WHY ECOLOGICAL COMPENSATIONS?

• Globally we have completely transformed 31% of all natural ecosystems into agricultural and settled land

• We have caused a 53% reduction in global area of wetlands • We herd livestock on 30% of the ice-free terrestrial land

surface of the earth to produce meat• Global populations of fish, birds, mammals, amphibians and

reptiles declined by 58% during the last 40 years
