Hillel has been awarded a national grant by the Covenant Foundation to create South Florida’s Paradigm Project for Early Childhood Jewish Education Leadership. Hillel is one of only three schools in the country selected to participate in the 2012 project. The

other markets are Greater Los Angeles and Boston.The Paradigm Project is designed to give educators skills and experience to

enrich the school environment and ultimately expand and multiply the pool of promising young leaders within Jewish early childhood education.

Valerie Lustgarten, Hillel’s Director of Lower School, ECE-Grade 2, said faculty and directors from area schools will meet throughout the year to train and become mentors for fellow educators to develop the fi nest Jewish early childhood leaders. Lustgarten is a Fellow of the Covenant Foundation.

The program has 22 faculty members, including 10 from Hillel. The fi rst training session was held May 24 at Hillel, which has been serving as a demonstration school for the past two years. “Educators will have the tools to become better teachers and directors as mentors and leaders within their schools,” Lustgarten said. The goal is to educate and energize a new generation with a vibrant vision of early childhood education, framed by and embedded in Judaism.

Hillel Awarded National Ignition Grant

Updated Name Preserves Legacies, Uni� es Brand Hillel’s updated name of Scheck Hillel Community School was

unveiled at the school’s Annual Meeting on May 25, 2012. As clear as the community is about school pride, all have been uncertain at times about the name. From prospective parents looking the school up in directories to Upper School students registering for the SATs or applying to college, all have asked: Is it Hillel? Is it Samuel Scheck? Is it Ben Lipson? Is it Juda and Maria Diener? One thing’s always been for sure: “We know we love this place! But what is it called?”

Some have thought the school to have many different names or one very long name. That’s why it needed ONE name to refl ect ONE shared vision to serve as the fi nest Jewish international school.

More than 40 years ago, the school was blessed to have been started in memory of a man committed to lifelong learning. As you see in the timeline below, the school has a beautiful story of how it has preserved not only his name – Samuel Scheck – but also the other great community leaders whose memories are for a blessing and for whom the school has named divisions.

Hillel Community remains at the center of the Scheck Hillel Community School name. It’s the core of the school’s identity enhanced by names of those committed to Jewish education. These school and division names preserve legacies with practicality consistent with branding and identity, all while upholding deep tradition important to all.

These names are the results of a thorough process involving input from students, parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff and Board about the school’s name and identity. Thank you to those who participated and made all of this possible – specifi cally to the Lipson, Diener and Scheck families.

Division names will continue on division-specifi c items, but you’ll see the single name roll out from uniform shirts to website to other fun ways to increase school pride. Alumnus Earns Spot on Basketball TeamMazel tov to Jacky Beda (‘10) who earned a spot on Yeshiva University’s varsity basketball team. Hard work and perseverance paid off for this alumnus who began his college career at Northeastern University in Boston. While visiting the Hillel team when they played at Yeshiva University earlier this year, Jacky decided to tryout. Though the team was full, Jacky believed he could make a difference. He transfered schools

and practiced harder than ever before to fi nally earn a spot on the Yeshiva University Maccabbees varsity team. Mazel tov!

At the 2012 Annual Meeting, next year’s Board of Governors was installed, while outgoing Board members were thanked for service. Jorge Woldenberg was recognized as outgoing Chair. New Board members began their terms July 1.

After an extensive application process, 10 students were named 2012-2013 Jaime and Raquel Gilinski Hillel Ambassadors. They will receive merit-based grants toward Hillel tuition for the 2012-2013 school year. Formal community recognition events will be held in the fall.

This program was established in 2009 to recognize students in Grades 6-12 who demonstrate their commitment to learning in extraordinary ways. It was developed generously by the Jaime and Raquel Gilinski family to further support education at Hillel and to recognize student leaders. Hillel’s Grade 9 students traveled through Israel May 29 - June 14 on the 2012 Israel trip, a 12-year Hillel tradition to learn, discover and bond with their classmates. Each day the experience came to life in Hillel’s blog, where family and friends traveled in real time with students. Check out ehillel.org/israel.

The International Baccalaureate spectrum begins with the Primary Years Programme (PYP) in Kindergarten-Grade 5, progresses to the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Grades 6-10 and then advances to the Diploma Programme (DP) in Grades 11-12. The strongest and most profound commonality amongst all three programs is the Learner Profi le.

IB’s Learner Profi le comprises a medley of qualities that students cultivate through the course of the programme. IB students strive to be inquisitive, thoughtful, knowledgeable, communicative, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-taking, balanced, and refl ective. Students approach their studies with these qualities in mind, and apply them in subject areas where they feel confi dent and less than confi dent. Practicing these traits in a school environment builds stronger, more complete individuals prepared for success in the 21st century. Add in Hillel’s unique Judaic curriculum, and the results are individuals with solid Jewish identities, ready to make a positive contribution to their community and global society.

The Learner Profi le’s greatest gift to schools that are fortunate enough and work hard enough to earn authorization lies in how its qualities apply to teachers. When IB educators demonstrate knowledge in a caring manner, communicate, inquire and refl ect in a principled way, and balance traditional lessons with risk-taking innovation that open young people’s minds, then learning goes beyond the classroom.
