Jyoti is the perfect example of how the eldest of three

daughters, works harder than three sons put to-

gether and to be the man of the house for her family.

She faces all obstacles without flinching to give her ma-

ternal family everything they need and a lot of what they

desire, without ever learning to give up.

But one day she painfully discovers that beneath the

veneer of helpless concern for her, she was actually, no

more than a golden goose for most of her family. Her own

sister back stabbed her and stole away her lover. Her

husband threw her out of the house in her delicate state

of pregnancy, on hearing a fact of her life, which held no

truth. Even after all this, Jyoti soldiers on.

he may have a big ban-

ner film released and a

svelte look to brag about,

but Rani Mukherjee is still up-

set. The actress feels that,

apart from a string of flops,

constant speculation about her

personal life has been detri-

mental to her career. "Since the

last three years, after every six

months there's some news of

me getting engaged or married.

It's an insult to my parents and

me. I am being portrayed as an

actress who wants to hide her

marriage," she complains. She

further asserts, "People don't

realize the harm this does to

my career. No producer or di-

rector wants to sign an actress

who is rumoured to be getting

engaged or married. They feel,

'Agar isse liya aur iski shaadi

ho gayi to film latak jayegi'. I have

to pay the price of being a pri-

vate person. I'm not like other

actors, who even talk about the

Ash in tears

The Bachchan Bahu is upset

these days and the reason

being her two ex flames,

Salman Khan and Vivek Oberoi.

Both being very unruly to her re-

surfacing their past relationship in

public and in a way disrespecting

her. Ash has dumped her past and

happily moved on in life. But both

Salman and Vivek started digging

the past when she was happily

married to Abhishek Bachchan and

leading a blissful life. She was so

depressed with the comments

made by Vivek on Farah Khan's

chat show and Salman Khan in an

interview that she broke into tears

on the sets of Sanjay Leela

Bhansali's 'Guzaarish'.

Reportedly she just kept on say-

ing, "I'm living my life the way I want.

I wish others would do the same.

Just let me be." Vivek on Farah

Khan's show spoke at length as

how Ash had spoiled his life and

ruined his career. He added that he

called the press conference about

Salman Khan threatening him for the

sake of Ash but instead of feeling

grateful, she called his act as im-

mature. He blamed Ash for the fall

of his career.

Salman Khan also in an inter-

view commented whether he has

ever physically abused Ash at the

time when he was dating her.

Ash maintained silence on the

comments made by the two but her

tears spoke about her pain.

Leading lady of Bollywood, Katrina Kaif

has admitted she faked her identity

and she isn't sorry about it. Find out

why Kat did it.

Recently the Bollywood and smitten fans

as well as media were left shell shocked

when Ayesha Shroff, Jackie Shroff's wife,

spilled the beans about Katrina's identity

insisting she wasn't Kaif.

Everyone was waiting for Rajiv Gandhi

award winning actress Katrina to come out

clean on this controversy and she finally

admitted that her passport name is 'Katrina

Turquotte'.

Kat said "As for people wondering, yes,

my passport name is Katrina Turquotte. I

changed it because it'll be easier for people

to address me. Nothing more."

Kaif's kitty. The actress who is currently

ruling the roost in Bollywood has been

signed as the brand ambassador of interna-

tional cosmetic giant Oil of Olay that launched

the newly formulated White Radiance range

in India.

A source close to Kats adds, "Katrina is a

youth icon of today. The international brand

found Kats to be the apt model to market

their product."

This year, Katrina has been the top choice

for endorsing brands. Only recently she was

chosen by leading jewelry brand Nakshatra

as their brand ambassador and now she has

bagged yet another plum endorsement deal

with Oil of Olay. The future certainly looks

bright for this gorgeous actress.

Just on the heels of the

news that Oscar Awards

winning director Danny

Boyle is trying to cast Bollywood

superstars Aamir Khan and

Shahrukh Khan in his next film

Bombay Velvet, another news

broke out that all is not well be-

tween the actors.

After Salman Khan, who said

that Shahrukh's recent detention

at the Newark Airport in US was

not a big deal, it is Aamir who has

decided to take a dig at Shahrukh.

On his return from France, he

was asked if he was frisked for

being a Khan. He said that secu-

rity checks are a routine matter.

Aamir is in 3 Idiots mood. He

said in jocular vein that they didn't

check him as he is an 'idiot'. He

went on to say that Shahrukh

faced problems, as he is too in-

telligent.

Well, Aamir may have chosen

to play safe with his choice of

words but his comments indi-

rectly mean to say that

Shahrukh's airport episode was

nothing but a publicity stunt.

Aamir said in jocu-lar vein that theydidn't check him ashe is an 'idiot'. Hewent on to say thatShahrukh facedproblems, as he istoo intelligent

Dozen Priyankas

Eighty years ago legendary

British actor Lupino Lane cre-

ated a (yet unbroken) record

for a male actor playing 24 roles in

"Only Me" (1929). And now

Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra is

all excited about the possibility of

her entering the record books for

doing 12 roles in her "What's Your

Raashee".

With "What's Your Raashee,"

Priyanka may well boast of doing

the biggest ever film written for a

woman protagonist in the history of

Indian cinema.

However, Priyanka reacted with,

"Please don't make it all sound so

big and heavy. Let's just look at it as

an entertaining movie and leave it

there. Words like 'greatest' and 'big-

gest' don't hold much relevance if

one doesn't justify each of the char-

acters. You may win when it comes

to count but then you must also be

able to put some weight in your per-

formance," she said.

Priyanka, who has given three

consecutive hits - "Dostana", "Fash-

ion" and "Kaminey," says 'What's

Your Raashee' has such a fantas-

tic script written with each of the

12 roles boasting of such well-

etched characterization.

Just when it was becoming tiring to hear every actor say

what great friends they were with their co-stars, Bollywood

actor Riteish Deshmukh has come up with something en-

tirely new - he says he is very "fond" of his co-star Lara Dutta.

"My camaraderie with Lara is excellent and I am extremely

fond of her. I have worked with her before; so I share a certain

rapport with her," Riteish said in an interview. "Do Knot Disturb"

is his third film with the former beauty queen after "Bardaasht"

and "Masti". "As colleagues it is important to have on-screen

chemistry and when you are doing comedy it is important to

have the right timing and everything. Both of us understand

thatî.

She's been linked to a string of men in

the past including Randeep Hooda

and Mudassar Aziz, but 33-year-old

actress Sushmita Sen says she has no

plans to settle down until a man can "af-

ford" her.

"If a man can afford me, I'll definitely do

that," Sushmita told.

The former beauty queen, who will be

seen on screen after a long time in Big Pic-

tures' and Vashu Bhagnani's co-production

"Do Knot Disturb", is otherwise content with

her life.

"My life has been very good and excit-

ing. I am making sure that I do only commer-

cial films as I don't want to waste time doing

anything else other than what is saleable

and what can give my audiences something

to see after such a long wait of not seeing

me as an actor, "she said.

Also starring funny man Govinda, Riteish

Deshmukh and Lara Dutta, "Do Knot Dis-

turb" is doing well.

uzz doing the B-Town rounds is

that Dia Mirza has a new man in

her life. The actress has been

seen in the company of a guy named

Ruhail, who is in the construction busi-

ness. The two have been stepping out

together and have been spotted at movie

screenings and restaurants.

Dia is busy wrapping up Suparn

Verma's Acid Factory and shot for a song

sequence recently.

Says a source, "It appears that she

has found love again. Considering she

has had her share of heartbreaks after

her split with Bunty Sachdeva, she

wants everything to go just right this time

around. She been extremely guarded

about the guy and is treading with ut-

most caution this time."

“Who is Ruhail? I haveno idea that a man bythis name or professioneven exists”

Abhay feted in Venice

Riding high on the success of his

hit Dev D in India, Bollywood

actor Abhay Deol bagged rave

reviews for his performance in the film

at the recently concluded Venice Film

Festival.

"Abhay's performance in Dev D

created waves at the festival. It is for

the first time that an Indian actor has

been selected among talents from all

over the world. For Abhay it was an

honour," said a source. The actor

wore a number by Italian designer

Salvatore Ferragamo at the screening

of the film and became the centre of

attraction for his role.

"He looked dashing as ever. What

added to his charm and glow was his

eye catching performance in the film.

Dev D received a 10-minute standing

ovation at the film festival. It was a

sight to watch," said the source.

Vidya Balan's sister Priyamani

is making her Bollywood

debut with Mani Ratnam's

Raavan. The South actress plays

the important character of

Raavan's (Abhishek Bachchan)

sister Shoorpnakha.

A source from the unit re-

veals, "Mani's production team

initially approached the South top

actress Nayantara for the role

of Shoorpankha but she refused.

Also many top Bollywood ac-

tresses were approached for the

role of Shoorpankha but they refused

because they didn't want to play

Abhishek Bachchan's sister. Abhishek is

a dishy actor and not many actresses want

to ruin their chances of being paired romanti-

cally opposite him by playing his sister in

Raavan." Priyamani will play Shoorpankha in

the Tamil and Hindi versions, just l ike

Aishwarya is playing Sita in both versions.

Priyamani won the National Film Award for

her role in the Tamil film Paruthi Veeran (2006).

She also won a Filmfare South Award for her

role in the Malayalam film Thirakkatha (2008).

Acclaimed filmmaker Shyam Benegal describes Minnisha Lamba as

an "exceptionally good" actress but rues that she hasn't got her

"due" in Bollywood. He feels his movie "Well Done Abba" will fetch

her much-deserved appreciation.

"Minnisha will be seen in a role very different from what she has done

till now. I hope with 'Well Done Abba' she gets the appreciation she

deserves. She is an exceptionally fine actress and I feel that she has not

got her due in the industry," Benegal said.

After starting her film career with critically acclaimed film "Yahaan",

Minnisha moved on to mainstream cinema and featured in films like "An-

thony Kaun Hai?", "Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd", "Kidnap" and "Bachna

Ae Haseeno".

"Well Done Abba", a political satire, is a light hearted film that narrates

the story of Armaan Ali, a driver working in Mumbai. He takes leave for a

month to find a husband for his teenage daughter, who lives in a small

neighbourhood close to Hyderabad and returns to work only after three

months. His young employer wants to sack him but is persuaded to listen

They are both showing off

their well-toned body in

their movie 'Dil Bole

ing a bare-chest within an open

her sizzling image makeover in the

Shahid was really gaga over

Rani's change and very much

awed at her slim figure. And the

charming actress seemed to have

said that now he is willing to take

hilpa Shetty is exasper-

ated. "It's not happening

in October, November,

December or any of the dates

that have been fixed for my

wedding in the media. Raj

Kundra and I will announce the

date from rooftops and invite

the entire press corps to be

part of the baraat when it hap-

pens. In the meanwhile, please

leave us alone." As for the

wedding, "There's no reason

on earth why Raj I wouldn't

want to get married at the ear-

liest. At the moment we've our

hands full with many new ex-

citing ventures. We need to get

the space in our lives to plan

and enjoy this wonderful

event. Haath peele karne ke liye

haath khali to hone chahiye."

All the talk of an interna-

tional career is just talk

for Kareena. She has no

intentions of going international.

Not even for Gurinder Chadha.

Apparently, Aishwarya Rai

who did Gurinder's Bride &

Prejudice and her husband Paul

Berges's The Mistress of

Spices, won't work with

her...not after Chadha appar-

ently went around blaming Ash

for the failure of her husband's

film.

Gurinder has also shown

keen interest in working with

Rani Mukherjee. And of course

Kareena who is not impressed.

For the second time she has

said no to the Bend It Like

Beckham director.

Says a source, "Three years

ago Gurinder wanted Kareena

for Bride & Prejudice. Kareena

naturally presumed it was the

lead. She was shocked to

know the director actually

wanted her for Aishwarya's

youngest sister's part which

finally went to Piya Rai

Chowdhary. Kareena was

shocked. She had turned down

the author-backed central role

in Deepa Mehta's Water. And

here she was being offered the

fourth lead. She vowed never

to work with her again."

Kareena admits this is the

second time she has turned

down Gurinder Chadha. "Who

offers a role is not important.

What is being offered is impor-

tant. I'm really not that enthused

by the idea of going international

unless it's something really big.

I don't even know if Gurinder's

offer was with Johnny Depp. I

was just not interested."

Interestingly, all the three

top-notch NRI filmmakers have

had problems getting an Indian

cast. Deepa Mehta's Water

went through several casting

changes. Mira Nair originally

wanted Abhishek Bachchan

and Rani Mukherjee for The

Namesake. .

Blue, an underwater action thriller directed by Anthony D'Souza,

captures the fast paced action, above and below the ocean.

Set in the Bahamas and Bangkok, the film revolves around the

complex relationships shared amongst the lead characters and their

search for a lost treasure.

Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) and Sam (Zayed Khan) are brothers, who find

a friend in Aarav (Akshay Kumar) - a manipulative and scheming busi-

ness-tycoon. Mona (Lara Dutta) is Sagar's love-interest in the film and

Nikki (Katrina Kaif) is a free-spirited individual with an ulterior motive.

As emotions run high and motives run deep, the dark side of human

nature lays bare. The characters grapple; initially with sharks, and

then with their own pricking conscience as greed and betrayals take

over and threaten to destroy their very existence.

With adrenaline pumping action sequences and death-defying stunts,

Blue has a stunning visual quality. The film boasts of the best techni-

cians from across the world.

Haunting music is composed by Oscar winner A R Rahman with inter-

national pop-sensation Kylie Minogue performing a special number.

Luscious LipsWhatever lipstick you use, there is one golden rule to follow... just make sure that it is

right for your skin tone, hair and eye coloring. Go vamp for the night time with

darker shades, and keep it calm and cute with tinted lip-gloss during the day.

Top tip - if you want great looking shimmer lips try applying sparkling eye shadow

over the top of your lipstick to create a new shiny shade, absolutely free!

Perfect Makeup in MinutesNo matter what time of day it is, or how busy you are, there arecertain golden rules when applying your makeup. Here is a shortguide to getting your war paint right every time!

Laying theFoundations

Dark Circles? No way! There is a huge range of products on the market for

different tones and textures of concealed. Don't be tempted

to go two shades lighter than your natural color, as it will make

the darkness of your skin more gray and muddy. And be careful

not to lay it on too thick. Apart from the fact that it looks like you're

wearing too much makeup, it may also damage the delicate skin

beneath your eyes. Remember, you want to tint the discolora-

tion, not mask it.

Top tip - Have a good look at the actual color of your dark

circles. If your darkness is gray, lightly apply a soft pink eye

shadow to the circles before applying your foundation. If your

darkness is more of a blue hue, use a light peach color first

instead.

Powdering UpKeep your powder application light by using loose powder

and a big brush for application. Less is definitely more here.

Make sure that you buy a good powder that will sink into your

skin, rather than visibly lie of the top of it.

Top tip - before applying your powder, try blotting your foun-

dation with a tissue. This will remove any excess oils, and help

to stop you from getting shiny?

Blushing BeautyOnly apply your blush to the apples

of your cheeks, and build up the

color layers slowly. Next, blend the

blush in so that the color looks natural.

Remember, you're just trying to en-

hance the facial definition that you al-

ready have. No matter how much we

may want to, it is impossible to draw

on fantastic cheekbones. Just be your-

self!

Top tip - if you make a mistake and

put too much blusher on, don't panic!

You don't need to start over. Instead,

just moisten a sponge and gently dab

your cheeks with it. This will dilute the

color and return your overall look to

something acceptable!

Foundation should be the perfect

match to your skin tone. Nobody looks

good when they have skin the color of a

pumpkin! And worse yet, beware of the

tidemarks at the jaw line. Always make

sure that your foundation is well blended

if you want to avoid looking like you're

wearing a mask.

Top tip - if you use a shimmering mois-

turizer before you apply your foundation

then your skin will absolutely glow!

Like umpteen Yash

Raj Films, Dil Bole

Hadippa, directed by

Anurag Singh, is set, in a

mythical Punjab where

fields are always sway-

ing in the wind, colourfully

dressed men and women

are always waiting to

break out into a vigorous

dance, and everyone

cheerfully chomps on sug-

arcane and drinks lassi.

Only this pind (village)

happens to be at the

Wagah border and has its

own cricket team. Every

year, the team plays a lo-

cal Pakistani team for the

Aman cup and loses.

In despair, the team's

owner, played by Anupam

Kher, turns to his son

Rohan (Shahid Kapur)

who plays county cricket

in England. Among the as-

pirants is Veera Kaur, a

feisty, cricket-mad-girl,

played by Rani Mukherjee.

Veera lives with a nautanki

company called the Jigri

Yaar Dance Company and

is adept at costumes and

disguises.

She becomes Veer, the

most delicate Sardar

you've ever seen, and

joins the team. What fol-

standing and of course a

climactic triumph of the will.

Dil Bole Hadippa is loosely inspired

by the 2006 high school rom-com

She's The Man, in which a girl dis-

guises herself as her brother to get

on a soccer team. Of course the story

has been thoroughly Punjabified.

The Chopras have long been mas-

ters at creating overblown fantasies,

which work because they are rooted

in an emotional reality. But in the last

decade, their strengths as storytell-

ers have calcified into formula.

But what saves Dil BoleÖ from be-

ing a total write off is Rani Mukherjee.

The actress, looking better than she

has in years, pours her soul into Veera

Kaur. Her performance, like the film, is

high-pitched and broad-stroked but

she makes it work. She and Shahid

Kapur have a nice chemistry.

There is something eminently like-

able about both of them. So in the cli-

max, when Veera makes a speech

about allowing girls to dream, you are

actually moved.

The Choprashave long been

masters at creatingoverblown fantasies, which

work because they arerooted in an

emotional reality

Salman is back with a vengeance with Wanted.

This is his deadliest performance to date. He

may not be the best actor in town, but in a film

like Wanted, in a role that seems like an extension of

his personality, you can't think of anyone else enact-

ing this role with flourish.

A remake of Pokiri [made in Telugu and Tamil ver-

sions], Wanted is a full on masala film. Recall the suc-

cessful potboilers of yore and you relive those mo-

ments as reel after reel of Wanted unfolds.

The daring hero and his herogiri, the naÔve girl-

friend, the corrupt cop, the dreaded don, the don's

moll, the fist-clinching henchmen... Wanted is for those

who seek unabashed entertainment and relish masala

films.

Radhe [Salman Khan] is a hardcore gangster. A

sharpshooter with a sharp brain, he works for Gani

Bhai [Prakash Raj], the dreaded Mafioso, but on his

own terms. Totally fearless, Radhe single-handedly

eliminates Gani Bhai's enemies one by one; making

more enemies in the process.

He's astounded when the young and pretty Jahnvi

[Ayesha Takia Azmi] professes her liking for him. In-

spector Talpade's [Mahesh Manjrekar] lustful eyes fall

on Jahnvi. He doesn't know that Jahnvi has devel-

oped a soft corner for Radhe. Ayesha Takia is very

good and the pairing with Salman looks wonderful

But Wanted is not without its share of flaws. The

film stands on a thin storyline and the viewer can

guess what's in store next, which means that there's

not much novelty in the plot. Besides, Wanted could've

done without a song or two, thereby keeping its length

in check.

Radhe [Salman Khan] is a hardcoregangster. A sharpshooter with asharp brain, he works for Gani Bhai[Prakash Raj], the dreaded Mafioso, but on his own terms

Wake Up Sid deals with a younger

boy-older woman relationship.Do such relationships find acceptance in oursociety?

Of course! There's space for every kind of relationship in the soci-

ety. But in the movie, I'm playing Ayesha, who's just a few years older

than Sid. It's not as if they have difference of a decade between them.

They get along fine. It's a coming-of age film and it will be accepted. If

the society wasn't ready for such relationships, where do you think it

would have left 50 per cent of the relationships in Bollywood?

Sid is a person extremely lax about everything in life. Didyou go through that phase too?

Yes and everyone does.

Sometimes I'm so lazy that I don't want to lift a finger. I start thinking

of a job where I can rest more and work less. I'm still not as ambitious

as a lot of my contemporaries are (smiles).

How was your college life?

I was involved in everything from morchas to late evening parties.

I completed college from Delhi. That was the first time I was staying

away from home. Thankfully, it wasn't a hostel. It was a rented flat

where we had the best time of our lives.

I'm sure there were college romances too?

Yes. Just because I do serious roles, doesn't mean I didn't have a

fun college life.

Do your parents know about these things?

Of course they do. There's nothing I hide from my mom and dad. My

parents have always been very liberal and supportive.

Are they supportive of your relationship with RanveerShorey?

That's my personal life and I don't discuss that in public.

Okay. But like Sid, do you have younger men chasing you?

I think the younger men are intimidated by me because I look serious

and I've done a chain of serious roles. So, obviously they'd be scared

to get anywhere close, let alone doing any mischief or trying to woo

me. They find me rather scary.

The Festival of Lights helps us to know

the truth of victory of good over evil.

For Hindus it means to understand the

meanings behind each of the five days of

Diwali. It specifically commemorates the re-

turn of Lord Rama to his kingdom Ayodhya,

at the end of his exile which lasted for 14

years.

The first day is called Dhanvantari

Triodasi, also sometimes called Dhan Theras,

while the second day is called Narak

Chaturdasi. According to Hindu legend, on

this day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon,

Narakasur, and made the world free from

fear. The third day is the actual Diwali, when

Hindus worship the Mother Lakshmi, and on

the fourth day they perform Goverdhan

Pooja. The fifth and final day of Diwali is

called Bhai Dooj, and is dedicated to sisters

and is the first day of the Hindu New Year.

In the special Festival of Lights, diyas are

lit to help the goddess (Mother) Lakshmi find

her way into people's homes, especially as

the period is also during the fortnight (two

weeks) of the dark month of Kartik. God-

dess Lakshmi is the symbol of wealth and

prosperity and is also the consort of the Hindu

god, Vishnu. As Hindus are also celebrating

their New Year, Lord Ganesha, the elephant

headed god, is worshipped in most Hindu

homes on this day.

Home is where good food is:

I believe in one thing. It is food that can keep us fit and healthy. It is food that can make us unfit and

unhealthy. So why not stick to the first type of food so that we can actually experience longevity? And

this first type of food is clearly defined by me as home cooked. It could be hot rotis straight from the

flame with a light drizzle of fragrant ghee, the long grains of dazzling white basmati grains that somehow

make rajma or kadhi as precious as caviar or those spongy wadas that soak up the sambhar. Well, be it

a pulao, or a khichdi, maybe a stew or dal rice, it could be some dry vegetable with roti, but traditional

home recipes do wonders for the spirit. These recipes keep the heart ticking ensconced in warmth of

tradition and cultural riches. Food eaten together keeps the family together and even if there are major

time constraints I am sure something can be done to get hot food onto the table once a day ìthe more

Indian it is the betterî the more traditional Indian it is the best!
