Commodore’s Message
And so it begins,
Many of you have heard me say I have some reservations regarding my skill set and how they will aid me and
the Club as I begin my service as Commodore. I have to remember ages ago when I took over administration
of the race program how much i had to learn and yet I continually got both thanks and congratulations for
my efforts. In my logical mode, I know that I have a get-‘er-done attitude and also know i am a decent
problem solver. These will hopefully offset my penchant for, say, forgetting people’s names even if I’ve
known them for years. I’m sure, like all Commodores that preceded me, I will just assume the attitude that I
will work to the best of my abilities and strengths to keep our Club happy and prospering. I will continue to
always appreciate your consideration and support.
As we thank Paul Richardson for his service the last two years, I want to recognize his success as well as
that of the Board and members at large in advancing those goals in so many ways. Through their efforts we
have increased our presence in the community and are regularly seeing, at least at OSIRs, an increase in
people showing up to sail the lake. While it may not immediately increase our membership, the fact that the
Club is more recognizable to the community as an active organization with a lot to offer should ultimately
pay dividends. I also have come to appreciate the recent years how we come together as a family to support
each other in so many diverse ways. I continue to see our members step up to help, regardless of how minor
or extraordinary the need. We’ve had our share of both and I don’t expect the situation to change but it
reflects a greater connection than our simple love of our Club’s main purpose.
I also should thank Bob Robinson for his hard work helping keep the Club boats crewed up and being our
most active “greeter”. You all have him to blame for getting me hooked on sailing and there are quite a few
others that got their first taste sailing on Tranquillity Base. He is tireless in his efforts to make new arrivals
welcome. He is also been dedicated the work of creating a slate of candidates for the Board. I am excited to
be working with one such Board and they should all feel honored that Bob thought them worthy and
capable. I hope we can all make a difference.

Commodore’s message continues:
Next month, there is no Board meeting but some of the things we are looking forward to for 2018 are
planning for the 34th(!) annual Konocti Cup (4/28/18), our annual Crab Feed (2/3/18), adding another
Dorn Bay overnight. We also now have Club burgees and are working on an order of Club Shirts-not regatta
shirts but ones that help you represent your Club here and abroad. And speaking of representing: we may
enter a boat into the Kelseyville Xmas parade. Let’s have a fun and safe holiday and keep sailing!!

ROUND AND ROUND WE GO!
Howdy sailors …. it is good to be back in the race director role. The new board is now in place for next year
and I, will have a trial run with the Turkey Race to get back into the flow of the vice- comm. position for our
next season.
We will be trying out some new possibilities with our racing next year. The declining numbers nationwide
for sailing events is affecting our club also and we are considering a number of new ideas. Due to the small
fleet sizes, struggling to turn out the minimum of 3 boats to start a race is now a challenge. We are
considering combining the fleets together again for the buoy races, and or starting races with as little as two
boats, (match racing), a possible long race that includes a loop around Rattelsnake Island, a change in date
for the Monster race, (Lakeport and back), to a possible time with more wind and the possibility of another
permanent sailing day each week, most likely a weekend day to include those who are at work all weekdays. I
am interested in any ideas that club members have and appreciate you saying hi and, “Bob, here is an idea
for you.”
It is important to remind ourselves that the racing we do is secondary to the enjoyment of sailing and
socializing together. We are not here training for the Americas Cup, we are here sailing, racing and club
building with friends and new members. The practice races on Wednesday and the weekend races, buoy and
long, are about becoming a better sailor first and finishing first is secondary. I know how big of a challenge
this is because it is one of my biggest challenges also.
We have a great, but small sailing club and we need all the help we can get from any of our members. It is
always exciting to look ahead to a new season and hope to see all of you on the lake soon! We are lucky to
have such a full service sailing club in a small country area like Lake County …. Come on out, bring a friend
and keep the good times rolling and round and round we will go!!

MINUTES OF BOARD MEETING 11/08/2016
Call To Order: By Paul Richardson - 13:01
Paul Richardson, Brad King, Bob Robinson, Tom Malley, Val Adase, John Diederich and Don Ford were in
attendance with guest Cecil . Chet Britz and Bill MacDougall were unable to attend. The October meeting
minutes were approved after a motion by Tom Malley and a second by Brad King.
Treasurer Report:
Bill MacDougall will email the treasurer report to the board members at a later date.
Vice Commodore’s Report: By Brad King
The Commodore’s Cup was well attended except by the wind. Chet Britz, on Lakota, maneuvered his way to
the win with Brad King as crew. Last long race of the year is the Turkey Race on Saturday November 18th,
possibly with a get together after racing.
Membership Chair Report:
No new members that anyone is aware of this month. Chet Britz will be busy with
December-February with renewals and sign ups. A reminder was mentioned about dues waiver for
new members in 2018 that was voted in at our October meeting.

Media Update:
Val Adase (our new promotion person) will be giving the board updates each meeting
about our website and newsletter. No changes with the website at this time. Any suggestions,
submissions or ideas by the membership on what we want in or out of the newsletter are
welcomed. Sailboats for sale by non-club members and/or club members in the newsletter was
discussed and given a go ahead. This will give our members first shot at them if interested.
Articles and new submissions have a deadline of the 3rd Wednesday of the month for the newsletter.
Social Chair Report:
Dropping Treasure Hunt and Sunday sails and having other sailing games instead was discussed
and may come to fruition this year. Adding another Dorn Bay overnight was discussed.
Brad brought up putting a Google calendar link on our website.
Brad will reserve Buckingham for the Crab Feed. Paul (pretty much) volunteered to take charge of
the Crab Feed. Praises went out to the kids from Middletown for their work at last year’s feed.
Lunch on the Lake events are popular at Richmond Park and we will keep having them. TJ will be
putting together the calendar again for 2018 and we need to remind him so he can start with the
known events, i.e., Crab Feed, K Cup, Buoy Races and other confirmed events.
Old Business:
Never too early to start on the Konocti Cup preparations. Items discussed were: shirt designs, ice
bags, brag flags and sponsors. The half page ad in Latitude was approved not to exceed $600 after
a motion by John Diederich and a second by Brad King. Last year’s ad had pictures of the 3
winners. The 2017 winner’s pictures will be put on the ad. There was no multi-hull winner so it
was decided that the ½ Cup winner’s picture (John Todd) will be included. Val will look for

pictures and send to Chet because he has the base ad. Burgees are for sale now for $20 each.
TJ is working on awards to be presented at the Crab Feed.
Paul Richardson relinquished his duties by presenting Brad King with the Commodore flag and Tom Malley
with the Secretary flag. (Thank you Paul and Julie for all your service to the club these past years.)
New Business:
Tags on awards are different and Brad will see if Disney can supply the different tags consistently even if we
have to buy a supply and provide them for engraving. We don’t want all awards to have the same tag but
each award should have its own specific tag. Chet and Brad will work on what awards we need for this
season .
Decorating a sailboat and entering the Kelseyville Christmas in the Country Parade was discussed and will
be great event to promote our club. This will be spearheaded by Brad and the rest of us will follow his lead.
Promoting weekend sails and committing 3 boats for prospective and new members was discussed. Creating
some kind of structure and having them reserve a spot, giving us a commitment was mentioned.
Adjournment:
Meeting was adjourned at 14:07 after a motion by John Diederich and a second by Paul
Richardson.

Committee boat repairs and maintenance will be coordinated with
members and completed.
There was a discussion about moving our mast crane to another location
and not waiting for the marina to do it as well as improving the winch
ratio.
Brad wants to work with Custom Ink on KBSC logo shirts with our club
motto (Live Slow Sail Fast) and possibly the burgee.
There are old files in a cabinet that need to be consolidated and/or
purged. The dock rescue ladders are here and we will work on their
installation.
