuket, with its’ warmth, safety and entertaining festivals is set-ting itself up to become a world class city.

goals but at the end of the day do nothing. Feel the passion of your dreams and they will bring you forward, as two intelligent, beautiful and active women have done. In this edition of Konphuket Magazine I am going to introduce you to two such women.

From the stage of the Thai Supermodel 2011, Konphuket Mag-azine had the opportunity to interview Nong Yim (U-rai-sri) and Nong Wan (Vanessa P. Herrmann). Both from Phuket, they are 2 of the fi nal 20 selected from 2000 women. Today we get to talk with them to better understand where they come from and why they want to become a super model. to next year’s competition. Even though she did not win, she gained some very valuable knowledge and is proud to have made it to the fi nal 10.

Nong Wan (Vanessa P. Herrmann ) at 175 cm tall, stands above her peers. She is second year undergraduate student from Ramhamhaeng University and alumni of Satree Phuket school. Her intentions in life are to become a model. The Thai Supermodel contest is an opportunity to learn about her future career. In 2008 she attended the competition but only made into the top 40. Nong Wan felt she could have done better had she made it to the top 10 and been given a seat in the Super Model training course.

In this year’s competition, Nong Yim was voted the most Photogenic Model. As they did not win the contest, the experience has brought them closer to reaching their goals of a career in modeling or the entertainment industry. Both girls agreed that this was an important step in their lives. Nong Yim and Nong Wan are examples of taking your dreams and making it a reality. Everyone at Phuket wishes them the best for the future and to achieving their dreams.

นองยม อไรศร วตรสงข สาวสวยรางสง ดวยสวนสงถง 178 ซม. กาลงศกษาอยชนม. 4 ทโรงเรยนเฉลมพระเกยรตสมเดจพระศรนครนทร ภเกต จากการพดคยนองยมเลาใหฟงวาตนเองมความสนใจในการเดนแบบอยแลวเพยงแตยงไมมประสบการณการไปสมครประกวดครงนกเพอหาประสบการณหากยงไมไดเขารอบกกลบมาพฒนาตวเองแลวเมอพรอมกจะไปใหมแตไดเขารอบ 20 คนสดทายกรสกดใจมากเพราะในชวตยงไมเคยประกวดเวทไหนมากอนเลย สวนนองวล วลเณซา พวง แฮรมนน สวนสง 175 ซม. สาวสวยชนปท 2 จากมหาวทยาลยรามคาแหง ศษยเการวโรงเรยนสตรภเกต เลาใหกบเราฟงวาตนเองมความมงมนและตงใจทจะเปนนางแบบอยแลว และการประกวดครงน กเหมอนเปนโอกาสในสายงานเดนแบบดงนนจงตองทาใหเตมท นองวลเคยไดสมครเขาประกวดเมอประมาณป 2008 เขารอบสงสดคอ 40 คนสดทายทวประเทศ แตไมไดเขารวมเกบตวกเลยกลบมาเตรยมตวเองใหพรอมกวาเดมโดยการ ออกกาลงกาย ดแลสขภาพ แลวปนกไดผานเขารอบ 20 คนสดทายไดเกบตวรสกดใจมาก
