Happy August. I am honored and thrilled to be your new board president, having now, as you read this article, completed my first month in this leadership role. I first want to thank everyone for their support as I begin my term. I want to especially thank Rabbi Moskowitz, Cantor Hass, Eric Shatzkin, Sharon Amster Brown, all other members of the temple staff team, and the board of Temple Israel who are my sacred partners and have

already provided me with invaluable guidance. I want to thank my family and friends for the support you have given me (and will continue to give me!). Most importantly I want to thank the past presidents that I have had the pleasure of serving under during my years on the board: Steve Keiles, Jonathan Kass, Amy Lipeles and Alan Lilien. All of you have led us into the strong and growing congregation we are now. You have served as amazing role models for me. I will be a stronger president because of the leadership you modeled.

As the summer sun warms our world we often take the time for leisure activities that are distinctly summer: BBQ’s, park visits, relaxing at the beach, and perhaps get-aways to remote destinations. Many of you enjoyed “Shabbat in the Park” in July. Hopefully you will join us on August 4th as we return to El Dorado Park to celebrate Shabbat and enjoy the concert in the park together! For those of you with young ones, we will return to the park again on August 18th for “Tot Shabbat in the Park”. Then on August 25th, we will enjoy our annual “Shabbabaque” and Shabbat service at the Alpert JCC. For many of us, our summer adventures (both with our Temple and our friends and family) are often a bit slower paced and provide us with not only time for play and relaxation, but also a time for reflection.

As many of you know, seven months ago I severely broke my leg while enjoying my favorite winter activity, snow skiing. The long months of living with a temporary disability has altered my life’s perspective. I learned many lessons while having a broken leg. I had to learn patience, while I slowly healed. I gained a new empathy for others as they deal with their own challenges. I had to learn acceptance that there are many things in life that are unplanned, and you just have to get through it. And perhaps, most importantly, I learned the importance of allowing other people in your life the privilege of stepping in to lend a helping hand.

“Gemilut Chasadim” or “nurturing acts of kindness” is an opportunity for us to engage with one another and make a difference. Many people (family, friends and strangers) stepped up to help me maneuver the world that is not always friendly to those with disabilities, during my many months of recovery. These acts always brightened my day, and the offers from

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEGEMILUT CHASADIMLESSONS OF A BROKEN LEG By Joyce Feldman, Temple President

strangers especially touched me, reassuring me that people are truly kind. With our current world in a bit of turmoil, and some dissatisfied with our current world leaders, this concept of gemilut chasadim becomes even more important. An expression I use a lot is “we are all in this together,” and this goes right along with this concept. Not only is this a Jewish concept, but this idea to make the world a better place is a value many other religions (and even the non-religious) embrace. A simple Google search of “random acts of kindness” will lead you to a wealth of sites to provide you with ideas.

My idea is that each month in this column, while I am your board president, I will challenge you to follow my lead by fulfilling one act of gemilut chasadim during the month. They will all be simple and easily obtainable. Just imagine ALL of us doing one simple act of kindness each month and the impact we could have on our world around us! You are welcome to include your children and other family members in this challenge!

For the month of August, in our days of leisure, my idea is to do something a bit old fashioned, but one that will be quite well received. This month, take a few moments to send someone in your life a handwritten note! It could be sent to an old friend you rarely see, an elderly relative, someone who is struggling with an illness, or a new friend. It could be a thank you note, a thinking of you note, or a post card sent during travel. The key is to actually write it and mail it (yes regular mail, not email). As you write your note, imagine the joy your recipient will get at receiving your note - this is your reward!

As I close I want to again thank you all for your support! Feel free to reach out to me if you have input, questions or concerns.

Happy August & Happy Writing!

FOUNDATION MESSAGE

IT WAS A VERY GOOD INVESTMENT YEARBy Don Fike, Foundation President

The Foundation Fiscal Year ending June 2017 enjoyed an investment return in excess of 10.7% (on just received not yet reviewed numbers). This is timely since the amount annually allocated to the Temple is based on a 3 year average of returns and a jumbo year 4 years ago is being replaced with this year’s good result. This has permitted the Foundation to keep the annual allocation in the $34,000 to $38,000 range over the last several years.

Total Assets for the Foundation are just under $2.0 million dollars consisting of $1,550,000 in cash and investments, $380,000 in cash value of life insurance policies, and a $50,000 Israel Bond. Just under a million dollars of Cash and Investments are Unrestricted and provide the direct support to the Temple mentioned above. The rest provides support to the Temple from accounts restricted to specific activities of the Temple such as Torah Center, Youth Activities and Speaker Programs. Total support to the Temple exceeded $69,000 for the year including $36,000 allocation to Temple operations, $26,000 to the Torah Center from the Davis, Lapid-Shapiro and Weil Funds, and $7,000 for Lectures and youth activities from the Lapid-Shapiro and Speizer Funds.

A major objective of the Foundation is to ensure the Temple/Torah building remains beautiful and functional far into the future. The Temple Israel Improvement Fund (TIP Hiddur Mitzvah fund) was established for that purpose. Initial funding is from modest funds available from the Capital Improvement Fund after paying all of the costs of improvements. To ensure a full understanding of need into the future, a Reserve Analysis Study was commissioned from Reserve Associates who provides such studies for Jewish Temples and other religious institutions along with a broad variety of commercial clients. We have received that study, and the numbers to meet needs over a 30 year time frame are significant. This analysis is very detailed including major and minor repairs. Our Temple has a very proactive maintenance and repair program which covers the cost of many items in the operating budget. The Foundation and Eric Shatzkin will analyze these items to determine the remaining capital needs of the TIP fund.

The Foundation has been working with the Temple Fund Raising committee to establish Rabbi, Educator and Cantor Support Funds. Having achieved 93 years of supporting Jewish life we are hoping seven fat years will propel us into the Next 100 Years with funds that support us through both fat and lean years.

How to Give hint – If you have a required distribution from your IRA you need to make and don’t need the funds, we do and can invest them to benefit the Temple. May next fiscal year be a good one for all of us.

RPC MESSAGE / FOCUS ON NEW MEMBERS

On the Jewish calendar, before the month of Elul comes the month of Av. This year, the 15th Day of Av occurs on August 7, and is the holiday of Tu B’Av, both an ancient and modern holiday. Originally a post-biblical day of joy, it served as a matchmaking day for unmarried women in the Second Temple period (before the fall of Jerusalem in 70 C.E.). On these days the daughters of Israel/Jerusalem went out dressed in white and danced in

the vineyards, while the men were asked: "Young man, consider whom you choose (to be your wife)?" (Ta’anit, Chapter 4). Tu B’Av was almost unnoticed in the Jewish calendar for many centuries but it has been revived in recent decades, especially in the modern state of Israel. Now, it has gradually become a Hebrew-Jewish Day of Love, almost like Valentine’s Day in English-speaking countries.

Elul (August 23 – September 20) is the 12th month of the Jewish year. Below is a short list of the basic customs and practices associated with the month and the coming and preparation for the High Holy Days:

y Traditionally, each day of the month of Elul (except for Shabbat and the last day of Elul), we sound the shofar (ram’s horn) as a call to repentance.

y Good Year Greetings: From the beginning of Elul and throughout the High Holy Days season, we include the blessing "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year" (Lashanah tovah tikateiv veteichateim) in letters and greetings to one another.

y It is customary to read Psalm 27 each day from the beginning of Elul through the last day of Sukkot.

y Elul is also a time of year during which Jews traditionally visit the graves of loved ones. This custom not only reminds us of the individuals who may have been the guiding light of our young lives but also helps us honor their memories, and also prompts us to think about the legacies we aim to leave for others – we give and receive love – which take on added meaning as we enter the High Holy Days season.

y Elul is a time that the more observant in our community may have one’s tefillin and mezuzot checked by an accredited scribe, to ensure that they are in good condition and fit for use.

y During the last week of Elul, in the days leading up to Rosh HaShanah, the Selichot prayers (penitential prayers) are recited. Temple Israel will be observing Selichot

THE MONTH OF AUGUST IS THE MONTH OF LOVE & FORGIVENESSBy Jennette Fackler, VP Ritual Practices

with a program and service on Saturday, September 16th beginning at 8 p.m.

y We go back to introspective mode and find the marks we have missed. Ask forgiveness from others whom we have offended and forgive others seeking for our forgiveness.

Several resources have become popular references to follow or subscribe for the month of Elul, such as:

y Rabbi Phyllis Sommer’s online initiatives, #BlogElul and #ElulGram, (imabima.blogspot.com) provide numerous opportunities to blog and photograph your High Holiday thoughts, reflections, and preparations.

y www.jewelsofelul.com ( Jewels of Elul) are a once-a-day reflection written by an individual – some well-known, others not so widely known – and delivered to your inbox each day during the month.

y There is also a great resource for Reform Jewish practices and customs at http://reformjudaism.org/jewish-holidays.

I encourage you to do your own research and find the customs and practices that would work best for you and your family!

We, Jews of the modern days, are so fortunate because of the freedoms we enjoy. And this month of August, let’s all remind ourselves to love and forgive others as we do ourselves.

Temple Israel is delighted to welcome newlyweds, Julian and Jennifer Gardner, as congregants!

Jennifer and Julian each relocated to Southern California separately as single adults. They met three years ago in Long Beach and the rest is history! They were married on April 21, 2017.

Jennifer, a graduate of the Alpert JCC New Leaders Forum,

learned about Temple Israel when she met Rabbi Moskowitz at “Meet the Rabbis Night.” Jennifer works in graphics sales and Julian is a mechanical engineer for Zamboni. They both enjoy cooking, hiking, and playing with their cat Sassie. Jennifer also enjoys photography and yoga, while Julian enjoys anything outdoors and working on projects in the garage.

Please help us welcome Jennifer and Julian! They are looking forward to meeting other congregants, growing and celebrating the Jewish holidays together.

As I pass the torch (gavel) to Robin Lilien, I am able to reflect on the many accomplishments, memories, new friends, learning opportunities and experiences that truly enriched my life. Our Sisterhood has grown in membership, we continue to have exciting and informative programs, we have a beautiful gift shop, and the connections made will be lifelong. I couldn’t have done this without the amazing support of the board, the

general membership, and the Temple. I never had to ask twice for volunteers to help with planning, donations, and time. I am forever grateful.

It is my hope that Sisterhood will continue to grow and thrive into the future. I have been fortunate to serve as president for the past four years and am grateful to Robin for her willingness to continue this endeavor. I wish her all the joy that I was able to experience.

EXPERIENCE ISRAEL NEWSREALLY, IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU!by Bonnie Bachenheimer

I understand that many Jews in America and the Diaspora are disappointed in the Israeli government’s recent decisions regarding the Western Wall. While I understand the disillusionment and hurt feelings, to appreciate the situation we must look further

into the facts.

When the State of Israel was founded, David Ben Gurion made a “deal” with ultra-Orthodox rabbi-politicians. In exchange for their support of the new state, Ben Gurion promised (among other things):• Kashrut in all public institutions;• Shabbat as a day of rest;• Rabbinic control of marriage, divorce and conversion.

Most historians agree that Ben Gurion underestimated the domination of the orthodoxy. The ultra-orthodox influence did not wither away as Ben Gurion had expected, but to this day has retained control of the government.

As of 2011, the population of Israel is divided to 75.4% Jewish, with the remaining 24.6% belonging to Muslim, Christian, Druze, and “other” groups. While only 8% of Israel’s Jewish population defines themselves as “ultra-Orthodox,” this small faction controls the government and, thereby, ALL citizens of Israel.

That means:• No one can catch a bus, train or tram on Friday night or

Saturday, since ALL public transportation is shut down for Shabbat;

• No one can buy soy burgers during Pesach because any market that sells them could have their business license taken away for selling something that is not labeled “Kosher for Passover;”

• No Jew can get married unless the ceremony is conducted by an orthodox rabbi; neither can a divorce be granted without an orthodox “get.”

The last time I was in the Kotel Plaza I did not approach the Wall. I dislike having a random woman telling me that I need to cover my cap-sleeve shirt with a sweater when it’s 85 degrees outside. The women’s section is extremely crowded, with barely any space to put a note. It is not OK that mothers must stand on plastic chairs, peeking over the partition, to see their sons become bar mitzvah. At present, there is NO equality at the Wall. However, this is not related to religion, but has everything to do with politics and with the ultra-Orthodox being in control of the government.

EXPERIENCE ISRAELYes, it’s offensive! Yes, it’s insulting to Jews in the Diaspora and disrespectful to everyone, including those of us living in Israel. However, the status quo will not be modified by nasty letters, petitions, discontinuing donations or boycotts. The ONLY way to change it is by becoming a citizen of Israel and VOTING for MKs who support a non-Orthodox leadership.

TRULY, EXPERIENCE ISRAEL!by Mark Dressner

If you are planning to visit Israel on Temple Israel's next trip or if you are contemplating going on the trip (you must, it is meaningful almost beyond words) or you are just an arm chair traveler and interested in Israel - our Temple Israel library has the books for you!

The Rabbi has put together a wonderful reading list in preparation for the trip. For the full list see:

http://www.tilb.org/Israel_ReadingList_18.pdf

From the list though, several are in our Temple Israel library:

A History of Israel: From the Rise of Zionism to Our Time by Howard Sachar (827 SAC)O Jerusalem! by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre (837 COL)The Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism by Joseph Telushkin & Dennis Prager (200 PRA)Jewish Literacy: The Most Important Things to Know About the Jewish People, The Jewish Religion Its People and Its History by Joseph Telushkin (200 TEL)Exodus by Leon Uris (F URI)See Under: Love by David Grossman (F GRO)

Check one out. Buy one. Go to the public library. There is so much richness in these books. Most of all, consider going on the trip to Israel with this Rabbi and this tour guide for a trip that will have you returning a changed person.

JUNE 24 - JULY 6, 2018For thousands of years, the land of Israel has been for the Jewish people a dreamscape, a land of promise. CANTOR EMERITUS MESSAGE / WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

A NOTE FROM CANTOR EMERITUS By Marvin Finnley, Cantor Emeritus

Dear Friends,As I have just reached my 73rd year, I have noticed the increased attention that Mother Nature has paid to me, having had several surgeries over the past couple of years – all with favorable results. However, I know that getting older also has its benefits, such as senior discounts! What we usually do NOT expect from our “Mother” is her undue attention to our young children, whom we parents feel should be free

of serious health problems until they, in turn, grow old.

In some cases, such parental dreams can be shattered in shocking ways, as was ours when we learned this past February that our 25-year-old son, Zev, recently married, was diagnosed with Leukemia!

Zev grew up at our Temple and attended the Torah Center while I was Cantor. Many of you know him and have expressed concern about Zev’s health due to his inclusion on the Misheberach list. Therefore, I feel it’s time to provide an update with information that is very encouraging to us and might also be helpful to other parents who experience something similar in the future.

Following his admission to the hospital due to fatigue and a frighteningly low level of hemoglobin, Zev was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He was immediately hospitalized and, within a few days, he was transferred to the City of Hope.

As one who had been only slightly familiar with the City of Hope, I can tell you now, after several months of experience firsthand with our son, that the City of Hope is dedicated to restoring health, physically and emotionally, to patients and their families who may feel helpless in the face of this insidious disease!

Begun in 1913 by a small group of Jewish volunteers, the City of Hope has grown to over 100 acres and contains research and hospital facilities dedicated to helping people like our son. The COH is at the forefront on every level of treatment, and, we have learned, Leukemia is a specialty of theirs. Additionally, we have learned that the treatment for most forms of Leukemia has advanced by quantum leaps over the last 10-15 years as knowledge of the different genetic strains of Leukemia has expanded, enabling new targeted therapies for treatment to be tailored to each patient.

It has now been almost four months since Zev was diagnosed. He has responded well to his treatment and is in remission. There are many factors that point to a successful outcome: his youth, his fitness, and the stage of the disease when he began

treatment. We are very encouraged and hopeful that he will return to a life of stability and promise, in large part due to the men and women of the COH who have been involved in caring and treating him.

Our experience, stressful though it has been, has shown us that the City of Hope is an organization that deserves a tremendous amount of support from our community. None of us knows when we might have to call upon their care; but if the need should arise, it’s comforting to know that such an institution is available.

There is still a small chance that Zev may, at some point, need a bone marrow transplant, and since he has no siblings, a compatible donor will have to be found. The COH has an excellent track record in finding donors, but the odds of finding a donor increase when more people register for the transplant database. The procedure is simple and can be done at home with a simple swab. I encourage anyone who is under 60 (the cutoff ) to find out more at the American Society of Clinical Oncology site: http://www.cancer.net/blog/2017-01/donating-bone-marrow-easy-and-important-heres-whyInterestingly, there is also a Synagogue at the City of Hope. To find out more, see this article: http://jewishjournal.com/news/los_angeles/106730/

And finally, if you would like to make a monetary donation, the COH provides a personalized web site for people to honor or memorialize loved ones or friends by donating to the City of Hope. Zev’s website: https://ourhope.cityofhope.org/fundraise?fcid=929769

Hannah joins me in thanking all of you for your concern! With affection and hope for a healthy and happy year.

Hi, my name is Brandon Brown. I am very excited to become bar mitzvah at Temple Israel on Saturday, August 5th. I will be in 8th grade this fall at Stanford Middle School, where I participate in chorus, serve as a student leader for the incoming sixth graders, and volunteer as a buddy for kids with special needs. I also love to play baseball and soccer and hang out with my friends. For my Mitzvah Project, I worked with a special needs soccer team in the fall and a special needs baseball team in the spring. It was such a

wonderful experience for me, and I look forward to continuing my involvement there. I have been attending Torah Center at Temple Israel since I was in preschool and love being part of this amazing community. I want to thank my parents and siblings for helping me prepare for my bar mitzvah.

THIS MONTH'S B'NAI MITZVAHHi, my name is Roni Dvir and i am currently an 8th grader at Orange County School of the Arts. I love musical theatre, singing, biology, and baking. I have been singing for my entire life, but only recently I have found my love for theatre. I am the first daughter to have a Bat Mitzvah, and I am both very excited and nervous.

For my Bat Mitzvah Project I volunteer at the Alpert JCC in the Early Childhood Education program. I love playing with the kids and reading them books!

I would love to keep volunteering there for fun after my Bat Mitzvah! I joined temple in 3rd grade and throughout each year I grow more and more prideful to be Israeli.

I feel very honored to become a Bat Mitzvah and take this next step as a contributing member in my Jewish community.

Hi, my name is Isaac Sweeney and I will become a Bar Mitzvah on August 12th. I am going into 8th grade and just finished my fifth year of Hebrew School. I live with my mom, my dad, and my brother in Long Beach. I go to school at Marshall Academy of the Arts. Two of my favorite things to do do are play baseball and to sail.

For my Mitzvah Project I volunteered at the Challenger Division of Long Beach Little League helping mentally and physically challenged players. This

summer I am volunteering at the Seal Beach Yacht Club's Junior Program, helping young sailors. I also helped greet at Shabbat Services.

As I said, I like baseball, and one of my goals in life is to become a professional baseball player as well as to graduate college. I want to thank my family for their support with my studies and I want to thank my Torah Center teachers for their dedication and guidance throughout the years. I also want to thank Cantor Hass, Kelly Cooper Perler, and Rabbi Moskowitz for preparing me to become a Bar Mitzvah.

TEMPLE ISRAEL’S 9-12 GRADE YOUTH GROUP

By Owen Sweeney, ANDI President

After a hugely successful June Lock-In at Temple Israel, ANDI has gotten a fast start on summer planning in July and August. After several meetings, we already have many amazing events in the books for next year, including two lock-ins and a NFTY 678! Additionally, we have decided to take up a year-long social action theme (to be named later) in order to better serve our community and make sure that our events serve a meaningful purpose. ANDI is also in the midst of designing new merchandise for the upcoming year. Merchandise will be available for purchase starting late August. We are having a great time hanging out, planning, and working on our leadership skills at our meetings. If you would like to join us, our August meetings are being held on the 17th (at 5p.m.) and the 27th (at 9:30a.m.) at the Liu home. Thank you for your support.

For any questions or concerns please contact Kara Liu, Youth Director at [email protected]

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY -READ A JEWISH BOOK THIS SUMMER!by Joan Leb We hope everyone is having a happy summer. Soon we will be celebrating the High Holy Days, Torah Center will begin, and we will all be back in the routine. At the library, we are in the middle of “shelf-reading”, basically an inventory to make sure that the books in our computer catalog are actually on the shelf. If we can’t locate a book, either on the shelf or checked out, we consider it lost. Next month, we’ll provide a list of the lost books.

So far, we have a list of the DVDs that are missing from the collection:Black Over WhiteThe ChosenFiddler on the RoofThe Fire Within: Jews in the Amazon RainforestMaking Trouble: Three Generations of funny Jewish WomenPraying with Lior

If you have any of these DVDs, please return them to the library, no questions asked. It’s disheartening to have to replace lost items, instead of buying new titles.

For our new members and as a refresher for other members, here is the library’s Circulation Policy:1. Temple Israel members, clergy, staff, and students in the

Torah Center may borrow books from the Franklin Library. Others may enjoy the use of the facility but may not borrow books or other media. Reference materials are for library use only.

2. Adults and Torah Center students may have three (3) items on loan at one time.

3. Materials may be borrowed for three (3) weeks. An item may be renewed twice unless there is a “hold” on it for another patron.

4. Fines will not be levied for overdue items. However, borrowers are responsible for damaged or missing items. If an item is lost or damaged beyond repair, the patron is asked to purchase a replacement copy or pay an $18.00 fee or the value of the book, whichever is greater, to the Library. An item will be considered lost if it has not been returned at the end of a 3-month period.

Please note that books may be checked out for three weeks and DVDs for one week. Items may be renewed twice, a total of nine weeks for books and three weeks for DVDs. Items not returned after three months from the original borrowing date are considered lost and will be charged an $18.00 replacement fee or the price of the item, whichever is greater.Thank you for your cooperation.

Looking out at everyone present tonight, I recognize so many of you, although I cannot remember most of your names. When I found out I was being honored at this year’s gala, I was truly surprised.

First off, I would like to congratulate my co-honorees Mark and Cathe Hagerman-Beizer for sharing this honor with me.

I am fortunate to have so many good friends here at Temple Israel, too many to name individually, but I want to thank them for their continuing kindness and generosity. I want to thank Liz Sharzer and, my son Richard, for helping me to prepare these remarks. I also want to thank the Temple staff, our president Steve Keiles, the Board of Directors, Cantor Hass, and Rabbi Moskowitz.

I have known 14 rabbis since my husband Bob and I joined the Temple over 70 years ago. Rabbi Moskowitz is by far the best!

I grew up at Temple Emmanuel in Milwaukee, a Classical Reform Congregation, where, in 1937, the Union Prayer Book still referred to the Rabbi as “Mister.” There were no Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Temple Emmanuel, although I took Hebrew classes there, and was confirmed there. When Bob and I moved to Long Beach, the first thing we did was to join Temple Israel. It’s hard to believe that I have been coming to this building since 1947 – in that same period I have moved to five different homes. Temple Israel is home for me. It is the place where I’ve made lifelong friends. It is the place where I come to pray. One of the best things is that I can now watch Shabbat Services online, when I can’t get to the Temple – I’m there with you at Temple whether you know it or not!

And one of my favorite activities is Torah Study with Rabbi Moskowitz. Every week I get a new perspective of the Torah. Rabbi leads an interesting discussion, and I always enjoy learning with him and my Torah Study buddies.

They say that I’m the woman with the longest membership at Temple Israel. It makes me so happy to be part of this community. Temple Israel has been the right place for me. As I think of the many congregants we have lost recently, it seems to me that God has taken note of our losses and has blessed many of our Temple families with new babies. May they all grow up to be a blessing to their families and their new home here at Temple Israel.

Thank you again for honoring this old lady!
