The PG and Research Department of Biotechnology has inaugurated the student’s
scientific association BIOGEN for the academic year 2018-19 on 13th July, 2018 at the
college premises. Dr. V. Bhuvaneshwati, Assistant Professor and Head in Biotechnology
welcomed the gathering, Principal Dr. V. Balasubramanian, presided over the function, Chief
Executive Officer Dr. V. Chinnusamy, felicitated the gathering and Dr. S. Paulsamy, Dean
Academics cum R & D, KASC glorified the programme. Dr. R.T.
NARENDHIRAKANNAN, Assistant Professor (SG), Department of Biotechnology,
Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, Coimbatore, inaugurated and given a special
lecture entitled, “Role of Nanotechnology in Biotechnology”. Ms. Bhuvaneshwari, Ph.D
scholar, as student’s secretary, Ms. Tharanganipriya, II M.Sc., Biotechnology and Mr.
Vishnu, III B.Sc. Biotechnology as student’s Joint Secretary were selected as New Office
Bearers for theBIOGEN association this year. Vote of thanks was proposed by the student’s

125th Anniversary Celebration
on 23.07.2018
The PG and Research Department of Biotechnology, Kongunadu Arts and Science
College, Coimbatore organized one day competitionson 23.07.2018in remembrance ofSwami
Vivekananda’s Chicago Lectures-125th Anniversary Celebration.Aim of the programmeis to
encourage and motivate students to share information on Vivekananda’sChicago’s lecture
and his message for the youth in religious and social aspects.Dr. V. Bhuvaneshwari, HoD of
Biotechnology welcome the gathering. The programme was graced by Dr. V. Chinnusamy,
Chief Executive Officer (SF Courses), Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore.
Nearly 120 participants from various classes of our department have participated in
various events including drawing, oratorical and essay writing.Dr. R. Ranjithkumar and
Mr.M. Gogul Ramnath, Assistant Professors in Biotechnology organizing this programme.

India-UK Workshop on
Knowledge transfer on the sustainability of innovative wastewater treatment
technologies to India-II on 04.08.2018
In continuation with the earlier workshop, Kongunadu Arts and Science College,
Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India in collaboration with University of Exeter, United Kingdom
jointly organized ‘India-UK Workshop on Knowledge transfer on the sustainability of
innovative wastewater treatment technologies to India-II’ at the Arulpuram Common Effluent
Treatment Company Pvt. Ltd on 04.08.2018. Dr. K. Muthukumar, Assistant Professor in
Tamil, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore welcomed the gathering and gave
the introduction about the programme The theme of the programme was given by the
Organizer Dr. Senthilarasu Sundaram, UoE, UK. Dr. David Benson, UoE, UK explained
about the Wastewater Management policies & its Social Impacts. Mr. S. Nagarajan,
President, Dyers Association of Tirupur, presented the Present Scenario of Wastewater
Treatment by Dyeing Industries in Tirupur. “Graphene based nanomembrane as an alternative
strategy for Dye waste water treatment” was suggested by Dr. V. Bhuvaneshwari, Head,
Department of Biotechnology, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore. Followed
by round table discussions about 20 participants participated in this workshop, got benefited
by collaborating industry, academics and social activist for the better and cheaper treatment
of industrial effluents. The discussion was carried out by Mr. PerurJeyaraman, Coimbatore,
Mr. SubrabharathiManian, Tiruppur, Mr. Sai Prasad, Kovai Kulangalpathugappu, Mr.
BalaSanthanam, Joint Secretary, Dyers Association of Tirupur.
On 04-08-2018, this team also visited Chinnakkarai common effluent treatment plant,
Tiruppur and discussed the possibilities of reduction in cost and the way to reduce the mixed
salt waste obtained from the treated effluent. Theseare the Zero Liquid discharge plant and
the possibilities of future Zero Solid discharge plant were discussed. Tiruppur has become the
model treatment plant in the whole world to follow and is like heaven when compared to
other parts of world in treating Dye effluent. Futuristic collaborative projects and the need
for others to visit these plants and follow in rest of the parts of worldare discussed. Vote of

Association (ISCA) Coimbatore chapter,Sponsored “One day workshop on molecular biology
techniques” at the college premises on 6.08.2018. Dr. K. Surekha, Assistant Professor in
Biochemistry, Organizing Secretary of this workshop welcomed the gathering, Organizing
Secretary of this workshop, Dr. R. Amsaveni, Assistant Professor in Biotechnology
highlighted the theme of the workshop. Principal of the college Dr. V. Balasubramaniam
presided over the function. Dr. V. Chinnusamy, Chief Executive Officer and Dr. S. Paulsamy,
Dean R & D, KASCfelicitated the gathering.
The main objectives of this workshop is to make the young and aspiring candidates to
involve in utilizing molecular biology tools in their academics as well as in research. The
extraction of DNA from microorganisms, especially bacteria, has become an essential
method in nearly all modern microbiology research.In more recent years, plasmid DNA has
begun to be investigated as a therapeutic platform for treating infections, genetic and acquired
diseases, and as a promising tool for the development of DNA vaccines. Lecture cum hands
on training on Molecular Biology Techniques was given by Dr. V. Bhuvaneshwari, Dr. R.
Amsaveni and Mr. M. Gogul Ramnath Assistant Professors in Biotechnology, Kongunadu
Arts and Science College, Coimbatore. Vote of thanks was proposed by the Organizing
Secretary of this workshop, Mr. M. Gogul Ramnath Assistant Professor in Biotechnology,
Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore. About 70 participants including Students
and Research Scholars have benefited out of this workshop. This workshop was organized by

Department of Biotechnology, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu,
India organized One day International Seminar on Advances in Genomics and Proteomics
“(AGP –2018)” on 07.08.2017 at the college premises. The welcome address was given by
Dr. V. Bhuvaneshwari, Assistant Professor and Head, PG and Research Department of
Biotechnology, KASC, the presidential address was given by Dr. C.A. Vasuki, Secretary and
Director, KASC. Dr. V. Balasubramaniam, Principal, KASC and Dr. V. Chinnusamy, Chief
Executive officer, KASC felicitated the gathering. The theme of the programme was given by
the Organizer Dr. P. Senthil kumar, Assistant Professor in Biotechnology, KASC. Dr. Dinesh
K. P. Bheeman, Associate Professor, Applied Science, Higher College of Technology,
Muscut, Sultanate of Oman, acted as chairperson for the oral sessions. Dr. Vignesh Ramesh,
Post Doctoral Scientist, University of California, Irvine, CA, USA, took on the first session
on the topic “Integrative Functional Genomics analysis reveals distinct molecular mechanistic
features of Hepatocellular carcinoma’’. The importance of “Genes, Proteins and Diseases”
was highlighted by Dr. R. Sivasamy, Assistant Professor, Department of Human Genetics
and Molecular biology, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. The final session was taken over
by Dr .R. Kannan, Associate Professor, Department of Botany, N.G.M. College, Pollachi,
Coimbatore, on the topic “Proteomics and Herbal Drug Discovery”. Dr. V. Bhuvaneshwari,
Assistant Professor and Head, PG and Research Department of Biotechnology, KASC, acted
as chairperson for the poster session. Dr. R. Amsaveni, Assistant Professor in Biotechnology
acted as Rapporteur for the poster session. The Seminar concluded with the Poster
Presentation competition by the participating students on various topics related to Genomics
and Proteomics. The best of the posters were selected by the Jury and were given prizes. Vote
of thanks proposed by the organizer Dr. G. Anbarasi, Assistant Professor in Biotechnology,
KASC. About 500 international and national participants got benefited out of this
International Seminar. Dr. P. Senthil kumar and Dr. G. Anbarasi, Assistant Professors,

Coimbatore organized a workshop on “GENE EXPRESSION ANALYSIS USING REAL
TIME PCR” at the college premises on 04.09.2018. Organizing Secretary, Dr. V.
Bhuvaneshwari, Assistant Professor and Head, PG and Research Department of
Biotechnology, KASC welcomed the gathering. The lecture cum demo on “Gene expression
analysis using Real time PCR” was given by Dr. V. Bhuvaneshwari, Assistant Professor and

gave a lecture on “Spawn production”. A lecture on“Medicinal value of mushrooms” by Dr.
M. Kalaiselvi, Assistant Professor in Biochemistry. The participants were demonstrated with
the various cultivation technology of different mushrooms and stages of spawn production by
Dr. S. Kathiravan, Assistant Professor (Biochemistry), KASC and Mr. M. Karthik, Ph.D.,
Research Scholar (Biochemistry), KASC, Dr. V. Bhuvaneshwari, Assistant Professor & Head
(Biotechnology). The participants had hands-on training on the above technologies. About
150 participants including Students, Research Scholars and Faculty Members from various
institutions and host institution have been benefited by this workshop. Dr. S. Krishnakumari-

The PG and Research Department of Biotechnology, Kongunadu Arts and Science College,
Coimbatore and BECon Fest, IIT Delhi jointly organized National Level Competition for
Agriculture Science Students at the college premises from 29.09.2018 to 30.09.2018.Dr. V.
Bhuvaneshwari Assistant Professor & Head, Department of Biotechnology,Convenor of this
event KASC welcomed the gathering. Dr. R. Amsaveni, Assistant Professor in
Biotechnology, Coordinator of this event highlighted the theme of this competition.
The lecture on “Computational drug discovery and Development” was given by Dr. C. N.
Prashantha, Founder CEO and Managing Director, Scientific Bio-minds, Bangalore,
Karnataka. Further hands on training and the competition on Bioinformatics were conducted
by Dr. C. N. Prashantha.About 31 students from Kongunadu Arts and Science College,
Coimbatore and other colleges participated in this event. The top five students from
Kongunadu Arts and Science College Biotechnology department won the prize at the end of
this training cum competition. The selected students will be sent to IIT campus Delhi for
second round of selection. The selected students after second round will have an opportunity
to have free training and execution of their innovate ideas as research projects in IIT, Delhi.

Studies, Sathyabama institute of Science and Technology, Chennai.Hands on training
regarding the identification of unknown bacteria and its evolutionary relationship using
bioinformatics tools was handled by Dr. Amit Kumar.

from Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore and various other institutions have

The aim of this workshop is to make the young and aspiring participants to acquire
knowledge on Biostatistical analysis. Lecture session was given by Dr. P. Mariappan,
Assistant Professor and Head, PG and Research Department of Zoology, Rajah Serfoji
Government College (Autonomous), Thanjavur. He highlighted the Data analysis,
Random Sampling, Skewed Distribution, p-value, t-Test, one way ANOVA which is
determined efficiently and accurately. He also enlightened the session on the usage of the
SPSS software on the data editor, t-test, one-way and two-way ANOVA. The session was
followed by hands on training workshop on Biostatistical analysis through SPSS software
package.
About 66 participants including Students, Research Scholars and Faculty Members

lecture on “Agrobacterium mediated Gene Transfer”. The participants were demonstrated
with the agrobacterium mediated gene transfer in various stages by resource person’s Ms.P.
Karthika and Mr. Amal T Cheeran. All participants had hands-on training on the above
technologies. About 30 participants including Students, Research Scholars and Faculty
Members from host institution have been benefited by this workshop. Dr. S. Rathish Kumar

“BIOMARKERS FOR CANCER DIAGNOSTICS” at the college premises on
28.01.2019. This programme was sponsored by Dr. Aruchami Research Foundation. Dr. S.
Paulsamy, Dean R&D welcomed the gathering. The aim of this programme is to make the
young and aspiring participants aware about the novel tools avaible as biomarkers for cancer
diagnosis. The Chief Guest Dr. P. Manickam, Senior Principal Scientist, Thermofischer
Scientific inc. Maryland, USA explained about the cheap and simple innovations done to test
cervical cancer in the Govt. hospitals, Govt.Primary health centre. This talk pave way for
academia-industry collaborations and future innovations in the field of health sector. There
was interactive sessions with various Departments such as Biotechnology, Biochemistry,
Botany and Zoology.
About 200 participants including Students, Research Scholars and Faculty Members
from our college in various disciplines have benefited out of this programme. Vote of Thanks

The aim of this FDP is to make the young and aspiring participants to acquire
knowledge on Intellectual property rights in biological sciences. Lecture session was given
by Dr. Parimelagan, Professor, Department of Botanty, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore
on the topic “Intellectual Property Rights in relation to Biological Science”. About 11
participants including Research Scholars and Faculty Members have been benefited by the
Seminar.
The highlights of the FDP were on innovative and creative India and the property
rights on the project which can be made into a commercial product. The chief guest also
discussed on the Patenting of the product and also on the IPR policy objectives which
included the creating awareness, protective IP and legal aspects of the project. He also
discussed on the monopoly rights given to inventors for patenting their products.
He enlightened the talk on the role of human capital in economy, skill based
development and global human capital index and India’s position on training, nurturing skills
and its beneficiaries for the school, college students and government officials. He said about
the patenting charge and how far it can be useful for the Industry and society. After patenting
it have to be scrutinized and examined for further commercialization and usefulness for the
society.
The different types of the IPR like patent, copyright, trademark and design were
explained. The consequence of the ignorance and Biopiracy was also discussed. He also
discussed on the online courses and the different job offers on it. Vote of thanks was

The PG and Research Department ofBiotechnology organized one day orientation
programme for college students. About 45 II B. Sc. Computer Science students from Vellalar
College for Women (Autonomous), Thindal, Erode, along with the 2 faculty members
actively participated in this orientation programme sponsored by DBT star college, New
Delhi. The students were given orientation by the faculty members of PG and Research
Department ofBiotechnology, Kongunadu Arts and Science College about the laboratory
instruments, handling, applications and working of the instruments used for Biotechnology
research. They were also taken for laboratory visits to various labs in Biotechnology
department which includes Microbiology, Plant tissue culture, Animal tissue culture and
Molecular Biology. The students have shown were very much to know about the various
applications of Biotechnology field in medicine. All the students were actively involved in
discussion with the faculty members of Biotechnology department throughout the orientation

Nadu is called as Siddha system of Medicine. The system deals the diseases in various
methods namely using drugs derived from plants, animals and birds, metals and nonmetals
and physical methods including varma and external application of oils. Researchers are now
concentrating on the effect of siddha formulations in curing various ailments.This programme
nourishes and nurture the students, researchers and academicians to expose the Nano
Physiology and Nano Biochemistry angle of the ancient system of medicine. About 200
participants including Students, Research Scholars and Faculty Members from the host

Organizing Secretary of this workshop, Dr. R. Amsaveni, Assistant Professor in
Biotechnology highlighted the theme of the Programme.
The main objectives of this training programme is to make the young and aspiring
candidates to involve in Hands-on training on Bonsai techniques and to develop
entrepreneurial skills to set up Bonsai units as a self employment activity. Lecture on Bonsai
an art and its opportunities was enlightened by Dr. H. Abdul Kaffoor, Assistant Professor and
Nature Conservationist, Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College,

Technologies to India-III: Circular Economy, Graphene related technologies
on 13th March 2019

Arts and Science College, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India in collaboration with University of
Exeter, United Kingdom jointly organized Knowledge Transfer on the Sustainability of
Innovative Water Quality Monitoring Technologies to India-III: Circular Economy, Graphene
related technologies at the college premises on 13.03.2018. The welcome address and the
theme, overview of the Project and Workshop Aims of the programme was given by the
organizing secretary Dr. V. Bhuvaneshwari, Asst Professor and Head in Biotechnology. The
Circular economy in textile industry was proposed by the Organizer Dr. Senthilarasu
Sundaram, UoE, UK. The present scenario of Socio economic aspects of Noyyal River were
explained by Dr. K. Muthukumar, Kongunadu Arts and Science College. Alternate solution
for sustainable textile processing was discussed by Mr. Balasandhanam, Dyer’s Association
of Tiruppur.
A wastewater treatment practice in Textile Industries was discussed by Prof S. Karthikeyan,
Professor (Microbiology), Dept of bioenergy, TNAU. “Sustainable energy production using
algae and agricultural residues” was delivered by Dr. GanapathiArumugam, Managing
Director, Enhanced Biofuels & Technologies India (P) Ltd, Coimbatore. Advanced waste
water treatment technologies in India” was proposed by Mr. M. Gopalakrishnan,
Environmental Engineer, Eco Green technologies, Coimbatore. Research need to establish
low cost cationizing of the fabric so that use of salt is reduced, thus the solid waste will be
reduced, Alternative to ion exchange chromatography, Need for Strategies to renovate the
soil contamination and water contamination, Need for Strategies for cost effective treatment
plant for small dyers to treat the waste water and reuse the dye and water were discussed in
the workshop. Mr. D. Bharathi, Ph.D scholar in Biotechnology proposed the use of
nanoparticle for dye decolourization. Ms. M. Tharangini priya, II-M.Sc. Biotechnology,
KASC proposed phytovolatilization process to decontaminate the metal contaminated soil
and water. Mr. Jeslin Cherian Thomas, II-M.Sc. Biotechnology, KASC, proposed the use of
hyacinth roots and leaves to decolourize dyes for small scale dyeing industries.Vote of thanks

About 40 participants participated in this workshop, got benefited by collaborating industry,
academics for the better and cheaper treatment of industrial effluents.

Program overview
World water day and forest day celebration is an annual UN observance day. Every
year it was celebrated on March 21st and 22nd that highlights the important of fresh water and
the conservation of forest. The main motive of our program is to advocate the sustainable
management of fresh water and forest resources. In this regard, we have conducted
competition on conservation aspects of water and forest. We invited dignitaries those who
sacrifices their life for the conservation of water and forest. The details of the program are
enlisted below.

Program Schedule
“Puviyamudham” a symposium on Water and Forest Conservation has been
conducted by PG and Research Department of Biotechnology on the 21st of March 2019 at
our college premises. The programme was conducted to create awareness on water and forest
conservation and also make the students explore the recent trends in conserving the natural
resources. The programme started with the signing ceremony of the conservation of water
and forest resolution by the faculty members, non-teaching staff members and students.
The programme welcome address was delivered by Dr. V. Bhuvaneshwari, Assistant
Professor and head, Department of Biotechnology. Presidential address was given by
Dr. V. Balasubramaniam, Principal and the programme felicitated by Dr. S. Paulsamy, Dean,
R&D and academics and Dr. P. Sujatha, NAAC Coordinator.
Bird man BalPandiyan shared his experience in conserving koonthankulam lake and
birds. He gave more unknown information regarding birds through his enthusiastic speech.
The college silambattam group members gave energetic performance followed by wonderful
mime was performed by English department students regarding water conservation. To
appreciate the whole hearted daily efforts taken by all the care takers to make the college
environment clean and hygienic they were recognized with memento by the BIRDMAN of
Koonthankulam Mr. S. Balpandiyan, Dr. S. Paulsamy Dean, R&D and Dr. V.
Bhuvaneshwari, Assistant Professor and Head in Biotechnology, KASC. In continuation, S.
Saravanakarnamoorthy from Zoology Dept and V.Ranjithkumar from I-B.Sc. Biotechnology
gave a talk on Economic inequality & Environmental degradation and
Iyarkaiyaikapomineyathorulagaipadaipom respectively.
In afternoon session, “Coimbatore Last Drop” a documentary film was displayed.
P.K. Selvaraj, a secretary of Koushika River rescue association shared his experience in
rescuing Koushika River followed by Sivarajan from Chinnavedampatty lake renovation
group gave a talk on steps taken for renovating the lake. Guruprasath from I-M.Sc
Biotechnology Department delivered a wonderful speech on “Virtual Water”.
Events like science model and poster presentations were conducted. The topics were
given with science to overcome the changes caused in environment by mankind. Several
students from host institution and different colleges have energetically participated in all the
events. Dr. H. Abdul Kafoor, Assistant Professor in Botany, KASC acted as jury. About 2000
seed balls prepared by the Eco Club Students of Kongunadu Arts and Science College were
distributed. Pencil with seeds was provided by the College management.
Various competitions such as logo designing, poem writing, essay writing,
biocartooning, facial painting, mime, quiz were conducted on 15th March, 2019. In
valedictory, the winners were appreciated with Plant samplings and certificates by Dr. V.
Chinnusamy, Chief Executive Officer, KASC. All the dignitaries and judge were honored
with mementos. Mr. V. Ranjith kumar from I-B.Sc. Biotechnology has been honored for his
excellent contribution for Nature conservation. On behalf of KASC i-HUB, the innovative
ideas of model, poster presentation and project proposal was awarded with cash prize. A nice
acapella was performed by college musical club members. Vote of thanks was delivered by
Ms. M. Tharangini Priya, Student Secretary, Department of Biotechnology. About 360
members have participated in this function from various Departments of Kongunadu Arts and
Science College and other colleges. The participants delivered advance happy birthday
wishes to our beloved college Secretary and Director, Dr.C.A. Vasuki mam.
Dignitaries Peculium
S. Bal Pandiyan: Wild life conservator from Koondhankulam
Mr. S. Balpandiyan, also known as BIRDMAN of Koonthankulam. He is a self-
owned bird conservator and conservationist. He provides resident to migratory birds that visit
koonthankulam during north east monsoon. In 2009 balpandi co-authored a book “Diary on
the nesting behavior the nesting and behavior” of Indian birds along with naturalist “china
sathan”. That book contains 300 beautiful photographs. And he enlisted more than 300
different species of birds. After this publication he was offered to interact with a US based
wild life conservator Murray. He was awarded with more than 5 awards including Green
Honour award from World wild life fund. Due his innovative ideas of protecting birds, he is
simply known as walking encyclopedia of birds. Bal Pandi is as methodical and organised in
his work as any qualified Ornithologist. Due to his innovative ideas and interest in
conservation of birds he was honored by an award “Manninmainthan” award in our college
by R&D Dean Dr. S. Paulsamy and Dr. V. Bhuvaneshwari, Head, Department of
Biotechnology.
P.K. Selvaraj: Secretary of Koushika River rescue association
He is a retriever of the Koushika River which has diminished. He was born in
ordinary farmer background family at vagarampalayam village, Coimbatore. He started his
journey by constructing check dams and he found the way of the river. Then he finds and
fights against the illegal land acquisition. In continuation, he start up the awareness
programme throughout the Coimbatore people and also he conducted archeological research
regarding Koushika River. He was one of the important person who puts the base for
“AthikidavuAvinashi Scheme”.
