KOG Connection—February 2017 Pastor Kinndlee’s Corner… Dear King of Glory friends and family, I hope the New Year has been going well for you and yours! It has been a busy month in the office as we closed out the 2016 fiscal year and prepared for our annual congregational meeting. Thank you to those of you who came to us with questions or needs and patiently accepted our response of “talk to me after the annual meeting” . Our biblical texts in the Sunday morning lectionary have also been busy since the turn of the New Year. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus began his ministry (to use a modern day movie franchise reference) fast and furiously: meeting the magi, being baptized, facing wilderness temptations, and then calling his first disciples. The last Sunday of January, however saw a bit of a pivot as Jesus finally sat down and began his first (of five) long teaching discourses found in Matthew’s Gospel. Last Sunday’s text beginning in Matthew 5 began a series of texts that will slow us down, ask us to take a breath, and bring us almost through the end of this month. This section of texts is called Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount.” This famous speech of our Lord, which according to Matthew, was delivered from a mount (though Luke says it was given on a plain), hence we refer to it as the Sermon on the Mount, and it all begins with Jesus’ “Beattitudes” or the blessing statements of Jesus. Below is the four-Sunday series we’ll be following as we study more closely Jesus’ first sermon/teaching for his followers focusing on what it means to be his disciples: Sun., Jan. 29: Discipleship…the Be-Attitude of Being Christ Sun., Feb. 5: Discipleship is…Being Both Just and Right (but not in the ways we think) Sun., Feb. 12: Discipleship is…Being in Relationship Sun., Feb. 19: Discipleship is…Being Perfect Love Then at the end of this month we will begin our new Sermon Series “Foundations” which will be our focus throughout Lent as well as the focus of our new 6-week small group ministry we’re calling “Growth Groups”. I strongly encourage all of you to sign-up for this short-term Lenten opportunity to study God’s word and form new and deeper relationships with congregation members you may not yet know. You can sign-up now on Sunday morning with Paul or Karen Wallace. Sign-ups will end at the middle of this month, however, so we can form the new groups and make sure we have enough leaders for each. Here is our Foundations Sermon Series schedule: 2/26 The Story; 3/5 The Word; 3/12 The Gathering; 3/19 The Water; 3/26 The Meal; 4/2 The Mission. On a final note, I wanted to let you know that plans are now being put into place in preparation for my parental leave. Assuming, all continues to go well with the pregnancy, I anticipate beginning my 10-week parental leave either in the last week of March or the first week of April. The Council has voted to ask Rev. Carl Zimmerman (who retired from Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Huntington Beach in 2016) to do King of Glory’s pastoral coverage during my time away. (And he accepted! ) Pastor Carl will be in charge of planning and leading worship during that time and tending to any pastoral care needs that arise, including visiting our sick and homebound members. Pastor Carl will not be having office hours, so please direct any questions or concerns regarding church business and ongoing ministries to staff members and Council. If you have any questions about this arrangement, feel free to ask myself or Council. And I think I speak for all in saying ahead of time that we appreciate your patience and flexibility as we become one of the first churches in our Synod to navigate a head pastor’s maternity leave. As our baby boomer generation of pastors moves into retirement and new pastors are called to the area (the majority of whom in seminaries are now women), my hope is that this

W-ELCA Events… (Information regarding Women’s Ministry for February)

Souper Bowl Sunday is February 5: W-ELCA is once again sponsoring "Souper Bowl" on February 5. While we enjoy our snacks during the games, as Christians we remember those who lack even a bowl of soup. We ask each member to give a dollar for the hungry. Proceeds will be sent to Lutheran Social Services in Garden Grove. A dollar by itself is fairly insignificant, but a dollar from each of us will buy a lot of soup. Look for a W-ELCA member before for after service on February 5 and don’t forget your dollar. Thank you.

W-ELCA Board Meeting: Next Board Meeting is Monday, February 13, at 7:00 p.m. in Little Ed. All women are welcome.

“Food For Thought” from the Prayer Warriors: "Lord, teach us to pray." – Luke 11:1

"After Jesus said this, He looked toward heaven and prayed." – John 17:1

“Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests." – Eph. 6:18

What is prayer? Maybe first we should decide who is God? God has many attributes described in the Bible. He is all-knowing, all-powerful, in total control…. He is all-loving. I’m sure each of you have a definition of who God is that is different from everyone else, because God relates to each of us as individuals. And He loves each of us. Prayer is talking, relating, to this being who loves enough to send a part of Himself, His Son, to live among us, teach us how to live in this world and how to relate to the Father by prayer, and to die for us. Prayer is confession, praise, adoration, supplication, intercession and more. Jesus taught us to pray by giving us The Lord’s Prayer. Jesus prayed often, morning, noon, and night. Jesus prayed, or connected, with the Father constantly.

A few months ago, I suggested that you find time every night before bed to review your day and remember where you can see that God was with you at that moment and blessed you. Now, I have another suggestion: stop throughout the day and ask God to show you the way, to be with you in a difficult situation, to grant you peace for even just a moment. A long prayer? Not necessarily. Just a moment, a pause, to recognize that God is with you and surrounds you with His love always and forever.

Lord, You are so great and wonderful. You are with me moment by moment. With You by my side, I can live the life You have planned for me knowing that you love me unconditionally and I am never, never alone.

Bless my loved ones, Lord, and help us to walk the life of love that Jesus walked and taught to us. AMEN

What Is Stephen Ministry? Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ (Gal. 6:2, NRSV).

Stephen Ministry is the one-to-one lay caring ministry that takes place in congregations that use the Stephen Series system. Stephen Ministry congregations equip and empower lay caregivers—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting.

How Stephen Ministry Works The best way to understand how Stephen Ministry works is to learn about three groups of people involved in this ministry: Stephen Leaders, Stephen Ministers, and care receivers.

Stephen Leaders Stephen Leaders establish and direct Stephen Ministry in a congregation. They—

build awareness of Stephen Ministry within the congregation and community; recruit and train Stephen Ministers; meet with potential care receivers to assess their needs; match care receivers with Stephen Ministers; provide Stephen Ministers with ongoing supervision and continuing education.

People learn to serve as Stephen Leaders by attending a Leader’s Training Course—a one-week conference that introduces the resources used to lead Stephen Ministry, develops key skills, and gets people excited about this caring ministry. Most congregations begin with two to four Stephen Leaders, typically including a pastor, possibly another church staff person, and one or more lay leaders.

Stephen Ministers Stephen Ministers—Lay caregivers trained in the congregation by Stephen Leaders.

Stephen Ministers are congregation members trained by Stephen Leaders to offer high-quality, one-to-one Christian care to people going through tough times. A Stephen Minister usually provides care to one person at a time, meeting with that person once a week for about an hour. Twice a month, Stephen Ministers gather with their Stephen Leaders for supervision and continuing education.

Care Receivers Care Receivers—People going through tough times who are being cared for by Stephen Ministers.

Care receivers are people—congregation members and others in the community—who receive care from a Stephen Minister. These are people struggling through a difficult time in life—experiencing grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, or some other life crisis.

Some important guidelines for this caring relationship protect both the care receiver and the Stephen Minister:

The relationship between a care receiver and a Stephen Minister is confidential. Men are matched with men; women with women. When a care receiver’s needs exceed what a Stephen Minister can provide, the

Stephen Ministry team makes a referral to an appropriate mental health professional or other community resource.

We celebrate that KOG has accomplished sending and training Stephen Ministry Leaders, who have just spent the last few months training 3 Stephen Ministers. KOG is equipped with leaders and trainers who need care receivers. Please let Pastor Kinndlee, Lorrie Blain, and/or Deenna Eley know if you or someone you know needs the gift of a Stephen Minister. We are here for YOU!

NEW Small Group Ministry coming to KOG!: For Lent this year (February 26 – April 8), we'll be forming Growth Groups to meet on a weekly basis to talk, strengthen church relationships, explore Christian teachings, and pray for one another.
