CONFIGURATIONS AND PARAMETRICS ACCELERATE DEVELOPMENTSince implementing SOLIDWORKS design and simulation solutions, Končar-MES has shortened its product development cycles by 30 to 40 percent, enabling the company to boost throughput and expand its product offering. Češljaš attributes much of these productivity gains to SOLIDWORKS design configuration tools, which allow Končar-MES to create entire families of motors from a base design, and the parametric nature of SOLIDWORKS software, which makes design changes quick and easy.

“Although the majority of our business involves custom motor development, we’re able to realize time reductions with SOLIDWORKS software,” Češljaš says. “We’ve been able to shorten development time from weeks to days because even though we’re developing different motors, there are similarities from motor to motor that lead to greater efficiencies in 3D. Since moving to SOLIDWORKS design software, we’ve increased design reuse across different assemblies, leveraged design configurations to easily create varying motor sizes from the initial design, and taken advantage of parametric design to accelerate and simplify design changes.”

CUTTING WEIGHT WHILE MAINTAINING STRENGTHIn addition to shortening development cycles with SOLIDWORKS design software, Končar-MES uses SOLIDWORKS Simulation software to conduct linear static stress analyses to optimize motor assembly designs. “We manufacture a lot of cast metal parts,” Češljaš explains. “With SOLIDWORKS Simulation tools, we’ve been able to optimize some of our assemblies, cutting 10 to 20 percent of the weight while maintaining strength.

Challenge:Speed up the development of electric motors and related products to boost throughput, support growth, and expand into new markets.

Solution:Implement SOLIDWORKS Professional design and SOLIDWORKS Simulation analysis software solutions.

Benefits:• Cut development time by 30 to 40 percent• Reduced motor weight by 10 to 20 percent• Supported annual business growth of 5 to 15

percent• Launched new HVAC-focused business

“SOLIDWORKS Simulation software is helping us reduce overall weight in electric motor

designs without compromising performance, which leads to greater customer satisfaction regardless of the type of application required.”

— Ivan Češljaš, Design and Technology Manager

Končar-MES Inc. designs and manufactures electric motors, fans, and electrical drives. Based in Croatia and part of the Končar Electrical Industries Group, the company has earned its reputation as a quality supplier of electric motors, including three-phase motors, single-phase motors, brake motors, flameproof motors, and servomotors, over the past 60 years. With capacity to manufacture more than 150,000 electromotors annually, Končar-MES has expanded its business in both domestic and international markets, with 60 to 70 percent of its production for export.

To support growth, Končar-MES had to expand its production lines, develop new products that tap into new markets, acquire new manufacturing technologies, and invest in 3D product development tools, according to Design and Technology Manager Ivan Češljaš. “Until 2006, we used AutoCAD® 2D design tools to develop our products,” Češljaš recalls. “That’s when we decided to transition from 2D to 3D to speed up development, increase use of standardized parts, improve accuracy, and save time preparing data for machining.”

Končar-MES evaluated the leading 3D design packages before standardizing on SOLIDWORKS® Professional design software and SOLIDWORKS Simulation analysis software. The electric motor manufacturer chose SOLIDWORKS software because the user interface is intuitive, finite element analysis (FEA) and CAD capabilities are completely integrated within a single modeling environment, and the design configuration tools are very robust.

“We chose SOLIDWORKS software because our evaluation showed it provided the optimal solution,” Češljaš says. “SOLIDWORKS software provides all of the benefits of a 3D modeling environment, and it’s easier to make design changes and use the same parts in different assemblies using SOLIDWORKS software. In short, we believed SOLIDWORKS software would best support our growth objectives, allowing us to boost throughput and expand into new markets.”

“Whether used to operate a winch on a ship, support ventilation systems, or drive rotary tables, lighter motors are constantly in demand,” Češljaš adds. “When we design an electric motor, we have to anticipate all of the myriad potential applications. The lighter that we can make our motors in terms of weight, the more customer uses will be supported. SOLIDWORKS Simulation software is helping us reduce overall weight in electric motor designs without compromising performance, which leads to greater customer satisfaction regardless of the type of application required.”

EXPANDING INTO HVAC MARKETThe transition to SOLIDWORKS 3D design not only has supported annual business growth of 5 to 15 percent at Končar-MES, it’s also helped the electric motor manufacturer expand into new markets by providing greater throughput. For example, Končar-MES has entered the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) market, leveraging its high-quality blower motors as the foundation of its new HVAC products.

“Because SOLIDWORKS solutions have allowed us to boost throughput and increase the number of products that we can produce, we’ve developed impellers, housings, and other HVAC assemblies and components for use with our motors,” Češljaš says. “With SOLIDWORKS software, we are improving development of our traditional products while pursuing new business opportunities and markets at the same time.”

By using SOLIDWORKS design and simulation tools to realize greater throughput, Končar-MES has expanded into new markets, including the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) market, where it leverages its high-quality blower motors to develop new HVAC products.
